Luke 8:27 (KJV) And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in [any] house, but in the tombs. Luke 8:28 (KJV) When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, [thou] Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not. Luke 8:29 (KJV) (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.) Luke 8:30 (KJV) And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him. Luke 8:31 (KJV) And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep. Luke 8:32 (KJV) And there was there an herd of many swine feeding on the mountain: and they besought him that he would suffer them to enter into them. And he suffered them. Luke 8:33 (KJV) Then went the devils out of the man, and entered into the swine: and the herd ran violently down a steep place into the lake, and were choked. 2 Let s continue in our book Desire of Ages, Chapter #35, pages In the early morning the Saviour and His companions came to shore, and the light of the rising sun touched sea and land as with the benediction of peace. But no sooner had they stepped upon the beach than their eyes were greeted by a sight more terrible than the fury of the tempest. From some hiding place among the tombs, two madmen rushed upon them as if to tear them in pieces. Hanging about these men were parts of chains which they had broken in escaping from confinement. Their flesh was torn and bleeding where they had cut themselves with sharp stones. Their eyes glared out from their long and matted hair, the very likeness of humanity seemed to have been blotted out by the demons that possessed them, and they looked more like wild beasts than like men. {DA 337.1} Question: What sight greeted their eyes that were more terrible than the fury of the tempest, when they stepped upon the beach? Answer: Two madmen rushed upon them as if to tear them in pieces. Hanging about these men were parts of chains which they had broken in escaping from confinement. The disciples and their companions fled in terror; but presently they noticed that Jesus was not with them, and they turned to look for Him. He was standing where they had left Him. He who had stilled the tempest, who had before met Satan and conquered him, did not flee before these demons. When the men, gnashing their teeth, and foaming at the mouth, approached Him, Jesus raised that hand which had beckoned the waves to rest, and the men could come no nearer. They stood raging but helpless before Him. {DA 337.2} Question: What were the reaction of the disciples and their companions? And, how did Jesus meet the matter? Answer: They all fled in terror; but presently they noticed that Jesus was not with them, and they turned to look for Him. He was standing where they had left Him. And, Jesus raised that hand which had beckoned the waves to rest, and the men could come no nearer. With authority He bade the unclean spirits come out of them. His words penetrated the darkened minds of the unfortunate men. They realized dimly that One was near who could save them from the tormenting demons. They fell at the Saviour's feet to worship Him; but when their lips were opened to entreat His mercy, the demons spoke through them, crying vehemently, "What have I to do with Thee, Jesus, Thou Son of God most high? I beseech Thee, torment me not." {DA 337.3} Question: How did Jesus bade the unclean spirit to leave? And, how did they respond to His penetrating words in their darkened minds of the unfortunate men? Answer: With authority He bade the unclean spirits come out of them. And, they fell at the Saviour's feet to worship Him; but when their lips were opened to entreat His mercy, the demons spoke through them, crying vehemently. 3 Song: Let s learn a beautiful scripture song together dear ones, from the book of Psalms! Psalms 50:14-15 (KJV) Offer unto God thanksgiving; and pay thy vows unto the most High: And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me. Psalms 50 verses 14 and 15 Jesus asked, "What is thy name?" And the answer was, "My name is Legion: for we are many." Using the afflicted men as mediums of communication, they besought Jesus not to send them out of the country. Upon a mountainside not far distant a great herd of swine was feeding. Into these the demons asked to be allowed to enter, and Jesus suffered them. Immediately a panic seized the herd. They rushed madly down the cliff, and, unable to check themselves upon the shore, plunged into the lake, and perished. {DA 338.1} Meanwhile a marvelous change had come over the demoniacs. Light had shone into their minds. Their eyes beamed with intelligence. The countenances, so long deformed into the image of Satan, became suddenly mild, the bloodstained hands were quiet, and with glad voices the men praised God for their deliverance. {DA 338.2} Question: What did the demons answered when Jesus asked, What is thy name? And, what kind of change came over the demoniacs? Answer: They answered was, My name is Legion: for we are many. And, a marvelous: Light had shone into their minds. Their eyes beamed with intelligence. The countenances became suddenly mild, the hands were quiet, and with glad voices praised God for deliverance. 4 From the cliff the keepers of the swine had seen all that had occurred, and they hurried away to publish the news to their employers and to all the people. In fear and amazement the whole population flocked to meet Jesus. The two demoniacs had been the terror of the country. No one had been safe to pass the place where they were; for they would rush upon every traveler with the fury of demons. Now these men were clothed and in their right mind, sitting at the feet of Jesus, listening to His words, and glorifying the name of Him who had made them whole. But the people who beheld this wonderful scene did not rejoice. The loss of the swine seemed to them of greater moment than the deliverance of these captives of Satan. {DA 338.3} Question: Why was the whole population so terrified of the demoniacs? What was the result of the two demoniacs that had been the terror of the country? Answer: No one had been safe to pass the place where they were; for they would rush upon every traveler with the fury of demons. And, now these men were clothed and in their right mind, sitting at the feet of Jesus, listening to His words, and glorifying the name of Him who had made them whole. Song: Let s learn our last scripture song dear one, from the book of Hebrews! Hebrews 7:25 (KJV) Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them. Hebrews 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost. It was in mercy to the owners of the swine that this loss had been permitted to come upon them. They were absorbed in earthly things, and cared not for the great interests of spiritual life. Jesus desired to break the spell of selfish indifference, that they might accept His grace. But regret and indignation for their temporal loss blinded their eyes to the Saviour's mercy. {DA 338.4} Question: What brought about this loss that had been permitted to come upon the swine owners? And, Why and what was the lesson Jesus wanted the owners of the swine to learn and break? Answer: They were absorbed in earthly things, and cared not for the great interests of spiritual life. 5 Gather the little ones together! It s Story Time! Our book selection this Sabbath is entitle, Sons and Daughters of God Chapter 3-Thoughtfulness Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering. Colossians 3:12. {SD 83.1} Look to Jesus as your guide and pattern... Study how you can be like Him, in thoughtfulness for others, in meekness and humility. Thus may you "grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ"; you may reflect His image, and be accepted of Him as His own, at His coming. {SD 83.2} When Jesus is comprehended by faith, and brought into the inner sanctuary of the soul, the Holy Spirit will mold and fashion the character after the likeness of Christ. Lessons will then be daily learned in the school of Christ. The character of the tree will be known by its fruits. "By their fruits ye shall know them." The Christian will shine as a light amid the moral darkness of the world. He will be tender of heart, and considerate of the feelings of others. The Word of God instructs us to be "wise as serpents, and harmless as doves," and it is the duty of every Christian to bring himself under discipline to the rules of the Bible, that he may be "a workman that needeth not to be ashamed." The work coming from the hands of those who do this, will be as lasting as eternity. It will not be mingled with a shred of selfishness, and it will not be loose, careless work. {SD 83.3} Tender affections should ever be cherished between husband and wife, parents and children, brothers and sisters. Every hasty word should be checked, and there should not be even the appearance of the lack of love one for another. It is the duty of everyone in the family to be pleasant, to speak kindly. {SD 83.4} Cultivate tenderness, affection, and love that have expression in little courtesies, in speech, in thoughtful attentions. {SD 83.5} It is the inward adorning, the graces of the Spirit, the kind word, the thoughtful consideration for others that God values. {SD 83.6} Next Week We will end with part 4 in our lesson entitle, Peace, Be Still of our book Desire of Ages Closing Prayer request one of the little ones or mommies or daddies to give prayer.
