6 334 dentfcaton OF THE manuscrpts for the past several ears personnel n the hstoran s offce have been searchng for orgnal handwrtten copes of the revelatons A number of documents and earl complatons have been located or procured and are now on fle n the church archves foremost among these s a bound volume whch was man ears ago gven the ttle krtland revelatons t contans 35 of the oho revelatons ths volume s approxmatel 24 nches long 734 nches wde and 34 3 nch thck the scrbe who recorded most of the entres n the volume was frederck G wllams orson hde added a few pages and joseph smth and olver cowder recorded the de dle others on page 2 appears the frst sgnature of the scrbe frederck G wllams sgned hs name to an artcle dated august hs sgnature appears agan on page 3 at the end of secton 84 and on several other pages on page 32 s an nterestng statement n connecton wth secton 86 gven b joseph the seer and wrtten b sdne the scrbe and councellor and transcrbed b frederck assstant scrbe and councellor the followng page contans secton 87 and the words gven b joseph the seer wrtten b FG wllams orson hde dentfed hmself as scrbe on page 7 at the end of secton 2 the manuscrpt volume krtland revelatons

7 OHIO revelatons when he wrote recorded b hde IS 8 aug 834 upon ths book smlar words were entered on page at the end of secton 3 three small books each approxmatel gt 646 nches long nches wde and 4 nch thck or less were presented to the hstoran s offce n recent ears the had been well preserved n a faml collecton for whch hstorans are most grateful the frst of these small books s labeled on the cover book of commandments laws and covenants because the three manuscrpts are somewhat smlar n format and are part of the same collecton and for purposes of eas reference the same ttle has been used for all three wth the ndvdual desgnatons beng books A B and C book A contans fve of the oho revelatons recorded b orson hde and joseph smth book B contans twelve of the oho revelatons one entr n ths book whch helps n determnng when the entres were made appears at the end of secton 86 and states coped at zon 2 june 833 book C contans three oho revelatons secton 3 s recorded frst and s n the handwrtng of orson pratt at the end of the revelaton entered wth a dfferent nk are the words coped b hde 8 augt auga 834 at the end of secton 4 are the words coped from the orgnal b pratt the last revelaton entered n ths book s secton 2 at the end of these mnutes of the councl of twent four hgh prests held 7 feb 834 appear the orgnal sgnatures of orson hde and olver cowder clerks followed b the words carefull examned 27 augt auga and recorded on the book of rev b hde the edge of the sheet contanng the 4 n 834 has broken awa but as ths entr s studed n connecton wth the recordng of the same secton n the book krtland revelatons t appears that 4 would be the number orgnall entered these two entres of the same secton were probabl entered wthn a short tme of each other varous other handwrtten manuscrpts have been located some are ndvdual sheets some are entres n earl journals and some are recorded wth other documents most of the rev- elatons are also recorded n the manuscrpt of the documen- and would have receved the at tar hstor of the church

8 tenton of joseph smth these copes n the DHC manuscrpt wll not be dscussed further n ths artcle the four manuscrpt volumes and the other manuscrpts have been carefull examned b dean C jessee of the hstoran s offce staff who has become famlar wth the ndvdual handwrtng of the earl scrbes manl due to hs efforts dentfcaton can now be made of the scrbes responsble for most of the wrtng once t had been determned whose hand had recorded the document research was then undertaken to dentf the perod of tme each ndvdual served as scrbe at the present tme t cannot be accuratel stated whch f an of these manuscrpts are the orgnals wrtten at the tme the revelatons were receved or whch are subsequent copes of the orgnals THE PROBLEM OF ERRORS IN RECORDING an nterestng subject to be consdered n connecton wth the revelatons s a stud of the dfferences that exst between these manuscrpts and the prnted revelatons n the doctrne and covenants such a stud s now beng carred out b robert J woodford for a doctoral dssertaton at brgham oung un- verst the results of hs research should be helpful to the serous scholar t ma be brefl mentoned here that a comparson of some of the manuscrpt copes of the revelatons wth the 833 book of commandments and the 835 doctrne and covenants ndcates n some nstances ver few changes n words and those changes whch do appear are neglgble n meanng or nter- pretaton beng manl grammatcal mprovements n other nstances there are nsertons of paragraphs or sentences have been omtted some dfferences appear n the headngs and dates of the manuscrpts when documents are coped b hand errors have a tendenc to occur manuscrpts ths s verfed upon examnaton of the exstng the manuscrpts appear generall to predate the 833 or 835 pantngs prntngs and the changes whch were made n these prnted edtons dd receve the personal attenton of the prophet joseph smth the one person who would have the rght to make correctons or addtons there are also some correctons made n the entres n krtland revelatons and these are n the handwrtng of joseph smth hs correctons appear n de dle tle tlle 833 and 835 prnted texts

9 OHIO revelatons 337 another aspect that deserves attenton s the accounts regardng the wa n whch revelatons were receved and recorded one statement comes from parle P pratt who was prvleged to be n attendance when some revelatons were receved and concernng whch he wrote n ma each sentence was uttered slowl and ver dstnctl and wth a pause between each suffcentl long for t to be recorded b an ordnar wrter n long hand ths was the manner n whch all hs wrtten revelatons were dctated and wrtten there was never an hestaton revewng or 566. readng back n order to keep the run ran of the subject nether dd an of these communcatons undergo revsons nterln enterln ngs or correctons As he dctated them so the stood so far as I have wtnessed and I was present to wtness the dctaton of several communcatons of several pages each autobograph of parle P pratt p ths statement however s modfed b B H roberts who states that some of the earl revelatons frst publshed n the book of commandments n 833 were revsed b the prophet hmself n the wa of correctng errors made b the scrbes and publshers and some addtonal clauses were nserted to throw ncreased lght upon the subjects treated n the revelatons and paragraphs added to make the prncples or nstructons appl to offcers not n the church at the tme some of the earler revelatons were gven DHC 73 an examnaton of the exstng manuscrpts verfes that there were dfferences or errors whch occurred n copng some examples of whch are gven n the followng paragraphs wth the manuscrpts of secton 42 s a photocop of a letter dated februar krtland the letter s addressed to bshop whtne and sgned b olver cowder n t olver asks bshop whtne to send b the bearer the orgnal cop of the revelaton gven to 2 elders feb 83 called the law of the church we are preparng the old star for reprntng and have no cop from whch to correct and kno of no other besde ours see p 324. secton 42 has the words 524 the headng of the manuscrpt of the laws of the church of chrst krtland geauga geaugh oho ma 23d 83 A commandment to the elders these lnes do not appear n the present prnted edton n 833 and 835 publcatons gve the date as februar 83 and the present dac has feb 9 83 the cop of ths revelaton n book B gves the date as februar 9 83 an

10 338 other dfference n ths manuscrpt s that a seres of questons s ncluded startng wth the queston shall the church come together nto one place or reman as the are n separate bodes ths s followed b verses I to then appear the words queston 2d ad the law regulatng the church n her present stuaton tll the tme of her gatherng answer followed b through 69 other questons follow the manuscrpt for secton 45 s headed A prophec to the church of chrst gven the 6th ath march 83 the 833 publcaton gves the date as march 83 the 835 the current dac d&c and the documentar hstor of the church all gve march 7 83 the manuscrpt for secton 52 s dated june 6 83 whereas the 833 and 835 publcatons gve june 83 d&c gves june 7 83 and the present dac the manuscrpt for secton 78 s dated march 832 krtland the 835 and the current dac at hram d&c have onl march 832 there are three manuscrpts of secton 87 one s dated jul and two have december 25th 832 as does the present dac d&c secton 87 was not publshed n the doctrne and covenants untl 876 the manuscrpt for secton 88 has the words the olve the 835 and the present dac d&c gve dec- leaf 6 of aprl ember both manuscrpt copes of secton 92 contan the name frederck and do not nclude the name shederlaomach the 835 edton gves the name shederlaomach but does not nclude frederck or frederck G wllams n the earl publcatons the anonmt of the ndvduals concerned was retaned through the use of these specal names there s et much research to be done on the manuscrpts of the revelatons and t s hoped that addtonal manuscrpts ma be brought to lght and made avalable to scholars contnued research and stud should contrbute to a greater understandng of these mportant documents and support ther clam to be dvnel nspred THE hstorcal SETTING OF THE OHIO revelatons there s also a great area for further research on the hstorcal settng of the oho revelatons what brought about the

11 OHIO revelatons 339 revelaton how mportant were the contents where was the prophet at the tme who recorded the revelaton orgnall As man of these questons wll be dscussed as can be the rest wll be left to be answered through addtonal research and wrtng the oung prophet joseph smth arrved n front of the glbert and whtne store n krtland oho on februar 83 he had onl a month earler celebrated hs twent ffth brthda persecuton ntolerance and msunderstandng had followed ths oung man n hs earler moves from palmra new ork to harmon pennslvana and thence to faette tance at krt- new ork where he was lvng when a letter was receved from john whtmer desrng hs mmedate assstance land to regulate the affars of the church there As he had done man tmes before and as he would contnue to do n the ears to come joseph nqured of the lord concernng hs wll d&c 37 to whch he receved n answer a revelaton dac com- because of the enem and for mandng hm to go to oho our sakes dac d&c he and hs wfe emma together wth sdne rgdon and edward partrdge prepared for the move to the west and n the cold wnter n the last week of januar 83 left the peter whtmer home n a slegh the two hundred snow covered mles were traversed wthn a few das and on februar the slegh drew up n front of the store where the travelers were welcomed b the newel K whtne faml joseph and emma smth were shortl located n two rooms of the whtne home whch was located on the corner across from the store the lved there for several weeks durng whch tme a number of revelatons were receved de four das after hs arrval n krtland joseph receved the frst of the 64 oho revelatons the sants n krtland had generall attempted to lve the teachngs of the new gospel but some strange notons had crept n among them and ths revelaton was receved to answer the stuaton the were commanded to assemble ourselves together to agree upon m word 42 fve das later februar 9 secton 42 concernng church government and how transgresson should be dealt wth was gven n the presence of twelve elders durng februar a woman came to joseph wth great pre tensons tentons to revealng commandments laws and other curous
