DESCRIPTION: This introductory course to First Nations Studies will assist young women in expanding their knowledge of spiritual principles, along with gaining a variety of practical tools for everyday use. They will experience exciting moments of connecting to their inner peace through meditation, mother earthing, attending annual ceremonies, yoga and much more. These young women will also experience a wide spectrum of hands on lessons that will include; cooking traditional foods, sewing traditional clothing, field trips to cultural events, inspirational guest speakers, critical thinking discussions, weekly self-reflection journaling, techniques on how to manage complex change, and finally, demonstrating a strong work ethic alongside their peers by participating in the PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) Thunderhawk Leadership Team. OBJECTIVES: A. Students will explore an inward journey finding a greater heart connection to self, others and all of creation. B. Students will demonstrate more clarity and less confusion of personal spirituality as they use daily practices of mindfulness, receptive meditation, conscious choice making, along with self-reflection journaling. C. Students will participate in Service Learning projects and/or guest speaker presentations during school and after school hours, on and off school grounds. D. Students will demonstrate an understanding of accepting invitations of reciting the Kanehelatuksla when asked. E. Students will participate in a second journal titled, Managing Complete Change. F. Students will apply knowledge of Oneida Core values to their daily lives.

2 Requirements: 1. Weekly Self-Reflection Journal Entries a. For each weekly journal entry you will be provided with a question or topic that you will reflect on and answer in your Self-Reflection journal. Each entry must be at least 2 paragraphs in length and your response must relate directly to the question/topic. One paragraph=a minimum of 5 sentences. b. Assessment: The Weekly Journal Entry will be approximately worth 10 points. Journal entries will be graded at the end of each quarter. 2. Classroom Assignments a. From time to time you will be asked to complete classroom assignments. b. Assessment: Each classroom assignment will be assessed using a rubric. 3. Ceremony Participation & Reflection a. ATTENDANCE: Harvest AND/OR Midwinter and Maple Ceremony: Attend the listed ceremonies and actively participate; active participation includes listening, dancing, preparing a dish and practicing the good mind. b. REFLECTION ONE: Type a three page response to how at least 1 of the Oneida Core Values and 1 of the Seven Spiritual Laws of connected to your ceremonial experience. c. REFLECTION TWO: Type a five page response to how at least 2 of the Oneida Core Values and 2 of the Seven Spiritual Laws of connected to your ceremonial experience. d. ASSESSMENT: The Ceremony Reflection rubric will explain how the written reflection paper will be assessed. The deadline for each reflection paper will be five school days after each ceremony. 4. ONHS PBIS Thunderhawk Youth Leadership Team Membership a. As an active member, you will be required to attend meetings, participate in discussions, and complete any assigned team member tasks. Some activities/tasks may be outside regular school hours and attendance is required. b. Assessment: Rubric membership requirements will be provided in a timely manner throughout the school year.

3 5. Oneida Language Knowledge and Public Speaking a. Knowledge of the Oneida language and being able to use it appropriately in a public or ceremonial setting is crucial. Requirement: Complete the following tasks in the Oneida language: -Introduce Self: name, nation, clan -Recite the Kanehelatuksla -Recite Personal Speech at the Maple Ceremony b. Assessment: A grading rubric will be provided for each assignment. 6. Guest Speakers Reflection a. Two Paragraph Reflection: Throughout the school year, we will have the pleasure of hosting guest speakers. Requirement: Write a two paragraph reflection that shows the connection to at least 1 of the Oneida Core Values and 1 of the Seven Spiritual Laws of. b. Assessment: A Guest Speaker Reflection rubric will explain how the reflection will be assessed. As a class, everyone will apply the Oneida Core Value #2 Kahletsyalusla/Spiritual Law of #2 Giving; create and give a Personal Gratitude/Thank you Card/Gesture for each Guest Speaker experience. 7. Field Trips/Service Learning Participation a. Field Trips/Service Learning Activities are part of the required coursework; when these activities occur, attendance is mandatory. After each field trip/service learning experience, you are required to write a two paragraph reflection that shows the connection to at least 1 of the Oneida Core Values and 1 of the Seven Spiritual Laws of. This will be part of your Self-Reflection journal entries and will be applied toward your quarterly grade. b. Assessment: A Field Trip/Service Learning Reflection will be completed in the Self-Reflection Journal and will be assessed by the end of the quarter. Students will also participate in the Oneida Core Value #2 Kahletsyalusla/Spiritual Law of #2 Giving, by creating and giving a Personal Gratitude/Thank you Card/Gesture for each Field Trip/Service Learning Experience. 8. Yoga & Meditation Experiences/Classes a. Participating in yoga experiences/classes is a requirement of this course. You will be required to complete a field trip permission slip prior to each

4 field trip. Classes will take place at the Oneida Behavior Health Program. Prior knowledge experience with Yoga is not required. b. To apply Oneida Core Value #1 Kanikuhliyo/Spiritual Law of #1 Pure Potentiality, you will be required to practice silent and guided meditation and yoga giving your best effort possible. c. Assessment: Attendance, Effort and Participation points will be used to assess this requirement through the use of either journal entries in either the Self-Reflection Journal or Managing Complex Change Journal. You will be asked to self assess your effort and participation. 9. Daily Point System a. There will be a total of 5 daily participation points. 5pts-A Above Average Prompted to class, homework completed, displayed the three R s (Ready/Responsible/Respectful) came prepared 4pts-B Average Homework not completed, and/or more classroom participation needed, came unprepared 3pts-C Semi Average Unexcused tardy, wasted class time, little effort/participation, cell phone not in designated spot 2pts-D 1pt-F Below Average Overall performance below average, poor choices, disrespectful, lack of use of the three R s Failing Present for class period. Did not display any classroom expectations above b. LATE WORK POLICY: Points will be deducted daily from projects and/or assignments handed in past assigned due date. 10. Final Exam: Multimedia Portfolio Presentation a. You will be required to create a multimedia portfolio. The portfolio will contain your gained knowledge of the Seven Oneida Core Values and the Seven Spiritual Laws of. You will demonstrate how you ve implemented these skills into your life along with a description of the different types of impacts you ve experienced. You will be required to present your portfolio in a prearranged community setting.

5 b. Assessment: A Multimedia Portfolio Presentation rubric will be used to assess this final project.
