To The People of Woodbrdge: Untl last Aprl ths company had been makng asphalt products n ths secton o New Jersey for more than 5 years. NermaUy we employed several hundred people, most of them from ths area. ; Because of the war, the company could no longer transport asphalt from the Island of Trndad n the West Indes, or brng n ts royalty al from Venezuela. We had to clow down. Ogr employees hat to look elsewhere for. work. But we were determned thatjths shut-down should be temporary- We asked ourselves: "Wnat can we do n the war program?" The Navy urgently needed shps and we had waterfront property wth docks on the Arthur Kll, whch marne engneers sad was readly convertble to shp constructon. We, therefore, entered nto a contract for war vessels of a specal type, at an estmated constructon cost e$5,,-. We formed the New Jersey Shpbuldng Corporaton, wth Captan John E. Otterson as Presdent, to nstall the shpbuldng facltes at Government cost and to buld the shps. Ths s the bggest operaton we have ever undertaken. We shall need a total of some, men and women workers, a number far greater than that employed by Barber at the peak *f ts operatons n the past. Other thousands wll be employed n factores supplyng materals. * ' To tku New Jersey area, ths means money for payrolls and «*y for supples - and a bg new war project. Ill 8-8 McCann, "gb' By Jack Sord, SPORTS ECHOES The Dodgers And The Cards The Dodgers and Cards, who have been battlng... lor nearly two years now wth Brooklyn usually comng out on top are comng to the crtcal pont of tha year's flag chase. For the Dodgers, the task s somewhat smpler than for the Redbrda. All the Platbush clan must do between now and the last of next month s to hold on to a consderable lead they have pled up. But the Cardnals must turn on oven more stetyn durng these comng "cookers" than they got up n July and they weren't exactly crawlng n July. Of course, they may have a break n the form of a Dodger slump, but that knd of strategy usually pays off n'second place dvdends, or lower, It's true that the August-September stretch haa caused many a talspn among the leaders, but Brooklyn doesn't mpress observers as the type of club to. go nto last-mnute nose-dves there's too much experence among the Bums for that. Youth carres the handcap n last-dtch pennant fghts. The younger boys mjy have a tendency to become jttery at the last moment. Angust Crtcal Month It wll probably happen n August that s, f t happens, that the Card* grab the League lead from the Dodgers, A slght slump for four or fve games on the part of the defendng Natonal League champons 'and a wnnng streak of a week's duraton on the part of the Cards wll turn the trck.. The chances are, aganst t, however] by very heavy odds, In the frst place, the lead s too great, Even f the Cards dd put on a tremendous spurt and catch the Dodgers, t would be ther turn to loae a few and the Champons' turn to snap- baek nto wndng form. In the second place, the Dodgers have shown no sgn of any weakness durng the season that was prolonged enough to lose a pennant., They seem to have a "Yankee consstency" for wnnng ball games, game, and many y a Dodger would be dsheartened f he faled to get back k n theje at t those the Yankees n ths year's World Seres. Then the Dodgers have a "notably consstent twrlng corps, wth French and Wyatt headng the lst. All these factors add up to another-pennant for Brooklyn unlens some udden surge sends St. Loua to the top and keeps them there. As to the chanees of each team n the World Seres, both would have comparatvely good chances. of wnnng. Brooklyn may have the edge because of a long wat for sweet revenge, but the Cardnals seem' to be abls to lck anybody when ther ptchng staff s clckng, The Seres should be better ths year than last because t wll be closer, no matter who fnally walks off wth the flag n the Natonal and provded, e Yankees manage to eke out n the JS5 5 Amercan, BOLT KILLS ft BOYS MULINOCKET, Me. 10 PAGE TEN " FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 9 INDEPENDENT How's Your Health? By The Medco Sunshne s almost us essental to our well-beng as food, ar, and water. The drect effect of the sun was frst recognzed n 7 ly a London doctor named Harrs. Harrs found that clam shells and other thngs "whch hal lan for l long tme n the sun" assumed curatve powers, The undent Chnese fed groundup dnosuur bones that had been bleached n the sun to ther sck chldren because t seemed to help make them well. Sun Form Vtamn D One of the most mportant physcal functon? of.sunlght, :s far as man s concerned, s to form vtamn I) below the surface of our skn. Vtamn D helps lead calcum and phosphorus nto the bloodstream. Both of these mnerals are needed to buld strong, hard bones and teeth, to tone up the nerves, and to prevent rckets and twtchng muscles. Recently medcal scence dscovered that the volet rays of the sun produce vtamn D not only n our skn but also n varous other substances n nature. It s assumed that, through the centures, fsh and even certan plants acqured the ablty to store vtamn D durng the sunny season aganst the tme when the sun shone less brghtly. Other Vtamn Source! In wnter very lttle sun reaches fsh punder water n northern clmes, Fsh n th«se regons are found to have large quanttes of vtamn D stored n ther lvers, Certan trees n Norway store t durng sunny tmes and have been used by natves for medcnal purposes, Vtamn D can also be added artfcally by rradaton, the process of exposng a substance to ultravolet rays. The sunshne vtamn s now packed n many of the newer, rradated foods avalable for home use. There are three ways, for nstance, of puttng vtamn D nto mlk: () keep the cow n the sun, () keep the cow n a dark stable bathed n the glow of an ultravolet lamp, and () rradate the mlk tself, Dpotou and Weather' Although we may depend upon rradated foods for supplementary supples of vtamn D, Ve should get most of t from the sun. There s a dstnct psychologcal value n sunlght that s not to be dscounted, ether. As a matter of fact, t sn't hard to understand the enthusasm of sun worshppers t's hard to be grouchy when ndulgng n a lesurely sun bath. Probably none of you who read ths have faled to notce the short tempers, lack of energy, and depressed feelngs among many wth whom you come n contact n dull, oppressve weather and how quckly tempers mprove and dspostons brghten when the weather clears and the sun appears. Even the stock exchange, they say, responds to the weather. Too Much Sun Not Good Sun bathng, however, s a habt that may easly be carred to excess. "The sun s' the most potent of Nature's remedes and, lke strong medcnes, should be taken only n moderaton. Lyng on beaches exposed to the drect ruys of the sun when the body s not covered wth a protectve coat of tan s lkely to cause dangerous burns. Besdes sunburn, there can be other ll effects from too much sun and summer heat. Exposure to excessve heat may result n sunstroke, heat exhaus ton, or heat cramps. Any one of these condtons s serous and should be avoded. Far-sknned, red-hared people should be par tcularly careful to take ther sun n small doses. Every summer people lose days from ther vacaton ard work by gettng an overr dose of the sunshne thfy wave. Ths summer partcularly, wth, every mnute and every penny needed to help brng vctory, days are too precous to lose because of a bad case of sunburn. Watch Expoture Although some people mght not agree, a very deep tan that s almost black s not partcularly to be desred. Actually, the tannng ndcates that your body s lng up colored pgment n the skn to protect t from gettng too much sunlght. My own experence has been that, other thngs beng equal, feel healthest when I absorb lots of sunshne and the fresh ar that goes wth t. I take n all I can n the normal course of each day.
