1 2 CORINTHIANS CHAPTER 2 1. LOVE DOES THE (2 COR 2:1-4). A) PAUL S 2 Corinthians 2:1 But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness. The last time Paul came to visit the Corinthian brethren, there was a heaviness of heart. It was not a joyful event because he rebuked them for the many things they were doing that was wrong. B) PAUL S 2 Corinthians 2:2-3 For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me? 3And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all. Paul s explanation is that it won t be a very joyous time if he has to get on them again for doing things wrong. He doesn t want to come to them again and have sorrow; he doesn t want to see them rooted with problems again. C) PAUL S 2 Corinthians 2:4 For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote unto you with many tears; not that ye should be grieved, but that ye might know the love which I have more abundantly unto you. In the epistle of the Book of First Corinthians, Paul wanted them to know the love that he had for them. 2. LOVE THE (2 COR 2:5-11). If some other brother or sister causes grief, I don t have to be affected by it. It is a choice I can make. I can choose to not be sorrowful and keep on loving others instead. Then, I might turn him around. A) PROCESS OF 2 Corinthians 2:5-6 But if any have caused grief, he hath not grieved me, but in part: that I may not overcharge you all. 6Sufficient to such a man is this punishment, which was inflicted of many. Apparently the Corinthian brethren did what Paul said needed to be done because Paul indicates the man s punishment was sufficient. If there is true repentance, then there should be forgiveness followed by forgetting. 1

2 B) PROCESS OF 2 Corinthians 2:7-8 So that contrariwise ye ought rather to forgive him, and comfort him, lest perhaps such a one should be swallowed up with overmuch sorrow. 8Wherefore I beseech you that ye would confirm your love toward him.. Restoration is allowed if the sinning brother comes back on the basis of REPEN- TANCE and CONFESSION. 1 A Christian who sins and seeks restoration is to repent of his sins 2 and confess them. 3 This is not to say that they need to get into a closet and confess to someone through a screen. Confession should be made as follows: Sins committed against should be confessed only to. Sins committed against should be confessed to. Sins committed against should be confessed to. 4 God's forgiveness is not a substitute for man's forgiveness. Sometimes we need both. Moreover, to restore a repentant brother, he not only needs the forgiveness of the congregation, he needs the congregation to show him comfort (vs. 7) and love (vs. 8). C) PROCESS OF 2 Corinthians 2:9 For to this end also did I write, that I might know the proof of you, whether ye be obedient in all things. If you have a congregation of people who want to do right, then you have a good starting point for instructing them about God. There is a good foundation to build upon. But if they already know everything and are un-teachable, they will gender strife and division. D) PROCESS OF 2 Corinthians 2:10-11 To whom ye forgive any thing, I forgive also: for if I forgave any thing, to whom I forgave it, for your sakes forgave I it in the person of Christ; 11Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices. Verse 10 indicates that when a Christian forgives, he is actually standing in Christ's place forgiving. The Roman Catholic Church believes this right is exclusively 1 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 2 Luke 17:3 Take heed to yourselves: If thy brother trespass against thee, rebuke him; and if he repent, forgive him. 3 James 5:16 Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. If the Devil cannot destroy you one way, he will keep trying other ways until he finds something that works. If you get angry at a brother or sister, you had better forgive them:. If you harbor bitterness against another Christian, you can cause them to be bitter as well. You can be that stumbling block that causes them to want to quit serving God.. Bitterness harbored will eventually be your stumbling block that will cause you to give up on the Lord. and will do more damage to your testimony than anything else. Nothing is more destructive for your walk with Christ than harboring bitterness against someone. If you find yourself doing so, you had better go to them and, if at all possible. If you can't make it right, which sometimes you can't, then it is best to. If it is something personal which they have done to you, pray that God will bless them. Nothing will kill a grudging, envious, bitter spirit better than a person and for them. 5 Matthew 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 6 Matthew 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. 7 John 20:19 Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. John 20:23 Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. 8 Luke 24:33 And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them, 9 2 Corinthians 5:20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ s stead, be ye reconciled to God. 3

4 3. LOVE IN (2 COR 1:12-17). If we stay in a right relationship with Christ instead of having our own pity party, then we can triumph over our problems. We will be a sweet savor to the saved and to the Lord. We will prove to the saved our love for Christ and this will be an encouragement to them. To the unsaved a sweet smelling good testimony for Christ will encourage them to get saved. BE SINCERE speak Christ and not self. A) CHRIST IS OUR 2 Corinthians 2:12-13 Furthermore, when I came to Troas to preach Christ s gospel, and a door was opened unto me of the Lord, 13I had no rest in my spirit, because I found not Titus my brother: but taking my leave of them, I went from thence into Macedonia. A door is an opportunity to preach the gospel. 10 The one who has the keys to the doors of opportunity for preaching the gospel 11 is He who holds the keys of hell and death as well. 12 B) CHRIST IS OUR 2 Corinthians 2:14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. Victories cannot be won in your own strength. You have to "be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might" (Eph. 6:10). C) CHRIST IS OUR 2 Corinthians 2:15-16 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: 16To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things? To the lost who are "dead in trespasses and sins" (Eph. 2:1), 13 those things done for Christ are the disgusting odor of death. To the world, YOU STINK! But when a Christian sees another Christian living for the Lord, he smells life. Christians that are living for the Lord know and understand and respect what you are doing. Every "Christian celebrity" is doing what he can to stay in good with the world system by not offending them in his SPEECH or ministry. You cannot serve Christ 10 Colossians 4:3 Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: Acts 14:27 And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles. 11 Revelation 3:7 And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth; 12 Revelation 1:18 I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death. 13 Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins. 4

5 correctly while craving the world's approval; you will either seek to please men or God. 14 D) CHRIST IS OUR 2 Corinthians 2:17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ. They are Bible corrupters. So the word "corrupt" has been removed from every modern English text by every Bible corrupter who knew the verse was aimed at HIM (or her)! Now, the corruption of God's words was already taking place in Paul's day. The earliest corruption was the addition of the Apocrypha to the Old Testament canon. That took place in Alexandria, Egypt. Moreover, Paul said it was "many," not just a few. So the "canon" of textual criticism that says the "oldest manuscripts are the better manuscripts," is not necessarily true at all. 14 Galatians 1:10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. 5
