Researcher Margaret Van Ness Nelson published a well documented article making the case that James' son Edward was actually the who devised his will in Southampton County, Virginia on July 15, 1761 (Proven March 11, 1762). These two Edward Barneses were different men. John Minsie of Chowan Co. to of Northampton Co. for 20 pounds current VA money 440 acres more or less on the north side of Indian creek and the west side of Chowan river, joining John Hooks, the Va. line, Robert Brasswell and Meadow branch, excepting 200 acres which John Mincie sold to Bryan MacClain, all houses, buildings, orchards etc, part of a patent for 640 acres granted to John Mincie I Apr Wit: James Maney, Robert Shannan or Sharman.[10] 06 Feb 1741/2 Bertie Co., NC. William Barnes of Edgecombe Co., planter, to James Many of the Province of N. John Hobbs of Northampton Co. to James Maney of Northampton Co. 20 pounds current money of Va. 30 acres more or less, joining John Daverson, a branch and a pocosin; part of a patent to John Daverson and together, all houses, buildings etc. Wit; John Porter, Sr., Edward Boyd X his mark, John Jornagan.[16] _12 May 1747 Northampton Co. of Edgecombe to Carr Durden of Nancemond Co., Va., 28 pounds 8 shillings Va. currency 440 acres more or less on the north side of Indian Creek swamp, joining John Hooks, the Va. line and Robert Braswell, part of a patent for 640 acres to John Minsie and excepting 200 acres on the sd. (co. not identified) planter to James Maney (co. not identified) 10 pounds current money of Va. 100 acres more or less, joining John Cone, Horse Pasture branch, as by patent to 2 Apr. 1741, all houses, buildings etc Wit: Thomas Uzzell, Joseph Barnes, Henry Gay.[18] _14 Jan1748/9 Northampton Co., NC. John Thorne (co. not identified) to Thomas Thorne (co. not identified) 15 pounds current money of Va. 145 acres on the water of Chowan river and the south side of Indian Creek swamp, joining Godfrey, and the swamp, as by patent to John Hook, Jr. 7 Nov. all houses, buildings etc. Wit: James Maney, Robert Gilliam, Daniel William.[19] 16 Jun 1752 Edgecombe Co., NC. made an unsuccessful attempt to patent 300 acres north of Toisnot Swamp.[20] 1753 He appears to have settled near the White Oak Swamp in Edgecombe (now Wilson) County. (Wilson was formed in 1855.)_ 25 Oct 1753 Edgecombe Co., NC. patented 179 acres adjoining the land of John Thomas.[21]
