1 Advanced Placement United States History Summers Assignments for the Academic Year Welcome to AP U.S. History! This is a demanding but rewarding course, which will require that you do some preparation before school starts in August. Even though summer vacation is near, please read this information and share it with your parents immediately. It is imperative that you and your parents be informed of the course requirements and your responsibilities as an Advanced Placement U.S. History student. These assignments are due the first day of school. Any late assignment(s) will be docked 20 points per day per assignment, up to five days. Credit will not be given for assignments turned in after 5 days. Please be aware that all assignments for this course are individual assignments unless otherwise stated. Always assume that you are to work on your own, unless specifically told that an assignment is collaborative. Books Needed! You will need to check out The American Pageant textbook from Mr. Hall at LHS. And you will need to purchase from a bookseller, or check out from the local library, a copy of Michael Shaara s Pulitzer Prize winning novel The Killer Angels. Summer Assignments: Assignments #1- Read the novel The Killer Angels by Michael Shaara and complete the listed activities. As this summer marks the 150 th anniversary of the penultimate battle of The American Civil War at Gettysburg on July 1 st -3 rd 1863, it is appropriate to use what is considered to be THE work to introducing this battle to welcome you to APUSH. Through reading this work one realizes that history is much, much, much more than dead people, dates, and trivial facts. Rather it is a living, breathing, shared human experience that touches all sides, all people, in ways that are obvious and not so obvious. Please pay special attention to the assignment requirements and expectations! The written assignments for The Killer Angels should be submitted (unless otherwise noted) in a formal portfolio with traditional cover page. The expectations for the mechanics of writing and a sample rubric can be found in the Improving Your Writing Tool that will accompany the this assignment was sent with and may be found on my Edmodo page you are to join. 2 Here is the assignment: 1. Please answer each of the following short essay questions with a wellconstructed, word composition, written in the 3 rd person. Please use MLA typing format to submit. a. Compare and contrast the Union and Confederate Armies. Discuss the makeup of each army, which is more dedicated to their cause, and which do you find more appealing and why. To do this successfully, you must use evidence, examples, and quotes from the book to support your analysis. b. Do you feel the novel is pro-confederate or pro- Union? You must explain why you choose the position you take and defend it with evidence, examples, and quotes to support your stance. c. Analyze the actions of one of the officers prominently mentioned in the novel. Discuss decisions and actions that he made/ took that he should not have done. Discuss decisions/ actions not made or not taken that he should have considered or attempted. Explain and defend! 2. Construct a diary, journal entry, or letter describing one character s actions for each day of the battle. Or you can insert yourself into the battle. But no, you may not get killed on day one! To receive full credit please do the following: a. Consider their actions, decisions, feelings about the war, and thoughts about the battle. b. Each day should be one paragraph of 8-10 sentences. Please note the written piece needs to run from June 29 th July 4 th. c. And the writing should match and meet the writing style, tone, technology, and terminology of this time period. d. Be sure you are accurate with regard to the unit you served in, what your unit did, where they did it, and outcome. 4 Assignment #3 - Personal History History happens daily and we all have a personal history. Knowing a little about your personal history is important as we embark on a year of study together. A. Write a letter of introduction in which you include 2 paragraphs. In the first paragraph please give your name, some information about your family, and a brief statement about who you are. Include a sentence or two about why you chose to take APUSH and what you hope to get out of the class. In the second paragraph include a quote that appeals to you (along with who is responsible for the quote) and the reason(s) that quote is important to you. Word-processing requirements: Single-spaced, Times New Roman 12 point font, with one line between the two paragraphs. B. a digital picture of you working on your summer assignments in an interesting place (vacation, beach, lake, camping, work, at a restaurant, etc.). Please avoid pictures taken with camera phones (too small), but keep the file size small (less than 480x640 pixels) and make certain that it is a.jpg or.gif file. 5 Assignment #4 Map work: INSTRUCTIONS: Using the following map, fill in the locations below. Use colored pencils for all of the coloring, unless otherwise noted. Include a map key. This map will be used as a resource periodically throughout the year. *Note: two maps may be used to complete the assignment States: -Outline the states with a dark pen -label each state using CAPITAL LETTERS and your best handwriting or type them out and glue them in place on the map -color each state a different color from those bordering it Capitals: -label each state s capital and mark it with a star _ -use a dark pen when writing them in (you may type the capitals as well) Lakes: -the Great Lakes and the Great Salt Lake -label and color them blue Rivers: -Mississippi, Missouri, Colorado, Rio Grande, Ohio, Columbia -label and outline them in blue Other: -use a purple pen to indicate the borders of the original 13 colonies -use a green pen to indicate the area acquired from France in 1803 (the Louisiana Purchase) -use a pink pen to indicate the area acquired by the 1848 Mexican Cession -use a yellow pen to indicate the borders of the Oregon Country -use a brown pen to indicate the area acquired in the Gadsden Purchase -use an orange pen to indicate the borders of the independent republic of Texas -use a blue pen to indicate the Union states during the Civil War -use a red pen to indicate the Southern states during the Civil War **Outline the areas then lightly shade them in with the same colored color pencil**
