Semaphore March N, W Volume # 3 From the Helm The Annual Dinner Meeting was wonderful, good food and drink, great decorations, and dancing too! The Adcox s and their minions of helpers went over the top. Thank you all for a wonderful evening. The Building committee has met once a week since their inception, a lot of progress has been made in defining what we want to do, and just as importantly, what we aren t allowed to do. It has been painful sometimes, but progress is being made and I m confident in this team to come up with the best solution for our needs. I ve always been amazed at the operation of Seaford Yacht Club. It s even more amazing now that I m Commodore and get s and phone calls from various committee chairs and members asking if they can do something above and beyond their charter that they think will help the club. What a great bunch of members! The past few days the weather has warmed up enough that I ve started thinking about burning some socks. Now I don t want to be antisocial while burning my socks so I am going to wait until the SYC Burn Your Socks Party on March 24, 2018 to indulge myself. In the meantime, I guess I ll work on the boat.

March 2018 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 1 * Bridge * Bridge * Bridge * Monthly Dinner Meeting * Bridge Semaphore Deadline * Bridge Burn You Socks 6:00 pm HISTORY QUIZ This year we celebrate the 40th year of the Seaford Yacht Club's existence. We are planning a big party in August, but to pique your interest, we are running a Club History contest. Each month we will publish in the Semaphore a couple of questions about the history of the Club. At the next dinner meeting following the publication in the Semaphore, all the answer entries will be placed in a hat. You may respond by snail mail or bring your answers to the dinner meeting. Please write your name and your answers on a 4 X 4-inch piece of paper. We will then draw an entry from the hat. If both answers are correct, the person whose name is drawn will win a free Club meeting dinner. If both answers are not correct, we will draw another entry until we draw one with both answers correct. There will be only one free dinner awarded at each meeting. You may snail mail your answers to Rosie Mitchell, 128 Spoon Court, Yorktown, VA or to Barry Shrout, 232 Robanna Drive, Seaford, VA The answers to this month's questions are due at the March dinner meeting. And, this month's questions are: 1. Which Club member did the paneling in the Fireplace Room? 2. Who designed the SYC logo?

Seaford Yacht Club Annual Meeting; Our Beermeisters, Tom Feldhaus and Mark Hinman, were contacted after January 20th with the final head count from Barbara. Fran Butterfoss found a template for place cards that would go with this year's table settings. Special thanks to Barbara and Cecil Adcox, Rachel Abramusic, Dan and Mary Beth Oklesson, Audrey and Al Moore, Jeanette and Mike Webb, Barry and Nancy Shrout, Jim and Linda Blotter, Bob and Janet Beilhart, Mark and Nancy Hinman, Tom Feldhaus and Fran Butterfoss. No wonder the work was completed ahead of time. We had helpers who've done many, many dinners and parties! They needed no explanation. They just got down to work and work they did! We made the centerpieces. The twelve Pilsner vases, black and white pearls, calla lilies, translucent water beads and silver ribbon runners were on loan by the Adcox's (These can be used many times and are to be shared with members that might have a need arise in the future). The gold ribbons for the napkin rings were donated by Lillian Downs. The workers were Doris Smoker, Lillian Downs, Sharon Jones, Joan Edmonds, Jandy Strickland and Barbara Adcox. All the tables were set on Friday. It was the time everyone, especially Tom Butterfoss, was waiting for! It was time to implement the plan to blow up the two hundred and twenty balloons! Tom was the chief strategist for the color sequence the balloons were to be hung in. Tom, Barbara and Cecil Adcox came up with the plan to cut the lines, the length of the distances from corner to corner diagonally. They then suspended one line between two ladders. The line was marked every twelve inches with a marker. Tom used the air compressor to blow up the balloons and tied them off. Twelve-inch length strings were cut to tie balloons tightly, every twelve inches on the line, in the color pattern determined by Tom. The plan had taken off and was executed! The first completed line with balloons was then hung in the cathedral ceiling area, diagonally, from corner to corner! The second line was then suspended between the ladders and balloons were attached at each twelve-inch mark. It was very exciting, especially when a balloon popped and Tom was covered in the gold confetti and white pieces of balloon. Mike Webb took over from Tom blowing up balloons and it was time for all the helpers to show up. They were: Joan and Bill Edmonds, Bill Small (Alita had the flu), Greg and Julie Choney, Audrey and Al Moore, Jeanette Webb, Angee Berry, Penny and Pete Showalter, Donna Gilroy, Sarah and John Bryant, Ben and Cheryl Huggin, Lizz and Greg Epperson, Doris and Danny Smoker, Ginger and Jake Smith, and Winnie Feldhaus. They finished the entire room in forty-five minutes! It was 6:45 pm. They had arrived at 6:00 pm. The pizza, compliments of the Adcox's, was scheduled to arrive at 7:30 pm. The group entertained themselves with a few beverages and conversation until the pizza arrived! I think everyone enjoyed the balloonathon (S.Y.C.'s new word)! This turned out to be a pre-party before the big party with a great group of people!

The day of the Annual Dinner, Meeting, and Dance! All the work was completed early. The helpers that had one-hour shifts, to represent S.Y.C. while the caterers and DJ are at the club during the day, are as follows: Barbara and Cecil Adcox, Lillian Downs, Nancy and Barry Shrout, Nancy and Mark Hinman, Ginger and Jake Smith, Joan and Bill Edmonds Thank you for volunteering to work on Saturday: Art and Cindy Dister, Audrey and Al Moore, Jandy Strickland, Bob and Janet Beilhart, Sarah and John Bryant and Fran Butterfoss but because of the multitude of workers, the week before the party, the work was done ahead of schedule. Clean up Helpers were Doris and Dan Smoker, Audrey and Al Moore, Winnie and Tom Feldhaus, Ginger Smith, Sarah Bryant, Bill and Joan Edmonds, Jeanette and Mike Webb and Carol Brower A special thank you to Jeanette Webb for helping get everything back into the correct storage places! Not an easy task! Sincerely, Barbara Adcox, Entertainment Chair New Members Carol & Tom Sadick have lived in Hayes since Before that they resided in Marlbank Cove for 24 years. Prior to that they lived in Northern Virginia. They have two daughters, Lainy & Mandy, one grandchild and another on the way. Both are Va. Tech graduates. Carol was a teacher and Tom a civil/environmental engineer. They have been retired since Both enjoy the outdoors; in December they purchased a 26 ft. Glacier Bay power Catamaran and are looking forward to boating and enjoying the activities and friendships of the Seaford Yacht Club.

Ken & Donna Nitchie recently moved from Jericho, Vermont to Sawgrass Pointe in Hayes. We have 3 grown children and are semi-retired. We have been sailing for about 15 years on Lake Champlain out of the Mallets Bay Boat Club on Colchester VT. Our boats have included a Pearson 26, a Catalina 30 and now a Catalina 350 named Reverie. In addition, we have sailed in the Florida Keys, the BVI, and most recently a 22 day trip to bring Reverie from Vermont to her new home in Sawgrass Pointe. We first came to SYC in Feb as we explored possible places to keep our boat if we decided to move to VA. We are excited to join SYC and participate in club activities and explore the Chesapeake from the water.
