AGED MAN KILLS 2, TAKES OWN LIFE: Josiah Bartlett, suddenly insane, shoots wife and Albert Crouch, Young neighbors then turns gun upon himself, body found in woods: Josiah Bartlett, 65 years old, shot and killed his wife, about 56, and Albert Crouch, a young soldier of the world war, and then, in the woods about a mile from his home, sat down upon a pile of leaves and turned his gun upon himself. The full charge of a 12-guage shotgun entered his left side, causing instant death. There were no witnesses to the killing, which occurred at the Bartlett home about a mile from Forest Mill. It is supposed that the woman was the first to be killed, and Bartlett, thought to be insane, shot Crouch as he stood at this front door. His wife was found in her room upstairs, with a ragged hole in her side, and the fleshy part of her left arm shot away.

4 Bartlett, after killing the others, went to the house of Rev. J. C. Chavers, a short distance away, and left an iron box containing some papers. He then went to the home of Bascom Duncan, and told him that he had just shot Mrs. Bartlett and Crouch. I want you to see that my son gets my papers; left at the preacher s house, and you come and take care of my body, for I will kill myself, he told Duncan. Mr. Duncan remonstrated with him tried to dissuade him from his course. I have killed two already, Bartlett replied, and I am going to finish the job. He went into the woods, and a short time later Duncan heard the firing of his gun. The body of Bartlett was found lying on a bed of leaves, with the gun near his hand. He had placed the muzzle against his side, and pushed the trigger with a barrel stave. Alarmed, the neighbors went to the Bartlett home and found the body of Crouch, lying just outside the front porch. His horse was tied to a tree in the yard and in his hand he still clutched a paper, which held a petition to the road commissioners to have the location of a public road changed. The name of Bartlett, was the last one on the list. The wound indicated that the shot was fired at very close range. Upstairs, lying in a pool of blood was the body of Mrs. Bartlett. Near her was a broom, with which she may have been defending herself from her insane husband. Just beneath the shot would in her side was a gash, about one inch long, which appeared to have been made by a knife. The bed in the room in which the woman was found, was partly made up, and it is presumed that the woman was shot very early in the morning. On Bartlett s desk was found a letter, evidently written on the night before or the morning of the murder addressed to his son: In this letter he had told his son that he was glad that he had been able to buy a farm I am glad that you have reached the rainbow s end. He wrote that he wanted a new revolver, not a hammerless affair, as he did not understand them and not a second hand one, as he wanted one on which he could depend. The Bartletts have lived in this county for about 20 years, the family coming here originally from Buffalo Valley. Monroe Bartlett, a nephew of the dead man, lives near Hillsboro. According to the neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett lived together in peace except when her children were visiting them. On these occasions, Bartlett lived alone in a shack built from paper roofing some distance from the farm-house. Mrs. Bartlett and her children occupied the main house on these occasions. At the time of the tragedy her children were all away from home, the youngest son having left a few days ago for Cookeville. Two daughters, Mrs. A. G. Clouse and Miss Joyce Jared live in Covington, KY. There was another son, Homer Jared. Although there was no doubt as to the causes of the three deaths, those who found the bodies refused to move the remains of either Bartlett or his wife until officers came and a coroner's jury was impaneled. They had then been dead for hours. FUNERAL ARRANGEMENT: The body of Crouch was removed to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Elzie Crouch, about a mile from the scene of the tragedy, and will be buried Sunday. He was a member of the American army during the World War, and had the respect of a large circle of friends in the county. He was an industrious young farmer, ambitious and public spirited, a splendid citizen of the community. He is survived by his parents, one brother, Woodville and a sister, Miss Elise, all of whom were at home at the time of the tragedy. The body of Mr. Bartlett will be shipped to his home in Buffalo Valley for interment. Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Bartlett had not been completed this morning, pending the arrival of her children.

Dr. Denton died last night at his home in Buffalo Valley of a heart attack. He was an active member of Madison First Baptist Church for 33 years, where memorial contributions may be made. Tamer was running an old general store in Buffalo Valley when his daughter (Opal Rebecca Jones) was born in Later the family moved to Waverly, in Humphreys County, TN where he bought a farm. After divorcing in 1924, Tamer raised his daughter with the help of his mother and his sisters, Calidonia Dona Jones and Minnie Belle. He never remarried and after he sold his farm he worked at a flour mill for awhile and then later as a house painter. Tamer died at his home in Baxter, TN after suffering a stroke. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the 82nd Airborne, serving in the European Theatre of Operations as a paratrooper. Prior to the Normandy Invasion, his unit parachuted into France. He was a prisoner of war for over 11 months after being captured by the Germans in France, despite five attempts to escape. He neither bragged nor complained about his service. He later became very active in POW affairs and was a founding member of the EX-POW, Chapter 1, in Dearborn, Mich. After returning from the war, he married and worked hard to raise his family. He was a retired long haul truck driver with Commercial Carriers, which enabled him to travel throughout the country, delivering products to 48 states. He was also a member of Teamster's Local Union 299 in Detroit, Mich. He was awarded the American Theatre Ribbon, European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with a Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, Purple Heart and Distinguished Unit Badge. He was a member of American Legion Post 409 in Allen Park, Mich., and American Legion Post 46 in Cookeville. He was also a lifetime member of Lincoln Park Masonic Lodge #539 in Lincoln Park, Mich., and a member of Christ Community Church. Mr. Maddux will be remembered as a man with strong opinions who was a good husband, father, grandfather and friend. He will be missed by many, remembered fondly and thought of often. HISTORY OF THE BURTONS IN CONNECTION WITH PLEASANT GROVE METHODIST CHURCH by Mrs. Pearl Huddleston Ensor: pgs Robert Burton and wife, parents of Alexander Monroe Burton, emigrated from Bedford County, Virginia to Tennessee about ten years after his brothers, William and Charles Burton, emigrated from Bedford County, Virginia to White Plains, Tennessee. He was born August 19, 1795 in Bedford County, Virginia. He was married in 1818 to Sallie Wilson Penn. They located in Smith County, Tennessee. They were members of the historic old Knob Springs Baptist Church. Their graves are in a Baptist Church yard cemetery just across the line of Smith County, in Trousdale County, Tennessee. Only one of the children of Robert Burton and Salle Wilson Penn Burton located in Putnam County, their oldest child, Alexander Monroe Burton. In his young manhood he had a general store in Buffalo Valley, Tennessee, but after a few years, he purchased a farm about sixteen miles west of Cookeville on the Nashville Highway (it was then the Old Walton) Road where he erected a large two story residence and a store building, where thereafter lived, and engaged in the mercantile business and farming until his death.

19 Like the other merchant Burton brothers, Alexander Monroe Burton was a successful merchant, and a businessman and splendid gentleman who was held in high esteem by all who knew him. He was Postmaster of the old Pekin post office for about four years, keeping the post office in his store. His general store on the Old Walton Road (now Nashville) was located only about one mile east of the store of his first cousin and brother-in-law, Charles F. Burton s store. Alexander Monroe Burton first married his first cousin Cynthia Burton, a daughter of his Uncle William Burton, Jr. She died August 22, She left a daughter, Nancy Ann Burton, and a son, Robert Taylor Burton. A few hours later the officer regained consciousness and radioed in to Fort Brag, North Carolina for help. But when the help came they found Thomas Jr. had been dead some time. Thomas and Flossie were born members of Pleasant Grove Church and were regular attendants. Flossie s membership is still Pleasant Grove, but her health does not permit her attending regularly now. Marie, daughter of Thomas and Flossie Holladay, was Sunday School teacher of the intermediate class at Pleasant Grove for some time. They now live in Cookeville, Tennessee. Mary Ralph Maddux passed from this world to the next on July 5, 2016 at home surrounded by family. As a lifelong believer in God s love, grace and salvation through Christ, she is now in His presence. Mary Ralph was born in Cookeville, TN on February 26, 1931 to Ralph Robert Jared and Mary Lowe Jared. She was raised in the west end of Putnam County on the Mt. Richardson farm and educated in Smith County. During her high school days she was a cheerleader, basketball player and voted Most Popular Girl her senior year. She attended the University of Tennessee for two years where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, but graduated from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute with a B.S. in Physical Education. After college it was marriage to Sid and farm life in Dry Valley raising crops, cattle, horses and boys. The farming operation grew through the years and it was necessary to hire summer help. A steady stream of high school and college boys were available, once they sat down to one of Mary Ralph s gigantic home cooked meals, they were hooked. In her fifties she found the perfect profession, selling real estate. She loved people, houses and showing people houses. Many of her customers became friends and the First Realty employees became like family. Always young at heart and optimistic, she married Bud Maddux when she was almost 70. They were able to travel and enjoy life and each other for several happy years. She also gained a step daughter from the marriage. Mary Ralph had several interests and was an animal lover, especially horses and particularly Walking horses. She and Sid were co-owners of Eb s Black Glory that placed second in the Grand Championship Class in Shelbyville in 1984 and had a streak of at least 50 consecutive years in attendance at the Saturday night championship. She was also a member of the Upper Cumberland Walking Horse Association and a past board member. Mary Ralph also loved music as long as it was Willie Nelson, Mike Farris, Gospel or about anything you could dance to, particularly Bob Seger s Old Time Rock & Roll. Like everyone, Mary Ralph naturally acquired titles throughout life; Daughter, sister, niece, aunt, wife, mother, mother-in-law, adoring grandmother, step mother. 22 and favorite aunt were bestowed on her by many and earned through genuine love, care and concern. Through the loss of two husbands, a son and two battles with cancer, she showed how to persevere by walking in faith but with determination, grit and all the while young at heart. 26 BAXTER Mrs. Doris Dot Lea Gillen Shanks, 82, of Buffalo Valley, passed away on Saturday evening, Sept. 6, 2014, at Kindred Nursing and Rehabilitation in Carthage, Tenn. Mrs. Shanks was born Feb. 12, 1932, on a large dairy farm in the Cherry Creek Community, at the foot of the Cumberland Institute in White County, to the late G.C. and Edith Geer Gillen. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Charles Gillen and sister-in-law, Frances Sewell Gillen, brothers-in-law, Walter W. Shanks, Ralph Fike and sister-in-law Andelene Shanks. Doris was an active member of Baxter Church of Christ serving as an elder s wife. She was a retired Tennessee Master Teacher who received Career Ladder III Status, and taught school in the following communities: Buckner, Silver Point, Buffalo Valley and Baxter Elementary for 42 and one half years. For the past 10 years, after retirement, she continued to teach students as a volunteer and substitute teacher at Carthage Elementary. She had a deep respect for each student as an individual and championed their endeavors. Students who attended Baxter Elementary still talk about her competitive coaching and zest for winning with her Shanks Sharks Basketball teams. Mrs. Shanks is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert A. While at MTSU, he played on the 1976 and 1978 OVC championship baseball teams. Following graduation, he taught school in Metro Davidson County for two years. For the past 27 years he was facility manager for YRC Freight Company in Huntsville. SERVICES TUESDAY FOR FORMER SCHOOL CHIEF Former Putnam County School Superintendent Walter Warren Shanks died yesterday, apparently of a heart attack. He was 70. Family members said he was teaching the adult Sunday School class at Buffalo Valley Presbyterian Church when he became ill yesterday morning. His lesson theme was Live in love and holiness. Church member said. He became short of breath and left the classroom, and his wife set out to drive him to the hospital. Someone at the church called for an ambulance, and the Putnam Ambulance service met the Shanks car at the Burgess Falls road exit from Interstate 40 in Cookeville. Paramedics said Mr. Shanks had lost consciousness and that someone was administering CPR to him in a parking lot when they arrived. He was died on arrival at Cookeville General Hospital. Mr. Shanks, who had retired from his job with the State Department of Education five years ago, served as superintendent of Putnam County Schools from 1972 till Funeral services are set for Tuesday, March 11, 1997, at 3 p.m. at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Cookeville with Dr. Wesley Henry and Dr. Charles McCaskey officiating. 30 He was born October 17, Before being elected superintendent here in 1972, he had taught school, ten years at Capshaw Elementary and six at Cookeville Jr. High, where he had also served as assistant principal. He had served in the U.S. Navy and was graduated from Baxter Seminary and also held degrees from Tennessee Tech. He was active in many education organizations throughout his career and had just recently been elected president of the Retired teacher Association here. After serving three terms as superintendent, he worked for the State Department of Education, retiring from that five years ago. He had continued running his cattle farm at Silver Point since his retirement.
