By Ken Williamson, Editor Winston Churchill said, You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give. The work of our Society is conducted by many volunteers, unpaid officers, counselors, prior presidents, and many other members that volunteer their time so the Society of the War of 1812 in the State of Virginia can continue to have an impact on Virginia, and America, year after year. What is a volunteer? What is the value of volunteering? The Independent Sector published, in 2015, that the value of a volunteer s time was $23.56 per hour. Volunteering in our Society is about giving, it s about contributing, and it s about Finding and Preserving History for America. Volunteering means working shoulder to shoulder with other Society members making an impact that will last for generations to come. Our membership volunteers for a variety of reasons, and each reason brings some small recognition to the Society. Some volunteer because they want to keep busy, some to create a way to rest from their other activities, some do it for the friendship and comradery that comes from working with new friends, and some volunteer because it just makes them feel good about themselves. But, no matter what the reason, it s the volunteers that make our Virginia Society one of the best in the U.S.A. The officers of our Society are amazed at what our membership volunteers do and get accomplished with little or no help. And, no one ever takes the credit it s shared by all! The large and small jobs performed by our volunteer members support the many and varied activities that our Society is involved with. These actions help to bind our State and communities together. So, it s obvious, volunteering is all about helping, freely giving time, sharing credit and contributing to those around us. Volunteering is the ultimate exercise in democracy. You vote in elections once a year, but when you volunteer, you vote every day about the kind of community you want to live in. ~Author Unknown As a member of our Society we all read the Newsletter and can see what s posted on our website the great things that our Society accomplishes throughout the year. 2 President s Pen: DEFENDERS, I m pleased to say that since our last muster our planned activities, grave markings and highway marking dedications have all gone as planned. We ve continued to be active throughout Virginia and have participated in many great events. You may be aware that one of the elected positions we have in our Society is the role of Councilor. At the last muster we filled the open positions for councilors. Councilors are an official part of the Board of Direction and have voting privileges during official meetings. Elected Councilors are: Charles Belfield, Bill Collier, John Epperly, Ken Williamson, and James Green. Collectively, the volunteer efforts of these men provides a vast amount of assistance to the Officers and Society, and we are grateful for their service. One of the options we have with the General Society is to request a grant of funds to use towards special projects. Our Society requested, and was granted, a $1,000 grant, the maximum possible, that is being used for the Captain Vincent Shackleford plaque. Also, the Society donated to the Friends of Shockhoe Hill Cemetery (The Oldest City Owned Cemetery) to help replace the Dr. Daniel Norton monument that was damaged when a tree fell on the cemetery. The impact of involvement of our Society is far reaching through Virginia. Please remember to support the events and efforts of our Society. It helps a lot when members volunteer time and efforts in support of the Society. Those members make their membership more than just dues. I wish to thank every member who participated in events throughout this past year. You helped with what we do, Finding and Preserving History for America. During the upcoming 2018, I encourage more members to participate and become a volunteer by participating with your attendance in events and functions in your own area. Thank you! With our banners and brochures, recruitment should be much easier as we make our way through Virginia. Mike Lyman has published a new book that I recommend to all of you. It is titled Genealogical, Burial, and Service Data for Revolutionary War Patriots Buried in Virginia. Remember, many of the people in this book are the fathers or relatives to someone in the lineage of our 1812 membership. I hope to see many of you at the board of managers and the VASSAR meeting in February. (From the General Society Webpage) Purposes of the Society The objectives of the Society are the collection and preservation of rolls, records, books, and other documents relating to the War of 1812; the encouragement of research and the preservation of historical data, including memorials to patriots of that era in our national history; the caring for the graves of veterans of the War of 1812; the cherishing, maintenance and extension of the institutions of American freedom; and the fostering of true patriotism and love of country. In carrying out these objectives, the State Societies hold meetings for their members and guests at which programs relating to the War of 1812 and intelligent patriotism are presented. Over the years, the membership has been fortunate in attracting gentlemen of high caliber, intelligence, and gracious demeanor. The General Society and its affiliated State Societies are sensitive to the high ideals espoused by our Founding Fathers and they feel the duty that ever vigilant defense of our nation and its Constitution entails. 3

4 The Society of the War of 1812 in Virginia General Order July 2016 PURPOSE: To establish the Board of Direction 1 July June 17, 2017 BACKGROUND: At the Society s Annual Muster, held on 18 June 2016 in Richmond, Virginia, officers and councilors were elected for the period 1 July 2016 to 30 June The authority cited below specifies the last five state presidents or in the event one is unwilling or unable to serve, the current President shall appoint the next past president to serve in his stead, selecting consecutively from past-presidents until the five positions are filled will serve on the Board of Direction. 5 The Society of the War of 1812 in the Commonwealth of Virginia Annual Membership Meeting Saturday September 16, 2016, 3:00 PM Woodlands Hotel- Williamsburg, Virginia 1. 2 nd President Stuart Butler called the meeting to order promptly at 3:00pm members and prospective members were present. 3. Larry Aaron gave the invocation. 4. Mike Lyman led the Pledge of Allegiance. 5. The minutes of the prior meeting were approved with the reading dispensed. 6. Officer Reports: The Registrar Hugh Markham reported that we have 2 new members and 2 prospective members since the last Muster and working on others. The Treasurer s report was bypassed since the Treasurer was absent. Treasurer s report later reported total assets of the Society at $29, and total membership count at 149. Quartermaster James Thacker reported no new sales or purchases of Society merchandise. Historian reported that the historic preservation of the Brook Road intersection project in Richmond does not look very promising. Also reported that the project to preserve the Battle of Craney Island in Norfolk with some sort of marker is still pending since it will eventually be paved over. Legal Counsel Carter Furr reported preservation project has been presented and 1 of 4 choices will be selected. Reported that it would take years before some sort of decision would be made. It was also reported that the James Monroe birthplace is progressing towards the building of the birthplace. Color Guard Chairman Charles Belfield reported the Color Guard s activities participation at the Shockhoe Cemetery ceremony after last June s Muster. He also reported that they have attended seven churches vacation Bible schools in the Northern Neck with the James Monroe SAR color guard. It has been widely received and is a big success. May also possibly work with the Boy and Cub Scouts in that area. Also reported that the historical sign honoring Gen. John Hungerford is moving ahead and location has yet to be determined in Leedstown. He also reported that he will head up the project in building the boyhood home of James Monroe in Westmoreland County. He has met with Colonial Williamsburg on the design. Site and architectural plan will be completed very soon. Building inspectors and contractors are on board to build the birthplace. It is hoped that the building project will well be on its way by Spring of He suggested that the Society contribute to this project. There will be several outbuildings present at the birthplace and was suggested that the Society could sponsor one. This will be a substantial project for the state of Virginia and tourism. He gave a brief history, background and description of the birthplace and what it looked like. Info on the Birthplace can be found on the Monroe Foundation website. He estimated that an outbuilding may cost about $10,000 and that the Society may sponsor as recommended by Mike Lyman. Peter Broadbent gave his input into the project since he is VP of the Monroe Foundation and is heavily involved in this project. 7. Committees Mike Lyman s Report: He gave us an update of the Vincent Shackleford Historical sign which will ready very soon. He reported on what the sign will say and where it might possibly be located near North Farnham Church in Richmond County. Background and history of the Battle there was explained. He continues to chair the website s duties and has made six postings to the site. As the Burial Book editor, 5

6 he has is still working on the addendum to the book with asst. editor Billy Simmons and they now have 4981 burial listings including 554 newly found burials. Perhaps by the Feb 2017 BOD meeting, the addendum will be ready for approval. Mike also reported on three events that will occur on Saturday, Oct 1. The Society Color Guard will march in Montross at 10am for Montross Day. A ceremony of a sign unveiling at Norris Bridge in Lancaster County re. 69 Slaves that Escaped to Freedom will take place at 10 am. Another ceremony will be conducted at Shockhoe Hill Cemetery in Richmond at 1pm honoring two 1812 veterans. Society participation is encouraged to all these events. Stuart Butler gave us an update on the General Hungerford sign project and his research and writings on him. Ken Williamson requested that a notice be sent to all members and guests about the October 1 st events which will be done. He continues to do work on our Society Newsletter and encourages all to give reports of activities by the Society to him. He encouraged all members to send him your family histories regarding the War of 1812 for the Newsletter. Next Newsletter will be the first week of November. 8. Old Business: Thad Hartman asked about the status of Fisher House and our contribution. It was reported that the gift has yet to have been made. Dennis Fritts reported that we have lost 3 former members due to death. He also recommended that the new brochures be distributed locally for recruitment. With the loss of John Dickie, an opening will be coming up for a position with the General Society which he had served. Mike Lyman reported that a joint project is being planned with VASSAR for a ceremony with a plaque next year at Pohick Church in Alexandria. Mike also encouraged participation of new members on our various committees on the Society. He distributed to attendees CDs of the 1812 graves and also Revolutionary War graves. 9. New Business: The election of proposed 5 nominees as Counselors of the Society was voted on and approved. Deputy Counselors can be appointed by the President. Attendees of our BOD meetings should be considered as prospects. President Poland pointed out that the ROTC committee will be needed for 1812 presentations at colleges throughout the state. He also mentioned the need to get local newspapers to report on our various events. Mike Lyman said that Loudon County is ripe for grave markings of 1812 veterans and it was recommended by the BOD to pursue this. Norfolk also has many cemeteries for markings. Ken Williamson recommended that we get information from new members concerning their interest in committees of the Society and then get them involved. We also need to contact members in their local areas to participate in our events. A most recent Roster will be circulated to the members by the Secretary. 10. 8 Defenders, At the Society s Annual Membership meeting, discussion to support the Fisher House Foundation resulted in agreement. The Society will support two of the Fisher Houses - these are 1) Ft. Belvoir Fisher House and 2) the Richmond Fisher House. Fisher House Foundation is best known for a network of comfort homes where military and veterans families can stay at no cost while a loved one is receiving treatment. The houses are a temporary residence and is not a treatment facility, hospice or counseling center. Typically, the houses are 5,000 to 16,800 square foot homes with up to 21 suites, all with private bedrooms and baths. Families share a common kitchen, laundry facilities, a warm dining room and an inviting living room. HOW CAN WE CONTRIBUTE? Society members can elect to make a one-time tax deductible gift of $20 or more with their Annual Dues, or by sending a check to the Society Treasurer. When the total amount has been determined, each of the two Fisher Houses will be given an annual gift of $120, for a total yearly gift from the Society of $240. The total amount that is collected will be held and distributed to these two Fisher Houses at the rate of $240 per year until it is completely extinguished - no matter how long that takes. Here's what we can do: 1) Add your tax deductible gift for the Fisher House to your tax deductible Annual 2017 Dues Notice in the space on the 2017 Dues Notice form in the line marked GENERAL/OTHER, and return your dues + the onetime gift for Fisher House. The homes are normally located within walking distance of the treatment facility or have transportation available. There are 71 Fisher Houses located on 24 military installations and 29 VA medical centers. Many more houses are under construction or in design. 9 ALL MEMBERS ARE BEING ASKED TO HELP WITH A COMMITTEE Do you have One or Two hours to spare? You can do it from home, even in your spare time! Our Society is made up of members who work together to achieve the goals of the Society. 1812VA Standing Committees address on-going operational functions of the Society. Our 1812VA handbook states that the President shall appoint chairmen and members to the committees, with the exception of the Audit Committee, which requires prior approval by the Board of Direction. The Standing Committees are: Audit, Budget & Finance, Graves Location/Registration, Grave Marking, Membership, Newsletter, Records Depository, and Website. The Membership Committee shall recommend methods for recruiting new members, publicity related to Society activities, assisting with their Committee assignment and shall carry out those actions approved by the Board of Direction. Special Committees: The Board of Direction may establish Special Committees as needed. The President shall appoint the chairman and the members of such committees, with the exception of the Nominating Committee. The brochure is printed on high quality brochure paper in vivid colors. It can be used as a handout that easily describes the Society and informs others about why they should consider membership. 12 Society Joins With the Unveiling of a New Virginia Highway Marker 69 Slaves Escape to Freedom October 1, 2016 A new Virginia highway road sign involving the War of 1812 in Virginia was unveiled Oct 1, 2016 on U.S Route 3 in Lancaster County where it crosses the Rappahannock River from Middlesex County. The sign commemorates the flight of sixty nine slaves escaping to freedom to the British fleet from the Corotoman Plantation on April 2, Participating from the Society was 2d Vice President, Stuart L Butler, who was one of the guest speakers providing the details of the event, and Past President, Mike Lyman who unveiled the sign and presented the society s wreath. 13 Society Joins with Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery in Ceremony to Honor Two War of 1812 Veterans October 9, 2016 At the Shockoe Hill Cemetery in Richmond on October 9, 2016, four War of 1812 members represented the Society (Mike Lyman, Charles Belfield, James Thacker, and Bill Nash). The ceremony was conducted by the Friends of Shockoe Hill Cemetery. Veterans Administration and new headstones were dedicated to the four veterans. 14 Member leads Book Club Discussion at the Lancaster Community Library Book Group August 15, 2016 Mike Lyman led the Book Group's discussion of The Internal Enemy by Alan Taylor and showed documents related to the loss of the Corotoman slaves. Society Member to Supervise the Building of James Monroe s Birthplace House August 2016 Charles Belfield, a Counselor of this Society, has been designated as the supervisor to build the James Monroe birthplace house and out buildings in Westmoreland County, VA. This is a part of the James Monroe Birthplace Park that is also soon to be developed. Below is the newspaper article. Society Joins With the Unveiling of a New Virginia Highway Marker USS President HMS Little Belt November 6, 2016 The USS President- HMS Little Belt marker dedication was conducted Sunday November 6 at the Old Coast Guard Station in Virginia Beach. Carter Furr and Billy Simmons attended the dedication for the Society. Kathryn Fisher, Executive Director of The Old Coast Guard Station, and Chris Pieczynski were speakers. 14

15 Member Speaks to Groups in the Northern Neck Area of Virginia October 6, 2016 Charles Belfield, spoke to three different groups in the Northern Neck about the war of 1812 and the involvement of the Northern Neck Militia. October 6: First was to the Chesapeake Academy a private school, where about 100 students and faculty were in attendance. Charles brought a display that represented the War of 1812 and other periods of history. As the students arrived they were able to view and touch the items on display and ask questions. The story of the event was carried in the local paper the Rappahannock record. October 3: The second group was to the senior adults at the King George YMCA. There, Charles spoke about the war and the battle of the little white house. The picture is about half of the group. November 14: The third group was the Northern Neck Christian Association. There, Charles played the role of one of his own ancestors, Thomas Meriweather Belfield, a soldier with the Northern Neck Milita. He delivered a first person account of the war and his part in the defense of the Northern Neck. I am dressed in the militia uniform ordered by Governor Barbour. 15

16 Plaque Unveiling Ceremony North Farnham Episcopal Church and Captain Vincent Shackleford Richmond County, VA December 11, 2016 The Society unveiled a plaque at the North Farnham Church in Richmond County, a historic site. The plaque honored Captain Vincent Shackleford who commanded a militia artillery company and other elements of the Richmond County militia in a battle against British forces on the grounds of the church on December During the battle he was wounded and taken prisoner and later released on parole. In his will he requested that a musket ball in his body from the battle be extracted and used as a memento to instill patriotism in our mutual offspring. Virginia Regiment commanded by Lt Col Vincent Branham. During the period, April 6 to 10, 1813, his unit traveled to Lancaster County because of British incursions there. In July and August 1814 his unit was dispatched to Sabine Hall on route 624 in Richmond County. In September 1814 his unit went to Alexandria when the British were in the Potomac River there. And as described on the plaque, he established a defense of the North Farnham Church during the first week of December 1814 with his Artillery Company and Richmond County militia. During the battle he was wounded and taken prisoner. During the battle his unit had two killed and four wounded. The enemy acknowledged the loss of 15 killed and 31 wounded in the battle. Because of the cold weather the first portion of the ceremony was conducted inside the vestry hall of the church, then the attendees proceeded outside to unveil the plaque and for wreath presentations. CAPTAIN VINCENT SHACKLEFORD: He was born in 1785, son of Richard Shackleford, who died in 1794 and Margaret (Peggy) Landman, who died before him. He married Lucy Roane Brokenbrough, daughter of Colonel Moore Fauntleroy Brokenbrough and Lucy Roane Barnes. He was the Sheriff in Richmond County in 1817 and represented the county in the Virginia Legislature. He died in Warsaw, Richmond County sometime after the Aug 7, 1820 U.S. census. He commanded an artillery company in Richmond County in the 41 st 16

17 Member Speaks to Students at Mt. Airy Elementary School Pittsylvania County December 11, 2016 Larry Aaron spent time at the Mt. Airy Elementary school in Pittsylvania County dressed in 1812 attire and speaking with students. It was History Day and was complete with an outside blacksmith station and others in uniform. A station was set up inside to discuss the War of Larry wore his militia outfit, displayed the promotional material from 1812VA, and described the service of his own ancestors during the War of He also described Pittsylvania's participation in that war, the Star Spangled Banner, and showed the school children the flag. Lyman Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution This publication includes over 4,170 known Revolutionary War patriot burials in all Virginia counties and independent cities, including the City of Alexandria which belonged to the District of Columbia during the war period. It does not include counties now in West Virginia. Gravestone inscriptions provide the main source of material in the text of this publication, followed up with research about the veteran and his service. Records are arranged alphabetically by surname and include the full name of the veteran, date and place of birth (if known), date and place of death, rank and service unit or patriotic service, cemetery name, GPS readings (if known) and general location directions, gravestone information, spousal information, biographical information regarding the patriot, pensions and bounty warrants received, presence of society grave markers, registration data, service and burial sources. The names of 4900 non-veterans, such as spouses, parents and others, can be found in this fully-indexed work. The appendices provide a wealth of valuable information: Veterans List by County/Independent City, Cemetery List by County/Independent City, Code to and Bibliography of Service and Burial Sources, General Bibliography of Other Sources, Index of Other than Veterans, and Additions and Corrections.
