6 Optional Essays: Rhetoric After making sure your student is well prepared, dictate one or more of the following essays to him as a writing assignment or timed test (30 minutes): 1. The feudal system of the Middle Ages may seem restrictive and unfair to our modern minds, but as it developed, it provided social stability, steadier food supplies, and safety to many European people. Assess the validity of this statement. Answers: This essay is straightforward in that it gives the student three ready-made main points. The student should agree with the statement, for it s true. Social stability after the Dark Ages was a welcome relief, and though moderns look askance at the plight of the peasants, they did not starve as much under the feudal system. Peasants were afforded much protection from lords, who were the warrior class. As a grader, you are looking for the student to produce lots of concrete, specific, and accurate facts about the structure and benefits of the Feudalism. Your student may get tangled up in going into too much detail about the modern view of feudalism (and perhaps even adopt a position contrary to the statement). If he does, this essay will present an opportunity for essay test-taking skills, which involve circling important, central words in the question, and then sticking to those words by focusing your essay on the information the teacher is asking for. An A essay answer for this essay should mention the modern view (perhaps in the introduction and conclusion as a nice way to tie the essay together) but the essay is not about the modern view of Feudalism. 2. The feudal system proved to be a temptation that the Medieval Church found hard to resist. Discuss this statement in light of the following Scriptures. 2 Tim. 2:1-4 You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things which you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, these entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also. Suffer hardship with me, as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him as a soldier. Hebrews 12:1-3 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance, and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you may not grow weary and lose heart. Answers: This essay invites the student to sum up discussions on historical readings as they apply to Church History. The top paper will quickly outline feudal relationships and then explain the benefits churchmen who joined the feudal system received. (These included protection of overlords, ownership of valuable lands (and their peasant workers), and temporal power.) The essay will go on to say (in relation to the verses above) that Christians are often tempted to join worldly systems in order to receive temporal comforts, but that God warns His people (throughout the Bible) that they should carefully consider the dangers involved. Indeed, in these two passages, the authors (Paul and an unknown author) are encouraging Christians to prefer suffering to entanglement. Your student will no doubt reach unique conclusions revealing his own character and teaching as he associates this week s lessons with these Scriptures. If I were grading this essay, I d be looking for the values his writing reveals. Remember to grade for structure, content (facts he chooses to support his position), and overall conclusions. Note: there s no additional literature quiz this week. If desired, use student s written answers to the worksheet provided in the Student Activity pages for evaluation.
