1 Generation 1 1. Col. John Snoddy-1 [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. He was born Abt in Clinch River, Washington Co, VA [1]. He died on Dec 12, 1814 in Madison Co, KY [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]. Notes for Col. John Snoddy: This is the "Colonel John Snoddy" that was at Fort Boonesborough with Daniel Boone. This information was provided by Roxann Gess-Smith, 4897 Capistrano Court, NE; Salem, Oregon roglenn@open.org -- also from "The Snoddy Genealogy" provided by Cindi Meyer of Yorba Linda, California. He was Sheriff of Madison Co, KY in 1789 and He is buried in Richmond Cemetery, Madison Co, KY. A John and William Snoddy took the oath of allegiance to the State of Pennsylvania. Capt. John Snoddy served for several years as a militia officer in Major Daniel Smith's VA, on the Clinch River. He had no land grant recorded in Washington County, but he did own the Moore Fort land after the Moore brothers moved to Kentucky sometime after He assigned the fort land to Frederick Fraley and moved to Lincoln County, Kentucky sometime around 1783 or From here he moved on to Madison County, Kentucky, where he died 12 Dec leaving his widow Margaret, son Samuel, and John Jr., the later dying in March Capt. Snoddy held several offices of importance in Madison County, Kentucky before his death, which occurred in his 75th year, thus placing his birth1739. Descendants in Kentucky of Snoddy claim he was an associate of Daniel Boone, which is probably true and seems to be borne out by an entry in the Washington County Court of 21 March 1781 which reads: "John Snoddy producing sufficient proof to the court that he was possessed of a preemption (land grant) for one thousand acres of land in the county of Kentucky; that he sent the sale(?) along with Daniel Boone and it was lost and that he never received a warrant for the same." John Snoddy ( ) served as captain in Maj. Daniel Smith's Virginia regiment. He was born in Virginia; died in Madison County, Ky THE FIRST MILITIA ROSTER OF THE CLINCH RIVER AREA OF RUSSELL COUNTY JOHN SNODDY - This was Captain John Snoddy, born circa 1739 and who was a militia captain on the Clinch until his removal to Kentucky around He had married Margaret Walker, a daughter of John Walker who lived at the "sink" of Sinking Creek on a farm he called "Broad Meadows". Snoddy at one time owned Moore's Fort at Castlewood, which he sold prior to his removal to Kentucky to Frederick Fraley. He was a brother-in-law to Patrick Porter, and the Cowan brothers, David, William and Samuel, all having married Walker sisters. John Snoddy died in Madison Co., Ky. in 1814, and should not be confused with an older John Snoddy who served on the Washington Co. Court who lived at Abingdon. The older Snoddy married Agnes Glasgow in Philadelphia in 1741 and moved to Tennessee where he died in Information below found at: MOORE'S FORT Russell's Fort Byrd was located in lower Cassell's Woods o n the road leading to Dungannon, and is now owned by W. S. Banner and known as the "Sally Meade" place. This fort wa s built upon the land of Willaim Moore, who along with hi s brother, Joseph, settled in Castlewood in 1769, hence th e name Moore's Fort. The Moore brothers assigned their land warrants to Captain John Snoddy when they left the Clinch and since Captain Snoddy was a militia officer and at times was in command of Moore's Fort, as well as owning it, i t was sometimes called Snoddy's Fort From: Page 1 of 52 Friday, June 19, :05:23 AM

2 Generation 1 (con't) Patrick Porter, , and his wife Susanna Walker came to the Clinch from Guilford Co., NC, in 1772, and built a fort house on Falling Creek, as well as the mill some two years later. All that remains of the old mill today is some limestone rock foundation, a few runs of brick in the old chimney, and the mill burrs which have been moved to the lawn of the Lee Blackwell home nearby. This mill had one distinction and that was a chimney made of handmade brick. It has been written that Patrick Porter, his brother-in-law Captain John Snoddy and others organized a Masonic Lodge and held their meetings on the second floor of the mill. If this tradition is true it may explain why the old mill had a chimney and fireplaces, as no other known mills in the area had chimneys. Also this may have been the first Masonic Lodge organized west of the Blue Ridge Mountains Margaret Houston Walker is the daughter of John Walker III and Nancy Ann Houston [6, 7, 8, 9, 10]. They (Snoddy and the Moore brothers) were forted there (Crab Orchard) where they had moved from the Clinch. NOTE by ELH: Capt. John Snoddyswife, Margaret, really was a sister to Ann Walker Cowan, but I doubt that William and Joseph Mooreswives were her sisters, but in some other way the Mooresmight have been related. " Col. Notes for Joseph Walker Snoddy Sr.: This is verbatim from a letter from Thomas Jefferson Harvey (George & Narcissa's son): "Tablets Placed at Graves of Daughters of 1812" "The Armstrong Chapter Daughters of 1812 placed bronze markers Sunday afternoon at the graves of Mrs. Margaret Eliz. Snoddy Denny, at Roanoke cemetery and Mrs. Narcissa Snoddy Harvey at Walnut Hill Cemetery, bearing the insignia of the order with appropriate ceremonies. Rev. Angel, pastor of the Christian church at Fayette, made a fine address at the Walnut Hill Cemetery, and at Roanaoke. Mrs. A. Lee Siser, of Warrensburg, State Historian for the Daughters of 1812, made a brief address, and T. J. Harvey read a history of the Snoddy family from an early day when the ancestors first settled in Virginia. Mrs. Denny and Mrs. Harvey were sisters, and were real daughters of 1812, their father Joseph Walker Snoddy having been a veteran of the War of The tablets were unveiled by little Miss Mary Jane Taylor, great granddaughter of Mrs. Denny, and little Miss Martha Major, great granddaughter of Mrs. Harvey. There were thirty or more direct descendants of Mrs. Denny and Mrs. Harvey present. The Snoddys date back to the Seventeenth century with Colonel John Snoddy of Washington County, Va. On January 28th, 1777, at Blackfort, Abingdon, Virginia, he was acting as one of the 15 justices of the peace and helped to organize Washington County, Va. He was appointed justice of the peace by Governor Patrick Henry and with others took the oath. According to the history of Southwest Virginia, in 1746 to 1786 and Washington County, 1777 to 1820, page 225, he later moved to Kentucky where he was appointed one of the first judges of Madison County, Ky. He was married to Margaret Walker about the year 1775 and died in Madison County, Ky., in His son, Joseph Walker Snoddy, emigrated to Missouri in Joseph Walker Snoddy married in the year 1819 to Narcissa Hanna Foster and settled the place where the Snoddy brothers (John and R.L.) now live. He was buried on the same place. He operated the first grist mill in this section of Howard County. He was kind hearted and very generous for when some people wanted to buy flour and meal he refused to sell, but gave to his neighbors who were unable to pay. His children were as follows: Nancy Snoddy, married Stephen Garner; John Snoddy, married, first Miss Martha Thomson and second Mrs. Permelia Priest; Samuel W. Snoddy, married Susan Frances Harvey; Robert M. Snoddy, married Clemcy Woods; Foster Snoddy died in early youth; Jeff and Joseph died in war services for the states. Mary Ann Snoddy married Captain Alexander Denny and Margaret married Humphrey Denny and Narcissa married George Givens Harvey. A infant was bitten by a snake from which it died. We are missing a few of the older grandsons. John S. Garner, Geo. Foster Snoddy, William W. Snoddy, and Joseph Denny and many other descendants are still living in this community. Joseph Walker Snoddy was a soldier of the War of 1812; was a Ensign in Kentucky mounted volunteers. T. J. Notes for Samuel Snoddy Parkes: A History of Masonry in Madison County, Kentucky , compiled and written by Robert R. Burnam, 1914, p SAMUEL SNODDY PARKES was made a Mason in Kingston Lodge No. 316 in He was the son of John White Parkes and Nancy Snoddy and was born in Madison County near Big Hill on October 10, It was over this route that nearly all the stock was driven South in antebellum days. Mr. Parkes here saw life in all its phases. He went South when a boy a number of times with droves of hogs and mules. Later he removed to Missouri where he lived a number of years. On returning to Kentucky he became an official in the Farmers National Bank, organized in 1865, and has been connected with that institution and its successor, the Citizens National, continuously since that date. Few men have ever lived in our County who have enjoyed the esteem and confidence of its citizens as Mr. Parkes does. His name is a synonym for integrity, for justice, for everything which goes to make up the ideal citizen. His charities have been for years as unostentatious as they were bountiful. He knows the early history of the County and its people as few now living do. His reminiscences are delightful. He affiliated with Richmond Lodge July, 1867, and the following December was elected Secretary, serving four years as such. In December, 1873, he was elected Treasurer and has filled that station continuously for forty- one years. His own is the only vote ever cast against him. He still lives in the full enjoyment of all his faculties and delights in the society of his friends Kentucky Death Index, about S S Parkes Name: S S Parkes Death Date: 6 Jul 1927 Death Place: Madison Age: 097 Volume: 34 Certificate: ii. Notes for Alexander Denny: HOWARD COUNTY MISSOURI BIOGRAPHIES (Prairie Township) CAPTAIN ALEXANDER DENNY, farmer and stock raiser and dealer. Captain DENNY's life has been more than an ordinarily active one, as well as more than ordinarily successful. Soldiering, school teaching, mining, teaming, merchandising, farming and the stock business are the occupations that have successfully employed his time from early manhood to the middle of the afternoon of life, and in all of them he has shown that he possesses the qualities that win success in whatever situation one may be placed. Some will fail anywhere, others nowhere, and Captain DENNY is one of the latter class. He was born in this county, June 17th, 1826, and was a son of James DENNY and wife, formerly Miss Elizabeth BEST, both natives of Kentucky. They were married here, however, in 1818, the same year that his father cast his fortunes with the "Boone's Lick country." Alexander grew up on his father's farm in this county, and in youth secured a good ordinary English education in the common schools and by diligent study at home. When twenty years of age, being naturally of a spirited and enterprising disposition, he became a soldier in the Mexican war, enlisting under the old Missouri hero, General DONIPHAN, in 1846, and serving until the general discharge at New Orleans, in He then came home and engaged in school teaching, which he followed until That year the California gold excitement broke out, and young DENNY was one of the first to brave the hardships and dangers of a trip across the plains and over the cloud-capped heights of the Cordilleras, to the Hesperian gardens of the Pacific coast. Nor was he one of the faint-hearted many that lost their courage amid the trials of pioneer experience and returned to the feather-bed ease of home life. He remained until 1856, digging deep into the bowels of the earth for gold, and teaming through the Indian hemmed mountain canons. His California life was not without substantial results. Returning home in 1856, he engaged in merchandising and farming. In 1871 he conducted a successful store in Roanoke, but that year sold out and turned his whole attention to farming and the stock business. He has a magnificent farm of a thousand acres finely improved, on which he grows grain and other products and raises stock on an extensive scale. He is also one of the leading stock dealers in the county. During the late war, Captain DENNY commanded a company of enrolled militia, and acquitted himself of the service with marked honor. January 22d, 1856, he was married to Miss Mary A. SNODDY, and eight children bless their conjugal life: Lizzie B., Joe S., Fossie, Kate M., Zannie Page 17 of 52
