We shall miss you dear friend. The funeral was at the Huguenot church in Charleston; 44 Queen St. Subvets performed the two bell ceremony in church and flag folding ceremony at the grave site in church yard along with Taps and a 21 gun salute. 2 State Commander Hello and happy New Year to all, I confess I thought I had run into bad times and the future was looking grim. First we lost, Mike Walsh and Barney Chaplin in 2008, both went on eternal patrol with services by family and shipmates that gave pride to our veterans in submarines. On Monday before Christmas that lasted until the New Year, then our President succumbed to his cancer, Sy went on eternal patrol with a service to be remembered by his family and submarine shipmates. Further news, Mary Evans has had a small stroke but seems to be in good spirits new info will follow. Now is the time for me to reorganize and to insure the continuance of the swamp fox chapter. To honor our shipmates who gave their lives on our 52 submarines in WWII and to keep our comradeship among WWII and cold war submariners whom we are ever grateful for there help to us. Secretary: The last two months have taken a toll on us; we have lost three shipmates two from WWII and one from USSVI, Barnwell, Sy and Bob Chinn and just prior to that we lost Tom Walsh. I don t know where to start and what to say, when you make friends and become close as we are in submarines when you lose someone it hurts I know it does me but we must stick together and help each other and our families. John Nichols USSVI chaplain coordinated along with the Cob the two bell ceremonies all the families were very thankful for this honor and epically the presentation of the flag to the widows. The loss of the president and the treasurer has left us an opening for these positions, I have asked two members if they would be interested in filling these positions, for President Stacy Power and for Treasurer Mike Emerson they both agreed and will accept. This will be brought up under new business and voted on by members. Monies and checking account with the Credit union: I approached the credit union on what action should be taken as we have lost our two members that have signatures on our account, since I m the secretary I am authorized type on our letter head requesting this change of signatures and the names of the individuals, once the letter is delivered then Mike and Stacy will sign the signature card at the Credit Union and will have access to the account. March we have the Amberjack memorial service at white point gardens, at the battery, (march 21 I think) I need some volunteers to help with the program, Cdr Keith Wooster suffered a fall and has been in therapy for a while and I doubt if he will be able to help us, Hopefully Nick will fill in for us, need someone for the pledge and purpose, Saga of the Amberjack, usually the USSVI base Commander, WWII national prayer, need someone message from Adm. Lockwood Lee Allison, reading of the names, Dave Mueller (I hope) need someone to toll the bell, Taps, music me The new Amberjack memorial is still in the works, still have some kinks to work out, the list of names have the lost 52 boats and locations worked out now working on the Amberjack names graphics Remember February we have the Hunley memorial at the at the sunrise church The Charleston Base Submarine Veterans and WWII Submarine Veterans are invited to attend a Memorial Service honoring the 8 man crew lost on the Confederate Submarine H. L. Hunley along with the 5 crewmen lost on the USS Housatonic during the night of February 17, Date: February 17, 2009 (Tuesday) Time: 1900 hours -- (Arrive 20 to 30 minutes early) Place: Sunrise Presbyterian Church, 3222 Middle Street, Sullivan s Island, S.C, Church located near intersection of Jasper Blvd. and Middle Street by Breech Inlet Bridge (Sullivan s Island side) Uniform: Charleston Tuxedo, Blue Blazer w/dolphins, White or Light Shirt. 3 Mary Evans: Lee and Myself Roger went to Mary Evans at the NHC Health West Ashley care center today (Thursday 22 Jan.) she was in good spirits and had a good chat with her, she will be heading to Florida on the 30th of January with her niece and will be settled in an assisted living home, as soon as I get an address I ll put it in the news letter. Mary was the wife of Gunner Evans. Minutes of December 2008 meeting Meeting called to order: Lee Allison leading the pledge of allegiance; our purpose, moment of silence and the tolling of the bell for the lost boats for November and December. Lee, first lost boat was the sea lion in December Any new guests, Lorain her son Kris, Daughter and grandson of Abe Jenkins welcome. Honored Guests, the Barnwell family, do any of our members have memories of Barnwell, Mike Emerson sure do, when we sat around and told sea stories Barney told the truth, lee very honest and would tell it as it was, good shipmate, but Barney suffered a lot in the last three years never complained, came to meetings, never heard him complain, he was just that way. We shall miss him. Rhett, Barneys son, he loved this organization loved coming to the meetings, and treasured the wonderful things that happened this is one of the things he really enjoyed, the rest of the family thanked the sub vets for the two bell service you don t know how much it meant to the family. Stacy, Barney and I would reminisce about the early before the war and where he lived in Charleston and what school he graduated from then after the war went to collage raised his family, I really enjoyed him. Doc Murphy said Barney lived in Orangeburg for a while I m from there, (Roger, now I see why they left Ha) Lee, a mention was made, I have to say this the submarine veterans at the funeral were wonderful USSVI did the two bell ceremony every one put their whole heart into it, even though I thought we were going to loose a couple of the flag bearers the grave site was sort of rough, thank you so much for a wonderful job. Presentation to the Chaplin Family: Lee, I was trying to come up with something to honor Barney, but was unable to do it myself so I looked for help and found it in Mike Emerson a good friend and a carpenter and he came through, a flag and a display box made out of cypress to display Barneys vest and flag. The presentation was made by Mike and Lee to the Chaplin family Ethel May and Rhett accepted the display boxes. The flag was returned first then the vest. Rhett, Ethel May, Mike and Lee 3

4 Report on Sy; He is in health South and having trouble with his legs he is improving and should be home soon, also on Mary Evans she has suffered a stroke and is in the assisted living west Ashley, she was in the process of getting her legs operated on when she suffered a heart attack then developed a stroke, when we visited her she was in good spirits and seemed to recognize us but from what we have been told her short memory has been effected. She has resigned her position in the ladies Dolphins organization. The last word is her niece will be picking her up and taking her to Florida. Jack Stevens: Long story, Steve Nelms and Dave Mueller have been helping Jack with some of his traffic problems, well long story short, Jack is not allowed to drive any more, his son is here from Colorado taking and getting his affairs in order and taking him back with him after checking with all his doctors ECT Sold his condo so he is settling in an assisted living housing in Colorado, we shall miss you drop him a line. Treasurer: Acting Treasurer Sy Mabie still in hospital, we have monies in account.lee discussed what will happen to monies when we pass/shutdown Old/new business: Discussion on the Amberjack, we have received a sample from the Dyal monuments of the aluminum graphics mounted on black granite which was Quite nice and passed it around, other graphics of what we would like to see on the memorial, samples were passed around for all to see and for comments. We need your inputs. It is still in the works and after the holidays we will continue. Be careful out there Steve Nelms his wife was approached in the wall mart parking lot by a couple of crusty men and wanted to know if she would like to buy some mistletoe well those gentlemen were surprised when Wanda told them where to go, be careful out there.. Sad News Sylvester Maxon "Sy" Mabie MABIE, Sylvester Entered into eternal rest on the morning of Tuesday, January 13, 2009, Sylvester "Sy" Maxon Mabie husband of Constance Christophel Mabie; Residence, Summerville, SC. The relatives and friends of Mr. and Mrs. Sylvester "Sy" Mabie were invited to attend his funeral service Saturday, January 17, 2009, in The French Huguenot Church, 44 Queen Street, at one o'clock. Interment to follow in The French Huguenot Church yard; Sy was born on January 3, 1927 in Melvindale, MI, the son of Raymond Mabie and Martha Kwaschnick Mabie. He was a U.S. Navy Sub veteran of WWII, a member of Secession Camp #4 Sons of Confederate Veterans where he served as chaplain and received the chaplain of the year award in He also was a member of the Confederate Heritage Trust; Friends of the Hunley, The Holland Society; a Lifetime 4

5 member of Lincoln Park Masonic Lodge; VFW and The Huguenot Society. He is survived by his wife, Constance Mabie of Summerville, SC; daughter, Suzanne Graham and her husband, Bruce, of Bowman, SC; son, Sylvester Dave Mabie of Summerville, SC; five granddaughters: Andrea Hobday, Kimberly Murray, Shannon Keller, Jeanine Lantz, April Voglesang; 15 great-grandchildren; and Buddy Boy. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Star Gospel Mission, 474 Meeting Street, Charleston, SC 29403; and/or Charleston Animal Society, 2455 Remount Road, North Charleston, SC Gone on eternal patrol, rest your oars shipmate we have the watch.
