1 The theme for the 11-18s Team Challenge is All about Potiphar. Potiphar was an officer in the court of the Pharaoh, the king of Egypt and he bought a servant called Joseph. This is the same Joseph as you may have heard about from Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat and Any Dream Will Do. You ll see this theme in the different challenges but let s start off by sharing the story of Joseph and Potiphar from The Old Testament of the Bible. Joseph in the House of Potiphar (Genesis 39) Joseph was Jacob's son, and Jacob loved him very much. That was a good thing. But then, Joseph's older brothers got jealous and were mean to him. That was a bad thing. Jacob gave Joseph a wonderful new coat. A good thing. But that made Joseph's brothers REALLY jealous. A bad thing again. Joseph's brothers were so jealous, they decided to kill him. A really bad thing! But, at the last minute they decide NOT to kill him - a good thing - but to throw him into a pit instead. Bad again! But then Joseph's brothers decide to drag Joseph OUT of the pit, a good thing - and sell him to some travelling traders, so that he would never see his family again. Joseph wondered what was going on. But life is like that. Sometimes there are good times and sometimes there are bad times. But ALL the time, God is with us. But even more than that, sometimes God uses what seem like the worst times to do something wonderful. That s what was going on for Joseph! The travellers arrived in Egypt and sold Joseph to a man named Potiphar. Potiphar was an officer in the court of the Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. That worked out well, but of course God planned it that way! So Joseph went from being down a pit in the middle of nowhere to living in the beautiful house of

2 a very rich and powerful man in the land of Egypt, an important place to be. A bad thing turned into a good thing again! God was with Joseph, and he blessed him. Everything Joseph did for Potiphar turned out well so Potiphar gave Joseph more responsibility, including putting him in charge of all that Potiphar owned his crops, his house, everything. The only problem was that Joseph was very good looking and strong. This was noticed by Potiphar's wife and she wanted him. "Kiss me!" she said to Joseph one day while no one was looking. "I can't do that!" Joseph said. "My master trusts me! He has put me in charge of everything he owns. He is your husband. How can you ask me to kiss you??!! That would be wrong! And God would not be pleased with me at all." But Potiphar's wife would not give up. Day after day, she grabbed him and tried to kiss him. But Joseph always said no. But one day, she grabbed Joseph by his coat and wouldn't let him go. "I will not kiss you!" Joseph said, and he ran away so fast that he left his coat in her hand. Now Potiphar's wife was angry. She was so angry that Joseph would not kiss her that she decided to get even. She told Potiphar that Joseph came into her bedroom and tried to kiss her. "See, what I am saying is true she said. He even left his coat!" Potiphar was furious. He called for Joseph to be thrown into a cold, dark prison cell straightaway. Things looked pretty terrible for Joseph again. Maybe Joseph sat in his cell, shivering and scared, wondering "God, where did you go?" If only he could see the amazing things God had planned for his future when he would be called to interpret dreams. But for now, all he could do was trust in God, because God was with him. But that's how it is. Even in the darkest times, God is still with us. And even then God is at work with a wonderful plan for our lives. Taken from and adapted for GB Team Challenge. Ready steady cook! Aim of the challenge: Create a tasty, appealing ice cream sundae and work as a team. Equipment: One quarter of a 500g tub of ice cream (any flavour)

3 1 x fruit of your choice e.g. strawberries, tinned mixed fruit, tinned peaces, 1 x meringue nest 2 x shortbread biscuits 1 x bottle of ice cream sauce (any flavour) 1 x bowl 6 x desert spoons 1 x carrier bag to put above contents in Unpack your carrier bag of assorted ingredients. You have 4 minutes to create a tasty, appealing ice cream sundae. Be as creative as you can and work as a team! You will be given marks out of 10 by the facilitator for your final sundae and your teamwork. How long have you got? 4 minutes Facilitator to give points out of 10 using the guide below: 10 - out of this world! 9 - delicious and outstanding teamwork 8 - great teamwork and taste 7 - taste not great but worked well together 6 - doesn t loook edible and team didn t work together Points: Coping with an emergency Taken from n:counta track 20 coping with life Joseph found himself having to cope with life when he was thrown into a pit by his brothers and when he was thrown into prison by Potiphar. What items can help us cope in an emergency? Aim of the challenge: Remember as many items as possible. Leaders please see the separate sheet for equipment so that teams cannot see items in advance! Arrange the items on a tray and cover them with a tea towel. Give the team 1 minute to memorise as many items as possible without writing anything down. Cover the tray and move it out of sight. Give the team 2 minutes to write below as many items as possible that they can remember. Reveal the items and mark one point for every correct item. How long have you got? 1 minute to memorise, 2 minutes to write, allow another 2 minutes to mark. 1 point for every item correctly remembered Points:

4 Potiphar s hieroglyphics Hieroglyphics are a form of writing, like a code, which were used by the ancient Egyptians. Potiphar was an officer in the court of the Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. Aim of the challenge: take it in turns to put on Joseph s coat and find out what the hieroglyphics mean and work out/decipher the code. Equipment: One chair two metres away from team, another chair four metres away from chair A large coat or jacket Copy of hieroglyphic alphabet (enclosed with your pack) Copy of story with hieroglyphics (enclosed with your pack) chair with hieroglyphic alphabet on Line up the team and give them the story with hieroglyphics. Put a coat on the first chair and the hieroglyphic alphabet on the second chair (see diagram) 2 metres Team members take it in turns to look at the story with hieroglyphics and work out what one of the symbols means. Chair with large coat or jacket 2 metres team member team member team member team member start line You may choose to start at the first word or may choose a symbol and see how many words it occurs in. You may work out some words as you go along, remembering the story you just heard. Team members take it in turns to run up to the chair and put on Joseph s coat. Then hop to the chair with the hieroglyphic alphabet on and remember the symbol you are looking for. Run back to the chair, take off the coat, run back to your team and tell them what letter the symbol represents. The next team member then goes. Repeat as many times as possible in the 3 minutes time allowed. How long have you got? 3 minutes 1 point for every correctly deciphered hieroglyphic Points:

Because of his master s kindness, he didn't make Joseph haul bricks out to the. Instead, he had Joseph work in his home. Joseph worked very hard, looking for things around the that needed to be done and he did them on time and with good skill. Joseph had always been known as a and capable worker. 7 Bible look up Aim of the challenge: Look up the Bible references below in a New International Version (NIV) Bible and complete the sentences. Look in the contents page for the name of the book.
