1 Children Sabbath School Lesson #162 for Song for opening the Sabbath School: Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling, Calling for you and for me; At the heart s portals He s waiting and watching, Watching for you and for me. Refrain Why should we tarry when Jesus is pleading, Pleading for you and for me? Why should we linger and heed not His mercies, Mercies for you and for me? Softly and Tenderly Jesus Is Calling Refrain Come home, come home, Ye who are weary, come home; Earnestly, tenderly, Jesus is calling, Calling, O sinner, come home! Time is now fleeting, the moments are passing, passing from you and from me; Shadows are gathering, deathbeds are coming, coming for you and for me. Refrain Think of the wonderful love He has promised, Promised for you and for me; Though we have sinned, He has mercy and pardon, Pardon for you and for me. Opening Prayer requesting one of the little ones or mommies or daddies to give prayer Lesson #162: The Invention Isaiah 53:6 (KJV) All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. This Sabbath boys and girls, we will begin a new chapter in our lesson entitle, The Invitation in our study book Desire of Ages! Psalms147:3 (KJV) He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. Psalms 147:4 (KJV) He telleth the number of the stars; he calleth them all by [their] names. Psalms 40:8 (KJV) I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law [is] within my heart. Psalms 40:9 (KJV) I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest. Psalms 40:10 (KJV) I have not hid thy righteousness within my heart; I have declared thy faithfulness and thy salvation: I have not concealed thy lovingkindness and thy truth from the great congregation. John 6:38 (KJV) For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. John 6:39 (KJV) And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. Children s Sabbath School _ Lesson#162 ( )
2 Let s continue in our book Desire of Ages, Chapter #33, pages Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. {DA 328.1} These words of comfort were spoken to the multitude that followed Jesus. The Saviour had said that only through Himself could men receive a knowledge of God. He had spoken of His disciples as the ones to whom a knowledge of heavenly things had been given. But He left none to feel themselves shut out from His care and love. All who labor and are heavy-laden may come unto Him. {DA 328.2} Question: What words of comfort did our Saviour speak to the multitude that followed Him? And, by whom could men receive knowledge of God as well as rest when they are heavy-laden? Answer: Come unto Me, all ye that labor and are heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. And, only through Himself could men receive knowledge of God. All who labor and are heavy-laden may come unto Him. Song: Let s learn a beautiful scripture song dear one from the book of Matthew! Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV) Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (3 xs) Come unto me, all [ye] that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: (2 xs) and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28 through 30 For my yoke [is] easy, Come! Come unto me. Scribes and rabbis, with their punctilious attention to religious forms, had a sense of want that rites of penance could never satisfy. Publicans and sinners might pretend to be content with the sensual and earthly, but in their hearts were distrust and fear. Jesus looked upon the distressed and heart burdened, those whose hopes were blighted, and who with earthly joys were seeking to quiet the longing of the soul, and He invited all to find rest in Him. {DA 328.3} Tenderly He bade the toiling people, Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. {DA 328.4} Question: What brought about distrust and fear in the hearts of the Publicans and sinners? And, what tender words did Jesus bid the toiling people? Answer: Their punctilious attention to religious forms, the content with the sensual and earthly, and sense of want that rites of penance could never satisfy. And, Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. Children s Sabbath School _ Lesson#162 ( ) Page 2
3 In these words Christ is speaking to every human being. Whether they know it or not, all are weary and heavy-laden. All are weighed down with burdens that only Christ can remove. The heaviest burden that we bear is the burden of sin. If we were left to bear this burden, it would crush us. But the Sinless One has taken our place. The Lord hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6. He has borne the burden of our guilt. He will take the load from our weary shoulders. He will give us rest. The burden of care and sorrow also He will bear. He invites us to cast all our care upon Him; for He carries us upon His heart. {DA 328.5} Question: To whom was Christ speaking these words, Take My yoke upon you, and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls? And, what would happen if we were left to bear the burden of sin? Answer: To every human being. And, all are weary and heavy-laden. All are weighed down with burdens that only Christ can remove. And, it would crush us. The Elder Brother of our race is by the eternal throne. He looks upon every soul who is turning his face toward Him as the Saviour. He knows by experience what are the weaknesses of humanity, what are our wants, and where lies the strength of our temptations; for He was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. He is watching over you, trembling child of God. Are you tempted? He will deliver. Are you weak? He will strengthen. Are you ignorant? He will enlighten. Are you wounded? He will heal. The Lord telleth the number of the stars; and yet He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds. Psalm 147:4, 3. Come unto Me, is His invitation. Whatever your anxieties and trials, spread out your case before the Lord. Your spirit will be braced for endurance. The way will be opened for you to disentangle yourself from embarrassment and difficulty. The weaker and more helpless you know yourself to be, the stronger will you become in His strength. The heavier your burdens, the more blessed the rest in casting them upon the Burden Bearer. The rest that Christ offers depends upon conditions, but these conditions are plainly specified. They are those with which all can comply. He tells us just how His rest is to be found. {DA 329.1} Question: Why does the Elder Brother of our race (Jesus Christ) know by experience the temptations and weaknesses of humanity? Answer: For He was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. He is watching over you, trembling child of God. Question: To whom should we cast our burden to be delivered, strengthen, enlighten and healed? Answer: The heavier your burdens, the more blessed the rest in casting them upon the Burden Bearer. The rest that Christ offers depends upon conditions, but these conditions are plainly specified. Song: Let s learn another scripture song together dear ones from a book of 1 Corinthians! 1 Corinthians 10:31 (KJV) There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God [is] faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear [it]. 4 Take My yoke upon you, Jesus says. The yoke is an instrument of service. Cattle are yoked for labor, and the yoke is essential that they may labor effectually. By this illustration Christ teaches us that we are called to service as long as life shall last. We are to take upon us His yoke, that we may be coworkers with Him. {DA 329.2} Question: What does Jesus say the yoke is? And, what does He teach us by this illustration and do we become with Him? Answer: The yoke is an instrument of service like Cattle is yoked for labor, and the yoke is essential that they may labor effectually. And, Christ teaches us that we are called to service as long as life shall last. We are to take upon us His yoke, that we may be co-workers with Him. The yoke that binds to service is the law of God. The great law of love revealed in Eden, proclaimed upon Sinai, and in the new covenant written in the heart, is that which binds the human worker to the will of God. If we were left to follow our own inclinations, to go just where our will would lead us, we should fall into Satan's ranks and become possessors of his attributes. Therefore God confines us to His will, which is high, and noble, and elevating. He desires that we shall patiently and wisely take up the duties of service. The yoke of service Christ Himself has borne in humanity. He said, I delight to do Thy will, O My God: yea, Thy law is within My heart. Psalm 40:8. I came down from heaven, not to do Mine own will, but the will of Him that sent Me. John 6:38. Love for God, zeal for His glory, and love for fallen humanity, brought Jesus to earth to suffer and to die. This was the controlling power of His life. This principle He bids us adopt. {DA 329.3} Question: What is the yoke that binds to service? And, where were the places the law was revealed and written? Answer: The law of God. The great law of love revealed in Eden, proclaimed upon Sinai, and in the new covenant written in the heart, is that which binds the human worker to the will of God. Song: Let s learn our last scripture song dear ones from the books of Psalms! Psalms 40:8 (KJV) I delight to do Thy will O God Thy law is within my heart And Song: Many are the wonders Thou hast done There is none to compare with Thee Fill my heart with Thy lovingkindness Breathe on me breath Of the Living God How I long to see thy presence How I love to praise thy holy name. 5 Gather the little ones together! It s Story Time! Our book selection this Sabbath is entitle, Sons and Daughters of God Chapter 3-To Center Our Thoughts in Christ And be renewed in the spirit of your mind. Ephesians 4:23. {SD 78.1} The youth of today may be educated for the fulfilment of high and holy purposes.... They are pupils in the school of Christ, learning from day to day lessons of the divine Master. {SD 78.2} It is in youth that the affections are most ardent, the memory most retentive, and the heart most susceptible to divine impressions; and it is during youth that the mental and physical powers should be set to the task in order that great improvements may be made in view of the world that now is, and that which is to come. {SD 78.3} The amount of valuable knowledge that can be acquired by young men and young women can hardly be estimated; but to reach a high standard, they must close the door to the debasing thoughts that Satan would thrust into the mind, and refuse to yield to his temptations. The youth may acquire that which gold cannot buy, by cherishing a pure, strong purpose in endeavoring to be all that God designed they should be. The mind should be trained to dwell upon right themes of thought. They should study the Scriptures, and bring into daily life the divine rules which God has laid down for their guidance. He who has grown old in the service of God may find his mind a blank in regard to the things that are happening about him, and recent transactions may soon pass from his memory; but his mind is all awake to the scenes and transactions of his childhood. O that the youth may realize how important it is to keep the mind guarded, pure and clean, from corrupting thoughts, and to preserve the soul from all debasing practices; for the purity or impurity of youth is reflected upon old age. {SD 78.4} The truths of the Bible, received, will uplift the mind from its earthliness and debasement. If the Word of God were appreciated as it should be, both young and old would possess an inward rectitude, a strength of principle, that would enable them to resist temptation. {SD 78.5} Next Week We will continue with part 2 in our lesson entitle, The Invitation of our book Desire of Ages Closing Prayer request one of the little ones or mommies or daddies to give prayer.
