Enlarge Your Tents CHAIRMAN S REPORT Prayerfully, we looked forward to a peaceful campaign season followed by General Elections held in August. The year 2018 is full of hope, guided by the theme, Positioned for Impact Vision: A Community of Believers Impacting the World with the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ through the Transforming Power of the Holy Spirit. Mission: To know God and to make Him known through Evangelism and Discipleship. Core Values: Community; Integrity; Transformation; Accountability and Ministry. Enlarge Your Tents Introduction Whereas in 2016 we were guided by the theme, Behold an Open Door, in the Holy Spirit graciously gave us the theme, Enlarge your Tent Strengthen your Stakes (Isaiah 54:2). Looking back, we can indeed confirm that God was with us; for many tents were enlarged and stakes strengthened both in individual lives and in the ministry. We enumerate the great blessings God bestowed to CITAM and celebrate His favor upon us as a Nation despite the heated political situation prevailing then. Prayerfully, we looked forward to a peaceful campaign season followed by General Elections held in August. We indeed saw the Lord intervene in significant ways even though the election cycle was prolonged causing our economy and society to be greatly impacted negatively. In the same year, as a ministry, we engaged in strengthening the stakes as provided in our strategic 1 David Oginde (PhD.), Rev Presiding Bishop plan [ ] through the implementation of the various outlined pillars and objectives. Vision: A Community of Believers Impacting the World with the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ through the Transforming Power of the Holy Spirit. Mission: To know God and to make Him known through Evangelism and Discipleship. Core Values: Community; Integrity; Transformation; Accountability and Ministry. The Stake of Prayer As our custom, we began with a time of prayer and fasting, where we engaged in interceding for our individual lives, the ministry and the nation. The solemn assembly helped in culminating that season, and it was encouraging to see our members come together for corporate prayers. The place of prayer cannot be ignored, for it is the way in which we seek guidance from the Lord on how to go about the year under His blessings.
CITAM ANNUAL REPORT AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTS Enlarging the Ngong Sanctuary After worshiping in a tent for over 14 years, CITAM Ngong moved to a brand new ultra-modern sanctuary; we are in order to when we thankfully exclaim, behold an enlarged tent! This culminated in a colorful celebration by all of CITAM, when we officially dedicated the new sanctuary that was a direct fulfillment of our theme for the year. We thank God for Moving the Ark (MTA) campaign, where you members, gave overwhelmingly to support our commitment to move our congregation from the tent into a sanctuary. The Stake of the Family In line with our strategic pillar number one, Marriage and Family, we convened a Family Fest, where we hosted Rev. Peter Tanchi and part of his family, all the way from the Philippines. It was encouraging to see so many people respond to the teachings; relationships were restored and hope was renewed in many marriages. Issues affecting singles were addressed, the youth were encouraged, hearts mended, forgiveness experienced, and above all, a rallying call for family discipleship in CITAM was made. The Stakes of Discipleship (The Safari) The journey for personal growth and transformation through our discipleship tool, The Safari, continues. In we launched Embrace 1, emphasizing on the need to be intentional about relationships under the subject, living in love. We have seen God change many people s lives, reconcile families, create an understanding with each other despite differences in culture, tribes, educational background, status, and etc. Embrace The Call to Bond, strengthened the stake of relationships in! This was particularly designed to help us during the over-charged campaign and electioneering period. The Church Planting Stake Our commitment to plant churches across the country was rewarded by the birth of three congregations. CITAM Clay City opened her doors in December and the assembly is growing fast with close to one thousand (1000) people in attendance every Sunday! CITAM Meru is a work in progress, and plans are underway for services to kick off sooner than later. CITAM Nyeri In spite of the challenges faced in identifying a suitable location or facility for the assembly, CITAM Nyeri hopes to begin services soon. CITAM Kadolta Resort CITAM Kadolta Resort expanded her services by constructing modern chalets which now comprise a brand new Resort, offering camping site services too. The CITAM Kadolta Resort was opened for business at the end of the year. We encourage you as our members to market and use this excellent facility. Indeed, this is an enlarged tent! A New Constitution A Special General Meeting (SGM) was held in the month of July, to review and amend some aspects of the CITAM Constitution. This was in recognition that, in light of the growth experienced in the ministry in the recent past, there was need to adjust our systems and structures to be in tandem with this growth. We are glad that the members present recognized this fact and engaged in robust discussions that resulted in the amendments of several critical sections of the Constitution. The new constitution was duly registered and is available at the CITAM website. It was however disappointing that we initially could not raise the requisite quorum for this critical meeting. We therefore wish to urge our members, as the supreme governance organ of CITAM, to take the AGM and SGM meetings much more seriously, especially as we continue to grow and expand. We definitely need to strengthen our stakes in this area. 2
Enlarge Your Tents The Stake of Governance vs. Management In recognition of the need to enhance corporate governance, CITAM Leadership Summit (CLS), comprising of the Council of Elders, Deacon Board, and Senior Pastors, accompanied by the Senior Management, were taken through a five-day training on the subject by the Centre for Corporate Governance at Kadolta Resort. The training sessions further strengthened our fellowship as leaders and our resolve to perform at the highest levels whilst the stewardship of CITAM is in our hands. Forging Ahead The year 2018 is full of hope, guided by the theme, Positioned for Impact. The entire CITAM family is committed to not only impact one another internally, but also in all spheres of our influence, individually and corporately. We trust God for the opportunities He shall bring our way to impact individual lives, the marketplace, the church and our Nation. Thank You There is no doubt that CITAM has experienced tremendous growth in the last several years. With this, there is always the challenge that our tent could be blown off by the gusty winds that constantly and consistently bit against it. We therefore sincerely appreciate all those who hold fort in various aspects of this ministry. We especially acknowledge and appreciate the sacrificial and tireless work by our Trustees, Elders, Deacons, Staff, and Ministry Workers. It is because you availed yourself as God s instruments, and have served Him with singleness of heart, that we are where we are today. To those who serve behind the scenes, many with no designated positions, we appreciate you. To my dear wife Nancy for bearing with my late nights and regular travels thanks for tireless support. To our members whose unwavering support makes CITAM what it is, may He enlarge the place of your tent as He positions you for extraordinary impact in And to Him who is able to keep us from falling and to present us before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen. David Oginde (PhD.), Rev Presiding Bishop 3
CITAM ANNUAL REPORT AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTS From a single Assembly in 1959 to 20 Assemblies in
Enlarge Your Tents CHURCH SECRETARY S REPORT Isaiah 54.2 Enlarge the place of your tents, stretch your curtains wide, do not hold back, lengthen your cords, strengthen your stakes (NIV). A new business unit, CITAM outfitters was established at Kiserian and commenced operations in October to provide quality and affordable uniform to pupils in all CITAM schools.. Camp Kadolta was remodeled with new facilities that include: Spacious guest rooms, the kitchen, the dining room, a conference room, a swimming pool and staff houses Introduction This report is a review of the year and a reflection of the ways in which the Lord enlarged our boundaries as we also strengthened our stakes as a Ministry. It highlights core issues on Policy, Governance and Administration as they evolved during the period under review. Despite the challenges we faced as a country, going through a turbulent election year, the Lord was with us; granting us victory and steady progress on several fronts. Indeed, great is His faithfulness! Over the last 12 months, the Lord has granted extraordinary oneness of purpose and mind within CITAM leadership (Deacon Board, Council of Elders and Senior Pastors) that facilitated taking of courageous steps consultatively to address bottlenecks in governance and administrative systems that face CITAM as she grows and expands rapidly (Psalms 133). CITAM Governance and Leadership Deacon Board Meetings The Deacon Board held 8 meetings as scheduled, including Dr. Faith Thuita Church Secretary a number of special meetings as need arose. Board members also attended 2 CITAM Leadership Summit retreats that bring together the Deacon Board, the Council of Elders and the Senior Pastors. The sub committees of the Deacon Board worked tirelessly throughout the year under review. In July, the Board organized a Special General Meeting in line with constitutional provisions to deliberate on a raft of constitutional amendment proposals aimed at strengthening CITAM corporate governance and administration in light of the fast growth and expansion of the church. Church Plants We thank God for continued growth and expansion of CITAM over the years. From a single Assembly in 1959 with worshipers, CITAM has grown to 20 Assemblies in 2018 with over 45,000 congregants. 11 of these assemblies are located in Nairobi and nearby metropolis (Valley Road, Woodley, Parklands, Karen, Thika Road, Buruburu, Embakasi, Thika Town, Clay City, Athi River and Rongai): Six (6) in other Counties (Kisumu, 5
CITAM ANNUAL REPORT AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTS Nakuru, Eldoret, Kapsabet, Meru, Nyeri), and Four (4) in other Cities (USA, Romania, Namibia, East Timor). In line with CITAM s Mission, To know God and to make him known through evangelism and discipleship, the current strategic plan ( ) targets planting at least 2 churches every year. While the Deacon Board allocates funds for church planting annually, resources are stretched and we continue to trust God for provision to support the new church plants. During the period under review, 3 new churches were established at Clay City, Meru and Nyeri, in part through funds raised from special giving for missions in October. We thank God for the generous giving by our members to support this cause. Development of Policy Guidelines and a Strategy on church planting, both local and international are currently underway. Infrastructural Development After a long eventful journey, the magnificent CITAM Ngong Sanctuary was completed and launched with a great celebration in October by the Presiding Bishop, the Rev. (Dr.) David Oginde. The complex comprises of a 3000 seater sanctuary, a youth hall, classrooms, pastors offices, a cafeteria and a multipurpose meeting hall. In Thika Town, the Lord provided a 5 acre piece of property on the outskirts of the town where CITAM Thika Town assembly now meets. A 2000 seater tent was pitched and services commenced in Oct under the leadership of Pastor Justus Mugambi. Smaller tents are in use for Sunday school and fencing of the property is on-going. At CITAM Rongai, the congregation was finally settled on a 3 acre piece of property with a 2000 seater tented sanctuary. Classrooms and ablution block were constructed and cabro works and a chain link fence around the property done. Services commenced in October and the assembly which is under the leadership of Pastor Mathew Keli launched on 25th March To enhance capacity and quality of hospitality services, Camp Kadolta was remodeled with new facilities that include: Spacious guest rooms, the kitchen, the dining room, a conference room, a swimming pool and staff houses. Construction of the Resort was completed and facility handed over in February Besides saving on costs incurred for CITAM meetings, we trust that the resort will attract business and evolve to a retreat and meeting Centre of choice for individuals and groups in the coming years. It is noteworthy that for the first time since its establishment, the resort made a profit in the last quarter of. We are hopeful that this is a sign of good things to come. Business units CITAM business units besides being an avenue for ministry continue to offer vital services. Continuous monitoring and support from the business committee of the Deacon Board has led to strengthening of operations of these units with notable improvement in performance and increase in income earned. Remarkable improvement in performance of CITAM schools was noted in KCPE with the schools (Woodley, Buruburu and Kisumu) posting the best overall performance seen in recent years. Due to sustained poor performance against very high operating costs leading to massive losses over the years, the Board made a bold decision; to close Buruburu Senior School. The school has posted poor and declining performance leading to dwindling enrollment over the years, with a student population of 104 at the time of closure. This was further projected to reduce to 62 after 42 candidates sat KCPE in making it financially unviable. The church leadership and management has over the years taken steps to address prevailing challenges that included strong marketing and change of leadership to no avail. CITAM received consent from both the Ministries of Education and Labor to close the school. A transition committee constituted by the Board provided oversight to the process, to ensure that due process was followed to safeguard student and staff welfare. Buruburu primary school will be extended through creation of a boarding section from 2019 for optimal use of facilities vacated. A new business unit, CITAM outfitters was established at Kiserian and commenced operations in October to provide quality and affordable uniform to pupils in all CITAM schools. The idea was well received by parents and substantive sales were made in December through shops opened in all schools. We pray that this initiative will grow and expand in the days to come. 6
Enlarge Your Tents Missions and Outreach CITAM supports missionaries in local and international mission centers and looks forward to open more as the Lord provides and leads. Currently, CITAM provides missions and outreach ministry through the following: Six mission stations (Olturot, Archer s Post, Kargi, Gororukesa, Mataarba and Loiyangalani) reaching out to the Rendille, Borana, Burji, Samburu and Turkana communities in Marsabit, Isiolo and Turkana counties; Nine schools, TV and Radio as well as a Children s Centre. Internationally, CITAM has missionaries in Romania, East Timor, USA and Namibia. In, God enlarged and opened new frontiers for ministry that have great potential for impact in making God known among the youth in schools, colleges and the online community. The cooperative bank extended funding support to CITAM through the missions office for the Heaven s Gates Hell s Flames drama as part of their CSR program targeting empowerment of youth in schools and colleges. We thank God for the rich harvest of souls into His kingdom accruing from this investment, and pray for His blessing upon the bank even as it extends support for another year. CITAM also went a step further in embracing technology for evangelism and discipleship to accelerate fulfillment of the great commission (Matthew 28:18) and our church mission; To know God and to make him known through evangelism and discipleship through launch of the CITAM church online platform during the 2018 AGM. This is an opportunity for CITAM to take the Gospel where the people are in response to the Global digital mass migration. The initiative is coordinated by Urban Missions through the missions office. Giving - Tithes & Offerings Members commitment to paying tithes and giving offerings continued steadfastly, enabling CITAM to meet her obligations, and to fulfil her mandate as espoused in our corporate mission. It is our prayer that the Lord who sees what is done in secret will reward every giver for obedience in accordance with the abundance of His grace. Psalms 128:1, Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him (NIV). Moving the Ark The vision of moving congregations from tents to permanent structures is a process that began in 2012 and continues to date. Milestones in this journey include the completion of CITAM Parklands and CITAM Ngong. Plans for construction of the last 3 sanctuaries under the Moving the ARK initiative - CITAM Thika Road, CITAM Nakuru and CITAM Buruburu are underway. CITAM Strategic Plan - Implementation and Monitoring CITAM s 10 year strategic plan ( ) was launched in The Strategic Plan Oversight Team (SPOT) continues to oversee implementation of the plan on behalf of the Board through champions drawn from the management team who oversee specific pillars in the strategic plan. Leadership teams in all assemblies have now been sensitized with on-going support to ensure budget development is guided by priorities in each pillar. The SPOT is currently facilitating costing of the strategic plan while monitoring its implementation across CITAM. CITAM s restructuring Due to the current level of growth, nationally and internationally, the ministry has faced challenges in relation to efficiency and effectiveness of its operations. The Board in the year under review took several steps aimed at establishing an efficient and effective governance and administrative system that facilitates quick, smooth and robust services in all CITAM operations. This is in line with the Board s mandate, in consultation with the Council. to provide a mechanism for effective decentralization and coordination of the church to cater for administration and management of growth of the Ministry in Kenya and beyond. Extensive consultative forums that brought together the Board, the Council and the Senior Pastors deliberated on action/s necessary to address these challenges and to come up with an efficient organizational structure that is aligned to the revised constitution and the CITAM Strategic Plan. A task force appointed by the Board provided 7
CITAM ANNUAL REPORT AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTS Challenges leadership in this effort. This culminated in the presentation of Board proposals on constitutional amendments in a Special General Meeting held in July. Six (6) of the seven proposals presented were discussed and passed. The amended constitution was subsequently filed with the registrar of societies. The Board has subsequently developed a plan for restructuring CITAM to enhance efficiency in governance and administration in line with provisions of the constitution and the strategic plan. We pray that the Lord will continue to lead CITAM through this season of transition. Getting facilities for church plants in target counties, both for hire and/or procurement was a challenge that led to delay in rolling out new assemblies in Nyeri and Meru. Budgetary constraints against demands for improvement of infrastructure in assemblies were experienced in. Delay in finalization of sale of the Juja property to facilitate infrastructural development of planned projects. Capacity Building and Systems Strengthening Prayer issues That all ministry initiatives will remain focussed on fulfilment of the great commission (Matt 28:18) and CITAM s Vision and Mission in the year That the Lord of the harvest will send out workers into his harvest field (Matthew 9\.38), workers who are equipped and empowered with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8). CITAM is committed to building capacity of leadership and continuous strengthening of systems including leveraging on advances in technology to enhance efficiency in its operations. During the period under review, all members of the CITAM Leadership Summit received training on corporate governance. This is a five day training course offered by the Centre for Corporate Governance (CCG) for directors and senior managers. Besides enhancing knowledge, the training provided a forum for discussion of best practices in corporate governance as they relate to Faith Based Organizations. Members of the CITAM Leadership Summit were also trained on use of E-board, a software system that is customized to organizations to enhance efficiency of boards in the discharge of their mandate. Use of E-board continues to improve information and knowledge sharing among members of the governance and leadership organs and effectiveness in the conduct of meetings. God s guidance to the leadership in this season of restructuring CITAM in response to exponential growth and expansion. Provision, God s favour and leading as we scale up church plants to different counties across the country. Renewal of the work permit for Pastor Njoroge who returned to the country from Namibia. Hope Media Transition Br. Kingston Ogango whom God used to steer Hope Media to great heights left after serving as the head of media for 6 years. We welcomed on board Sir Henry Mahugu, a longtime member of CITAM who is visionary and brings on board extensive local and international experience in strategic business leadership as the new Head of Media in January We pray that he too will be used of God to expand the influence and impact of Hope Media nationally and internationally. 1 ASSEMBLY in 1959 with worshipers 8 20 ASSEMBLIES in 2018 with over 45,000 congregants.
