1 Volume X, Number 1 September 2 5, 1964 BRITISH SPEAKER LAYS OLD FOUNDATIONS IN NEW SETTING Spiritual L if e Emphasis Week Ends Tonight LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Tenn. (C P) B o m in a country v illag e in England, the bright* young son of an Anglican clergyman started out to make for himself an even brighter m ilitary career. A wound he received in World War I, how ever, put him on crutches ( " s t i c k s," as he calls them ), and frustrated all his "b est l a i d " plan s. As a very indirect result of this period of frustratio n, Capt, J. C. Metcalfe became Covenant*s tenth Sp iritual L if e Emphasis Week speaker, who w i l l give h is f in a l message tonight at 8 :0 0 p.m. in the chapel. At the outbreak of World War I I, Capt. Metcalfe re-enlisted for five more y ears. Although he was not a chaplain, he says of that time, " I look on that as my sem inary." One day as he was out on one of those famously B ritis h "fr e s h a i r " w alk s, he was caught in a sudden rainstrom and hobbled h elp lessly to the nearest building for sh elter. I t so happened this was a l i t t l e brethren " h a l l " and the service seemed to him, because of his own p articular denominational back ground to be "th e funniest thing I ' d ever seen in try l i f e! " Despite his bad fir s t impressions, Capt. Metcalfe was left with much food for thought and he sat "chew ing" it un til early in the morning, at which time he decided to give his l i f e to the Lord. He Is the author of many booklets, several of which are on sale in the Tuck Shoppe. A fter h is discharge, Capt. Metcalfe accepted the editorship of the maga zine The Overcommer. an enterprise which opened new opportunities for h is as a speaker and which has taken him to nearly every country in the w orld. This is his f i f t h v i s it to the States. Capt. M e tc a lfe 's English accent and idioms ("gone to town on i t, " "rogue e le p h an ts," " f u l l up to the back t e e t h," "t h a t 's another pair of sh o e s," "j o l l y c o l d," "popped u p," e t c.) frequent use of illustrations and parables, his droll w i t, and his use of startlin g statements have made him more than a pleasure to h ear. His messages, based on the foundations of the C hristian faith (the shedding of blood, works, f a i t h, the abiding l i f e ) have made Covenanters look for what Capt. Metcalfe has so obviously found for h im self: " a radiance of l i f e which nobody can take away or deny", *He was reading the New Testament in Greek at the age of fift e e n. After being neck" work. izin g th at, i t was merely a matter of "picked up by the scruff of the and thrust out into Christian He was responsible for organ several churches in needy areas.
2 Just as at a castle site on a mountain top one can survey the whole country s id e, students in college gain a broader perspective of world situatio n s. He spoke of a castle as a place of refuge when an enemy invades the c it y. When frustratio n, confusion and bewildernen arise in new areas of thought, the learning derived from Covenant College is to be a refuge. A castle was a place for training men for combat; Covenant students, soon to be fully thrust into the Christian b a t t le, should learn to d isc ip lin e themselves to think independently and o r ig in a lly. L a stly, he pointed out that a castle is a symbol of the prince or king in power. He challenged the students to make Covenant a school that stands for the authority of the King in residence. COVENANT'S TENTH YEAR BEGINS WITH DEDICATION OF NEW CAMPUS Nearly 400 persons sat with anticipa tion on the east lawn of the campus last Sunday looking toward the huge, solid stone archway which framed the p ulpit on the veranda and the speakers of an important and solemn ceremony at Covenant College conducted by school o f f i c i a l s, representatives of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, and local community leaders. As the event began, D r. Robert G. Rayburn, President of Covenant College, presided. In his opening remarks, he expressed appreciation for various con gratulatory messages from such impres sive sources as Tennessee's Governor Frank Clement, Allen Smith, a Georgia Department of Education o f f i c i a l, and from colleges extending from C alifo rn ia to Maine. The last part of the service included the Act of Dedication. In a rather emotional moment for many, Mr. Hugh Smith of H u n tsv ille, Alabama, presented D r. Rayburn with the key to the front door of the building which faculty, students and friends had prayed and worked for so ardently. Following the Prayer of Dedication and the singing of the college hymn, the Dean of the Faculty, Professor John W. Sanderson gave the Benediction. Those present at the ceremony were f i l l e d with gratitude to God for His magnificent b lessing and, above a l l, a personal sense of renewed dedication to Him. In the invocation D r. J. Park M cc allie, President of the McCallie School, dramatically noted that the Castle was a place "where the god of chance and the god of money once p r e v a il e d," but where "th e God of f a i t h, love and hope now reigns supreme." Mr. Carter Parham, President of the Greater Chattanooga Chamber of Commerce, spoke of the important investment Covenant is making in the youth of the nation, the Rev. W. Earle Stevens, read Scripture and offered prayer, and Covenant's Assistant Professor of Music John Hamm sang "The B u i l d e r."* A. S. *The lyrics of this very beautiful and strikingly appropriate song are reprinted below: From Dr. T. Stanley Soltau, main speaker at the se rvice, students absorbed all the penetrating rays of a challenging message in which he likened a Christian in stitu tio n of learning to a medieval c as tle, an appropriate allusion to C o v e n a n t 's new f a c i l i t i e s. THE BUILDER by James W. Friley I am th* 3u ild e r of Ca3tle and H a l l, And I lay the stone in the temple w a ll: I lay tfcs stone and I raise the tower, And mine is the glory of strength and power. 2
3 For I am the B uild er; Oh hear me sing The song of the sledge as its echoes ring. I am the B uild er; who walks with me The glory of cities upraised shall see And the towers that rise to the arch of the s k i e s, For I am the Builder - come walk with me! After a bustling week of ac tivities * which included placement exams, regis tratio n, hymn sin g s, a "work m orning," the ope'^jng all-school p ic n ic, the faculty reception and various other events, Covenanters are at la s t, how ever, beginning to get settled into the "c o lle g ia t e " routine. I am the Builder of forest and glade; I am the Hand that has hewn and made The peak of the mountain, the caves of the sea. I am the Maker of worlds that be. I f we are to judge the merits of course s on the basis of their beginnings, we can probably expect some real academic excitement again this year! After giving a detailed explanation of how carefully and san itarily scientists handled multi-million dollar "T e le sta r " as it was newborn, Mr. Pitcher in his Child Psychology class exclaimed with the most warm enthusiasm: "B u t, my friends every time you bathe and clothe a young child and put him to b ed, you handle something in fin it e ly more v a lu ab le!" Yes, I am the Builder of suns and seas, The Master of human d e s tin ie s. I am the Build er; who walks w ith me The glory of souls risen up sh all see; And I build with the Soul that is clean and whole, For I am the Builder - come vralk with me! UNIVERSAL INITIATION Professor Webber's speech class promises to be controversial in some c irc le s. One of his first classes was spent in giving a very amusing im itation of a typically frantic dorm representative's attempt to keep her "c h ild r e n " in line ( I t was an illu stra tion of how not to win friends and influence people! ). The newness of our present campus has made for a very special bond between upper and lower classmen. One senior had an experience not less hum iliating than having to don a beanie again: he felt obliged on his fir s t day here to ask a freshman the location of the mailbox! Of course upperclassmen have been able to shine in certain areas such as at the laundromat. The' g r e a ^ e s s pfcertain frosh was evident as one asked the other "H ey, Rick! What do I set this machine on hot or warm?" Answered his companion: "Warm. I t ' l l get done f a s t e r!" Perhaps in an attempt to overcome the handicap of the course title "Victorian Era^ which Seems to have been purposely invented to keep the class small, Mr. Holkeboer has introduced his "s c h o la rs" to a curious combination of Freud, metaphors and Sir Alfred Lord "Schm ultze" (with all due apologies to the great Sir A l f r e d ). After having put their ears to the lids to see i f the washers were s t i l l running, they left. A young man who followed was over heard to ask " I guess this red thing goes in with the colored clothes but what about the lit t le white dots on i t? " When interviewed on the subject of ironing he volunteered: "My mother taught me how to iro n, and I have an hour's worth of practice under ray b e l t. Now I have to figure out some way to study at the same tim e." A re n 't the new ones refreshingly enterprising? As a fin a l note in this department, we add that our Miss Brooks promises to get rid of all her problems this year by simply locking them out of the classroom! As most of the organizations and committees are settling down also, the members of the Bagpipe sta ff 3
4 wish to remind its readers that it is also in the process of in it ia tio n ; and especially now, as it lacks two of the elements essential to any really impressive publication (its own masthead and an experienced e d it o r ), we ask that you pardon our "wet ears" and return to its pages again next week! New professor to students on first day of classes! " I t is my job to lecture to you. It is your job to listen to me. I f you finish before I do, please raise your han d." CHORDS AND DISCORDS To The Editor: History Repeats It s e lf Most of us at one time or another have read "believe it or not" columns relating stories of people and the times which seem unbelievable. Recently a friend handed me a most incredible article and in the light of this year's presidential campaign I believe to some it would prove rather interesting. "Both President Lincoln and Kennedy were concerned with the issue of civ il rights. Lincoln was elected in 1860; Kennedy in Both were shot from behind, and in the head. Their successors, both named Johnson, were Southern Democrats, : snd both were in the Senate. Andrew Johnson was b o m in 1808, and Lyndon Johnson was born in 19G8. Lincoln's secretary, Kennedy by name, advised him not to go to the theater. Kennedy's secretary, whose name was Lincoln, advised him not to go to D allas. John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln in a theater and ran to a warehouse. Oswald shot Kennedy from a warehouse and ran to a theater. The names Lincoln and Kennedy, each contain seven letters. The names Andrew Johnson and Lyndon Johnson each contain thirteen letters. The names John Wilkes Booth and Lee Harvey Oswald, each contain fifteen letters I" Does history repeat itself? Andrew Johnson was not re-elected. Ulysses S. Grant (a Republican) was elected...h i s name begins with a G... History ought to repeat it s e lf every 100 years or even oftener in one sense. It surely would save campaigners a lot of trouble knowing that it was "sort of predestined already!" CHANTERS AND DRONES* Garry Sherrill Bagpipe Announces Policy Any studentsor members of the staff or faculty who wish to make contributions to The Bagpipe are encouraged to do so, but please be sure to submit it typed and signed (a ll unsigned articles are written by the editor) and by the following deadlines: All special features, creative writing and letters to the editor must be in by Wednesday noon of each week. The sophomore class is looking forward with great anticipation to initiatio n week. In light of t h is, FRESHMEN, BEWARE I New Student Service New to the Covenant campus this year is a service which all students w ill find useful. Early this spring a Christian businessman from Chattanooga offered to set up a branch of his dry cleaning and laundry service on the Covenant campus, arranging to pick up and deliver articles twice a week, on Tuesday and Friday at two in the afternoon. Aside from the usual operating expenses, he is returning 16 per cent of the total sales each month to the College as his gift to the Lord's work. You w ill find that the prices he has listed are lower than those of other local cleaning establishments. The service is not limited to dry cleaning and laundry; all types of clothing repairs and alterations are carefully and expertly handled. It is open daily from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 7 p.m. in Room 135. As an added convenience, wash cloths and nylons are now available for sale. CAMPUS CHOIR Rehearsals for Covenant's Campus Choir, from 6 :3 0 to 8 :0 0 P. M., w ill begin this Monday. Tryouts are not required (they trust y o u ), and all students, faculty and sta ff members are encouraged to attend. Sophomores Supreme? The time for freshman in itiatio n is here once more. The flock of blue beanies jauntily perched upon the proud heads of the new fresheen indicate that the fiery trials are about to begin. Let us all hope that they w ill emerge refined young p^cple worthy of the title "C o v en anter.' Seniors "Sneak" Two seniors have scooped The Bagpipe. Returning from a summer in New Jersey and Greenland, respectively, Bobbie Morris and Larry Birchler avoided the traditional Covenant congratulations at the time, anyway by announcing their engagement out of season. The Bagpipe congratulates Bobbie and Larry and leaves tradition to provincial Covenanters. The Bagpipe, weekly student publication of Covenant College, Lookout Mountain, Tennessee.
