1 The Purple Cloth Northeast Indiana District United Methodist Women February 2010 Volume I President s Message Dear Sisters in Mission, We are all called, from our families and jobs, for such a time as this! Thank you for joining us as we tackle the awesome task of putting together this new Northeast Indiana District, United Methodist Women. All is new and sometimes infants wobble a little. A very basic task is to introduce ourselves as your officers and get to know you. Please work with us as we gather your names and contact information so we can keep you informed. A member of the Executive Team will be contacting you for the names, addresses, phone numbers, and addresses for all of your local officers. You can keep up with the activities of our District United Methodist Women at: is a new year with a clear and well-established task. The work of mission to women, youth and children has been supported by our mothers and grandmothers for many years. Now it is our turn to carry on the task so lovingly established. I know that times are hard but this is not the first time in history when we have been financially challenged. The work of United Methodist Women continued in spite of war and depression, and I know you are all committed to keeping it going. As your president, I bring a broad background to this position. I am a psychologist and have taught as an adjunct faculty member at Huntington University and University of St. Francis. I ve directed the Counseling Centers at Taylor University and Bethel College and taught a three-week unit at the Caribbean Graduate School of Theology in Kingston, Jamaica. I am an author and speaker and have just finished writing a futuristic novel that has reverence for life as its theme. My husband Bill is a retired United Methodist minister, serves Zion UMC in Huntington and is the Chaplin at the Heritage of Huntington. We have six children, ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Isn t God amazing?! He has brought us together to know him more, to serve his missions better, and to wrap ourselves in the love of sister Christians all focused on the same goal. Now, who could have a better experience and life purpose than that?! Doris Rapp, President Bonnie Elam, Editor Inside this issue: V. President, Secretary, 2 Treasurer, Program. 2 PAGE 2 NORTHEAST INDIANA DISTRICT UNITED METHODIST WOMEN FEBRUARY 2010 From the Office of Vice President As 2010 began, I was reading one of my past journals. While reading, I came across an entry recounting a dream I had several years ago. In that dream, God spoke to me and said, Let go of what you are holding on to so I can fill your hands with something new. I have certainly found that to be true in my own life. Late last summer as I decided to let go of a job, God wasted no time in filling my hands with something new. In fact, it was that very day that I was asked to be the Vice President of the new Northeast District. I accepted with excitement and anticipation, opening my hands to receive new experiences, new ideas and new connections. This is indeed new for me since it is my first time to hold an office in the United Methodist Women organization. Let me introduce myself. My name is Carolyn Danielson. I am a member of the First United Methodist Church of LaGrange where my husband Chris is pastor. I retired after spending 31 rewarding years as an elementary school teacher (19 years in the Fort Wayne area). Chris and I have 3 adult children (2 sons and 1 daughter) and a 5 month old grandson. I enjoy reading, playing piano and guitar, and outdoor activities. I also began composing music for worship several years ago. It is truly amazing how God can direct and fill our lives when we let go of the old and trust his leading into the future. We have an exciting year of programs ahead of us at both district and conference levels. New learning and growth experiences for us all. I look forward to meeting you and assisting you in any way I can. As we begin this New Year in a new district and new conference, will you join me with open hands to see how God will fill them with that which is new? Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come, the old has gone the new is here. 2 Cor. 5:17 (TNIV) Blessings, Carolyn Danielson badydaniel@aol.com Secretary s Report Hi everyone, It is my privilege to have the unprecedented position as the 2010 Northeast District Secretary for the United Methodist Women. My objective is to establish procedures that will be effective and helpful in the future of our piece of God s kingdom in the Northeast District. I find great comfort in following in the footsteps of many secretaries that have preceded me in similar positions over the years. I have been involved in United Methodist Women for over 22 years and have held positions at the local, districts (old Fort Wayne, Huntington, and Marion) as well as the North Indiana Conference, Steering Nominating Committee and past webmaster for the former North Indiana Conference. The former South Indiana Conference permitted me to work with them for 1 year. My resume would include the Publicist for the Lucille Raines Residence as well as their webmaster. I feel a great appreciation that the United Methodist Women have allowed me to do all these things and develop my skills as a Christian lady. I live in Fort Wayne and am a member of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church. I look forward to being your District Secretary this year. If you (local secretaries) have any questions, feel free to contact me at bonnieumw@verizon.net (preferable contact method), (home), (cell). I work full time so will return s and calls in the evenings. Blessings, Bonnie Hansen

3 FEBRUARY 2010 Treasurer Your Northeast District Treasurer sends greetings to each of you. My name, Ardis Hendryx, will be familiar to some because I have served as Treasurer of the for the past three years. For those of you who may not know me, my husband and I are retired, have three adult children and eight grandchildren. Because our family is scattered between Indiana, Michigan and Texas we do enjoy traveling for special family occasions and celebrations. Looking ahead to the coming months I see changes not only in our organization s name but how we do things; yet in many ways things have changed very little. The mission work of the United Methodist Women continues to need your financial support, your talents and your prayers. The mission giving remains the five items Pledge to Mission, Special Mission Recognition pins, Gift to Missions (cards and monetary gifts), Gift in Memory and World Thank Offering. In addition many of you continue to support additional United Methodist Women mission projects. Some of you already have sent in your 2010 pledge amount. For those who have not I will be contacting you. NORTHEAST INDIANA DISTRICT UNITED METHODIST WOMEN PAGE 3 The Indiana Conference has asked each local unit to support the following groups for a total giving of $10.00 per member: Lucille Raines Residence $7.50 per member School of Christian Missions $2.00 per member Youth/Young Adult Service Fund $0.50 per member. Because the Lucille Raines Residence is a project owned and operated by the United Methodist Women of the Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church, your dollars are needed each and every day so please send your support several times throughout the year. If it has been awhile since you visited please consider scheduling a tour soon. I have been pleased to be a part of the Northeast District team and ask each of you to join in as we are called to serve. Ardis Hendryx Northeast District Treasurer 1625 Woodland Crossing Fort Wayne IN ahendryx@verizon.net Secretary of Program Resources United Methodist women believe that a necessary step in becoming active supporters of women, children and youth in need is mission education. We actively read and study about various parts of the world and issues faced by our sisters near and far. The Reading Program is a key piece of this mission education. I am so excited to be your District SPR person. I have begun to read the 2010 books and I must say they are thought provoking to say the least. Remember the Youth books count on all four Reading Plans. The 2010 Youth Book, Cecilia's Year, is a refreshing, charming story about a young girl with a head full of dreams. The children's books are beautifully illustrated. Children's books count on plans III and IV only. Plans I,II, III and IV require "Response Magazine" regular reading. To subscribe call The "New World Outlook Magazine" is required reading for Plans II, II and IV. To subscribe call Response and New World Outlook subscription links can be found at Also, book lists for can be viewed at or at umw/resources/reading-program/. It also has a downloadable reading program flier that you can use to write down all of the books that you read this year. You can also order books from this site. Blessings and Happy Reading!! Peg Conrad

As a former North Indiana Conference officer, I am excited to be a part of the new Indiana Conference by being your Northeast District Coordinator for Social Action. Although I have never served in this capacity before, I have a heart for social justice. This will be a learning experience for all of us. I live in Bluffton where I teach English at Bluffton High School. Dave and I have been married 34 years, and we have a son Adam and a daughter Lori, both of whom are married. Our biggest joy this past year was the birth of our first grandchild, Marley Marie Johnson, on September 22. Being a grandma is just as wonderful as many of you told me it would be! Our daughter is expecting our second grandchild, also a girl, the end of February. I also teach an adult Sunday School class at my church, Liberty Center UMC. One of my passions is Holocaust education because it connects so clearly with issues of justice. While I realize it is sometimes difficult for local officers to attend district events, I hope you will be able to get to one or two meetings. That will give us an opportunity to meet and share ideas. To cut down on postage expense, I would like to communicate through for those of you who have accounts. Please me with your address so I can set up my address book. My address is listed below. Be sure you notice the underscore after my initials. If you do not have , I will send you communication through land mail. Please contact me via or phone if you have questions or concerns. Thank you for answering God s call to serve in your local unit of United Methodist Women! In His service, Deb Johnson 1950 South No Number Road Bluffton IN dj_53@mchsi.com

7 FEBRUARY 2010 New Name for Our Newsletter Welcome everyone to the new Northeast District of Indiana United Methodist Women! What an exciting time to share in the Purpose of United Methodist Women! I am starting my third year as Communications Coordinator after serving two years in the Fort Wayne District. I am also the Communications person for our local unit at Good Shepherd UMC in Fort Wayne. As I m sure you noticed, our newsletter now has a real name. After much research and brainstorming of several possibilities, we have decided on The Purple Cloth. Since purple is the color associated with United Methodist Women and Lydia was known for her purple cloth and service to Christ, The Purple Cloth seems appropriate. The Bible and a Commentary by Lynne Chapman (writer and author) has this to say about Lydia- A Woman of the Bible: 13 On the Sabbath we went outside the city gate to the river, where we expected to find a place of prayer. We sat down and began to speak to the women who had gathered there. 14 One of those listening was a woman named Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to respond to Paul's message. 15 When she and the members of her household were baptized, she invited us to her home. "If you consider me a believer in the Lord," she said, "come and stay at my house." And she persuaded us. ~Acts 16:13-15 This Woman of the Bible is mentioned in only two short passages, both in the book of Acts, but what is said tells us a lot about her. She is described as: A dealer of purple cloth. Purple cloth was expensive and valuable as a sign of nobility or royalty so she was probably a wealthy businesswoman. Lucinda Pins NORTHEAST INDIANA DISTRICT UNITED METHODIST WOMEN The sale of Lucinda Pins continue to be a wonderful way to support Lucille Raines Residence. If your unit would like to have pins to sell at a special event or for any reason, call Marlene Crowder at PAGE 7 A woman whose heart God opened. Paul shared the message of the gospel of Jesus Christ and through God s divine work, she believed. She apparently was baptized right away along with the members of her household. Since her husband was not mentioned, I believe she was a widow. Lydia s household probably included children and servants. Whether the entire household believed or not, they now lived in a Christian home. A willing servant. She invited Paul and his companions to stay at her house. When God opened her heart, she believed wholeheartedly. She became a servant, tending to the needs of the missionaries. Later in Paul s mission, he returned to Lydia s home where he met with believers. Lydia had apparently become an active member of the church. As soon as Lydia believed, she went to work for Christ. She shared her faith with her family and servants. She opened her home to God s people and continued being of service to the church. I think that after a lifetime of faithful service, she met Jesus and was probably greeted with the words, Well done good and faithful servant. Come and share My happiness (from Matthew 25:21) Please continue to copy, distribute and spread the word through flyers and voice. Your help and cooperation is essential to keeping all United Methodist Women informed of upcoming events. If you have an article and/or picture you would like to see in The Purple Cloth, please feel free to send it to me. Blessings, Bonnie Elam Communications Coordinator 6919 Forest Glen Court Fort Wayne, IN belam@fwgoodshepherd.org
