Grand Knight s Message Brother Knights The month of September was a busy one for our Council, starting with the Tootsie Roll drive, soccer challenge and Oktoberfest. We start with the Tootsie Roll Drive that is almost done except for taking donations after Mass over the next two weekend and closing the book on November 1 st. Brothers, we have done it again and beat last year s numbers (awesome job everyone!) but a grand total will not be available until our final two collections. Watch next month s newsletter for the grand totals. We need to thank Tootsie Roll chairmen Ralph Marriott and Rob St. Clair for running this program for our Council this year and all the awesome captains. Great job guys! Next it was the soccer challenge and the word challenge is right. This program has struggled and we need to rethink this program next year in order to try to attract more kids to our event. If you want to be involved in the program next year or run it, please contact me. Let s talk about our most awesome Oktoberfest ever. We had over 240 people show up for dinner and we had 27 volunteers, including the awesome ladies from Sacred Heart s St Margaret s Guild and our Brother Knights, for the kitchen. Our hall board volunteered to serve up and keep a watch on the beer and wine (some taste tasting was required but somebody had to do it!) and our resident chef and Sir Knight, Keith Underwood, again did an outstanding job leading the volunteers. Thanks Keith. The Smiling Scandinavians had everyone smiling and dancing and our German gift basket was won by the Steele family, so who could ask for more? This event was a total success and from our profit, yes profit, we made a donation to Sacred Heart and St. Margaret s Guild. Awesome job everyone! The holidays are rapidly approaching and we have the KCIC Christmas display at Pellegrino s in Tumwater on November 22 nd (so please watch my weekly reminder for more details). The Knights before Christmas in December start with packing the lights, decorations and all the accessories on the December 5 th or 6 th (please watch s or next month s newsletter for exact date and time) and we will deliver the trees the morning of December 13 th. I am looking now for volunteers to be Santa s helpers (sleigh is required however a pickup or van will work in a pinch). Some elves are needed to help Santa deliver all the Christmas cheer. If you have never helped with this program, you have no idea on what you re missing. This to me is the most rewarding program our Council has and this is my fourth year running it. A soon as everything is delivered, I m already planning the following year s program. I hope to see my Brother Knight, Squires and their families helping us make sure everyone in our community has a Merry Christmas. This fraternal year we are doing an awesome job; we have bought in nine new members. We have also had five brothers transfer into our Council from other Councils. We have two membership drives coming up with the first one on Oct 26 th at Sacred Heart and the other one on November 16 th at St Michael downtown. I will be looking for kitchen volunteers to help with our pancake breakfast, and this is a great way for new members to get involved. Also watch for an upcoming membership drive at St Michael Westside in the very near future. I invite your comments and feedback on how you think things are going this fraternal year. My address is darrenejohnson@comcast.net, so please send me your comments. And PLEASE WEAR YOUR NAMETAG TO MASS BECAUSE PEOPLE DO NOTICE! God Bless, Darren E. Johnson, Grand Knight Page -2-

FOOD FOR FAMILIES HELP COMBAT HUNGER IN OUR COMMUNITY The Knights of Columbus is committed to ending hunger in our local communities by asking local councils to participate in the Orderwide Food for Families Program. Since 2012, the Knights of Columbus has donated over $2.7 million and 3.8 million pounds of food to local food pantries, community food banks and soup kitchens. Our council is happy to participate in this program. We ask that every member considers bringing a non-perishable food item to every council meeting, assembly meeting, and other event at Columbian Hall. Our goal is to collect at least 1,000 pounds of food by the end of January. We will distribute all the food collected to Thurston County Food Bank. 8 PRO LIFE NEWS REPRINT FROM NOVEMBER 2013: THE NUMBERS ARE EVEN WORSE NOW Planned Parenthood at 97 Years: 6,300,000 Babies Aborted, Billions in Profit This week Planned Parenthood wished itself a Happy 97th Birthday. Its Facebook page and Twitter feed featured the image of a single candle, atop a frosted and sprinkled cupcake, with the following words: 97 years ago the first Planned Parenthood clinic opened in Brooklyn, New York. Today, we celebrate the 3 million patients that come to us every year for high-quality, affordable health care. The American Life League took the memo head-on, with a counter-candle and a counterfactual of its own: Planned Parenthood is celebrating its 97th birthday. But the 6,300,000 babies aborted in its facilities won t even have one. babies-aborted-billions-in-profit/ SAVE THE DATE JANUARY 20, 2015 Tuesday January 20, 2015 is the date for next year s Washington State March for Life in Olympia and Mass for Life at St. Martin s University. Mass will begin at 9:30 am at Marcus Pavilion at St. Martin s University in Lacey. The March for Life will begin around 12:00 noon at the Washington State Capital steps." Page -8-

OCTOBER 2014 KNIGHT OF THE MONTH RALPH MARRIOTT Brother Knight Ralph Marriott with his Grandson Ralph Sawyer. The Father Nicholas Rausch OSB Council 1643 Knight of the month for September is Ralph Marriott. Brother Ralph joined in Oklahoma in 1994 and became a 4th Degree Knight in He has been active in many Knights activities such as Co-chair of Tootsie Rolls, dinners with Catholic Charities, and Special Olympics. He was in the Army for 28 years as a hospital administrator in San Antonio, TX and was regional medical advisor for the Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Louisiana. He then became a travel nurse at St. Peters Hospital in Olympia and other hospitals around the U.S., but disabilities have required that he retire. Before joining the Knights, and while in Texas, he taught RCIA for a number of years. As a cradle Catholic in Oklahoma, he had the fortune to attend daily mass while in grammar school. He is quite grateful for his experiences in the church and wishes to repay those blessings to the church community. He joined the Knights to be able to broaden his service activities within the church. Thank you, Brother Ralph, for all that you continue to do, and congratulations on being selected as our Knight of the Month for October. Page -10-

Front Row: Brother William McBride, his dog Echo, his wife Sherry, and a Power Lifting Special Olympics Winner. Back Row: Don Robbins. During the Tootsie Roll Drive, Echo was a champion at getting donations. OCTOBER 2014 FAMILY OF THE MONTH WILLIAM AND SHERRY MCBRIDE The Father Nicholas Rausch OSB Council 1643 Family of the Month for October is the William McBride Family. Brother Bill joined in June 30, 2014 as a 1 st degree Knight and has been active in Knights activities including the Tootsie Roll drive, and Pancake Breakfasts. He teaches the Baptism class for English speaking parishioners and is a Catechist for the teen s confirmation program at Sacred Heart. He and his wife of 14 years, Sherry, are also Eucharistic Ministers. She teaches Children s Liturgy of the Word and is involved in the Parish Nurse program, including providing blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring to the Hispanic parishioners every third Sunday of the month. Bill currently works at DSHS for the State of Washington as a Quality Assurance Specialist, where he has worked for the past 14 years. Before that, he was a licensed counselor at a traumatic brain injury rehab facility in Dallas, TX. Sherry is the director of nursing at RooLan Healthcare Center, a nursing home in Lacey. A cradle Catholic, Bill had not been Confirmed as a teen. But before his father s death, he promised his dad he would go through Confirmation which he did in 2012 at Sacred Heart. The most transformative event in his faith journey took place on the night Our Lord called his father home. His father was given two to three months to live; however, his father and he prayed the last night that his dad was alive that death be given that night so that his father could avoid a lengthy and painful death from cancer. And more importantly, his father didn t want his family to have to watch him suffer through this painful ordeal. That night Our Lord did take his father home. As a result of his experience with the Lord s response to their prayer, Bill felt he needed to repay the gift that he and his father received by spending a lot of time providing service to Lord s faith community. He wants people to enjoy life the way he has enjoyed it and shares his extensive travel and life experiences with those he is teaching. Thank you, Brother Bill, for joining the Knights and immediately becoming involved. Congratulations to you and your family on being selected as our Family of the Month for October. Page -11-

MEMORIAL MASS AND POTLUCK 6:30 PM THURSDAY NOVEMBER 20 AT COLUMBIAN HALL Our chaplain, Fr. Pat McDermott, Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, will celebrate this year s annual Memorial Mass at Columbian Hall on Thursday, November 20 th, 6:30pm, for recently deceased members, family members, and friends of the Knights over the past year. Our Schola will, of course, lead the singing. At the potluck to follow. Chef Sam Pellegrino will provide roast turkey Please be generous with the dish you supply. Food suggestions if your last name begins with: A-G Salads, i.e. garden variety with dressing, cole slaw, fresh fruit, etc. H-J Dinner Rolls and Butter, self-explanatory K-M Starchy Side Dish, i.e. mashed potatoes, yams, pasta, etc. N-Q Veggie Side Dish, i.e. broccoli, green beans, corn, etc. R-Z Dessert, limited only by the imagination RSVP to Sam Pellegrino, or sam@pellegrinoscatering.com. Please indicate what you intend to provide for the potluck meal. KEEP CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS Once again this year, Brother Sam Pellegrino, along with a group of volunteer Knights and Squires, will build the Keep Christ in Christmas display on the patio of Pellegrino s Italian Kitchen, 205 Cleveland Ave. in Tumwater. Prior to Thanksgiving, we will need 16 trees ranging in height from 4-12 feet. We will also need 4 bales of straw. Set up of trees is scheduled for Saturday, November 22 nd. We will need all the help we can get from Squires and Knights! That morning, Sam will provide warm food and beverages for the cold and hungry volunteers. All of the twinkling net lighting and some of the wiring will again have to be replaced; all statues are in need of re-painting, the big angel and the deer figurines are becoming very worn, not to mention the dramatic increase in the cost of electricity. Your financial help with this project would be greatly appreciated. Tax deductible contributions can be made to the Knights of Columbus and mailed to Jim Pivec at 2406 Dublin Dr. NW, Olympia, or Darren Johnson at PO Box 3511, Lacey, Checks should be labeled Keep Christ in Christmas Project. Thank you in advance for your generous support. Page -12-

SEMINARIANS DANIEL AND PETER STEELE Our council is providing financial support for 8 seminarians studying for the priesthood and two postulates pursuing their vocations as nuns. Below is some information on Daniel and Peter Steele two brothers from Olympia who are studying for the priesthood at Mundelein Seminary near Chicago. Dan Steele I graduated college from Central Washington University in 2008 and landed a job in Kennewick, WA in my field, graphic design. I was twenty-three years old and living on my own; with a girlfriend I would visit on weekends, who was finishing college in Ellensburg. My brother Peter had joined a Franciscan Friary down in Alabama around this time. From time to time I would visit him and stay in the Friary with the brothers. My visits to the Friary were life changing. The men there lived with a freedom and a joy that I had been searching for. Their vows of poverty spoke volumes to me; they were happier than I was and they had no possessions. I craved the joy they had and decided to do something about it. I began to get more involved in my faith, developing a deeper prayer life, and eventually I began to hear a tiny whisper of what came to be my call to the priesthood. It was a call I had heard many years ago when I was a boy, but was not ready to hear. After the difficult period of discernment, I finally surrendered and said: yes. I have never been the same since. In 2010 I became a seminarian for the Diocese of Yakima, where I started my seminary career studying philosophy at Mt. Angel Seminary, OR. Two years later I finished the pre-theology program there and I was sent to study theology at Mundelein Seminary, near Chicago. Currently, I am in my third year of theological studies, with one year to go till priestly ordination. God willing, in May 2015, I will be ordained to the transitional Diaconate with my brother Peter. The journey has been incredible thus far; I have never known such joy. It just keeps getting better and better. Page -13-

Peter Steele My name is Peter Steele and I am a seminarian for the diocese of Yakima Washington. I am currently in my fifth year of seminary and at the end of this year I will be ordained a deacon and at the end of my next and final year I will be ordained a priest. My vocation began when I was around the age of nine. I simply read the lives of the saints, realized how awesome they were and decided that I wanted to try to be like them. For some odd reason I intuitively felt that for me priesthood was the way to do that. What is strange about the whole thing is that you have all kinds of huge dreams as a kid about being a pro skateboarder or owning a candy factory but eventually you end up lowering the bar a little bit like I did and settle for a part time job at Walmart where you eat lots of candy while watching skateboarding. However while my other seemingly crazy plans faded away the idea of priesthood never did. I was always convicted that it was simply what I was going to do. Yet even though I never questioned what I now recognize as a calling from God, I did manage to put it off. I knew I wanted to do it eventually, but in the meantime I was just caught up in hanging out with my friends and doing as little work as possible so as to maximize my skateboarding and videogame time. It wasn t until I was challenged by a priest friend and my parents to step out and attend a Quo Vadis Day vocational discernment camp and later visit religious communities like the Benedictines and Franciscans that this calling finally began to become a real possibility for me. On these visits I encountered a happiness which was far greater than anything I had known in my previous life and it didn t pass away after the fun moment was gone. Simply put after tasting this joy I could never go back to my small and mediocre life that I lived before. From that day I fell in love with the Lord and ever since have been following Him on this crazy adventure. I remember being really scared just before I decided to enter, but ever since I have made the decision I have never regretted it. Now I always pray, Lord thank you for saving me from the lame and boring life I had planned for myself. My prayer for everyone, especially the young people of our world today, is that they can recognize that their life on this earth is not just an accidental or random sequence of meaningless events, but rather that they have been loved into existence and are called to play a unique and irreplaceable role in the plan God is working throughout all of history. It is only by living out this role God has for us that we can be the people He created us to be and discover the joy He has created us for. Page -14-
