3 Series Descriptions 3 Series 1. Biography Series 1 consists of documents and photographs that contain biographical information about Theodore Pease. Included among these items are clippings and magazine articles, University of Illinois administrative reports, documents related to honor societies, and memorials and retrospective articles written after his death. Series 2. Education Series 2 includes materials related to Pease's time as a student at the Lewis Institute and the University of Chicago. Items include class registers, diplomas, certificates, programs, academic awards, and letters and photographs from Pease recorded and taken while researching for his dissertation in England. Series 3. Military Service Series 3 consists of correspondence, documents, and memorabilia related to Pease's military service during World War I. Documents include letters to family members and colleagues; notebooks and programs from Fort Sheridan; officer's commissions; orders and reports; diaries and individual recollection sheets; histories of the units that included Pease; maps of Europe; scrapbooks; and photographs. Memorabilia in this series include shoulder patches, propaganda, wartime pins, and commemorative medals. Series 4. Teaching and Research Series 4 contains records related to teaching and research conducted by Pease during his time at Pennsylvania State College, the University of Chicago, and the University of Illinois. The records include letters of recommendation, appointment, and position offers; other correspondence with faculty and students; letters and papers related to a research sabbatical; and other research papers. Series 5. University of Illinois: Department and Campus Series 5 contains papers about the History Department and main campus of the University of Illinois. These include faculty information and photographs for the Department of History; departmental course listings and subjects; papers for departmental committees focused on instruction; organization, research, and department chairperson searches; papers related to graduate school instruction and research topics; correspondence of the Senate Library Committee; and correspondence with other departments at the University of Illinois and other campuses.

4 Series 6. University of Illinois: Individuals 4 Series 6 includes correspondence with individuals who were affiliated with the University of Illinois. The series contains two sections, with the first section containing letters with or about department colleagues, graduate students, and others on campus and the second section containing correspondence with and about undergraduate students. *Some items in this series are letters of recommendation which are restricted for 80 years from the date of their creation. Series 7. Books Series 7 contains materials related to books published by Pease including The Leveller Movement, The County Archives of the State of Illinois, The Frontier State, The Story of Illinois, The United States, and other publications. These include advance pages and pamphlets, full copies of the books, book reviews, correspondence and comments about the publications, correspondence with publishers, and early drafts and outlines. Series 8. Articles Series 8 contains copies of encyclopedia and journal articles published by Pease along with related materials. The series includes printed and published copies of the articles, typescript copies and drafts, notes, and correspondence related to specific articles. Series 9. Unpublished Papers Series 9 contains unpublished papers related to lectures presented by Pease. This series includes typescript copies of the lectures, programs, and correspondence about individual lectures. Series 10. Book Reviews Series 10 consists of book reviews written by Pease for the American Archivist, American Historical Review, Mississippi Valley Historical Review, and other journals. Materials included in this series are a list of reviews written by Pease, printed and typed copies of reviews, and correspondence related to the reviews. Series 11. Illinois State Historical Library and the Illinois State Historical Society Series 11 contains records related to the Illinois State Historical Library and Illinois State Historical Society. Included among these items are biennial reports by the editor of the society s journal, letters regarding staff appointments, research trips, copies of reviews from the journal, correspondence with others, and circular letters from the Historical Society.

5 Series 12. Other Organizations and Correspondents 5 Series 12 contains records related to other organizations and correspondents. This series includes reports, questionnaires, programs and correspondence of the American Historical Association; programs, correspondence, membership cards and acknowledgements for the Chicago Historical Society; letters and memorandums from the Clements Library at the University of Michigan; correspondence with the Social Science Research Council, Society of American Archivists, and Society of American Historians; and correspondence with other individuals. Series 13. Miscellaneous Series 13 contains other records and memorabilia. This series includes correspondence with genealogists, gift acknowledgements from the University of Chicago, travel notes, announcements and programs from a dedication ceremony, theatre and concert programs, Charles Dickens and other memorabilia, World War II ration books, and records related to gardening. Series 14. Research Notecards Series 14 contains research notecards for courses taught or taken and publications written by Pease. Notes for Western History , History of the West to 1818, courses at the University of Chicago, The Leveller Movement, The County Archives of the State of Illinois, The Frontier State, Illinois Election Returns, and Illinois on the Eve of the Seven Years War are included in this series.
