Bass C hairma n - E meritus Fort Worth Dear Mr. Trezevant: The Texas Parks and wildlife Department ITPWDJ operates San ]acinto Battleground State Historic Site and is responsible for many aspects of its stewardship - the battlefield, historic buildings, and site interpretation. Another one of those responsibilities includes maintaining the historical markers placed on the monument walls. The San facinto Museum Association has received your correspondence and turned it over to TPWD to determine if the historical record documents the participation of your family member in the Battle of San facinto and to determine whether or not, within the criteria set forth in L936, your ancestor's name will be added to the commemorative plaque. In order to make this determination, TPWD has employed a highly qualified researcher who is long familiar with the historic site. Unfortunately, his research has yielded no support that strengthens an amendment to the commemorative plaque. Carter P. Smith Executive Director This contracted historian and TPWD staff advises families that the criteria set forth during the Texas Centennial-era of 1936 when the plaque was first conceived were narrow: only the names of those who participated actively in the battle or were hospitalized at Harrisburg were to be included. Many contributors to Texas independence were in the general vicinity and were ably serving the Texas cause. Some of them have exciting stories quite apart from the actual engagement with Santa Anna's army. We hope that you and your family will continue to be involved in Texas history via the story of your ancestor's heroic efforts during the Texas Revolution. We further hope that you will join in the San Jacinto Festival on April 16, 201L. Col. William Ward, having crossed the Guadalupe and reached the area of Dimmit's Point (25 miles east of Victoria), was oveftaken by Gen. Jose Urrea. Forced to sunender on22march 1836, he and his men were marched back to Goliad and confined with honor and respect and sent on parole to the United States, General Santa Anna considered the prisoners to be a hindrance and expense and ordered their executions. The prisoners were marched outside of Goliad and shot. Of Ward's 107 men, the following prlsoners escaped capture. David I. Holt, F. Davis, Joseph Andrews, Wm. S. Butler, Samuel G. Hardaway, L T. Pease, --?-- Trezevant, Aaron S. Mangum, Reason Banks, Allen Ingram, M. K. Moses, H. Rogers, Samuel C. Pitman (or Pelman), James C. Greene, George Rounds, C. F. Hick, B. T. Bradford, J. D. Rains, Perry Davis, H. G. Hudson, W Simpson, and Nathaniel R. Brister. Analysis: Samuel G. Hardaway is on the same Fannin muster roll as J. P. Tressant. Allowing for variant spelling, this datum is consistent with the description of Hardaway and Trezevant's escape from the Battle of Coleto Creek. Bob Trezevant states that James P. Trezevant's "bounty grant (issued 16 Jan. L838) for 320 acres was for a relatively short period of service (21 Dec. L835 to 30 Apr. 1836) and that he did not receive a donation grant based on any battle..." However, Miller, Bounty and Donation Land Gronts, does not have an entry for Trezevant that fits this description. Instead, documentation from Miller is that Trezevant applied for and received both Bounty and Donation land grants to which he was entitled. His Donation Certificate was for being a participant in the Battle of Mission Refugio. Because he was not eligible for two Donation grants, he was not eligible to receive land if he had participated at San Jacinto. The Donation Certificate information contained in Miller does appear to confirm that Trezevant was the same Tressant in Fannin's command but was detached from the main body at Victoria. Captain Mosely Baker, Company D, was one of the "slightly wounded" in the Battle of San Jacinto. lmuster Rolls of the Texos Revolution, pp. 69, 203, Neither Hardaway nor Trezevant ( or any variant spelling) appear on Baker's muster roll, nor does Trezevant appear on the list of wounded as described in the extract quoted from an account by Charlotte Trezevant

6 5 Gignilliat: "The day after he got into camp was the battle of San Jacinto [April 2L, 1836], in which he was badly wounded." The primary document in support of James P. Trezevant is the personal narrative of Samuel G. Hardaway, who states that Trezevant and two others were with him during their escape from capture after the Battle of Coleto Creek, that a Texan spy company found them and took them to Houston's army, and that they subsequently fought in the Battle of San Jacinto. Based on this account, which Hardaway wrote as a letter to Macon Georgia Register, Louis W. Kemp determined that Hardaway's name had been omitted from the official rolls. Hardaways's account gives credence to the possibility that his compatriot, James Trezevant, was at San Jacinto. The affidavits signed by Harday and Trezevant agree on every detail of service prior to April Neither, however, mentions Trezevant as a participant in the Battle of San Jacinto. In his Fannin biographies [not included with the General Biographies, which include three entries for Trezevant], Louis W. Kemp described Trezevant'service under Captain Uriah Bullock and subsequent escape with Hardaway. Kemp referenced a letter from Trezevant [affidavit] in the Court of Claims files of the General Land Office that described Trezevant'service before and after the Battle of San Jacinto without any reference to the battle. From that omission, Kemp concluded that there was insufficient evidence to place Trezevant in the battle. In sum, no documentary evidence on Trezevant's activities during the critical days of April 1836 has been located. The letter written by Charlotte Trezevant Gignilliat describing Trezevant's wounds at the battle are insufficient to overturn Kemp's original conclusion. Just as likely, Trezevant could have been wounded at any time during the Battle of Mission Refugio or his perilous escape. Recommendation: Consultant recommends the name of James P. Trezevant not be added to the San Jacinto Honor Roll and Monument plaque.
