Music will begin at 9:30 a.m. and the worship time will begin at 10:00 a.m. Joyful Noiz June Years on Cherry Lane Back on Sunday, June 23, 1968, we held our last worship service at Zion Mennonite Church on Broad Street, Souderton. It was a short service and then the congregation walked the few blocks through Souderton to our new home on Cherry Lane. Led by Charlotte Strouse, the familiar refrain, We re marching to Zion, beautiful, beautiful Zion was sung through the streets of town. It s hard to believe that was 50 years ago. An official dedication service was not held until October 20, On June 24, we will have a special worship service to celebrate our fifty years here on Cherry Lane. We will begin our celebration that day outside the doors of Cherry Lane entrance near the cornerstone (weather permitting). Then we will all go into the sanctuary together for the worship service, just as it was done in We will combine aspects of that first worship service and dedication service same hymns, same choir anthem, and litanies of dedication of various areas of the church. The Joyful Noiz is published monthly by Zion Mennonite Church. The editor is Jennifer Moyer. Contributors this month included: Nancy Constanzer, Janet Davis, Yvonne Detweiler, Bekki Dibble, Suzanne Gunden, Rod Kratz, Sonya Stauffer Kurtz, Jenn Landis, Mike Landis, Laura Martin, Eric Musselman, Katie Musselman, Ron Price. Next Deadline for the July/August issue: June 10, 2018 Zion s church picnic is usually held in the beginning of June, but we will be moving it to Sunday, June 24 to go along with the celebration. Please mark this date on your calendar. You will not want to miss it. Congratulations to all the graduates. We will be honoring you on June 10. We hope you will be able to join us. A New Beginning As you make a new beginning in your life, graduate, be aware of important things you didn t learn in school: As you pursue your dreams, remember to take time to help and serve others even if doing so slows you down a little. As you explore and develop your unique talents, remain humble, realizing that your special abilities are gifts from God. As life hands you challenges, welcome them as ways to become smarter and stronger. As you acquire material things, know that your most important possessions are honesty, integrity, and the desire to make a difference. Congratulations, graduate. May your new path take you where you want to go and also bring you pleasant surprises! By Joanna Fuchs If your birthday or anniversary is incorrect or missing, please notify the office.

4 Joyful Noiz June May Page 4 4 Creati n Care Tidbits The 3 R s- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle- Zion and the Second R Joyful Noiz June 2018 Page 17 How can we at Zion tackle the second R Reuse? One way is holding a shoe collection for Soles4Souls each summer. Another way is collecting bicycles to be refurbished by Bike and Sol. Another great way is through volunteering at Care & Share Thrift Shoppes. On the second Friday of each month, members of our church spend a morning or afternoon helping at the Clothing Store. (Don t worry this is not the Big Sale Friday!) The types of duties that we do are: putting new clothes on the racks, assisting customers at the dressing rooms, cashiering and bagging, showing customers jewelry and greeting customers at the front door when they enter and make sure they know about the weekly special discounts. Each week a different color tag is 50% off, and also, a certain category such as pants, shoes or children s clothing, etc. is discounted. You can choose the type of job that you like to do. It is a fun way to fellowship with other members of the church and get to know them better. It is always neat to see the new items coming in, some treasures and some things that are quite unusual! This is a great way that our church helps raise money for Mennonite Central Committee and helps to reduce waste. As a volunteer who helps 3-13 hours a month, you will receive a 25% discount on any regular price item in any of the thrift stores every day. Fourteen hours or more a month (or working 7 hours on a Saturday) earns you a 50% discount. A nice perk! We also get a break during the time that we work and there is coffee, water and some treats available in the very nice lunch room. Lockers are provided for your belongings. I am the coordinator for our church so let me know if you would like to join our group or have questions. You can choose morning (9-1) or afternoon (1-5), but any amount of time that you can help is appreciated. We would love to have you join us! Another way to Reuse is through a website called Freecycle.org. It is a way to give away items that you no longer want and to get stuff you need for free! You set up an account and choose the region(s) in which you want to be part. For example, I am part of the Hilltown and Lansdale groups. You post items you want to offer or list items you need. You can send a message to people about items they have listed, and people will message you about items you post or list as a need. Continued to page 5..

5 Joyful Noiz June May Page Recipes Worth Sharing Strawberry Boston Cream Pie =========================== Cake: 1-1/4 cups flour 1 cup sugar 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 3/4 cup milk 1/3 cup shortening 1 egg 1 teaspoon vanilla Pudding: See Note 1/3 cup sugar 2 tablespoons corn starch 1/8 teaspoon salt 1-1/2 cups milk 2 egg yolks, slightly beaten 2 teaspoons vanilla Topping: 1 pint strawberries strawberry glaze whipped cream (opt) Cake: Mix ingredients and pour in a greased 8-in square or round pan. Bake at 350 for 35 to 40 min. Pudding: (See Note *) Cook sugar, cornstarch, salt, and milk until thickened. Add one half mixture to egg yolks. Stir well. Add vanilla after pudding is removed from heat. Cool cake and pudding. Split cake in half and put the pudding in center. *NOTE: I use a box of Vanilla Cooked pudding instead of making my own pudding. Instead of using 2 cups of milk, use 3/4 cup milk. It makes it a little thicker. Topping: Mix sliced and glaze. Spread on top of cake Garnish with whipped cream Servings: 8 Yvonne Detweiler Joyful Noiz June 2018 Page 5 Creati n Care Tidbits, continued from page 4. You set up a time and place for the pickup. I recently offered a box of clay pots and a box of blank VCR tapes and got quick inquiries about them. The ladies picked the items up at our house and it was interesting to meet them and hear how they planned to use the items. You will be surprised how many people are looking for things that you think are insignificant and you would probably throw in the trash! A neat concept to encourage Reuse and who doesn t like Free for a price? Suzanne Gunden Table of Plenty Talk The Table of Plenty continues to serve delicious meals three times a week during the lunch hour. In spite of a few weather cancellations, we had a wonderful winter and start to spring. At each meal, we typically serve between patrons. If you are interested in volunteering or just learning more about TOP, please feel free to chat with me! There is no better way to find out more than to just jump in and volunteer for a day. Volunteers arrive at 10am and leave around noon - a brief commitment! I am currently working to fill up the summer schedule. Volunteers take care of tasks such as setting the tables, making coffee, making sandwiches, heating up soup, plating desserts (and maybe taste-testing one as well!), cleaning up, and chatting with patrons. Each day (M,W,F) is led by someone different but capable; I am very thankful for the women who have made the commitment to lead their given day. If you aren't able to be at church during the week, we are always happy to have more soup in the freezer! I am grateful for the well-oiled machine that Janet Hartzel left when she retired; it has made stepping in as coordinator as simple as possible. I am also incredibly thankful for the time and effort that Jenn Moyer put into keeping TOP running during the transition. Thank you for your support of TOP. Please continue to keep our program in your prayers. Katie Musselman

Magpie s Blanket by Kimberly Schmidt and Jennifer Whiteman Schmidt brings to life the history of Plains Indian women and the white invasion - an account not solely of violence and bloodshed but also of healing and forgiveness. Through the memories of three generations of Cheyenne people, the novel recounts the events of the Sand Creek Massacre of 1864 and the Washita Massacre of 1868 and the century - late reconciliation after the townspeople s misguided attempt to re-create the battle of the Washita with descendants of US soldiers.
