I know it is not quite Advent but it will be here before you know it. A newer tradition here at Christ the King is having a time of Advent Wreath Making. We will do this again this year. You may wonder why we have Advent Wreaths. A resource for worship leaders in the church, Sundays and Seasons, puts it this way. The wreath and winter candle-lighting in the midst of growing darkness strengthen some of the Advent images found in the Bible. The unbroken circle of greens is clearly an image of everlasting life, a victory wreath, the crown of Christ, or the wheel of time itself. Christians use the wreath as a sign that Christ reaches into our time to lead us to the light of everlasting life. The four candles mark the progress of the four weeks of Advent and the growth of light. Sometimes the wreath is embellished with natural dried flowers or fruit. Its evergreen branches lead the household and the congregation to the evergreen Christmas tree. In many homes, the family gathers for prayer around the wreath. November 20, throughout the morning there will be wreath making supplies in Van Oort Hall for anyone that would like to make a wreath. We do need greens for this though. Do you have evergreens on your property that you could cut several limbs off of for us to use? Please let Pastor Terri or Craig know if you can help us with this. Devotionals will be available for families as well. I encourage you to come and make a wreath to help you keep the focus on Christ this Advent season. The world wants us to jump right to Christmas and skip the preparation time but as Christians we need a time of reflection and preparation as we prepare for Christmas but also for Jesus return. I hope to see you there. Pastor Terri

4 4 The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church Sunbeam Corner 2017 Jamaica Trip Planned The dates for the 2017 trip to Sunbeam Boys Home in Jamaica have been set for July The teenage youth in the congregation will be joining the team as their mission trip for Two informational meetings were held in early October to provide details for the trip. If you are interested in going but were not able to come to one of the meetings, please contact Craig (Youth Dir.) or a member of the Planning Team: Chuck or Andy Trundle, Tom Hake, Sally Dixon or Don Zerfas for more information. Sign-up for the trip will officially begin on Sunday, November 13 in the narthex. A $100 non-refundable deposit will be due at sign-up and the team will be limited to 18 participants. Annual Celebration Dinner a Big Success: Sunbeam Assoc. for Mission (the non-profit organization that owns the Sunbeam Boys Home) held their annual fundraiser on October 1 in the Minneapolis area. Chuck and Andy Trundle and Don and Cookie Zerfas attended this year's gala affair. There was a silent auction and a live auction that raised approximately $20,000 for the home. We contributed some candy from S.B. Chocolate Factory and some candy dispensers made by Tom Hake to the silent auction. The highlight of the night was when four young men who had been raised at the home (three of which now live in the states) talked about their experiences growing up and what a difference it made when mission teams starting coming to the home. They shared, "The teams would show us love and share their love for Jesus with us. They also brought us needed resources to help us learn. All this gave us hope that our lives could change." The feelings expressed by these four young men was certainly affirmation of the tremendous work that Christ does through this organization and the mission teams that go to Sunbeam. Thanks be to God. TRUNK OR TREAT THANK YOU... to everyone who helped with this year s Trunk or Treat. The Corwin family s Duck Dynasty theme is on the left and the Gregory brothers are in their costumes on the right.

7 The King s Herald Christ the King Lutheran Church 7 SPIRITUAL LIFE TRUST IN GOD All of us plan ahead: making arrangements to get together with family and friends, scheduling appointments, attending worship, praying, preparing for holiday, birthday, and anniversary celebrations, allotting time for household chores and yard work, exercising, shopping, vacationing and travel. It is good to make plans. In reality, however, we never know for certain what tomorrow will bring. But, we know who guides us through all our tomorrows and who gives us what we need to proceed along the way. As Moses and Aaron led God s people in the wilderness, they complained about dying from hunger. Then the Lord said to Moses, Behold I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day s portion every day (Exodus 16:4) They were instructed on the sixth day to gather twice as much as they gathered daily, so they could observe the Sabbath rest on the seventh day. Each man was to gather as much as he could eat, according to the number of people in his tent. The people listened and obeyed God. He provided for them, and they always had enough to eat. In the Lord s Prayer, we pray: Give us this day our daily bread. (Matthew 6:9-13) We ask God to provide us with what is sufficient for that day. He honors our prayer by doing that for each of us. Although, like his people in the wilderness, we also find that His provision is not always what we expected or wanted. We are not always grateful. God does not give up on us; he encourages us with His Word. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. (Proverbs 3:5-6) Thou dost keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee, because he trusts in thee. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock. (Isaiah 26:3-4) Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day s own trouble be sufficient for the day. (Matthew 6:34) No one loves each of us more than our Heavenly Father loves us. That is one amazing fact to consider! Think about the love each one of us has for our spouses, children, siblings, friends, people in need. And yet, these loves pale in comparison to God s love for us. HE GAVE HIS ONLY SON TO DIE FOR YOU AND ME!!! Which one of us would choose to give his child to die? I would not. But then, I m not God. Above all, God is cheering for us to be all He created us to be, and that s a tall order. We strive every day of our lives to attain that, and it doesn t matter that we don t always succeed. It matters that we never, never stop trying! Here s one of my favorite songs. It was written by Carolyn Adkins in the late sixties. Listen to the Collingsworth Family s recording of it on YouTube. It is very uplifting. FEAR NOT TOMORROW In this age of uncertainty, questions come to my mind. Are you troubled o er things to come? What is waiting ahead for me and the rest of mankind? Is your future unsure? Fear not tomorrow. God is already there. Are you dreading the coming dawn? A long day to endure? He s charting the course you ll take. Fear not tomorrow. God is already there. He sees each hidden snare. He s charting the course you ll take. He s waiting to guide you through each burden and care. He sees each hidden snare. Fear not tomorrow. God is already there. He s waiting to guide you through each burden and care. Fear not tomorrow. God is already there. Many things about tomorrow I don t seem to understand. Oh, but I know who holds tomorrow. And I know, oh, I know. Yes, I know who holds my hand. Fear not tomorrow. God is already there. Already there. In His Name Diane Huwaldt Member of the Spiritual Life Committee
