1 2018, APRIL GENERAL CONFERENCE JEOPARDY WHAT IS THE SUBJECT? 100 Elder Holland spoke on the subject of ministering. He said the primary purpose in this ministering idea will be, as was said of the people in Alma s day, to watch over [the] people, and... nourish them with things pertaining to righteousness " He quoted Mosiah 18:9 as an example. Find and read that scripture. 200 Elder Bednar gave the example of Amulek forsaking his wealth and family in order to follow Alma into the mission field. He gave the example of Pahoran s reply to Captain Moroni when he wrote him a scathing letter asking for help. He gave the example of both Pres. Nelson and Pres Eyring who took the counsel of Pres. Monson to reading and study the Book of Mormon. What are these examples of an attribute of Christ that was the subject of Elder Bednar s talk? The Christ attribute of meekness. 300 What did Elder De Feo say was the sign of every true disciple that was the subject for his talk? Pure Love 400 Pres. Oaks used the scripture from Alma 37:6 as the subject of his talk. What was the subject. (IF NEEDED: Find and read that scripture.) 500 Pres. Ballard warned that too many spend life online with smart devices and screens illuminating our faces and earplugs blocking out everything else. He urged us to find time to unplug. Then quoted a phrase from Psalms 46:10. Find and read this verse. Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. QUESTIONS ANSWERED? 100 Elder Hawk spoke on forgiveness and asked these questions: Are there people in our lives who have hurt us? Do we harbor feelings of resentment and anger? Are we keeping pride from forgiveness and letting go? He then quoted this Book of Mormon scripture on the importance of forgiveness. Find and read 3 Nephi 13:14. TEACHER S NOTE: He promised us that if forgiveness does not come today, know that it will come as we work on it. 200 Elder Anderson said some people ask the question: When is a prophet speaking as a prophet and when is it just his personal opinion? He quoted President Nelson answering that question 36 years ago. How did he answer that question: Pres. Russell M Nelson: I never ask myself, When does the prophet speak as a prophet and when does he not? My interest has been, How can I be more like him? My experience is that once you stop putting question marks behind the prophet s statements and put exclamation points instead, and do it, the blessings just pour. (from August 1982 Ensign) TEACHER S NOTE: Elder Andersen said, and now he is the Lord s prophet! 300 Pres. Ballard said the Lord sends mortals to accomplish his work. Men and women are called to accomplish a great work, called to serve in various assignments, doing their best but no one perfect. Then he asked this question: Given the reality of our human weaknesses, how do we move forward in

2 supporting and sustaining each other? How did he answer this question? It begins with faith. Faith in the Savior is the first principle of the gospel. 400 Elder Uchtdorf told the story of the first Easter Sunday. He said we celebrate life. Those involved in that event, could see Jesus but could not behold him. They did not have eyes to see. What did he say it means to Behold, the man. When we behold the man, we learn of him and seek to align our lives with him. We repent and strive to refine our natures and grow closer daily to him. We trust him and live up to our sacred covenants. We become his disciples. 500 Sister Bingham answered questions about ministering. She asked us a simple question to explain, What did the Savior do? Give an example she used of what the Savior did to minister. He also smiled at, talked with, walked with, listened to, made time for, encouraged, taught, fed and forgave. He served family and friends and neighbors and strangers alike. Those simple acts of service and love provide a template for our serving today. WHAT DID HE SAY? 100 Elder Stevenson gave us insight into the changed that occurred in calling President Nelson as the prophet. He used the term Apostolic interregnum? What is apostolic interregnum? The time between the death and until a new prophet called. 200 Elder Anderson told us what the most important role of the Lord s prophet is? What did he say? The most important role of the Lord s prophet is to teach of the Savior and lead us to him. 300 Elder Wakolo taught that an ordinance is a sacred act performed by the priesthood. Saving ordinances are ordinances essential for salvation. Name one of the ordinances that he listed as a saving ordinance. Baptism, confirmation, ordination for men, temple endowment, and marriage sealing. 400 Elder Godoy taught us that sacrifice comes from the word sacred, to make things sacred. He said that sacrifice brings the blessings of heaven. He then listed three reasons why and what we learn from sacrifice. Name one. 1. Personal sacrifices strengthens us and gives more value to the things we sacrifice for. 2. The sacrifices we make for others blesses us as well. 3. The sacrifices we make is small compared to the sacrifice of the Son of God. 500 Pres. Nelson taught us that the privilege to receive revelation is a great gift of God to his children. He will assist us in all our righteous pursuits. The heavens are open and God wants to speak to his children. He then outlined through the example of Joseph Smith how to receive personal revelation. Name one of his steps: Find a quiet place, turn to God, pray about concerns and very longings of your heart and then listen. Write the thoughts that come to your mind, record feelings and follow through actions you are told to take. Repeat this process and you will grow into the principle of revelation,

3 WORDS OF OUR PROPHET 100 President Nelson announced five new temples. Name one of the countries or US city where there are plans for a new temple: Argentina, India, Nicaragua, Philippines, Layton, Utah; Richmond, VA; and major city in Russia! 200 What did President Nelson announce in the Sunday morning session of Conference? "We have made the decision to retire 'home teaching' and 'visiting teaching' as we have known them," he said. "Instead, we will implement a newer, holier approach to caring and ministering to others. We will refer to these efforts simply as ministering." 300 What did President Nelson say was one of the things the Spirit has impressed upon my mind with his new calling that was the subject he spoke about at the Sunday session of conference? How willing the Lord is to reveal his mind and will to us through personal revelation. 400 President Nelson said that we live in a 24 hour news and social media which bombard us with relentless messages. If we have any hope, we must learn to do what? Receive revelation. TEACHER S NOTE: He also warned that in the coming days it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the constant influence of the Holy Ghost. 500 President Nelson said that this was a life-changing conference. In his final remarks, name one thing he counseled us to do: Study the messages frequently and repeatedly during the next six months and incorporate these teachings. We are entering a new era of ministering. Live in complete fidelity to the covenants and ordinances we receive. STORY TOLD! 100 Bishop Causse told the story about getting the land to build the Paris, France temple. Tell the story: While preparing for the construction of the Paris France Temple in 2010, he met with the mayor and his team to tell them about the Church. To his surprise, the mayor didn't want to see a presentation that Bishop Caussé had prepared; his team had already done their own investigation. They attended a sacrament meeting and met with the neighbors of a stake center to find out "what kind of people you Mormons are." Their conclusions? "We discovered that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the closest to Jesus Christ's original church than any other church we know of." Furthermore, the mayor and his team found no objections to building a temple in their community. 200 Elder Renlund told the story of Orson and Parley Pratt. Parley and Orson Pratt were early converts to the Church and ordained apostles. Both faced trials of faith but came through with unshakable testimonies. However, during the Nauvoo era, a deep rift developed between them in While Parley wrote a letter attempting to resolve the dispute, Orson didn't reply. Tell the rest of the story and what it was that brought them back together: Several years later, in 1853, Orson learned of a project to publish a book on the descendants of William Pratt, their earliest American ancestor. "Orson began to weep 'like a little child' as he glimpsed this

4 treasure trove of family history. His heart melted, and he determined to repair the breach with his brother. Orson wrote to his brother, begging for his forgiveness. TEACHER NOTE: "Despite their unshakeable testimonies, their love for their ancestors was the catalyst to heal a rift, mend a hurt, and seek and extend forgiveness," Elder Renlund said. 300 President Nelson said that he owed much to his forbearers. All eight of his great grandparents were converts to the church in Europe. They sacrificed to come to Zion. Then he told some stories from his own family. Tell some of his story: Not all were as committed. I was not raised in a gospel home. I adore my parents for the home life they created for me and my siblings. Even as a boy, I knew I was missing something. One day I jumped on a street car and went to an LDS bookstore to find out about the church. I love the gospel. I wanted my parents to live the Word of Wisdom. One day I smashed o the concrete floor every bottle of liquor. I expected my father to punish me but he never aid a word. As I matured an understand Heavenly Father s plan, I often said to myself, I don t want one more Christmas present, but to be sealed to my parents. That longed for even did not happen until my parents were pasts 80 and then it did happen. I can t express that joy of that day. 400 Elder Cooke told the story of the events after the dedication of the Kirtland temple. On Easter Sunday, the Lord appeared and accepted his temple, April 3, years ago from this Easter Sunday. It was also Passover. Who did he say appeared and what keys did they restore? Moses - keys of gathering of Israel from four parts of the earth Elias keys of dispensation of gospel of Abraham, restoration of Abrahamic covenant, prepare members for the kingdom of God. Elijah keys of the sealing power and family history work and temple ordinances. Salvation for living and the dead. 500 Several general authorities spoke on the life of President Nelson. What is one thing that he is well known for? Pres. Nelson was a heart surgeon and pioneer of the heart lung machine. He was part of the team that performed first open heart surgery in He also performed a heart operation on President Spencer W Kimball. He has learned to speak Mandarin and has performed heart operations in China. He had 10 children. He still ski s.

5 DOUBLE JEOPARDY FUNNY THING! 200 Elder Taylor said recently he went to my old rock church with my mother. He saw the Primary singing I am a child of God. What did he say about his childhood that got a laugh? Some said of me, Is he really a child of God and who sent him here? 400 Elder De Feo told the story of when he was a young father, his five year old son was asked What work does your father do? One friend said his father was the Chief of Police. When his son was asked, he said that his father works in an office on a computer. Noticing his answer did not impress his friends, what did he say that got a laugh? By the way, my father is the chief of the universe. End of the conversation. TEACHER S NOTE: Elder De Feo said It was time to teach him more details about the plan of salvation and who is really in charge. 600 Elder Robbins asked the questions: How long is Christ s long suffering? How often will he forgive us? The Lord used math as a metaphor of his infinite atonement, boundless love and limitless grace. What is the math he was talking about that got a laugh? Peter answered the question of how many times should we forgive and said seven times. The Lord said 70 x 7. He was not establishing a number of 490. Our repentance card does not expire on 491. There are no limits to forgiveness. 800 Elder Wakolo said Elder Andersen was once asked if he gets nervous speaking in front of 21,000 people. What was the answer that got a laugh? Elder Andersen said it wasn t the 21,000 people that make you nervous but the 15 men sitting behind you Elder Holland spoke about this conference having a rush of revelation. He wondered how many more rushes we can handle this weekend. What did he say then that got a laugh? Some of us have weak hearts but President Nelson can take care of that too! What a prophet! WHAT SHOULD WE DO? 200 Pres. Eyring gave us counsel on how to have guidance from the Holy Ghost. He used the example of the Prophet Joseph Smith. What should we do to follow his example? The first choice he made was to be humble before God. The second was to pray with faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The third was to obey exactly. Obedience may mean to move quickly. It may mean to prepare. Or it may mean to wait in patience for further inspiration. And the fourth is to pray to know the needs and the hearts of others and how to help them for the Lord. 400 Sister Oscarson, just released as the YW General President said that Our young women are amazing. They have talents, unlimited enthusiasm and energy, and they are compassionate and caring. They want to be of service. They need to know they are valued and essential in the work of salvation. Every young woman in the

6 Church should feel valued, have opportunities to serve and feel that she has something of worth to contribute to this work. She then listed several areas where YW can serve in their wards. Name one: Member missionary work, Convert retention, Activation, Temple and family history work, visiting the elderly, helping a new family move in. 600 Pres Ballard said that a solemn assembly is a practice traced back to the Bible. He said we live in a time when this practice has been restored through Joseph Smith. What did he then tell us to do? I want you to record in your personal journal what you felt on this occasion as you took part. 800 Elder Zivic counseled us on how to endure to the end. He listed five things we should do to resist temptations and endure to the end. Name them: 1. Daily, pray and read scriptures. 2. Weekly, partake of the sacrament with a broken heart and a contrite spirit. 3. Pay our tithing and monthly fast offerings. 4. Every two years every year for youth renew our temple recommends. 5. Throughout our whole lives, serve in the work of the Lord Elder Taylor spoke on the importance of knowing you are a child of God. He said one way to help us know that is to read and study the Book of Mormon and see how He is merciful and gracious and that all are alike unto him. He admonished us that when we feel hurt, sad, or abandoned, to open the Book of Mormon and we will come to know that God will never desert us. He bore his testimony that he loves the God of our Fathers, the Lord, God Almighty. He then quoted Alma 22:18 as part of his testimony. Find and read that scripture. LISTS GIVEN 200 President Oaks did the sustaining of new General Authority 70s. area authority 70s, and the reorganization of the Young Women. At the end, he said there were now how many general authorities? 116 general authorities, nearly 40% born outside the US. (or tell them if they can t answer and ask the following) Can you name what countries some of them are from? 400 Elder Renlund spoke on our sacred duty for family history as sealing families together but promised that as we participate, we lay claim to healing blessings promised by prophets and apostles. They are amazing in scope. He then listed several promises available to us as we do temple work for our deceased family. Name one promised blessing: Increased understand of the Savior and his sacrifice. Increased influence of the Holy Ghost Increased faith and deeper conversion Increased motivation to repent Increased refining sanctifying in our hearts. Increased joy to feel the love Increased family blessings. Increased love and appreciation for ancestors and living relatives. Increased power to discern that which needs healing. Increased protection from temptations Increased assistance to mend troubled, broken and anxious hearts.

7 600 Elder Robbins spoke of the failures we have in life are really stepping stones to success. He spoke of Nephi and Moses, who were on the Lord s errand, still had to struggle in their missions. He then gave us four reasons on why the Lord allows them and us to flounder and fail in our attempts to succeed. Name one reason: 1. The Lord knows these will give us experience. 2. We taste the bitter to praise the good. 3. The battle is the Lords and we cannot win without his help. 4. It helps us develop and learn Christ-like attributes learned in affliction. 800 Brother Durrant from the Sunday School spoke on the responsibility to teach our children in the home. He said parents are never released from these callings. Name one of the five things he said all parents should use to help teach the gospel. 1. Family home evening. 2. Family Prayer pray for children by name. 3. Use teaching moments with our children as they come (folding clothes or in the car). 4. Family scripture study. 5. Example Elder Wilson shared three important guidelines to receive the spirit s guidance Share one: 1. We must properly tune our receiver to heaven s frequency. 2. Don t just ask the Lord to solve the problem, but ask what we can do to be part of the solution. 3. Be familiar with listening to the Holy Spirit. BOOK OF MORMON SCRIPTURES 200 Elder Godoy said that the personal sacrifice that we make we will feel peace and the joy mentioned in 2 Nephi 2:25. Find and read that scripture. Adam fell that men might be and men are that they might have joy. 400 Elder De Feo quoted Moroni 7:48 in his talk about pure love Find and read that scripture. 600 Sister Aburto told us about Monarch butterflies who are master navigators. They travel 1000s of miles and return to same forest in Mexico and do this year after year. During their journey, cluster together at night to protect themselves. A cluster of butterflies are kaleidoscope. Each butterfly is different but they work to

8 earth to make the world a beautiful place. We are on our way back to our heavenly home. If we knit our hearts together in unity, the Lord will protect us. Find and read: Mosiah 18:21 that speaks of hearts knit together 800 Elder Wilson spoke on using the Spirit as our guide in life. He quoted Alma 37:37 as part of his counsel. Find and read that scripture Elder Robbins spoke on the importance of growing from failure to failure in life without a loss of enthusiasm. He then quoted 2 Nephi 31:20 on hope. Find and read that verse. FINAL JEOPARDY: Pres. Nelson was sustained as our prophet.
