1 T H I R D Q U A R T E R F O R T H E V A L L E Y O F Letter From Your Chairman ed.kirk@dallasscottishrite.org A MASON AND A MAN Author Unknown The Scottish Rite Bicycle Brigade Committee is off and running. Read the scorecard on page 4. We have a goal of 25 bicycles for Dallas bicycle patrolmen and are taking orders from other police departments in our Valley. We encourage other lodges as well as other groups and individuals to assist us in supporting law Presented at the May Stated Meeting was a sample bicycle along with Bro. Jimmy Heisz, 32 o KCCH elect, sam P Cochran Lodge; Bro. Royce Reynolds, 32 o, Trinity Valley Lodge; Hon. Craig Sutton, 32 o KCCH, Knox-Corinthian Lodge; R.W. Fred Allen, 33 o ; and Ill. M. Douglas Adkins, enforcement. Scott Transou, 32 KCCH elect, a Dallas patrolman, heads up this committee. We would be pleased to donate bicycles to other city police departments if their local lodges or donors wish to participate in the program. On June 11th, we had a wonderful Stated Meeting at the Sharon Shrine in Tyler. It was well attended by Tyler area members as well as members from the Dallas area; it will become an annual event for our Valley. Thanks to Bros. Larry Blanchard, 33, Ben Brown, 32, Pete Peters 33 and Gene Conley, 33 elect, for their tireless efforts in making the meeting so successful. The rain held back and 160 shooters with 50 volunteers participated in the Frost Bank Sporting Clay Shoot held at the Elm Fork Shooting Range on Saturday, June 23rd. Elm Fork kept the shooting positions on dry land even though surrounding waters rose eight inches during the event! Thank you Frost Bank and Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for sponsoring this event which helps our building fund at the Scottish Rite Cathedral. The event continues to grow by leaps and bounds each year. May I encourage you to purchase the Scottish Rite mailing labels that you have been solicited by mail. Its purpose is to help your Valley and Deputy to defer expenses that I incur in traveling the Orient and preparing materials to be sent to the Valleys in Texas. Congratulations to our new 2007 honors recipients; they are listed on page 3. We greatly appreciate your devotion and support for our fraternity. Please thank them for their contributions to masonry and our Valley. Looking at our past reunion, it is especially inspiring to see the number of young masons joining our Valley. Remember, they will have a yellow card in their coat pocket at our meetings. Be a part of the renaissance we are experiencing and attend our next Stated Meeting on Monday, July 16th at 6:30 for dinner. Fraternally: M. Douglas Adkins Brother, Masonry means much more Than the wearing of a pin, Or carrying a paid-up dues receipt So that the Lodge will let you in. You can wear an emblem on your coat, From your finger flash a ring, But if you are not sincere at heart This doesn t mean a thing. It is merely an outward sign To show the world that you belong To that great fraternal brotherhood That teaches right from wrong. What really counts lies buried deep Within the human breast, Til Masonic teaching brings it out And puts it to the test. If you practice out of Lodge The things you learn within, Be just and upright to yourself And to your fellow men. Console a brother when he s sick, Assist him when in need, Without a thought of personal reward For any act or deed. Walk and act in such a way The world without will see, That only the best can meet the test Laid down by Masonry. Be always faithful to your trust And do the best you can, Then you can proudly tell the world You re a Mason and a man.

2 Where has this year gone? It is hard to believe that we are half way through the year and still have a large number of members who have not paid their 2007 dues. Brethren, dues are the lifeblood of our fraternity. It costs less than $9.00 per month to belong to Dallas Scottish Rite. Please pay your dues, Ed Kirkpatrick there have been two reminders sent out since the initial mailing. Dallas Scottish Rite does not want to lose any members simply because of financial difficulties. So let us know if there is a problem. This has been a busy spring with the annual Scholarship Awards Banquet, the Dinner honoring our new Grand Junior Warden, Orville O Neill, 33 o IGH, a special stated meeting held at Sharon Shrine in Tyler and the usual Stated Meetings. Information on these events is available on the web site, www. dallasscottishrite.org under the newsletter tab which has the May and June updates to this newsletter. The evening Stated Meetings are being well received. Attendance is up and we are seeing more of our younger members. This is both good and bad since some of our long time members are unable to make it during the evening hours. We are in the process of setting up a transportation committee that will work on making sure that these members have a way to attend the night meetings. If you know of a member who lives close to you, call him and offer to bring him to the meeting. July 28 is the date for our Summer One Day Reunion. Let s all work on getting candidates for this reunion. The Spring Reunion consisted of eighty-two new members and two courtesy candidates from the Austin Valley. We need to make the Summer Reunion just as successful as the Spring. The Fall Reunion will come earlier than usual this year. The first day will be September 8, day two is on September 22 and the third day is September 29. I am confident that this will set a record for the past several years. If each of us will get one new member, we can double our membership in one year. UPDATE YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION Due to the increased costs of mailing and the continued problems communicating with our members, we are asking every member to update his personal information. This can be done either on line through the web site: or by filling out the data sheet below and mailing it to Dallas Scottish Rite, 500 South Harwood St., Dallas, Texas To make the update on line, go to Click on Update your information in the upper left hand corner of the Main Page Insert your last name, first name, Valley (Dallas from the drop down menu) Your Birthdate (mm/dd/yyyy) (ie: 01/01/1945) This will take you to a screen with your present data on it. Make any changes being sure that all the data is correct then click on SUBMIT. That is all there is to it. IF YOU DON T USE A COMPUTER, FILL OUT THE FOLLOWING AND MAIL TO THE CATHEDRAL. 5 THE EXTRA PARTS COMMITTEE NEEDS YOUR HELP!!! The Extra Parts Committee is in need of volunteers to assist the degree teams in communicating their degrees. The committee supplies volunteers for minor parts during the degree performances. The parts usually involve non-speaking, sitting and/or standing parts. This is a great opportunity to see the degrees from the performance side and witness the splendor and beauty first hand. Without the volunteers of the Extra Parts Committee, the candidates will not be able to experience the degrees the way they were intended to be viewed. PRIOR EXPERIENCE / PROFICIENCY IS NOT REQUIRED. The Extra Parts Committee meets in the Green Room on the third floor every day of each Reunion. If you want to be a part of something special or are looking for a way to try out the degrees, this is an excellent opportunity for you. 11 More Than 330 Area Children Join Together to Raise $182,000 for Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (DALLAS June 14, 2007) Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) proudly announces that the fifth annual KidSwing Golf Tournament raised $182,000 for the hospital. Fifteen-year-old Ben Sater of Plano, former TSRHC patient and founder of KidSwing, and more than 330 children participated in the nine-hole, best-ball scramble on Monday, June 11, at Brookhaven Country Club. Proceeds from the event will support TSRHC and the thousands of patients it treats each year. This year, most children brought in much more than the $100 participants are asked to raise in lieu of an entry fee, including 17-year-old former TSRHC patient and Kid- Swing participant Claire Straty. Through writing personal letters to family friends, she raised more than $28,000 for the hospital. KidSwing is a beautiful event, and we are proud to celebrate the fifth anniversary this year, said J. C. Montgomery, Jr., president of TSRHC. KidSwing has gained tremendous momentum and growth, not only with the number of players at 335 this year, but also in the growth and maturity of some of the key founding children. This event is so special because it s all about kids helping kids and that s the purest form of charity. When former Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children (TSRHC) patient Ben Sater discovered that TSRHC does not charge patient families for care, he decided to use his love for golf to give back to the hospital by starting this special tournament for children. Since its founding in 2003, the tournament has raised almost $500,000 for TSRHC. The honorary chair of the 2007 KidSwing Golf Tournament was Richard Eiseman, Jr. KidSwing founder Ben Sater, KidSwing Kids Committee Chair Claire Straty, TSRHC patient Charlsie Doan, age 6 of Dallas, and other young members of the Kids Committee emceed the awards program following the dinner. For more information about KidSwing, please visit Back Row L-R: Former TSRH Patient Ben Sater; J.C...
