Set up the rm fr cmfrt, cnversatin, and a variety f activities. If using a cmputer and prjectr, set up t ne side f the Fcal Wall. Arrange chairs in a semi-circle facing the fcal wall. Leave an pen space in the center fr mvement. Display the VBS Scripture pster (Item 2) and Sessin Psters (Items 3, 4, 6, 8, 10) frm the Starter Kit n fcal wall. Place a large dry-erase bard, chalkbard, r tear sheets t ne side f the fcal wall. Cver a table with a VBS 2018 Tableclth and display the curriculum alngside tabletp decratins such as pm-pms, megaphnes, and small sprts balls. Drape VBS 2018 String Flags frm the ceiling and acrss the drway. Teaching Steps 1. Get Yur Head in the Game (Warm Up and Welcme) (10 minutes) Play music frm the suggested sngs n Game On! Playlist (DVD-ROM) as cnferees enter. Play ne f the Cuntdwn Timers (DVD-ROM) 3 minutes befre the sessin begins. Welcme attendees t Game On! Student VBS. Direct cnferees t get int grups accrding t their favrite sprts. Attendees shuld call ut the name f their favrite sprt, and frm a grup with thers calling ut the same sprt. If smene des nt have a favrite, encurage him r her t pick ne. Play upbeat music while attendees frm grups. (Allw 1-2 minutes t frm grups.) Nte that the nature f sprts makes a great analgy fr the pressure we all feel t perfrm well and excel in every area f life. While in grups, invite attendees t identify the ways their favrite sprts invlve pressure situatins. What abut life in general? What pressure situatins d we face? (Allw 2-3 minutes fr discussin in grups.) Explain: N matter what sprt yu play, everyne wants t be a winner. Smetimes ur desire t win is based n making a name fr urselves. Overview the fllwing highlights f the schedule ptins: The 2-hur schedule includes Wrship (30 minutes), Bible Study (60 minutes), Recreatin and Snack (30 minutes). The 3-hur schedule includes the sessins abve, as well as Missins (30 minutes) and Crafts (30 minutes). Any f the rtatins may be adjusted by nly including a prtin f the cntent t meet the scheduling needs f individual grups. Be careful t prtect the Bible study time. Encurage attendees t check with their VBS directr t knw the schedule and what materials will be prvided. Walk cnferees thrugh the typical sessin layut f the leader guide. Briefly discuss the purpse and general structure f each segment as well as the recmmended time alltment fr each element. Mentin that enlisting and training wrkers is key t success in Student VBS. Discuss the fllwing tips fr enlisting and training: Pray. Ask Gd t supply the help yu will need. Start early. D nt wait until the last minute t recruit. Plan fr sme peple t say n. Give peple time t think and pray befre making a decisin. Equip and empwer thers t lead. Allw peple t use their wn giftedness t accmplish yur visin. Seek t build a team. Cnsider thse wh are nt necessarily serving anywhere. Avid micrmanaging every detail. Cnsider using lder students t prvide leadership in missins, recreatin, crafts, and/r decrating. Enlist a few adult Bible study teachers t cmmit t ne r tw nights f teaching the Bible cntent. This way, students get t hear frm several rle mdels and it may make it easier fr adults t cmmit. Agreeing t ne r tw sessins is ften easier than cmmitting t every sessin. Invite attendees t share ther enlistment ideas that have wrked well in their setting. 3
4 Lead the grup t identify cmmn challenges t enlisting adults t serve in student VBS. Ask: Hw can we vercme thse challenges? Walk thrugh sme f the basics f planning fr Student VBS. Mentin the ways the curriculum helps with the basic tasks f rganizatin and preparatin. The first step in rganizing and preparing fr the daily sessins is t study the Bible cntent. Page 4 f the leader guide lists the Scripture references fr each day. Nte page numbers fr leader devtins. Challenge leaders t spend time meditating n and studying the VBS passages befre diving int the rest f the cntent. The secnd step is prmting Student VBS s that students will actually cme. Mentin that VBS 2018 Supersized Pstcards are a great resurce fr sending a handwritten nte t invite students. Explain that enlisting student leaders in VBS builds a cmmitment t attend. Ask attendees: What prmtinal ideas have been successful fr yur grup? Knw/plan the schedule. When deciding n a schedule fr Student VBS: Priritize Bible teaching time and allw time fr wrship. Include Missins, Recreatin/Snack, Crafts as time allws and accrding t the make-up f yur student grup. Adjust the time needed fr any f the rtatins by eliminating part f the material planned. The leader guide is a resurce full f fun and meaningful activities, but chse what will wrk best fr yur grup and yur schedule. Use the curriculum. There is n need t re-invent the wheel! Familiarize yurself with the materials n the DVD-ROM. The Missins segments are fantastic! Gather and print materials in advance. Label file flders r bags Day 1 5. Srt materials int the apprpriate flder r bag as they are cllected. Label plastic ziplck bags t stre lse items. Make supply lists in clumns (things t buy, things I have, things t ask thers fr). Make the space fun! Enjy the theme, but nt at the expense f preparing t teach r at the expense f yur budget! Enlist vlunteers with a flair fr the creative. Invite cnferees t share additinal tips fr rganizing, preparing, r decrating that have wrked well fr them. 3. The Big Game (Bible Study Cntent) Sessin 1 Jesus Cares abut Me (10 minutes) Luke 15:1-7 Intrduce the clip, Banged Up a Little frm the mvie Seabiscuit. Explain that a new racehrse wner, Charles Hward, is lking fr a trainer. He hears abut a hrse trainer wh is a bit unusual and heads ut t find him camping in the wds. Watch the clip (1:40). Cmment: When the hrse trainer says, Yu dn t thrw a whle life away just because he s banged up a little, it resnates with Charles. In fact, Charles is an advcate fr underdgs in general. His small hrse has a limp, his jckey is t big and angry, and his trainer is washed up. But Charles sees the value in each f them that thers dn t. Write the line frm the mvie, Yu dn t thrw a whle life away just because he/she is n the dry-erase bard r large sheet f paper. Invite attendees t fill in the blank. Write dwn answers as they are named. Ask attendees t cnsider if they have ever been the ne wh feels lst r thrwn away. Explain that n matter whether a persn is banged up, missing, injured, r fuled ut, it is all the same as far as Jesus is cncerned. He will nt finish the game with nly part f the team. Jesus cares abut everyne, and pursues thse wh are lst and in need f a Savir. Discuss ways teens identify with the feeling f being banged up. Ask: Hw might yur students perspective n this discussin be different frm yurs? Hw might it be the same? 4
5 Explain that this activity leads int a study f the Parable f the Lst Sheep. Students will discver that Jesus cares fr and pursues a relatinship with all, that Jesus is a patient teacher, that Jesus never stps pursuing thse wh are lst, and that Jesus rejices when we repent. Sessin 2 Jesus Gives Me Hpe (15 minutes)-jhn 11:1-44 Place 3 4 tear sheets arund the rm. Direct attendees t frm grups f 2 r 3 and ask them t answer these questins (allw 2 3 minutes t discuss): Are yu a cmpetitive persn? D yu handle lsing well r nt? When yu played games with yur parents while yu were grwing up, did they let yu win? Pint ut t the grup that lsing and waiting ften feel like tw sides f the same cin. Especially in tday s culture, any type f wait ften feels like falling behind in the game. Ask: What are sme things in life yu dn t want t wait fr? What are sme things yu are OK waiting fr? Write answers n a tear sheet r dry-erase bard. Cntinue: When put in thse situatins, des it ever cause yu t lse hpe? Why r why nt? What gd can cme frm waiting? Nte that Sessin 2 s Bible stry is abut sme f Jesus clsest friends, wh likely felt the same way. They were waiting n Jesus t cme thrugh, and as the days passed, it felt like they had lst. Enlist 5 vlunteers t participate in the Reader s Theater (DVD-ROM item). Give each a cpy f the script. Direct them t read Jhn 11:1-16 accrding t the script. The rest f the grup may fllw alng in their Bibles. Draw a vertical line dwn the center f a tear sheet t create tw clumns. Print Hpeless at the tp f ne clumn and Hpeful at the tp f the ther clumn. Distribute the Hpeless r Hpeful Strips (DVD-ROM item) fr verses Explain that attendees will have tw minutes t read the verse n the strip, decide which heading it fits, and then tape it in the clumn. Briefly discuss the respnses and hw Jesus gave hpe t thse wh felt they were in a hpeless situatin. Ask: Are yu typically hpeful r hpeless in difficult circumstances? What srts f difficult circumstances d teens face tday? In what ways d they prcess/handle difficulties differently frm adults? Mentin that this activity is the first part f the study f the Sessin 2 passage, the resurrectin f Lazarus. Students will discver that if they believe, they will see the glry f Gd in their circumstances, that Jesus des nt always act accrding t ur timetables, that Jesus is the resurrectin and the life, and that everyne wh believes in Jesus will live frever. Sessin 3 Jesus Helps Me Believe (10 minutes)- Jhn 20:19-31 Ask: What are things yu will never believe unless yu see them fr yurself? Write respnses n the dry-erase bard r a tear sheet. Read r summarize Jhn 20: Ask: What d yu d when yu struggle with yur faith? Hw des Thmas stry infrm yu abut what t d when yu face dubts f yur wn? Explain that dubt is nt the cmplete absence f faith. It is faith that struggles with the temptatin f unbelief, and is smething every believer deals with t sme extent. S, when we talk abut dubt as believers, we must understand that Gd can handle ur questins, but His desire is that we grw t a place where we find full cnfidence in Him. Distribute the DVD-ROM items Respnse Cards and Sharing the Gspel with Students. Direct cnferees back t their small grups. Allw 2 3 minutes t discuss: Hw can this discussin and this passage lead int a presentatin f the gspel? Ask grups t share 1 r 2 insights frm their discussins. Explain that in Sessin 3, students will discver that the life and presence f the resurrected Jesus gives us peace, that Jesus sends us int the wrld in the pwer f the Hly Spirit t share the gspel f peace, that Jesus lves us and helps us believe withut seeing, and that when we believe withut seeing, we have life in His name. 5
6 Sessin 4 Jesus Lves Me (15 minutes)- Jhn 13:1-35; 19:25-27; 20:1-10; 21:1-14 Lead attendees t name any team-building activities they have participated in, whether as part f a team, rganizatin, r yuth grup. Ask: What are such activities intended t teach? Lead cnferees thrugh the fllwing team-building activity. Blindfld 4 6 vlunteers and place a rpe n the grund next t them. Tell them t make a rectangle like a ftball field using the full length f the rpe lying n the grund next t them. Give them n further instructins. Watch and see wh takes charge, hw the grup rganizes the crners, if ne persn facilitates frm the middle, and s frth. Pint ut that games like this teach us t wrk tgether, but they fall shrt in teaching us t lve. Direct a vlunteer t read Jhn 19: Pint ut that Jesus cntinued t shw lve even when He was n the crss. Ask: What d yu think Jesus was trying t accmplish by telling Jhn and Mary they were t cnsider each ther mther and sn? Hw culd Jhn have respnded? Why d we, knwing hw we shuld lve ther peple, smetimes neglect t d the very things we knw we have been called t d? Allw 2 4 minutes t discuss the fllwing in their small grups: Hw is yur grup ding at lving like Jesus lved? Hw can yu d better? If time allws, ask grups each t share ne way t imprve. Mentin that in Sessin 4, students will learn that Jesus invites us int a clse-knit, leaning-n type f relatinship with Him, that Jesus wants us t lve ther peple the way He lves us, and that Jesus will cntinue t reveal His lve fr us nw and thrughut eternity. Sessin 5 Jesus Gives Me Jy (15 minutes)- Acts 16:23-34 Lead the grup t guess the crrect answer t sme sprts trivia: A sccer field is called a pitch, because A. Sccer was created in England, and pitch is the British versin f field. B. The first sccer games were played n farming land and pitchfrks were used t remve all the hay. C. The sund f vuvuzelas being blwn by spectatrs is heard at a tne several ctaves lwer n the field than in the stands. D. Initially, galies std n a mund t return the ball int the field f play. Reveal the crrect answer (A). Share the fllwing activity frm pages f the learner guide (r as an alternative, shw the shrt film TMB Panyee FC. [5:15]). Explain that children living in the fishing village f Kh Panyee lved the sprt f sccer, but culd nly watch it n TV. Kh Panyee is a small flating village in Thailand, built n stilts by Indnesian fishermen. The entire village is surrunded by water, and there is n sil r dry land t be fund. That is, until 1986, when a grup f innvative and determined kids built a flating sccer field (pitch) frm scrap wd and ld fishing rafts. The bys frmed a team and practiced n their wd plank-flating field, and eventually entered a turnament n the mainland. The village pitched in t buy the team unifrms, and many traveled by bat t watch the bys play. They were better than they thught! The Panyee Ftball Club gt 3 rd place in that very first turnament. After that, the sprt became the favrite pastime n the island, and the Panyee FC has caught the attentin f sccer fans arund the wrld. Say: Everyne s field f play in life is different. The children f Kh Panyee made the mst f theirs. What circumstances d yu have that yu must vercme as yu play the game f life? Ask: D yu ever feel like yu are stuck in a certain psitin with n way ut? Cmment that in Acts 16:23-25, Paul and Silas were mistreated, abused, and arrested. They were in the inner prisn and were physically restrained. 6

If yu and yur best Christian friend were in Paul and Silas s situatin, what wuld yur cnversatin be like? If this happened tday, what sng d yu think they wuld sing? What sng wuld yu sing? Invite grups t share ne thing they discussed, if time allws. Recall that the prisn drs pened, but Paul and Silas did nt leave the prisn. Why nt? Paul and Silas did nt escape prisn, but they still wn. Cmment: S d we when we chse t live accrding t the jy f the Lrd in us rather than lking fr jy in ur temprary circumstances. Ask: In what ways des this passage specifically speak t the students in yur grup? Mentin that in Sessin 5, students will learn that thse wh live as messengers f the gspel f Jesus will face difficult trials in life, that Jesus gives us jy, even in the wrst pssible circumstances, that Gd uses the jy f believers t encurage belief and jy in thers, and that Gd s eternal purpses are bigger than any earthly circumstances. 4. Pst-Game Cmmentary (Cntinued Cnnectins) (15 minutes) Pint ut the evangelistic and cnnectin activities available in the materials. Discuss ways t equip leaders t share the gspel with students. Talk abut fllw-up strategies after Student VBS. Mentin that fllw-up is the respnsibility fr every VBS wrker. Cast a visin fr why fllw-up is imprtant. Discuss ideas, strategies, and tls fr fllw-up. Invite cnferees t give input based n their previus successes. 5. Clsing (5 minutes) Call attentin t the VBS Scripture Pster (kit item 2). Read alud the verse and ask: What d yu knw abut Peter frm the Bible? (Answers may include: He left the bat t walk n the water t Jesus, Matthew 14:28-29; He tk his eyes ff Jesus and started t sink, verse 30; Peter used his swrd t cut the ear ff a sldier wh had cme t arrest Jesus, Jhn 18:10; He bragged that he wuld never turn his back n Jesus, even if everyne else did, Matthew 26:33; He denied that he even knew the Lrd three times, verses ) Pint ut that Peter had bviusly learned smething between the time he did these things and the time he wrte the wrds fund in 2 Peter 1:3. Peter thught he culd fllw Jesus simply by his wn determinatin, passin, and strength. But after the resurrectin, Peter received the Hly Spirit and stpped trying t live that way. As he relied n Gd's divine pwer, he learned that he had everything he needed fr life and gdliness, even when things gt tugh. Say: Students are under s much pressure (and s are WE) t perfrm well, t be the best, t balance schedules that are full t the brim, and t excel in every area. Frm that vantage pint, life's big game can seem verwhelming. But when we step back, we realize that the gal is nt cmpeting in ur wn strength. Gd has already given us everything we need! He's given His cmplete Wrd as the ultimate playbk. He's given us Himself, which gives us a reasn t celebrate. He wants us t jin His team, t train hard, t celebrate ur salvatin, t encurage ne anther, and spur each ther n. S, what are yu waiting fr? It's Game On! Clse in prayer. Encurage attendees t pray fr ne anther and upcming VBS events. 7
