Parkhurst Fund, and only a portion of the property has yet been sold, it has not been placed with the ordinary Resources of the town this year. Respectfully submitted, JOHN A. 42 Sch o o l Report. To the Inhabitants of the Town of Gorham : Your committee in making their annual report, are happy to say that in their judgment, the schools of Gorham have been in a prosperous condition during the past year. The teachers employed have generally been well qualified for their work and faithful in its performance. The schools have been well attended, the pupils orderly and interested in, and attentive to their work, and good progress has been made in the studies pursued. In District No. 1, the High School, under the wise and capable management of Mr. Woodman, who has continued to hold his high place in the hearts of the scholars and in the confidence and esteem of pupils and parents, aided by his very efficient and successful assistant, Miss Alden, has maintained its high character as nn educational institution and is a credit to the town. Though the graduating class of 591 was a small one. including only three members, Alice Brown, Joseph Shaw and Fred D. S. Floyd, these, by their manifest attainments, showed that the school affords most excellent advantages to those who may avail themselves of them. Agreeable to a recent act of the State Legislature, referred to in our last year's report An act to give additional power to School District No. 1, of the Town of Gorham, at a special meeting of the voters of this District, it was voted to transfer the scholars of the Grammar Grade to the Model schools connected with the Normal School, and combine all Primary grades in the District school building. Said primary grades to be under the management of the authorities of the Normal School, together with the District Agent and School Committee of the town and Grading Committee of the District." o This was done, and is evidently a great benefit to both the Grammar and Primary departments of the school, securing a better and more complete classification of the scholars, and

43 42 thus a fuller and more efficient course of instruction. The pupils of the Grammar grade have the care and instructions of the thoroughly trained, able and successful teachers of the Normal School, while in the Primary department, Miss Cloudman, who commenced her work here last Fall, has shown herself to be a capable, painstaking and skillful teacher of children. District No. 18, (Great Falls), seems to us to be worthy of special mention, in view of the remarkably good attendance of the scholars. Mr. Hanscom, the teacher of the Fall and Winter terms, says that but for the prevailing sickness the attendance would have been almost or quite perfect. Both teachers and scholars have been very much interested in their work, and marked improvement has been made in the studies pursued. Also during the Spring and Summer terms, under the instruction of Miss Hawkes, this school not only showed much interest in the studies pursued, but with a commendable spirit of patriotism united thereto, secured a nice national flag for the District. The school at Little Falls, District No. 16, has also been very prosperous. The scholars have bought for the use of the school an Encyclopedia, and in various ways have manifested a very commendable interest. The work of supplying the schools of the town with free text books has been much advanced during the year, though the supply is not yet equal to the demand ; on which account it has been necessary to frequently transfer books from one Dis* trict to another, involving upon the committee much extra work, and often causing much inconvenience and loss, as scholars were obliged to wait in their work while such changes were made. Your committee therefore in concluding this report would recommend for the coming year the following appropriations : For text books, three hundred dollars, for common schools, three thousand, five hundred dollars, and for High Schools, one thousand dollars. The usual tables of statistics are appended to this report. Respectfully submitted, H. C. PALMER, GEO. R. SPINNEY, HOWARD A. McKENNY. G orham, Feb. 20, 1892.
