4 The Master s Corner Brethren: Freemasonry is the world's oldest, largest and most widely known fraternal organization. It is a voluntary organization, comprised of men of good character and reputation who all believe in a Supreme Being, Universal brotherhood and loyalty to their country. Freemason`s purpose is to help build a better world by teaching and promoting the brotherhood of man under the fatherhood of God. Among its tenants is friendship, morality, patriotism, tolerance, relief of the distressed, the golden rule and charity towards all. Masonic buildings such as our own are familiar sights in most cities and towns. Contrary to popular beliefs Freemasonry is not a secret society. It does not hide its existence or its membership. Its only secrets are certain modes of recognition and ceremonies based on Masonic traditions and ancient usages that our ancient brethren used when we were operative stone Masons. Freemasonry welcomes men of many faiths. Although religious in character, Freemasonry is not a religion. It neither claims to take the place of the church, nor attempts to influence the religious beliefs of the members. The Freemason is taught to be a good and contributing citizen and to obey the laws of the land. Freemasonry takes no part in partisan politics. Although discussions of political matters are forbidden in its assemblies, hundreds, even thousands of freemasons have served their communities as leaders in government, business and the professions. Sixteen presidents of the U.S.A. including George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Gerald Ford have been active Freemasons. Freemasonry does not solicit new members. A man must seek admission of his own free will and accord. He must be at least the age of 18, mentally competent, of moral character and believe in the existence of a Supreme Being. He must obtain a petition from a Masonic friend or acquaintance, be recommended by at least two Master Masons, be investigated by a committee of inquire, and pass a unanimous ballot in the lodge in which he makes application. He is only then eligible to receive the degrees of symbolic Masonry. I sincerely hope that you would consider visiting York Lodge # 22 and that you learn more about Freemasonry and how Masons meet and part, especially during our 200th year celebrations in West Kennebunk. We hope that you will find our lodge hall to be welcoming and warm. Come see for yourself the contributions of our members to the community and the nation. You will be impressed and see that we are deserving of the Honor of being Ancient Free & Accepted Master Masons. Sincerely and Fraternally Wor Thomas Dudevoir Reminder: If you do not have your 2013 dues card you are in arrears Reminder: Dues for 2013 are overdue!!
