Hank Oyasato suggesting a working program with the Reserves and the Club 100 to perpetuate the names of the 1 DOth and the 442nd. The cover - a line of infantrymen scanning the front line preparatory to their next move; always looking forward, never backward, never static - is also a lead to our editorial. James Miyano's Board report indicates an average of 52 paid up members over that of the preceding year. The income and expense statement also notes this increase - to 567 paid up members for The statement also notes, thru November, of a net profit of a little over $4 thousand ($23, income vs $19, expenses). The 1963 annual convention is headed for Kauai if that group on Kauai can swing it, with financial support from the parent club. Satoru Nakamura weighs in from Los Angeles with a note that there are approximately 57 Bakerites living in the Southern California area. And Dick Oguro weighs in for the local Bakerites who always seem to be on some kindof a party binge. And nothing like the good old game of jankenpo (paper and stone) to liven up a party. And here's a personal invitation for a party from Ronald Higashi, new proxy of Charlie chapter. Ronald says that the regular Charlie chapter meeting for January will include dinner - on Ronald. Can't beat this for an invite for the first meeting of the year. 6 tures were from Stu'S album. Thanks, Stu. Herb Yamamoto says the installation ceremony will be either in late January or early February. Understand that there is a bit of a problem due to declinations. Congratulations to the officers of tlie 442nd Veterans Club for 1963: Takao Hedani, president; Herbert Isonaga, 1 st VP; Sam Sasai, 2nd VP; Isamu Kitagawa, 3rd VP; William Naganuma, Treasurer; Robert Sasaki, executary secretary. Richard Yamamoto reports in with the new officers of the Green Thumbs for A roster listing all tbe officers for the various activities is included in this issue, including Maui chapter officers as reported by Stanley Masumoto. Blue Nagasaki sends in his always fine and interesting reports on Able chapter, and that whale of a fishing club which seems to do everything but catch fish - a fishing club which eats anything else but fish. In the previous edition, we published a letter from Tom Kadota, our. Hawaii correspondent, who said sayonara to the Parade. Tom says that since he's been elected to be secretary of the Hawaii chapter, someone else should be doing the chores as correspondent. Well, Tom, we hate to twist your arm but there are a number of fellows like you serving double duty - so how about keeping up your wonderful correspondence. And to Presfdent Seitoku Akamine of the Hawaii chapter: we need someone who keeps open the lines of communication between Oahu and Hawaii. So if you can't induce anyone else to keep up the Parade chores, we're almost certain that as a last resort, Tom will still be good for the soft touch. We wind up another year of operations, and to all of you who have 80 generously contributed of your time and effort in making the Puka Puka Parade what it is, many thanks. The editor will appreciate any suggestions or recommendations for improvements to your paper, for we like to keep up with progress and the times, too. And to the publisher, Screen Process Hawaii, many thanks for a wonderful job, and especial thanks for being so forebearing with our deadlines. And finally, to the important people who make this publication possible - our advertisers - Mahalo for your wonderful support throughout last year. And may we count on you in 1963 also. 8 Baker Los Angeles At their last meeting held November 17 in Chinatown, the 18 Bakerites present elected the following to setve for 1963 and 1964: President, Chick Furuye; 1st V.P., Albert Takahashi; 2nd V.P.,JimmyNakamura; Corresponding Secretary Treasurer, Sat Nakamura; Recording Secretary, Henry Sakato; Public Relations, Gram Noriyuki; Delegates to 442nd Assn. meetings, Harry Fukasawa and Ken Yoshino; Delegates to 442nd Assn. Bldg. Committee, Henry Sakato and Lou Furushiro; Sgt. at Arms, Henry Hayashi. Two new Bakerites made their debut at our last meeting ex-coloradoan George Mizuno, who now resides at 1330 Dahlia St., Oxnard, Calif., and ex-honolulan Kazumasa Higa, of 1944 Vineyard Ave., L.A. 16. After being lost for five full years in the multitudes of L.A., Kazumasa was "discovered" by Gram Noriyuki. Credit is also given Gram for trackir.g down George Mizuno. Unofficially, there are now 57 Bakerites living in Southern California among whom are only a handful of bona fide native Angelenos. Bakerites are. adventurers and they seem to like L.A. Ableites, Charlies and Ilios are so rare. Stanley Yukio Nakamoto left us late last summer and is now living in Honolulu. No reason was given for his exit from here, but on checking the premises where he last lived, one can readily understand why. On the north, it is bound by Brooklyn Avenue and on the East, by Atlantic Blvd. Stanley just couldn't feel like a Californi,," At the last election of officers of the 442nd Veterans Assn. of So. Calif., held on December 8, Bakerite Ken Yoshino was elected Treasurer. President is Bill Davenport, an Itemite. Local Bakerites are urged to give their moral support to Ken by attending the-installation dinner-dance to be held February 23 at the Chalon Mart, downtown L.A. Note to Congressman Spark M. Matsunaga: Heartiest congratulations I May we be of service to you <j.uring your stopovers in L.A.7 Sat Nakamura Fishing Due to the adverse fishing weather conditions (high wind plus cold - high waves and dirty water) on Decembetr 8, 1962, "B' Team was able to protect their small lead of over 6 lbs. from "A" Team and officially declared winner when no one caught fish on December 8, which was the last outing 'of the year. 11 Baker SHADES OF MODERN TOKYO! At the last dinner-meeting of the B-INVESTORS HUI held at the KANRAKU TEl, on Friday,November 30, it was as though the real "dakine" Tokyo Night Life had been transplanted, in toto, to this very room that we were occupying! The food "as real ono, but - the ATMOSPHERE that pervaded as well as prevailed throughout the evening was IT! Words would be inadequate to describe it. Maybe it was because the gathering was so small. Or, perhaps it was because we had a small backroom of the TEl. But, I want to agree with the majority that, the NE-SANS, 'the gals, were the major contributing factor of this hilarious occasion - ESPECIALLY so in the game of JANKENPO (PAPER AND STONE) - played with no holds barred! Besides the members present were such great sports and cunning adversaries that these gals more than met their match! Which goes to prove that, perhaps, there are amongst us regular patrons of Honolulu's teahouses??? Eh, MT, BT, BK, MH, KM, MM, et al who attend'ed? But especially MH who without any coaxing when called upon to do battle by BT, responded with a bounce and a loud war cry, the likes that haven't been heard since the days of the Po Valley battlefields! For all this, we must thank the hard-working chairman, MIKE TOKUNAGA. That was a wonderful Job, Mike. The meeting? Oh, we postponed that to a day in December, when we would be a little more sober in our speech and judgment! * * * From heresay accounts of members who 2.ttended the last chapter meeting held on Thursday, December 13, moved up from Friday, December 14, as originally scheduled, notwithstanding this last minute change, it was very well attended - approximately 40-odd members being in attendance. Among the "new" ones were: NASH TAHARA, new transplant from Hilo, YUKIO NAKAMOTO, formerly of Kauai and California: Welcome aboard, fellas! FRED NAKAMURA was a long time no see Bakerite there at the meeting. Seems like HK was completely at a loss because PA as well as DO were conspicuously "in absentia'" and KI and HK who had come together went home so early - at 10:30 PM, dashing his desperate hopes of a NIJIKAI for the evening??? Japan must have been a little too much for KI. It's really amazing that he went straight home without even a coffee break, SICK OR WHAT, BOY! * * * Sorry to have missed the Baker chapter Christmas Party held on Sunday, December 16 at the Clubhouse - conflicting engagements. Judging from what has been lbteti up by program chairman, JAMES INAFUKU, it must have been quite a party, wh~t with a Magician's show plus super-dupper musical entertainment by Moses Sato s musical troupe! Well done, JIMMY KAWASHIMA and committee members.

SPEAKING ABOUT PERSONALITIES: JIMMY INAFUKU i. now selling LIFE INSURANOE on the side. He seem. to hate a pretty good investment to sell you. One can NEVER have enough of 11fe inauruee. ALAN TAMURA must be all smiles thest! days. He has been transferred to the Ft. Shafter Signal Corps from the Helemano Radio Station and has been at hi. new station for about a month. No more long drives, eh Alan? And so another eventful year is closing out on us fast. In reflecting back very quickly on year PREXY FRED KANEMURA and hra gang have certainly given us a bang up year of work and fun. And so to you SALUDOS for your jobs well done Messers FRED KANEMURA (President), KEN IHA (Secretary), BILLY TAKAEZU (Vice President), and KATS MAEDA (Treasurer)! And gazing into the future - into WHAT DOES IT HOLD FOR US??? Crystal-balling for just awhile, would like to see what's in store. And as I gaze into the ball, the haze becomes clear, the whole of 1963 is spread before me, and this is what I see: President-elect Y ASUTO FURUSHO having the BEST year that Baker Chapter has ever had, because his fellow officers, all first class hustlers ROBERT AOKI (Vice President), JAMES KAWASHIMA (Secretary), and HIROSHI SHIMAZU (Treasurer) are really on the ball. Immediate past prexy FRED KANEMURA, IS HEAVING deep sighs of relief and has reverted back to character - as the behind-the-scene steadying influence on the chapter. ROY NAKAYAMA has been crowned the dubious champeen of teller of tales and T_Ies of Japan. NASH T AHARA has been oestowed the honor of baking the next anniversary Luau cake. OYABUN 0 is the winner of the safest driver (civilian component) of the Shafter Motor Pool. KENGO MIY ANO is making a tanomoshi for the next trip to Japan. ALL OTHER BAKE RITES are having multiple successes in all their endeavors in this year of And as the mist once more enfolds the ball, I am back in December MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A VERY HAPPY NEW YEARI AND TO ALL MY FAITHFUL READERS AND BACKERS THROUGH THICK AND THIN, THANK YOU, ALOHA, and - this is the final bow-out. SAYONARA Dick Oguro

President's Report It has certainly been a privilege to serve you as the president of Club 100 during With the very capable assistance of the other club officers and chapter representatives, we did accomplish a few worthwhile projects that made the club members awa:r;e of the existence and purpose of our organization. We definitely have capable and talented men in Club 100. The main difficulty is to select and give them the appropriate responsibility equal to their abilities. The Editor's comment in the last issue of the Puka Puka Parade asking the board of directors to determine the reason and purfy'l'le of the club's existence will be accepted and acted on in I want to express my gratitude to all of the directors and officers who unselfishly gave many hours, attending regular and special meetings throughout 1962, and making decisions for the betterment of the club. Many of the directors accepted chairmanships of standing committees too, and carried out their responsibilities capably. I accept the office of the president for another term with reluctance and trepidation. It is a big job and a challenging one. Some of the projects initiated in 1962 need to be completed in The Japan Tour, 34th Infantry Division Memorial and Mutual Assistance projects will present reactions and problems which need careful deliberation. My fellow club officers and chapter presidents for 1963 are men who have served the club well in the past years and I consider it a great privilege to serve with some of them again. Experience is the best teacher, as many have stated before. We definitely will be doing our best at all times in resolving the many problems we will encounter in On behalf, of the Board of Directors, may I take this opportunity to wish each member of Club 100 and his family "A Happy and Prosperous New Year to All of You'" Donald Kuwaye NAKAKURA CONSTRUCTION CO., LTD. 14 EDITORIAL The Dream of Tomorrow IS Unlimited A year ago, we talked about Shichi Fukujin and commented then that the seven gods of happiness are the mainsprings of happiness we so fervently wish for in the new year - happiness, longevity, wealth, beauty, dignity, abundance, wisdom. For after all, what possibly more could one ask for? We concluded our editorial then by saying that the element of luck in the new year will continue to depend upon our actions, and reactions, to the things around us. Dreams are part of this process. So in the first dream of the new year, dream of the Takara-bune, and reach for the treasures it carries. For the better life must start with an idea, or a dream. Our dreams today are no different from those of a year ago. So we would like to repeat part of that editorial of a year ago. In Japanese mythology, the dream ofthe night of January second is the first dream of the year, and the most desirable dream is the Takara-bune, the treasure ship on which rides the seven gods of fonune, each bringing his own individual treasures. The seven gods are Hotei representing happiness, Jurojin representing longevity, Daikoku representing wealth, Benzaiten representing beauty, Bishamonten representing dignity, Ebisu representing abundance, and Fukurokujin symbolizing wisdom. The seven gods or Shichi Fukujin are depicted in varying forms. Hotei is a Buddhist priest with a fat stomach and a bald head, holding a hand screen and a large rock. Jurojin leans on a long staff and is accompanied by a stag. Daikoku, who is probably a Shinto god, holds the hammer of wealth and a big sack on his back, while he stands on two sacks of rice. Benzaiten is a goddess of Hindu origin and she rides a dragon and plays the biwa, her messenger being a snake. Bishamonten is also of Hindu origin, and this god is represented as a soldier holding a little pagoda and a lance. Ebisu is the patron of work and holds a line in his hand and a big fish on a string. And the last god, Fukurokujin, has a high skull, and is accompanied by a stork. The preceding is primarily an introduction to a continuation of last month's editorial "The Opportunity To Serve - A Reappraisal." We may appear to be pushing this theme too hard but it is our belief that the Club 100 should be on the move. The people are there; the talent only needs a little prodding. As we suggested last month, what we appear to need is a set of long range goals. The other side of the coin is that it is so much easier to take it easy and simply glide along. Anicle VII (Board of Directors) of the club's by-laws stipulates, among other things, that the Board shall "generally do every lawful act necessary or proper to carry into effect the powers, purposes and objects of the Corporation." The last time we tried, we could not find the document which laid out the purposes of the Club 100. Well, our new exec secretary has managed to dig up a copy of

tbe Petition for Charter of December 18, 1945, and the objects and purposes of the corporation as listed in the charter of incorporation are reproduced here for your information: To continue and perpetuate the identity of the looth Infantry Battalion (Separate) and its successor in combat action, the 100th Battalion of the 442nd Infantry Regiment; To preserve and uphold the high traditions of such combat units and to develop and maintain appropriate records of their heroic achievements; To encourage and assist its regular members in a steadfast endeavor (1) to promote unity among all of the people of their respective communities, (2) to advance the social welfare of all people throughout the Territory of Hawaii, (3) to participate in and support activities designed to build and strengthen patriotism and loyalty to the United States of Ameri<!a, and (4) generally to do all lawful things that reasonably may assure that the sacrifices made in combat by the regular members of this corporation and by their comrades who died on the field of battle in the cause of liberty and justice shall have not been made in vain; To promote mutual assistance among its regular members and their families; to assist its regular members and the families of their deceased comrades in obtaining rights and benefits to which they are or may become entitled under the provisions of laws now existing or hereafter to be enacted; and to extend to its regular members and the families of their deceased comrades such other assistance, material or otherwise, as in each case may be deemed necessary or appropriate to the extent it is feasible for the corporation to do so; To provide means for social relationship and recreation among its regular members and their families and friends. What we have been trying to say all along is that although the Club 100 is doing any number of things, these are mostly things for now. What about tomorrow? And this is where our Takara-bune comes into the picture. For unless we build up our dreams, then add a sense of reality to our dreams, we will be doing things only for now. The time of today is exciting enough but the dream of tomorrow is unlimited. Editor

Green Thumbs A year has gone by and the Green Thumbers have climaxed their very successful year with a beautiful Orchid Show at the clubhouse. Thanks to Mahjong Yoshimura's creative mind, the entire hall was utilized as a garden complete with a water fountain including goldfish in the pond. The beautiful garden effect was made possible with wood shavings donated by Lewers and Cooke. Many nice comments were received from the patrons. No tables were used for display of plants. Chef Robert Aoki, newcomer to the club prepared delicious beef stew and curry lunch. It was so good we wanted to sell it at 50C pe,r plate. With Edna Kobatake, Joyce Kanemura and Frances Okazaki adding the feminine touch, how could any meal go wrong. Orchids to Show chairman, Arthur Komiyama and all the members who gave their kokua to make this show and sale such a success. We had only four weeks to prepare for this event. About this time of the year, the nominating committee gets busy and the following members were elected to guide the club for 1963: President Vice Pres. Secretary Treasurer Arthur Komiyama Roy Nakayama Kazuto Shimizu Ralph Ikeda My apologies to Mr. and Mrs. Moichi Okazaki. 18 12600 Vets to Get $963,000 An estimated 12,600 Hawaii veterans will receive government insurance dividends totaling about $963 thousand in January 1963 or shortly thereafter, according to George W. Bicknell, manager of the Hawaii Veterans Administration Regional Office. The average for holders of National Service Life Insurance policies should be close to $77, including an additional special dividend for The average for those who have U.S. Government Life Insurance, first issued during World War I, should be about $60. Bicknell based his estimates on figures previously released by President Kennedy and John S. Gleason, Jr., VA Administrator in WaShington. By Presidential order, the early payment in January 1963 will cover dividends normally paid throughout the year according to policy anniversary dates. Dividends on National Service Life Insurance will total $222 million and. $15.6 million will be paid on U.S. Government Life Insurance. An additional special dividend of $90 million will be paid nationwide to holders of National Service Life In surance. This extra dividend will equal 40 per cent of a policyholder's regular 1963 dividend. Both dividends will be paid Si multaneously where possible during January. Payments will be made automatically without the need for applications. Bicknell asked veterans not to write VA insurance offices about the dividends so as not to d lay processing. Those who do not receive their dividends by March 1963, should wr:te VA. In past years, many veterans have not received their dividends on time because they failed to notify their VA insurance office of address changes. "To prevent this, all policyholders should make sure that VA is aware of their present mailing addresses," Bicknell advised. "Policyholders, including those on active duty, can obtain forms and help at VA," he added. Th National Service Life Insurance dividends will be paid only to those with poli y numbers beginning with the letter" V".

Call for Army Reserves Headquaners looth Battle Group 442nd Infantry Fort DeRussy. Hawaii "'Detail information may be obtatnell by call1nl the Battle Group Headquaners, Port DeRussy, or Members and friends are encouraged to visit the unit during their weekly drill assemblies. The "Off Spring" of the 100th Infantry Battalion and the 442nd Regimental Combat Team is currently on an intensive recruiting campaign. The 100th Battle Group, 442nd Infantry, with headquarters at Fort DeRussy, commanded by Lt. Col. "Hank" Oyasato offers an interesting enlistment program for youths 17 to 25 years of age. Fellows in this age group may enlist in the Army Reserve and spend just six months on active duty, after which time they don the Army khaki only during the reserve unit training assemblies on Monday nights. These two -hour drill periods not only keep a man out of reach of the draft, but offers an excellent opportunity for some to learn various trades at Army service schools and with the unit. A full day's pay is earned for each two-hour training asaembly and when the unit trains on SunC1ay, two days' pay is earned. The best time to enlist is during the students' senior year in high school so that they may enter their required six months active duty immediately after completing high school. In this way, high school graduates can pursue their educational and occupational plans without further interruption. Units are located at Fort DeRussy, Wahiawa, Waianae, Late, and HUo. Club members are asked to "pas. the word" to the youngsters to tate advantage of this opportune enli.tment program and have aomeone in the family again wear the u4,und Torch of Liberty" shoulder patch and be a "Go for Broke" member. Able Christmas came early for the Able Chapter members and their famuies when they had their annual Christmas party on December 15,1962. Who has been communicating from Honolulu to the North Pole and prepared the welcoming of Santa Claus at the Clubhouse? It was John Sakaki - party chairman. To get the wonderful-happy group into a cheerful, spirited holiday mood by getting them in the right pitch in singing the Christmas carols while "Sing along with Mitch" was Blue Nagasaki. For the small Keikis - latest cartoons were shown. For the late, late show for the adults - movies of Japan taken by two ace cameramen, Tom Ibaraki and Kadamoto, were shown. Christmas packages were fully packed two days before with candies and fruits by Santa's helpersjohnsakaki, Richard Oki, William Oya, Eugene Kawakami, Kiyoshi Kami, Tak Tak Yamane and Kisuke Arakaki. Preparation and serving of refreshments was done by the smiling, cheerful wives of Santa's helpers such as the Oyas, Sakakis, Nishiokas, Hirayamas, Kawakamis and many more. The mystery man for the evening was Frank Ikehara. Blue Nagasak!
