What Becomes Of Our Sins? W hat becomes of our sins? P. 1 Int. 1. Aim: To show what the New Testament teaches about our sins when we obey the gospel. 2. Sin comes between man and God. The result is that we are separated from God. But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. Isaiah 59:2 a. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; Romans 3:23 b. For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23 3. When a sinner is obedient to the gospel then there is a change in relation to his sins. 4. What happens to our sins? 5. There are several words used in the New Testament to describe the great fact of salvation from sin. Discussion I. REMITTED A. Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 1. Peter had preached the sermon 2. The people who heard this then asked what they should do. 3. This is the answer a. Repent = to think differently, reconsider = a change of thinking about sin b. Be baptized = to immerse, submerge 4. Result = remission of sins
W hat becomes of our sins? P. 2 B. What does Remission mean? 1. Freedom, pardon, forgiveness, liberty 2. The verb form of remission means to throw away or to cast off an object, to send away. 3. When God remits sins, He casts them completely off the individual. 4. No longer is man responsible for the guilt of his sins when God grants to him remission. 5. Man is pardoned from his sins. C. Acts 10:43 To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins. 1. It means a dismissal, release, a passing over 2. God grants remission of sins through the blood of Christ II. NAILED TO THE CROSS A. Colossians 2:14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross; 1. Context - v a. V baptized - buried and raised b. V dead = made alive - forgiven c. V ordinances against us = law of Moses - no one could ever keep it perfectly - only Christ did that. d. By his death Jesus took away that old law
W hat becomes of our sins? P Our sins were transferred to Jesus a. He died in our place. b. He died for sins he did not commit c. He paid a debt he did not make. d. Hebrews 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man. B. Our sins were nailed with him to that cross. 1. This is a very graphic way of saying that the obstacle to forgiveness which lay in the law in the justice of God of which the law is an embodiment was removed by the death of Christ. 2. Practically the nails which fastened to the cross the hands and the feet of Jesus, and thus slew him, pierced and invalidated the law which pronounced the just condemnation of sinners. III. BLOTTED OUT A. Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; Acts 3:19 1. Blotted out = to smear out, obliterate 2. Figuratively it means to pardon sin - wipe away 3. It has the idea of wiping the slate clean 4. Chalk board - erase 5. When God blots out sin, he leaves no semblance whatsoever of sin on the individual.
W hat becomes of our sins? P. 4 B. Acts 3:19 W.N.T. So that the record of your sins may be cancelled. 1. Wiped off, obliterate, Blocked from view 2. Psalms 51:1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions. C. The Greeks used this term of washing out the ink from a papyrus sheet so that it might be used for writing again (Moulton 1963, 221). IV. CLEANSED A. 1 John 1:7-9 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1. Greek word means = to cleanse (literally or figuratively):--(make) clean(-se), purge, purify. 2. Free from dirt, stains, - 3. Purged = to clear of guilt, to make free of something unwanted, comes from a Latin word that means purify or to be pure
W hat becomes of our sins? P. 5 B. Sin makes us dirty 1. 2 Peter 2:7 And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked: 2. Filthy conversation of the wicked = NKJV the filthy conduct of the wicked 3. Psalms 14:3 KJV They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Filthy = corrupt NKJV 4. Rebels against law = lawless 5. The Gospel can clean us from that filth and make us pure in the sight of God. 6. Ananias told Saul in Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. V. CAST INTO THE DEPTHS OF THE SEA A. Micah 7:19 He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. B. Thou wilt utterly abolish them, that they shall not have dominion over us, as Thou didst destroy Pharaoh and his army in the Red sea. This victory will be obtained by the merits of Christ, and the grace of the Gospel. C. Our sins are Lost, destroyed. Buried out of sight. D. They were not dumped at the shore side where they may rise again. E. Ill. Malaysia Flight 370 with 239 people onboard - March 8, 2014 F. They cannot be retrieved - and will never rise again to view.
W hat becomes of our sins? P. 6 VI. REMOVED A. Psalms 103:12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. 1. As far as the East is from the west 2. As the east and the west can never meet in one point, but be for ever at the same distance from each other, so our sins and their decreed punishment are removed to an eternal distance by his mercy. [Adam Clarke s commentary] 3. The sense is, He hath fully pardoned them, so as never to remember them more, as he promised. [Matthew Poole s Commentary] B. No way to measure that distance 1. So it is an infinite length that sin is removed. 2. It is forever forgotten. VII. CAST BEHIND GOD S BACK A. Isaiah 38:17 Behold, for peace I had great bitterness: but thou hast in love to my soul delivered it from the pit of corruption: for thou hast cast all my sins behind thy back. B. Cannot be seen C. To cast a person or thing behind the back' is an Oriental phrase expressing entire oblivion. In reference to crimes, it means to forgive.
W hat becomes of our sins? P. 7 VIII. FORGOTTEN A. Hebrews 10:17 And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. 1. This alludes to those who lived under the old covenant. 2. They offered sin-offerings, but since those sacrifices could not take away sins (Heb 10:11), their sins had to be remembered by the Lord until the perfect sacrifice was offered, viz., Christ's body, which was able to redeem the unatoned-for transgressions under the old covenant. 3. After Christ's sacrifice was made, their sins needed not to be remembered, provided they had offered the appointed typical sacrifices of the law, looking to Christ in faith. B. Their sins would be remembered no more. C. Hebrews 10:18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. IX. Redemption A. The Scriptures use the term redemption as an equivalent for forgiveness. 1. Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 2. Redemption = ransom in full, deliverance 3. Paul declared that it is in Christ that we have our redemption [apolutrosis] through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses 4. Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace; 5. Redemption originally had to do with buying back a slave from his captivity (Arndt and Gingrich 1967, 95);
W hat becomes of our sins? P. 8 B. In the New Testament it suggests the offer of freedom from the consequences of CONCLUSION sin on the basis of Jesus atoning death 1. Romans 3:24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 2. The Lord was a blemishless sacrifice who bore the penalty for our sins 3. Isaiah 53:5-6 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. 1. All have sinned - Romans 3:23 2. We need redemption: It is when we Obey the gospel - H.B.R.C.B 3. A question that was submitted a few months ago. a. When we stand before the judgment seat will we be questioned about things of the past? Will we have to answer about those old sins that we committed before we became a Christian? b. The answer is No 4. Your sins will be: a. Remitted, b. Nailed to the cross, c. Blotted out, d. Cleansed, e. Cast into the depths of the sea, f. Removed, g. Cast behind God s back h. Forgotten i. Redeemed 5. What a great blessing to know that our sins are removed completely and forever.
W hat becomes of our sins? P Acts 22:16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord. sinners. Jesus Christ suffered on behalf of certain sinners. He represented certain sinners. He suffered as a vicarious sacrifice.
God says in Mark 16:16 that those who do not believe the gospel are unregenerate. He says in 1 Corinthians 15:3 that the gospel includes the truth that Christ died for our sins, according to the Scriptures.
