7 VB Acknowledgements It would be difficult to acknowledge the assistance of the many individuals who helped prepare the symposium as well as the subsequent proceedings. But there are some who deserve special mention. The conference benefited from the advance preparation of Paul Baltes, president of the Deseret Language and Linguistics Society, and Diane Strong Krause, secretary of the Society. Important institutional support for the symposium or its proceedings was also provided by the BYU College of Humanities and the Linguistics Department. Participants in the symposium were particularly honored by the participation of John R. Searle, Professor Emeritus of Berkley University, who gave the keynote address; and by the participation of Salvatore Attardo, Stefan Engelberg, Soichi Kozai, and Yuichi Endo. Several of these speakers were gracious enough to include versions of their presentations within the proceedings. We especially wish to thank K. Codell Carter and the Philosophy Department for helping to sponsor Professor Searle's visit.
