12 An nual Christ mas Can tata Per formed By Melissa Pe ter son Well, the weather out - side was fright ful, but the choir was so de light ful! The an nual Ki owa County Community Christmas Can tata was per formed on Sunday eve ning, De - cem ber 14th at the United Meth od ist Church in Eads. While warm and cozy in side, a win try wet snow blan keted the town with out. De spite the weather there was a good turn out for this age-old tra di tional mu si cal Christmas event. Un der the ex em plary di rec tion of Annetta Maxy, of Kit Car son, the choir per formed an in - spiring rendition of Tell Me the Story of Je sus. The Christ mas Can tata was brought to life over fifty years ago by Tommy and Philomene Liesen. They were well-re spected mu sic teach ers who taught in the Eads Schools and who had won 12A KiowaCountyPress.com December 19, 2014 Per form ers and help ers of the Com mu nity Christ mas Can tata. nu mer ous mu sic awards in cho ral and band com - pe ti tions for many years. The Liesens set the stan - dard of per fec tion high and over the years the community choirs have risen to the challenge. This can tata was no ex - cep tion. Ms. Maxy, a mu - sic teacher in Kit Car son, ex pected the best from her sing ers and they de - livered. The uplifting, swing-style com po si tion was sung by mem bers of the com mu nity who hail from all walks of life and love to sing. The pur pose of the can tata was to bring great tid ings of com fort and joy to all who will lis ten; for the Lord and Sav ior Je sus Christ was born in Beth le hem. The beautiful lilting mu - sic tells the story of His love for each of us. The choir em braced this truth de vot edly in each note they sang. The air was filled with the mel o dies of the ages pro claim ing the birth of Jesus Christ. A pro duc tion of this cal i - ber re quires peo ple dil i - gently work ing be hind the scenes; those un sung heroes who gladly bring all the tech ni cal and other pieces of the puz zle to - gether and then fade into the back ground. We want to ac knowl edge the hard work wrought by our mar - velous elves. Nancy Walker is a Jill of all trades when it co mes to get ting the tech ni cal, sec re tarial and any other de tail of the job worked out. She has been a part of the can tata for many years and with out her ser vice things would not run as smoothly - if at all! Nancy ran the CD sound - track, dis trib uted the mu - sic, typed up the pro - grams, worked in light ing the church, helped with the tech ni cal au dio sys - tem and even played Pre - lude mu sic for the au di - ence to en joy! There were other tasks she per - formed that no one even knows about! Terry Riley was the sound guru. He hooked up the sound sys tem which en abled the choir to lis ten to feed back (so we knew when to come in and sing the first note!) and for the au di ence to be able to hear the choir. As many of you may know, Terry is re spon si ble for im ple ment ing the pro jec - tion and sound equip ment at the Plains Thea tre; our beau ti fully re stored movie-house in Eads. He is the wiz-kid be hind the au dio scene kinda like the Wizard of Oz! Joel Maxy, the hus band of our be loved Annetta, was the nar ra tor for the can tata. Joel s thought ful read ings brought in sight to the tell ing of the great - est story ever told. The em cee was our own Tom Da vis. Tom has been the host for the Christ - mas Can tata since the time of Mo ses. His great sense of hu mor and mas - tery of the spo ken word made for an up lift ing and en joy able ex pe ri ence.
