Farmers' Interest /n The World The nterest of the Amercan farmer n a well-ordored world s emphaszed '>y Professor F. A. Pearson and Dean W. I. Myers, of Cornell Unversty, who, after a study *)f the prces of farm products, condnd'c that "the prmary problem of apculture becomes (a) the more gjneral problem of Ktablzng world.prces, whch s mpossble for any one country, or (b) stablznr prces n the Unted States, whch s much smpler f we could agree that t, should be done." The ak'cultural economsts do not beleve that government-sponsored restrcton programs can ncrease total farm ncome, although they may successfully ra.se the total ncome for some crops. The dfference,' they report, s small and they pont out that to rase farm ncome under recent government programs, t was necessary to add party payments. The Cornell professors pont out that the prce of cotton, wth the excepton of the Cvl War perod, has followed the general level of commodty prces n Europe. For almost a century, the prce of wheat n the Unted States has fluctuated around the world prce level. Moreover, durng the last half century, our farm prce of potatoes has followed the general levels of commodty prces n the world, as has the New York prce of mlk. Naval Power At Its Best The landng of Amercan solders en the sland of Mndoro, n the Phlppne group, reportedly made wthout the loss of a man, represents an astonshng projecton of javal power. Movng from Uyte Gulf through Surgao Strat, and the Sulu Sea, the Amercan strkng force navgated waters rnged by Japanese landng felds and, supposedly, the "happy huntng grounds" of Japanese submarnes and torpedo craft. That the expedton was successful attests not only the thoroughness of defeats ndcted upon the Japanese Navy, but the growng mpunty wth whch our lcet dsregards land-based arcraft. The carrer shp strength of the Amercan fleet has reached such proportons n the Pacfc thtvt t s now possble for carrer-based arcraft to overwhelm Japanese land-based arcraft. Strkng from the docks of ther carrers, Amercan planes blast Japanese arcraft statoned at sland bases and manage to mantan aeral supremacy despte frantc Japanese efforts to send n aeral renforcements. It should be noted that the use of amphbous tactcs alone has made possble the steady advance of Amercan ground forces nto the Phlppne slands. Such taclcs are only possble to the naton whch controls the surroundng waters. Intellgently and "boldly utlzed, as n the present nstance, amphbous offenses catch the enemy unaware, n hs weak places', and move forward, wth slght Josses, to nevtable vctory. Wounded Solder Speaks (The Amercan people should never acfteve a 'forget and forgve' atttude after \e war," declares Leutenant Samuel E. Ke\k. speakng from hs bunk abroad a hosptm shp whch recently arrved, at Charleston, S. C, from Europe. The Leutenant was wounded n the nvason of Normandy and captured by tfye Germans, le s btter about the treatment gven some wounded Amercans, two of whom, he reports, were gven hypodermcs by German doctors employng euthanasa, or "mercy kllng," whch s not recognzed n our army. The words of the Leutenant represent the judgment of a man who has suffered for hs country and who had, ft frst hand an opportunty to judge hs enemes. They should be remembered by every Amercan when soft-headed sentmentalsts begn tc talk about "mercy" -for the Germans. Suftxests Equalzna Taxes., Forella La Guarda, Mayor of New \York, advocates a natonal taxng polcy, tyth "unformty of taxes throughout tn.;,country n order to avod placng'busness and, ndustry n any secton of the country at a dsadvantage." ton and the unbalanced tax stuaton between the varous stales. He suggests that ncome and ebrporaton taxes should be left to the natonal government, wth no state ncome tuxes anywhere. One of the great dffcultes of state and local governments n assumng a proper responsblty toward modern socety s a lack of ncome. Whle moat of the states are enjoyng abnormal revenue, due to the spur of war ncomes, the state and local governments, n normal tmes, have a problem to secure adequate funds. We are not nclned to agree wth the suggeston that ncome and corporaton taxes should be left exclusvely to the Federal (Jdvernm'vt. Perhaps, a better soluton would be to leave the levy and collecton of these taxes to the Federal Government-wth a plan devsed to dstrbute a percentage of total collectons to state and local governments. Ths would assure, we beleve, adequate^, revenue for these unts to carry ther proper burdens of government. "fat...in The World" The Unted States has "the best army, navy and marne corps n the world today," declares Vce-Admral Marc A. Mtsrher, who commanded a carrer task force n the Pacfc for the past two years. The Admral beleves that half of the Japanese'Navy has been wped out, that Japanese naval avaton has been practcally elmnated and that the Jap fleet wll come out agan. Probably, the most argumentatve phase of hs dscusson of the current war s an expressed preference for carrer-based, nstead of land-based, planes. The Admral ponts out that "on an sland t would all be over n an hour, wth the base useless for a tme, anyway, whle the carrers can move around at wll." Undoubtedly, there s somethng to the pont made by Admral Mtscher. In establshng land bases on the slands of the Pacfc, to help our push across the ocean, we had to leave them behnd as the tde of war moved onward. In the carrer strkes aganst the Central Pacfc bases of the enemy, however, the carrers, after performng one job, moved on to the next. Brtsh Women To Fght Whle the Unted States contnues to have dffcultes n securng suffcent women volunteers for the WACs, the Government of Great Brtan announces that women, now mannng ant-arcraft batteres n Brtan, wll soon go nto acton on the Contnent of Europe, Ths announcement has not receved great publcty, but t represents a remarkable development n Brtan war-makng. Faced by an overwhelmng combnaton of enemes and overwhelmng aeral attack, the Brtsh found t necessary to use women to man ant-arcraft batteres to defend the-island. Now, wth the war n ts fnal stages, and wth manpower fully employed, the Brtsh plan to sead the women to serve batteres n Europe, where, we presume, they wll defend relatvely sheltered areas. We call ths tam partcularly to the attenton of women who are of the ages and elgblty necessary to serve the Unted States n ts present wars. Surely, the.brtsh Empre does not produce lner or more patrotc women than the Unted States. What, therefore, explans the apparent unwllngness of Amercan women to respond to the needs of the naton and ts wounded men? Overseas Broadcasts Arte Shaw, wwll known band lender, was recently dscharged from the Navy after a year's servce n the Pacfc thentre of acton. He comes home wth the opnon that most morale broadcasts "just rub salt" n the, feelng of overseas servcemen. Mr. Shaw ponts out that the men n the trenches know "the people who are broadcastng gush are sleepng n beds wthout planes earnng over." We can magne* that some of the pep and morale talks, needed on the home front to awaken sleepng'cvlans as to the necesstes of the war, sound strange to men rskng ther lves under enemy lre.
