Vlume 16 Number 3 Fall 2006 A Histry f Central Refrmed Church f Grand Rapids Central Refrmed Church f Grand Rapids, Michigan, is ne f nly a few cngregatins in the Midwest that can trace its rigins back t the early seventeenth-century when the Refrmed Church in America (RCA) was, itself, funded. Central was funded as First Refrmed Prtestant Dutch Church f Grand Rapids in 1840 as part f the Refrmed Church in America s Western Enterprise. Over frty English-speaking churches were started in Michigan in this way, as the denminatin fllwed RCA members wh traveled frm the east t what was then the west. Preceding generatins f these funders had been in America lng befre the Revlutinary War, in which many fught n the British side and many thers n the Clnial s side. They were in America when its first president was elected. They fught in the War f 1812, the Mexican War, served as senatrs, representatives, gvernrs, mayrs, teachers, writers, wrked in the skilled trades and ccupatins needed t make a cmmunity successful. And, during all f this time, ver tw hundred years, men and wmen raised thusands f children, many f whm were drawn west as pineers in the nineteenth century, fllwed there by the RCA. by Daniel L. Ballast First Refrmed Church, ; Secnd Refrmed Church, ; First Refrmed Church, , They were accepting f sme variatins in wrship styles, and tended tward being revivalist. And there was a willingness t lk fr new insights int Hly Scripture. In wrship, the Eastern Church, including First Refrmed Prtestant Dutch Church, practiced every ne f the reasns several f the immigrant churches, within ten years f jining the RCA, seceded in These eastern churches sang nn-davidic hymns, they had an pen cmmunin table, preached many sermns nt based entirely n the catechism, and had chirs. Because they tended tward revivalism, and preached sermns designed t bring peple int a brn again cnversin, they were accused by the immigrant church f having Remnstrant, heretical views - a belief that humans shared in the implementatin f Gd s intentins tward them. Sme f the new immigrants als disagreed with the wrd Prtestant in the title f the eastern churches, because it implied a relatinship with ther denminatins. In church gvernance, reginal and lcal reslutin f issues was encuraged. While they cnsidered themselves Dutch, during the clnial perid there was much intermarrying (cntinued n page 2)

Frm the Directr In this issue yu will learn abut the wnderful and inspiring histry f Central Refrmed Church f Grand Rapids, Michigan. Thrugh the ups and the dwns f phenmenal grwth, secessin, fire, and declining membership, this church cntinues t serve thse seeking the Wrd f Gd in the city f Grand Rapids. The Assciatin fr the Advancement f Dutch American Studies (AADAS) will be meeting at Hpe Cllege in June 2007 fr its biennial meeting. Our ffice clleagues in the A. C. Van Raalte Institute will be serving as yur hsts fr tw pen huses, as well as crdinating many f the venues, fd, and prgrams. A call fr papers can be fund n page five, and there will be mre infrmatin t cme. Geffrey D. Reynlds Histry f Central Refrmed Church (cntinued frm page 1) between natinalities, including French Huguents, English, and Wallns. When the Dutch immigrants arrived in Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1846, they were invited by First Refrmed Prtestant Dutch Church t share their church building. This ffer was part f an rganized effrt by the RCA t bring the immigrant churches int the denminatin. With this nging influx f Dutch immigrants t Michigan, beginning in 1846, the Western Enterprise essentially ended, and by the end f Wrld War One, nly a handful f these riginal Michigan churches, established by the eastern RCA, remained. Since First Church was struggling fr survival already at that time, they met fr wrship nly nce n Sunday, in the mrning. The immigrant church met fr a Dutch language wrship service in the afternn. After three years, the immigrants were ready t frm a church f their wn. Nte that while they were meeting in the same church building as the English-speaking First Church, they did nt jin with them. They requested that Rev. Albertus Van Raalte, the persn wh led them t America, make the trek frm Hlland, Michigan, t Grand Rapids t frmally rganize their church. They named this new church Secnd Refrmed Church f Grand Rapids, Michigan. Because First Refrmed Church cntinued t fail, it was nt lng befre Secnd Refrmed Church essentially tk ver the church building, and were then able t wrship several times each Sunday. Secnd Refrmed Church met in First Refrmed Church s edifice until 1854 when they built their wn church clser t the center f the small city. They culd have taken ver First Refrmed Church s building at that time, but they were afraid that they wuld be behlden t the eastern churches that had funded First Refrmed Church in After Secnd Refrmed Church mved t their new building, First Refrmed Church Secnd Refrmed Church, building std empty fr several years, and it was ccasinally rented t businesses r t missinary grups frm ther denminatins in the city. First Refrmed Church, hwever, experienced a re-birth, irnically because f the cntinued flw f Dutch immigrants t West Michigan, and t Grand Rapids. Many yung peple, and sme f their parents, wanted their children t learn English and becme Americanized. Fur immigrant families left Secnd Refrmed Church ver vigrus ppsitin t help get First Refrmed Church ging again. After that, the mre immigrants that came t Grand Rapids, the mre First Refrmed Church grew. Secnd Refrmed Church, n the ther hand, did mre than just grw they were verwhelmed by the huge number f immigrants that came t wrship. In 1857, hwever, their minister led ver half f the membership ut as part f the secessin that eventually resulted in the frming f the Christian Refrmed Church (CRC) denminatin. Secnd Refrmed Church was frced t sell their parsnage in rder t pay their bills. But, the decade f the 1860s brught new immigrants wh jined RCA churches, including Secnd Refrmed Church, still nly ne f the tw RCA churches in the city f Grand Rapids, and the nly ne that wrshiped in 2

the Dutch language. S many jined, in fact, that by 1870 they had t build a new, much larger church building. Secnd Refrmed Church, and by then ther RCA churches in the city, was devastated in the 1880s because f the secret sciety, r ldge issue, and First Refrmed Church was impacted indirectly because fewer persns were subsequently available t jin them. Almst all immigrants frm then n jined lcal Christian Refrmed churches. And, by then, ther RCA churches were being started away frm the city center. RCA members culd nw wrship clser t where they lived. Withut realizing it at that time, bth First and Secnd Refrmed Churches were beginning an ver thirtyyear struggle fr survival. During this thirty plus year perid f struggle, Secnd Refrmed Church was able t respnd t increasing internal pressure t adpt the English language in wrship and in ther areas f church life. The nging pressure t cntinue the Dutch language was significantly lessened because the influx f Dutch immigrants wh wanted t jin any RCA church had literally stpped. Fr ver thirty years, bth First and Secnd Refrmed Churches wrked hard t attract new members t wrship in the dwntwn area f the grwing city. But, there were few takers. First and Secnd Refrmed Churches, wh had grwn apart in their cmpetitin and disagreements with each ther, gradually began t frm relatinships. Their yung peple began meeting tgether, and they, as adults, became the frce behind the effrt t unite the tw churches. impulses cntinue t run deeply thrugh its veins. They called Dr. Jhn A. Dykstra, a yung man in his mid-thirties, t be the first pastr f the united church. He had been brn and raised in Grand Rapids, but went t New Brunswick Seminary and had pastred tw eastern churches, the secnd ne in New Yrk City. He was revivalist (must have made the frmer members f Secnd blush), and very energetic. And, his wife was a dynam and active in the wmen s rganizatins f the denminatin, and became a Jhn A. Dykstra, the first minister f Central Refrmed Church, served frm leader in the cngregatin. The First and Secnd Wrld Wars, the Krean Cnflict, the grwing mdernism mvement in the early twentieth century, made Central even mre attractive. The church dubled in size between 1918 and The last half f the twentieth-century, hwever, was difficult fr Central Refrmed Church, as it was fr the RCA and ther mainline especially dwntwn churches. The push and pull f demgraphic, religius, and plitical frces that dminated the cities f the United States have challenged Central s preeminence amng RCA churches in the city f Grand Rapids and the metrplitan Grand Rapids area. These challenges were many, and they cntinue: First Refrmed Church, ; Central Refrmed Church, In 1918, First Refrmed Church, started by the eastern RCA in 1840, and Secnd Refrmed Church, funded by Dutch immigrants in 1849, united t frm Central Refrmed Church f Grand Rapids, Michigan. These tw strng The city became a place t visit rather than live as urban renewal prjects tre dwn buildings and built new nes, and neighbrhds surrunding the dwntwns became blighted. The mvement t the new suburbs brught a new culture symblized by televisin and the new McDnald s restaurants, shpping malls, and entertainment centers. This mvement left cities alne, including many dwntwn churches, withut much help, t exist as they had in the past. The 1960s brught further crises as Grand Rapids, alng with many cities, erupted with vilence. A trip dwntwn t church n Sunday became less desirable. Mainline denminatins became mre identified with gvernment effrts t embark n a War n Pverty. Religin became mre abut humanity than Gd. The basic needs f humans were identified as physical, nt spiritual. Evangelism and revivalism faded in mainline denminatins and churches, as feeding bdies became mre imprtant than feeding suls, 3

and help was given in the name f the church, but the name f Christ diminished. In the "me" decade f the 1970s, nearly every identifiable grup in the United States claimed victim status, as shared respnsibility replaced persnal respnsibility, and village replaced family. Dwntwn churches became cnfused, and their visins faltered. In the 1980s, greed became healthy, individualism and privatism grew, and scial justice themes permeated many mainline churches. An interest in spreading the gspel faded even mre. At the end f the twentieth-century, saying the right plitically crrect thing became mre imprtant than ding the right thing. As with First and Secnd Refrmed churches, wh began the twentieth-century withut a visin fr the future, s Central Refrmed Church ended the twentieth-century withut a clear visin fr the future. But, als like First and Secnd Refrmed churches, Central is facing the challenges f a new century. It has adpted a new visin and is nw in the prcess f creating ideas with actins that are aligned with this new visin. Directin t this new visin is prvided by what is called The Cnstellatin f Stars - Excellent Wrship, Christ-like Caring, Outreach Oriented, Scially Engaged, Excellent Facilities, Life-lng Learning, and Ministry t Yuth. We believe that the future is very bright fr Central Refrmed Church, and that it will nt nly reach its 200 th birthday in the year 2040, but will als be thriving as new and mature Christians find ever new ways t grw Christ s Kingdm. Writing a Histry f Central Refrmed Church After jining Central in 1975, I sn knew abut the infrmatin presented in the first three paragraphs that began this shrt article. It tk a very shrt perid f time fr me t get invlved in the challenges facing my new church. The lder members were still talking abut when the church edifice burned t the grund in the 1950s and abut the very divisive infighting that ensued abut where t rebuild. This cnflict began at the end f the thirty-five year pastrate f the senir pastr wh had led the church since the unin f the First and Secnd Refrmed churches in 1918, and wh was instrumental t the grwth it experienced. The timing culd nt have been wrse. It tk nly a shrt while befre many questins began t cme t my mind: Why was the Western Enterprise essentially abandned and the churches established by the eastern church begin t die? Did the new wave f Dutch immigrants t West Michigan in 1846 have smething t d with it? Why did these tw separate and s different factins (eastern RCA and mid-western immigrant) jin tgether in 1850? What caused the fighting between the tw factins that led t the secessins in 1857 and again in the 1880 s? Why did sme f the immigrant churches nt secede and remain in the RCA? Hw was the RCA impacted by these tw frces? Hw were individual churches in dwntwn Grand Rapids impacted? Why in the wrld wuld tw f these churches ne established by the eastern RCA and the ther an immigrant church unite tgether in 1918 t frm Central Refrmed Church? Why did this new church prsper? Hw did the uniting f these tw churches frm very different beginnings impact Central Refrmed Church then and nw? Why the deep divisins abut where t rebuild when the church burned in the 1950s? What happened t Central Refrmed Church during the rest f the twentieth-century, its challenges, its failings, and its attempts t understand and respnd t the demands f the late twentieth-century and early twenty-first century? Will its actins in respnse t thse challenges lead it t prsper, r will it fail t accurately understand the needs f the twentyfirst century and fail t reach its 200 th birthday in 2040? And, f curse, threaded thrughut all f these questins is great curisity abut the peple in Central s histry, their mtivatins, and the shrt and lng-term cnsequences f their actins. These questins brught abut my interest in writing a bk abut the histry f Central Refrmed Church. And, this interest happened t cincide with the anticipated 50 th anniversary f the current church edifice in The pastr and the cnsistry cmmissined me t write a 315-page histry bk. Sme f thse reading this might have similar questins abut their wn churches. I invite yu t find answers t yur questins, and in the prcess find mre questins that will excite yu t find mre answers. Getting Started 1. Decide if it is wrth the effrt. Wuld a written histry f yur church help yur cngregatin understand itself and prvide incentives fr making changes and/r excitement fr the future? Shuld thse that preceded yu, thse already lst t yur histry, be hnred with rediscvery? Can yur histry reveal the wrking f Gd in the midst f thse gne befre, and inspiratin fr yur future? 2. Check yur archives. If yu d nt have an archive, yu need t start ne - ne place fr yur past bulletins; newsletters; minutes f yur cnsistry, bards f elders and 4

deacns; minutes f cmmittees; pictures; newspaper articles abut peple, activities, and prgrams having t d with yur church; directries; financial infrmatin; the cnstructin f yur church(es), etc. 3. Check ther archives, like the Jint Archives f Hlland. This archive has infrmatin abut many churches in the RCA, nt just thse in the Midwest. Als, check with the archives at New Brunswick Seminary. 4. G t yur lcal library t search fr infrmatin abut yur church, its peple, and yur cmmunity. Yu will be surprised at hw much infrmatin is likely t be there. I fund newspapers f the day t be especially helpful in prviding anecdtes and flavr t histrical details. 5. Study the infrmatin yu are able t garner and pick ut significant events and peple. Deepen yur research in rder t find ut mre s that yu can begin t interpret mtivatins and cnsequences. 6. When the writing starts. Decide whether yur written histry is t be a listing f histrical facts abut yur church, spiced up with pictures, r a bk that places yur church and its peple in the histrical cntext f yur city, state and natin. Lk at and examine the plitical, ecnmic, and scial issues facing yur pastrs and membership. One f the easier parts f writing histry, as ppsed t a nvel, is that the beginning is almst always knwn. It is likely that yu knw the date yur church was funded and the names f the peple that funded it. It is interesting that s many peple between the beginning and nw are lst t yur histry unless yu bring them t life. Yu are nw living what will be the final chapter f yur bk. The blanks f peple, events, dates, and their significance nly need t be filled in. The bk, Then, Nw, Always, Jesus is Lrd, the Histry f Central Refrmed Church, Grand Rapids, Michigan, is available and can be used as a mdel. It can be purchased fr $10.00 frm Central Refrmed Church, 10 Cllege Ave., N.E., Grand Rapids, MI Abut the Authr Daniel L. Ballast is a native f Grand Rapids, Michigan. He hlds master s and specialist degrees in cunseling and a dctrate in psychlgy and cunseling. He has c-authred tw bks n prgram develpment in an educatinal setting and published several articles n the same subject. A member f Central Refrmed Church fr nearly thirty years, he has served n the cnsistry as deacn and elder several times ver. The Assciatin fr the Advancement f Dutch-American Studies (AADAS) will hld its 2007 biennial meeting at Hpe Cllege, Hlland, Michigan, n June 7-9, 2007 (Thursday nn -Saturday nn). Yu are invited t submit prpsals fr individual papers r panels. The cnference theme is Dutch-American Arts and Letters. One f the features f a strng subculture is the presence f a crpus f ethnic literature and art. Hw did art cntribute t the frmatin f a Dutch-American subculture? What distinctive elements did Dutch- American artistic expressins pssess? Were these inspired by trends in the Old Cuntry? Which influence did these expressins exert inside and utside the subculture? Subjects culd include: * Dutch-American artists * Dutch-American authrs (David Crnel De Jng, Frederick Manfred, Sietze Bunning, Peter De Vries, James C. Schaap, etc.) * Dutch-American autbigraphies and memirs * Dutch-American newspapers and jurnalists * Reading culture amng Dutch immigrants * Publishers and art-dealers as culture brkers * Sermns and eulgies rhetrical styles, themes, etc. * Dutch literature in translatin * Teaching f Dutch-language skills and its impact * Stry-telling in Dutch-America * Dutch-American scientists * Dutch-American musicians and musical writings * The Dutch image in yuth literature Paper prpsals n Dutch-American tpics nt related t the theme will als be cnsidered. As with the cnferences at Trinity 2003 and Drdt 2005, papers relating t the cnference theme will be cnsidered fr inclusin in a bk t be published under the auspices f the Jint Archives f Hlland The prgram cmmittee cnsists f Rbert Swierenga, chair, Jack Nyenhuis, Nella Kennedy (Hpe Cllege), and Hans Krabbendam (Rsevelt Study Center). Prpsals, cnsisting f abstract (abut 300 wrds) and ne-page cv, shuld be submitted by December 1, 2006 t: Rbert P. Swierenga Swierenga@hpe.edu Call fr Papers r by mail t: A.C.
