All new Officers and Board Members are invited to a leadership orientation at 11 AM that day. Brunch will be served! WOW VALENTINE S PARTY will be Wednesday, 12, for all kids in grades K-4. Join us for games, activities, and Valentine fun! The party starts at 4:00 PM and ends after supper, (5:30). Invite your friends! We have lots of great events coming up in! I want to take a moment to highlight just a few of the things we have coming up: For several years now, we have joined congregations and youth groups around the country in celebrating Souper Bowl Sunday on Superbowl Sunday. As millions of people around the world prepare to watch the big football game and enjoy lots of food and celebration, we take some time to remember those who perhaps don t have food to eat or a warm house where they can enjoy a party. This year, on 2, you are invited to participate by bringing $1 (or more) to drop in a soup kettle for ELCA World Hunger. You can even pick who you think will be the winning Super Bowl Team by placing your money in the kettle for either the Denver Broncos or Seattle Seahawks! You are also encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank. We will have a football field in the Narthex that morning. Let s see how many yards of canned goods we can get. Can St. James make a canned good touchdown?? To get in the spirit of the day, you are encouraged to wear a jersey or shirt from your favorite football team or your favorite team colors! On 2, we will also celebrate with some of our young people on their First Communion Sunday. At 9:15, several of our youth in 3rd grade and older will join us at the communion table for the first time. They will be using glasses designed by them for this special day. Please join me in praying for them as they take this next step in their faith journey! On 9, we will have a Leadership Orientation for all of our Council and Board Members serving St. James in The day will start with installation of all officers and Board Members at either the 8 or 9:15 worship. The orientation will begin at 11:00. Brunch will be served. We will talk about our Vision and set some goals for the year. There will be a prize for the Board with the most members in attendance! ~Pastor Jeni

2 News From Our Members THOSE WE HAVE REMEMBERED IN PRAYER: Gary Beaver, Julie Eppens, Dean Hauge, Ed Meyer, Marilyn Monahan, and Chuck Vosburgh. If you or someone you know is hospitalized, has had surgery, or would like a pastoral visit, please contact Pastor Jeni. WHEN THERE IS ILLNESS IN YOUR FAMILY please notify the church office or one of the pastors. Also, a periodic update on their health is appreciated. We want to pray for those who are experiencing health issues. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ OUR CHRISTIAN SYMPATHY is extended to Gene and Michelle Larson on the death of Michelle s mother Ginette Revaux. Ginette died on January 19 at Good Shepherd Health Center. Our prayer is that you feel the love of God from the hearts of those who care and share in your time of sorrow. When there is a death of a family member, please call the church office so that we may make a note of it in an upcoming Journal. Also please call the church office if a name has been inadvertently omitted. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS Laina Jade Nelson was born in Iowa City on January 23. Parents are Matthew and Kenza Nelson; grandparents are Pastor Paul and Kathy. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ THANK YOU to all who helped with the WSCT Radio Barn Dance and Silent Auction on January 12, and thank you to all who donated baskets or other items for the Silent Auction. Over $1200 was raised toward new technology for our sound system. THANK YOU! To all the carolers who surprised me last month at Christmas time at my Kentucky Ridge Apartment! They brought a lot of Christmas cheer and fun with their singing! The music and warm friendship brought me much joy!! God Bless you all! Happy New Year! ~Lyn (Dorothy) Nelson WELCOME TO PASTOR JOEL DAHLEN The Congregation Council has contracted with Pastor Joel Dahlen for 6 months as staff support. He will be able to help with any pastoral duties (visits, weddings, funerals, preaching, teaching, etc) as decided between the two pastors. This will allow Pastor Jeni time to help the transition team with procedures needed to move the congregation forward until the council has time to locate and call a part-time interim pastor. The ultimate goal is, of course, for a call committee to get the congregation profile completed and call a senior pastor. Please take a few moments to introduce yourself to Pastor Joel and his wife, Renee. THANK YOU TO Lynn Christensen, John Diaz, Ray Groth, Harold Hansen and Parnell Petersen for taking down the Christmas trees. Don Priebe for making insulation panels for the nave and to Alf Larson for helping him install them about the cross. DEAR FRIENDS, Thank you for your generous gift of baby clothes & baby food. It is encouraging for us to know that concerned individuals within the community are aware of the needs we meet and are willing to assist us in our mission. ~Sincerely, Mary J. Ingham, Executive Director Crisis Intervention Center I WANT TO GIVE A SPECIAL THANK YOU to all those who were involved in special music during the Christmas season and services. The Chancel and Youth Choirs, all the soloists, the Sunday School Band and Sunday School participants, and the Worship Band. Also, I want to thank Carmen for the extra services she played. ( We do keep our fingers in shape during this time!) I hope you know that your music touched many! Again, Thank you! ~Cynthia, Music Director THANK YOU TO EVERYONE for the cards, food and prayers given to us after my surgery. We are so appreciate everything. ~Steve & Jane Trainer 2

6 St. James News BREAD FOR VISITORS Are you interested in making bread or greeting visitors? We need your help! There are sign-up sheets posted on the Altar Flower & Radio Ministry board next to Sarah s office. Maybe you can bake bread but can't hand it out on that Sunday. That's ok. Maybe you can hand it out but can't bake the bread. That's ok too. We can work as a team! There is a pan available in the Fireside kitchen that will bake eight small loaves at once for you to borrow, if you need. We ask that you please remember to put it back for the next baker. Any size you want to make is fine, though. You can bake any kind of bread. In the past, bakers have made pumpkin, banana, white, and cinnamon. Pastor Jeni will announce during worship that visitors can come to the Welcome desk and pick up a loaf of bread. This project is not just for women. I know there are some men in the congregation who are fantastic cooks/bakers! I bet we also have some teens and preteens who are good in the kitchen! You could sign up as a family or a group of friends. Make it fun and not a chore! This is one small way St. James can welcome visitors. If you have any questions, please call Suzanne McKee at or Sarah in the office. Thank you! FEBRUARY BREAD BAKERS Sue Ollman Ann Sletten Suzanne McKee Need CONSIDERING BIBLE CAMP THIS SUMMER?
