3 Dear Friends, One of my favorite movies is The Wizard of Oz. Dorothy feels comfortable with farm life until an outside agent wants to take what is most precious away from her unjustly. Life in the pews can become very comfortable. We sit in the same place, talk to the same people around us, and then get to go back to our normal lives. Summer was a nice break, but now it is back to our regular routine. Or is it? As I begin my sixth year it is tempting to just remain comfortable. Office life flows smoothly most of the time, meetings roll around mostly on schedule, and pastoral connection to small groups and our shut ins just move forward as always. I was ready to just spend my summer really getting to know my neighbors and community as we are all outside most of the time. But then the tornado of family need came rolling in and I found myself away from all the familiar surroundings, support system, and routine. We all will experience the tornadoes within our lives. It will destroy some preconceptions. It may break old habits. After the storm, the rainbow of God s presence does come. During our journey together, we can encounter new scarecrows: recognizing that God s Spirit does dwell within and around us at all times and will not change. We join the tin men who long to love with their hearts, and find we already have this ability given by grace. With the cowardly lions, we find that we stand united as the Body of Christ against the forces of the world that would defeat and separate us. We have been and are courageous. Continued on page 4 3

4 The best part of the movie is the inward journey of Dorothy who finds there is no place like home. She has been away and only wants to get back where she belongs. After my two month leave of absence, I truly say: there is no place like home as I step back into the routine of life. The realities take on new depths and meanings. We welcome the familiar face of Sterling Finkbine in a more formal role as our Choir Director. New leadership and ministry impacts will fill our tomorrows. It is the inner peace of nothing can separate you from God s love through Jesus Christ. Welcome back from vacations, time outside, and survivors of the summer storms. Open your eyes to the beauty of congregational life at Venice. It is my desire that you also will be able to say: There is no place like home here at Venice Church. With blessings Pastor Jan 4
