2 Accreditation Review (Winter 2013) Department of Religious Education Accreditation Review 2014 Introduction The following review is provided to show how the efforts of the Department of Religious Education contribute to meeting and fulfilling the university outcomes. It is broken into the following sections: I. University Outcomes II. Department Outcomes Mapped to the University Outcomes III. Assessment Tools/Data IV. Plan for Improvement University Outcomes The purpose of a BYU-Idaho education is to help students to become: 1. Creative and critical thinkers 2. Lifelong learners 3. Effective communicators 4. Skilled professionals 5. Engaged citizens 6. Disciple leaders Outcomes for the Department of Religious Education: 1. Students will deepen their personal conversion of the Savior Jesus Christ as they increase in faith live according to the precepts of the Gospel develop into disciple-leaders 2. Students will demonstrate increased gospel scholarship as they learn the doctrines and principles of the Gospel of Jesus Christ as contained in the Holy Scriptures and words of the prophets and strive to apply them in their lives. As they do so students will learn to be source-critical regarding doctrinal statements not found in the Scriptures learn to manage ambiguity remember that God "will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the kingdom of God." 3. Students will demonstrate increased competence in teaching the gospel to others as they explain and testify of gospel truth resist the need to provide a why to every question to discern between opinion and doctrine. increase in their commitment to God as demonstrated by their willingness to receive the sacred ordinances of the temple, serve honorable missions when called, and provide voluntary community and church service University Outcomes Department Outcomes that Achieve University Outcomes Creative and critical thinkers Outcome 2 Lifelong learners Outcomes 1, 2, 3 Effective communicators Outcome 3 Skilled professionals Outcomes 2, 3 Engaged citizens Outcomes 1, 3 Disciple leaders Outcomes 1, 2, 3 2

We have put forth significant effort to create the instruments, but have not yet implemented course adjustments. Our plan for the future includes, but is not limited to the following: 1. Analyze data from appendixes I, II, III, IV, thoroughly for program effectiveness and implement any needed adjustments. This is already underway as can be observed with our newly updated departmental outcomes (measured in appendixes I, II, IV), and determining faculty effectiveness (measured by appendixes III, and V which is yet to be developed). 2. Begin winter semester to provide each faculty member with departmental data so they can assess their own course effectiveness to ensure they are: a. Doing all they can to address the department outcomes in their own individual courses. b. Developing their own measurements (both direct and indirect) to verify their own classes are meeting the department outcomes. c. Developing an ongoing plan to increase their own effectiveness in their individual classrooms. 3

5 This online survey was administered in late May to mid-june to 750 randomly selected sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Freshmen were excluded from the survey because their experience with religion classes would be minimal. Of the 750 students surveyed, 305 students responded to the invitation survey for a response rate of 41%. No incentives were offered. One follow up reminder was issued. The survey ran for three weeks. The survey consisted of seven rating scales and one open-ended question, full survey results are available on request. 1. 13 class standing, and marital status. The crosstabulation analysis used the Pearson chi-square statistic to determine if there were statistically significant differences in the way the subgroups responded to questions in the survey. A Cramer s V statistic was also computed to show the strength of the difference. Cramer s V can be interpreted in a manner similar to a correlation coefficient where lower values indicate weak differences and higher values indicate strong differences. The following table summarizes how the V-statistics can be interpreted. Level Interpretation.10 to.20 Weak.20 to.25 Moderate.25 to.30 Moderately strong.30 to.35 Strong.35 to.40 Very strong Overall, the crosstabulation analysis showed that there were several significant differences between male and female students but no differences between single and married students and no differences among sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The gender differences were all judged to be moderately strong. The crosstabs with significant differences appear in the following series of tables. All tables are shown in a separate Excel workbook provided as part of this report. Table 1 My religion courses have strengthened my testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. 16 Appendix II Survey on How Students Approach Gospel Issues and Questions Spring 2013 Prepared by the Office of Institutional Research June 2013 IR

17 This online survey was administered in May 2013 to 1,000 freshman and senior students. No sophomores or juniors were included. One follow-up reminder was issued. The purpose of the survey was expressed to students as follows: Part of a religious education at BYU-Idaho involves obtaining a better understanding of the doctrine, principles, and practices of the church. Another part of obtaining a religious education is learning and practicing the skills necessary for effective life-long study. In order to help the Department of Religious Education at BYU-Idaho better meet this goal, please take a few minutes and complete the linked survey. Of the 1,000 students who were surveyed, 422 students responded to the survey for a 42% response rate. This respondent pool yields a margin of error (i.e., sampling error) of 4.6%. We can be 95% confident that the results of this survey are within plus or minus 4.6% of the true number. Based on the analysis of demographic variables (see section 9), the resulting sample of respondents proved to be representative of the population from which it was drawn. Results are presented in the following tables. 1. Which of the following is the best source for understanding doctrine? 23 10. Crossstabulation Analysis of Freshmen versus Seniors A crosstabulation analysis of the surey data was conducted to determine if there were any differences between freshmen and seniors, the primary subgroups of interest. This analysis produced a table for each question in the survey showing the count and percentage of responses in each subgroup. It also produced a Pearson chi-square statistic, a p-value, and a Cramer s V statistic. These tables and accompanying statistics are provided in Appendix A. The Pearson chi-square statistic is used to determine if there are statistically significant differences in the way the subgroups responded to questions in the survey. A p-value is computed for each Pearson chi-square. The p-value is the probability that differences are due to chance alone. The common practice is to assert that tables with a p-value of less than.05 show a statistical significant difference in the response patterns of the subgroups. Tables in which the p- value >.05 indicate that there is no difference between the subgroups response patterns. A Cramer s V statistic shows the strength of a significant difference. Cramer s V can be interpreted in a manner similar to a correlation coefficient where lower values indicate weak differences and higher values indicate strong differences. The following table summarizes how the V-statistics can be interpreted. Level of V Interpretation.10 to.20 Weak.20 to.25 Moderate.25 to.30 Moderately strong.30 to.35 Strong.35 to.40 Very strong The Pearson chi-square statistic requires that at least 80% of the cells in a crosstabulation table have a count greater than 5 and that no cells in the table are empty. This requirement was not met in some of the tables because so few students responded in the extreme on questions (e.g., never or strongly disagree). If future analyses are done, response categories should be combined so that the requirements of the crosstabulation analysis can be met. Three questions showed a p-value less than.05. One of them failed to meet the assumptions. The two tables which did meet the assumptions and did show a p-value <.05 are shown as Tables 1 and 2 of this section. Table 1 suggests that freshmen are more likely to see scriptural commentaries by General Authories s the best source for understanding church doctrine (23.4% vs. 15.3%) whereas seniors are more likely to see official statements from the Church as the best source (29.2% vs. 18.6%). Table 2 suggests that seniors do not expect teachers to have a ready answer to gospel questions (34.5% seniors disagreeing vs. 22% freshmen disagreeing). Freshmen also tend to be more neutral about this expectation (47.6% vs. 38%). In either case, the V-statistics shows that these differences are weak. There were no differences between freshmen and seniors on all other questions. 19
