And t's partcularly depressng when the actng dean of the College of Arts and Scences does so. n Wednesday's DP, Actng Dean Peter J. Conn called Ford's planned graduaton speech a "breathtakng mstake." t's a mstake. Conn says, because Ford has "dsplayed an entre assemblage of reactonary and nhumane poltcal nstncts." Conn has fallen nto two traps. Frst, he has confused "respect" wth "agreement." t's easy to dsagree wth a presdent's phlosophy and even easer to dslke hm. But t's much more dffcult to respect hm and crtcze hm n a scholarly manner. Second. Conn has adopted the radcal's tactcs: httng pontblank wth colorful, but ambguous words. We may not. and should not. agree wth many of Ford's vews. But he certanly deserves our respect, f smply for the now wldly nave reason that he s our presdent. Representatve democraces endure, after all. because ther ctzens agree lo respect ther leaders durng ther terms of offce. But "reactonary and nhumane poltcal nstncts" partcularly dstresses me. don't know what specfc actons or vews consttute reactonary and nhumane"; 've never seen an exhaustve set of Jennewen examples of such. Maybe Conn has. But to my knowledge of the terms, Ford s not reactonary and seems more humane than the rank and fle of world leaders. "Reactonary and nhumane'' are colorful words, good for the speech wrter but not the careful scholar. And such undefned deeds. Conn says, have been dsplayed "throughout all he years of what s euphemstcally called hs publc servce." Here Conn has fallen nto an eltsm.screw the rubes that s antthetcal to democracy. Untl hs transton lo the presdency, Ford's actons on the House floor should have been those desred by hs Grand Rapds consttuency not an eastern elte. Hs conservatve votes apparently were, because he spent 25 years n the House, eght of them as Republcan leader. But Conn's fnal lament, (ant we do better than he presdent brought to us by Watergate." s the justfcaton for hs speakng to the Class of '75. That the untred gears worked, and Ford smoothly became he :»th Presdent, s a trbute to the flexblty of the Amercan poltcal system. Chrs Jennewen (Col.. 76) s a columnst for 34th Street Magazne. Ugrad Electons: Who s Who? By Tamar Ezekel When he prmary electons for the Undergraduate Assembly were held Monday, two tlngs happened. Frst, a record 25 percent of the elgble undergraduates turned out. and second, the top vote-getters n each consttuency was an ncumbent. On frst sghtng, the phrase "record 25 percent" seems nnocent enough, but after thnkng about t for a whle, t should bother most students that only a quarler of the student bodyturned out..some people are probably sayng rght now. "The students don't care. t's apathy," but don't agree wth that. beleve that the lack of turnout was caused by he Assembly tself. f you ddn't vote, ask yourself why Chances are that f you were aware of the electon's exstence whch some H'ople weren't. you ddn't know what was for exactly, or you ddn't know anythng about the canddates. jnkng at these reasons, one thng stands out: lack of publcty. The prmary source of nformaton about the electon's exstence and the pollng places was the DP f you happened lo mss t that day. you were nut of luck The purpose of the electon was even harder to fnd out The sgns sad the electon was for the Undergraduate Assembly, but the exact purpose Ol the electon and w hat he results would lead to was not explaned Lastly, and most mportant, there s the lack of knowledge about the ndvdual lldates Wh) should anyone take the lme and thought to vote when he-she has never beard of any of the canddates, Ths leads to the second SU Why were the top vote-getters n each consttuency ncumbents? Have the) all done sut-., good job that ted,. s there somethng else gong on? have to go wth the second, not to say that the ncumbents don't deserve to be reelected don't know), but don't beleve that ths s the ssue at hand. t goes back nstead to the lack of publcty The only nformaton about the canddates came from two sources campagn posters and the statements n the DP. thnk that campagn posters can be dscounted as a source of nformaton, snce the great majorty are of two basc types. The frst says. "'ve got experence. Fleet me," and He second says. "They haven't done anythng. Elect me " Nether of these provdes very much nformaton about the canddate The second source s a slght mprovement. The statements from the canddates al least provde a lttle nsght nto how the canddate thnks, bll these, too. do not gve enough nformaton about the canddates to make an ntellgent decson. So, the one student n four who decdes to vote arrves at the pollng place, knowng very lttle about any canddate unless t s hs frend, and has to cast a ballot The student looks at the ballot and recognzes a name here and there, normally an ncumbent. Naturally, havng recognzed a name, he wll vote for that person, so he can al least say that hs vole went for somebody who has ether dune somethng, or s someone he has met. Thus the ncumbents get reelected, and only those other students who have be nne well known some other way have any ll Assembly represents the actual thought Of about n enl of the student body, those who took nut only the tme to vote, but also made the actual, unreasonable :" U) learn about the undd.- Tanmr Ezrhcl sa freshman n C W

But n any event the weekend wll be hghlghted by the battle of the blazng saddles. And rghtfelder Partrdge and hs free-swngng mates are totally prepared to blow Holt rght off hs mount.
