Conspiracy Theories 1 - Andrew Johnson 2 - John Wilkes Booth 3 Confederate Plot 4 International Bankers 5 Roman Catholic Church 6 Sec. of War Edwin Stanton

THEORY #1 Andrew Johnson involved w/ Booth Booth went to Johnson s hotel 7 hours before shooting Left message at desk Don t wish to disturb you, Are you at Home? J Wilkes Booth Booth met Johnson in Feb. 1864, also proof while Johnson was Gov. of TN. He and Booth kept mistresses and were seen in public together Committee established; nothing suspicious found

THEORY #2 John Wilkes Booth acted alone Southern patriot who was mastermind and plotted early to kidnap Lincoln and use him to free southern prisoners When plot failed chose to seek revenge by assassination

THEORY #3 Confederate Plot Lincoln orders Col. Dahlgren to attack Richmond, who is killed with orders found to kill Davis and his cabinet Judah Benjamin (CSA Sec. of State) and Davis plotted to kill Lincoln. Benjamin burned all his records before Richmond was evacuated and escaped to England Documentation found on plans to blow up Whitehouse When plot failed, Booth could have taken it in his own hands Coded letters were found in Booth s trunk from Jefferson Davis

THEORY #4 International Bankers John Wilkes Booth is the hired gun because of his access to Lincoln Lincoln was offered loans at high interest rates to fund the war but he found alternatives to pay for war effort Loss of trade hurt British and French economies and the refusal to take loans crippled European economies

THEORY #5 Roman Catholic Church behind assassination In 1886 an ex-priest Charles Chiniquy wrote a book claiming that Papacy was directly behind assassination Chiniquy maintained that Jefferson Davis offered $1,000,000 if someone would kill Lincoln Catholic Church felt Lincoln s legal defense of a former Priest against the Bishop of Chicago This theory also gained steam after John C. Surratt (son of Mary Surratt) fled America and ended up in the Vatican

THEORY #6 Secretary of War Edwin Stanton mastermind behind assassination Stanton against Lincoln s mild reconstruction plan On the day of play, Grant was ordered by Stanton not to attend theatre ( Grants body guards would not let Booth enter) Stanton would not release Major Eckert who Lincoln requested him to be his body guard Does not alert Navy yard bridge ( Booth escape route)

THEORY #6 (cont.) Orders Booth to be killed on sight and not to be brought to trial Searched Home of Booth took personal diary and brought to tribunal pages were missing when it was documented into evidence Stanton was found to have stayed at Surratt s tavern on several occasions, possibly at the same time as Booth

Co-Conspirators Lewis Powell Attempted to assassinate Secretary of State William Seward, but only managed to injure him David Herold Accompanied Powell on his attempt to kill Seward, however he fled before the deed was finished George Atzerodt Supposed to kill Vice-President Johnson, never went through with attempt Eight other Conspirators were caught within days all were found guilty of varying crimes and sentences 1869 Mudd, Samuel Arnold, Michael O Laughlen, Edman Spengler all pardoned by Johnson

Other Interesting Facts Lincoln had a dream several days before the assassination that he had been killed. He told his secretary that he had seen himself in a casket at the White House. Boston Corbett (soldier who shot Booth) went berserk during Kansas State Legislature meeting was arrested, declared insane and sent to an Insane Asylum Henry Rathbone married Clara Harris in 1867, in 1883 he went berserk, killed his wife and tried to kill his kids, was sentenced to life in prison at an asylum for the criminally insane Mary Todd Lincoln 1875 was found insane at an insanity trial in Chicago spent time in an asylum

Other Interesting Facts Robert Lincoln Abe s son was in the White House when his father was shot in 1865 in 1881 Robert was with President Garfield at a RR station in Baltimore when Garfield was assassinated in 1901 Robert arrived at a Pan Am Exposition in Buffalo by train within minutes of President McKinley being shot An odd story broke in newspaper in St. Joseph, MN News broke that the President had been shot and killed on the morning of April 14 th when in reality he wasn t shot until that night no one knows how the info got to the newspaper
