2016 Seminar for New Mission Presidents Testimonies of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles June 25, 2016 Elder D. Todd Christofferson I want to add my thanks with yours to President and Sister Burgess and the mission presidency here at the MTC, the Missionary Executive Council, all of the staff, the directors, the in-field representatives, and everyone else who has helped in any and every way to make this experience possible. I for one am deeply grateful to them and to this missionary choir that has sung to us each day. When I have occasion to meet with missionaries in zone conferences or mission conferences from time to time, I sometimes say to them that we regard them as companions our companions, companions of the Apostles because they are called to serve by the senior Apostle, the President of the Church. They are assigned to a mission by an Apostle. They are set apart under keys and authority that are delegated from the Apostles. They are helping us fulfill the great commission given to the Apostles to take the gospel to all the world, baptizing in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost. 1 I sometimes remind them that that great commission to the Twelve was renewed in this dispensation in these words in section 112 of the Doctrine and Covenants: Purify your hearts before me; and then go ye into all the world, and preach my gospel unto every creature who has not received it; and he that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. 2 So all of that is ultimately an apostolic responsibility, and the missionaries are fulfilling it with us. We see them as standing shoulder to shoulder with us, and we re proud to be their companions. And if that s true for the missionaries that you direct and lead, it s even more so with you. We do see you as our companions. We hope you ll always be proud of us as companions and we of you and labor side by side under the apostolic keys in this great commission that have been given in this dispensation along with those prior. In that vein, I bear witness of your calling. I ve seen the process, participated in it directly with my Brethren, and know of the source and the origin of your call, both presidents and companions. And I want to stand today as a witness of your call through that apostolic authority and the fact that you stand where you stand and will serve where you serve with ultimate authority and right, with the privileges the Lord gives you as His emissaries. And I bear witness of the Prophet Joseph Smith, whom I love dearly and through whom we have the blessings we enjoy. Because of his labor, his sacrifices, his faithfulness, his fidelity to the very end, we are here. And while he didn t go where you re going (in almost every case), because of his labor we can go where we go. I honor him, perhaps more than anything else, for the Book of Mormon that we have because of his service and because of the gift and power of God granted to him.

I thrill again just remembering the clarion call, the clarion message of this seminar delivered by President Russell M. Nelson at the beginning. I bear witness with him of the truth of the Book of Mormon and its great converting power and testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ. We carry both a message and a witness concerning Him. The message is that He is the Redeemer, that He died for our sins, that He rose again, that He fulfilled all the requirements of an infinite Atonement. That is our message. And our witness is that He lives today and that He directs this His work. I bear witness of our Heavenly Father, who is the originator of everything we teach the whole plan of salvation that we are commissioned to carry forward. Of all these truths I join my testimony with yours, and happily, gratefully, and humbly bear witness in the name of Jesus Christ, amen. Elder Quentin L. Cook I have loved this entire seminar. As much as the individual notes played and the individual talks given are so worthy of being spoken of, I hope you ll appreciate the symphony, the balance, between all of the messages, and that you can successfully take that to your missionaries. It has been a real joy to sit next to Elder Jeffrey R. Holland. The two of us, as young men, were missionary companions together; and to sit side by side for three days and be here and look out at you, and think how seminal to our lives a mission president was, how utterly blessed we were because of that mission, is part of a realization of how significant you can be in the lives of your missionaries. There were three things in Preach My Gospel that I would like to mention just quickly that were originated by President Gordon B. Hinckley. The first one was he asked us to include all the doctrine that had been taught from the past. Early on, dispensations were taught, but there had come a point when the main emphasis was on the Prophet Joseph and the First Vision. It s very important that we see Joseph Smith in that role, which is true, but we also need to see him as the foreordained prophet of this dispensation and the majesty that represents. The missionaries, both on their missions and later, will see the Prophet attacked. Instilling in them a love and appreciation for the Prophet Joseph is essential. One aspect of the Atonement is taught in Preach My Gospel in a way that isn t usually taught. There it speaks of the Atonement covering all of the unfairness of life. When you and your missionaries are teaching investigators about the premortal existence and that agency will allow terrible things to happen, to see the Atonement as overcoming all of the unfairness of life will bless your missionaries and the investigators. Now, by way of testimony, I want you and them to know that we receive revelation and guidance today at the senior leadership level of the Church. Please assure your missionaries of that. Whenever it s necessary for the Lord s work to receive inspiration and guidance, we receive it. I testify to you, as each one of us can, that this happens. The experiences are often too sacred to share, but I bear a sure witness to you of the divinity of Jesus Christ, and I do so in the sacred name of Jesus Christ, amen. Elder Jeffrey R. Holland I wish to bear witness of two crucial days in the history of mortality two days that matter more in eternity than any two mortal days of which I know. The first and most important was a moment in a dusty, dim, dingy outpost in the Roman Empire a place to which no soldier wanted to be assigned, and if you were assigned there, you couldn t wait to leave. These Romans were ruling over a little group of headstrong religionists who had no political power and no 2016 Seminar for New Mission Presidents 2

military force but who were always somehow stirring up trouble. It was a pain to worry about Judea. With Roman effort and local collusion, it was decided that a new troublemaker should be put to death just another day at the office for the Romans, a particular victory for the local folks. I testify of that lonely mission of the Lord Jesus Christ, which culminated in a night in Gethsemane, a kangaroo court and farce of a trial the next day, and the carrying of a cross to the summit of Golgotha for His own execution when it was obvious there was no other cup from which He could drink. Not very many people are recorded as being there perhaps only two other prisoners being executed on either side of Him, a band of faithful women, one Apostle, and at least one Roman centurion who probably didn t want to be there. But having watched the effect this man had on the crowd and seeing the impact of the events of the day which culminated in a violent earthquake, the sun going dark from noon to three o clock, and reports of the veil of the temple being rent this soldier turned to no one in particular and said, Truly this was the Son of God. 3 It is interesting to me that the most explicit testimony that we have in the New Testament from that Crucifixion moment came from a pagan Roman soldier. I testify that Jesus was and is and ever will be the Son of God and the Savior of the world, in the most important day and in the loneliest journey ever made in mortality. The second most important day in mortality was also experienced alone, even if the principal figure was not quite as lonely. I speak of the day (or days) that a 14-year-old came home from a Methodist Sunday School and pulled the family Bible off the shelf to read and think about the text of the day. It was the first chapter of the book of James, the fifth verse. Young Joseph realized that if anyone lacked wisdom, he did. Later he said, Never did any passage of scripture come with more power to the heart of man than this did at this time to mine. 4 He determined to put that verse to the test. What then followed a short walk into a wood near the house, probably crossing a split-rail fence to get there introduced the greatest epiphany since the Resurrection of Jesus Christ and the second most important day in human history, the day that would put the effects of the first day the death, Atonement, and Resurrection of Jesus Christ into the universal reach of all humankind, all the living and all the dead from every earlier dispensation. The appearance of the Father and the Son started the latter-day work that would give ultimate meaning to the great plan of salvation. No significant saving work to any degree was done until this dispensation. We had fits and starts and bursts and moments. We had a little there, and a little here some missionary work that was never successful for very many people, and a very, very modest amount of temple work, with almost no temples in which to do it until that divine experience in the spring of 1820 in Palmyra, New York. Presidents and companions, I testify of what you re doing. I testify that you are putting into force the Atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ, the fulness of which could not be realized until this dispensation, when missionary work would be real missionary work to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people, when temple work would be for all the living and all the dead, with temples built among every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. I m not sure why you and I have the privilege of seeing the full gospel plan implemented and realized. I m not sure that we are any better than Peter, James, and John were, or Mormon and Moroni were, or Alma and Amulek were, or Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel were. I am sure we aren t better, but we have a richer and deeper opportunity than they had. We have the dispensation of the fulness of times. We have the full impact and effect of the Atonement of the Lord Jesus Christ, the full plan of salvation at work in mortality. I don t know what you did and I surely don t know what I did to deserve to be born in this time to be part of carrying out that work, but I testify it is the most significant thing we could ever do in time or eternity and that we re humbled and burdened and blessed by the responsibility Seminar for New Mission Presidents 3

I leave my testimony and blessing with you and on you that you will succeed. We pray you will. We fast with you and devote our every effort to support you in this great, final, culminating success of all that life was to mean in a plan conceived from before the foundation of the world. Welcome to the work. It is God s truth. I testify from the depth of my soul this is God s truth. We are not participating in a cunningly devised fable, to use Peter s memorable phrase. 5 I testify of this truth in the name of Jesus Christ, amen. Elder Robert D. Hales I am so happy and delighted that I can be here today with my sweetheart, because when we come here, we know that the best time that we ever spent in our 63 years of marriage was as mission president and companion. She always said, If only I could go back to when we were on a mission together. You will be allowed to fulfill a mission that, believe it or not, you ve prepared for and were prepared for probably from before your first mission, for many, but also when your angel came to be by your side. If you ll go back and review your life, you ve been preparing. You could not come on this mission unless you had prepared for it and knew you wanted to be here. That s why the Lord knows and that s why the prophets know that you re ready. You re going to live, for one time in your life as a companionship, the law of consecration, giving all of your time, talents, and gifts. Everything that you have, you lay before the Lord. To do that, you have a mission. In that consecration, you will pray and ask for the Spirit to be with you; and what you will develop is a spiritual environment much like an incubator for a baby that elders and sisters can grow in, where the Spirit thrives, where you become closer to the Lord. You will read the scriptures. You will see them more clearly. You will teach them with more power and more spirit than you ever have in your whole life. You will be able to interview elders and sisters. You will be able to place them in the right places in the mission with the right companions. You will be able, through the Spirit, to ask for safety to be brought down on them. You will have the opportunity to pray to your Heavenly Father as a companionship and with your missionaries. I ask for the Lord s blessings to be with you, that you may have the opportunity more than anything else to know who you are, why you are here, and what you are going to accomplish. May the Lord s blessings attend you. I give you my testimony. I know that God lives. I know that Jesus is the Christ. I know that the Holy Ghost is the third member of the Godhead and was allowed to be among us by God the Father and Jesus Christ, His eldest Son, so that we could be guided, protected, and given peace and calming. When things look very difficult, I ask for the Lord s blessings to be with you, that you may have answers to your prayers and the desires of your heart. In the name of Jesus Christ, amen. Elder M. Russell Ballard It is always an honor to sit next to Elder Robert D. Hales and be able to feel his great spirit. As I ve looked into your faces and the face of my sweet wife, Barbara I hate to tell you, dear, but we have attended more seminars for new mission presidents than anybody in this room. We started out in 1974 at the new mission presidents seminar, which was nothing like what we have just experienced. I would like to commend Elder Dallin H. Oaks, his associates in the Missionary Department, the staff, and all who have prepared what I believe is one of the finest seminars for new mission presidents we ve ever had. I have a testimony that revelation from our Heavenly Father made it possible for us to have the wonderful manual Preach My Gospel. Elder Quentin L. Cook and 2016 Seminar for New Mission Presidents 4

I witnessed time after time the hand of the Lord, the Spirit of heaven that came as we needed it. Preach My Gospel speaks to the missionaries. It tells them how they can develop the attributes and the spirit and the power to be effective missionaries wherever they are called to serve in the world. It is my testimony that it is very important for you to get your missionaries to understand the things you have learned here today. Missionaries need to be where the people are. They need to find out where the people are so they can mingle among them and be able to share what we have learned, which has been beautifully taught at the seminar. Missionaries need to have the courage to work hard. You will instill the courage in them to find and find and find and teach and teach and teach. And as they do this, the Lord will bless them, and many will come into the Church. May the Lord bless you, presidents, and your dear wives. May this be everything that it can be for you. May you have health and strength. May you be safe in your travels. May you be inspired. May revelation flow from our Father and through the Lord Jesus Christ to you, that you will accomplish all that you desire to accomplish and have the satisfaction of knowing, when your mission is over, that you have done the very best that you knew how so you can enjoy the rest of your life loving your missionaries, as they will love you. I humbly testify of missionary work and leave my witness that Jesus is the Christ. He is the Son of God. We are all on His errand. May He bless us I humbly pray in His sacred and holy name, even Jesus Christ, amen. President Russell M. Nelson Well, my beloved presidents and sisters, you ve now heard from all the Twelve Apostles. You ve heard from the seven Presidents of the Seventy. You ve heard from many others of the Seventy. You ve heard from the Presiding Bishopric. You ve heard from one another, all 342 of you. I have tried to think of one scripture I could leave with you that represents each and every one of us, from the General Authorities on down to every mission president. Would you make a note of this reference: 3 Nephi 5:13? I want you to copy it, put it on your refrigerator door, and teach it every time you are with your missionaries: Behold, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have been called of him to declare his word among his people, that they might have everlasting life. We call that eternal life. You teach and bear testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ as the Son of God, as the Anointed One of the Father who was given titles of the Christ and the Messiah to indicate He was anointed. He, under the direction of the Father, was the Creator of this and other worlds. He is our Advocate with the Father. He is the Emmanuel and Jehovah of Old Testament times. He is our Savior and our Redeemer. He set an example for us. He taught us how to live, how to love, how to focus on the ordinances, how to pray, what to know, and how to endure to the end. Help your missionaries to understand that He will one day be our judge and the judge of every human being ever created and that one day, He will stand as our millennial Messiah to rule and reign as King of kings and Lord of lords. He is Jesus the Christ, our Master, and more. Of Him I bear our testimony my testimony and your testimony in the sacred name of Jesus Christ, amen. Notes 1.
