4 BIBLICAL RECORDER January 20, 1926, page 6 REV. JOHN LEWIS FALLS ON SLEEP The sad news comes that Rev. John Lewis died at his home in Southern Pines on Saturday, January 2. He was stricken with paralysis on Monday, December 28, and retained consciousness until Thursday when he became unconscious and passed quietly away on Saturday. For several years Brother Lewis had been a sufferer from high blood pressure, and the physicians could not succeed in bringing the pressure down. He knew that he was in danger of being stricken down at any time, but he made a brave fight, and by marvelous self-control as to diet and by taking care of himself, lived for a much longer time than he or his friends at one time thought it possible for him to do. But when the summons came he was ready. Brother Lewis was a native of Wales, and came to this country several years ago. He was pastor of the church at Clayton and at Southern Pines. At the latter place his health broke down, and his physicians ordered him to refrain from preaching, or engaging in anything that would be a tax on his nervous system. He engaged in business at Southern Pines, and was a successful merchant, giving honest weights and good measure. Owing to still further failure in health he was compelled to retire from business and wait for the summons of his Master. Brother Lewis was a man of broad information and ripe scholarship. good preacher and sympathetic pastor. He was a He was deeply interested in the work of the denomination, and rejoiced at all news of the progress of the Kingdom. It is a real grief to this writer to know that his good friend has gone on the "long journey. " scrib e. Brother Lewis showed deep concern about the health of this He wrote occasionally urging the writer to take care of himself, and suggest- ing methods for doing so. Through these letters, one of which we received not long since, ran a note of affection which we greatly appreciated. He will be held in grateful remembrance by this writer, who feels that in the death of John Lewis he has lost a dear friend. He was devoted to the work of the Lord, had an unwaver- ing fai t h in the Bible as God ' s inspired book, and loved his Lord and his fellow men. He has heard the "Well Done " of his Master on the other side of the dark River!

6 RESOLUTIONS OF RESPECT On January 2nd, 1926, Rev. John Lewis was called to his eternal rest. He was born in St. Clears, South Wales, October 14, He came to Nova Scotia Finding the climate too severe there, ca.me south in His first pastorate was at Morehead City, from there he ca.me to Clayton, where he did gr eat work with the help of his ever faithful wife. From there he came to Southern Pines and was pastor there and Aberdeen for a few months. We found in Brother Lewis a faithful pastor, firm in the faith and true to his convictions of right and wrong. After leaving us he went to Virginia for a few years, returning to Southern Pines and was pastor there for about three years. He gave up the pastorat e and went into business, he was greatly loved and respected, honest in his dealings with his fellowman. will. In his death we have lost one of our best members of Aberdeen Baptist Church. Therefore be it resolved : First, That we deeply regret the loss of so good a brother but we bow to God ' s Second, And to his wife who was so thoughtful of his every need we extend our deepest sympathy.
