3 childhood, the others, are useful and honored members of society. Some twelve years since, she was joined in marriage with father COX, with whom she lived till removed by death, leaving him again to feel his loneliness and desolation. The old people lived among us and kept house till last fall, when they moved to her son's to suffer on a short time and then pass away. She united with the M. E. Church in Jefferson, some eleven years since, remaining a worthy member until she went triumphantly home, to join the glorified hosts of God's elect in heaven. She was a great sufferer here for several years, but when the angel came, she only lingered in the tottering tenment a few hours, when it fell, and the soul unfettered, plumed its wings and bathing them in eternal light, soared to the celestial city. She was indeed a mother in Israel. She is gone, but she lives in the affections and the memory of her family and friends. All that was mortal of her was followed to the cemetery by a large company of citizens. Burial services were conducted by Father PARRISH and Brother JUDKINS of the M. E. Church. May the loving arms of Jesus encircle her aged companion and children in their hour of bereavement, and may we all follow her up to the cloudless land. B. N. Arriving in Illinois, he engaged in various enterprises, among them the operation of a saw mill. He married Nancy Gunsaules 28 February 1839, in Knox County, Illinois, and they eventually had 10 children. May 4, 1848 he and his wife left St. Joseph. Missouri, to cross the plains to Oregon, bringing with them besides their household possessions, several yoke of oxen, two cows and two steers. They were in a company made up of 13 wagons, the last company that made the trek in When they arrived in Oregon, they purchased land and settled in Linn County, near Scio. The following year, Cosner took up a claim of 320 acres and bought another 320 at Santiam City, a site which now lies under the Santiam River about 2 miles downstream from Jefferson. At Santaim City he was a partner with Mr. Evans, in a gristmill on the north side of the river in Marion County. He was also the postmaster of Syracuse, a community on the south side of the Santiam River just opposite Santiam City. After the flood in 1851, he left Santiam City and took up a claim upstream between Mr. Bates and Mr. Holt amd started his own community, now called Jefferson. Jefferson, known first as Conser's Ferry, is really considered to have started because pf Conser's vision of the future, as well as his understanding of the river by which he chose to live. Jacob Conser was a practical and shrewd man. He moved when he saw that Santiam City was eventually to wash out, and then did everything possible to draw other settlers to the new community; built his ferry in 1851, started a hotel. built mills, arranged to have an educational center there, and then platted the town and sold lots to reap the harvest. The Conser House was built in 1854, five years before Oregon became a state, as Conser's home and a hotel. It appears he was still serving as postmaster at Santiam City in the summer of In 1853 he started a sawmill in Jefferson, later erecting a flour and gristmill. He, with his partner, Burnett, added to the mill until in 1870 it has a capital of $25,000. About 1868 or '70 Conser built near the ferry landing a three-story residence which at that time was the finest home in the country. Active politically, Conser was elected to the first Territorial Legislator Linn County in 1849, and for Marion County in the special session of 1852, and was elected again in In 1859 he was sent to the first state convention in Eugene. He was a judge in Marion County, and active in the Democratic party. Conser was one of the first board of trustees of Willamette University and was a director in the Oregon Central Railroad. His wife, Nancy, died at Walla Walla, Washington, April 18, In 1881 Conser married Mrs. Elizabeth Humphrey, widow of Norris Humphrey who had been on the same pioneer trek with Conser. In 1885 Conser retired and moved to Eugene, where he died March 18, He is buried at Jefferson Cemetery. Obituary CONSER, Jacob

Looney (on marker w/jesse W. Looney) "Mrs. J. W. LOONEY died at the home of her son in this city at 6:30 Monday evening, aged 67 years, 1 month and 5 days, the cause of her death being paralysis. Mary Ann Gunsaules was born in Knox County, Illinois, coming to Jefferson when 11 years of age, and has resided in this vicinity continuously since. She was married to J. W. LOONEY in They were a most devoted couple, and during their long married life it is said were separated but 10 days prior to Mr. LOONEY's death on Dec 25th last. "Aunt Mary," as she was affectionately called by our people, was loved by all and sincere sorrow is felt at her death; yet we would not, if we could, call her back, for since the death of the loved husband she appeared to lose interest in life--she was lonesome--the companion who had shared her joys and sorrows from girlhood to old age was gone, and all was desolate, and she gladly went to join the loved one beyond the mystic river, to part no more forever. Her life was filled with kind and loving acts, and she has gone to beyond the reward therefore.

22 Three sons, F. E. (Fred), W. J. (Walton Jesse) and W. F. (Frank), all of Jefferson survive her, one son preceded the parents to the other shore. The funeral ceremonies were held Wednesday afternoon, the discourse being delivered at the M. E. Church by Rev. G.O. OLIVER. The large concourse of people assembled proved the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The remains were laid in the city cemetery besides of the husband. True, faithful and loving in life, in death they were not long divided. May they sleep sweetly until the resurrection morn." He had been ill for but a few days, and the announcement of his death was a sad surprise. Mr. LOONEY came to Jefferson with his parents in 1843, settling at Looney Butte, and has resided here continually since that time. Having acquired a competency by farming, a few years ago he purchased a home in this city, where he has since lived quietly, ever willing with the generosity of the true pioneer to extend a helping to a needy neighbor. No one of our citizens would have been more missed. He leaves a wife, 3 sons, 4 brothers and 4 sisters, all prominent in the affairs of the state and county. The funeral services were held at the M. E. Church at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, that edifice being crowded with friends of the deceased, many being unable to gain admission. The funeral sermon was delivered by Rev. G.O. OLIVER, of Turner. The remains were laid in the Jefferson Cemetery, the grave being covered with a profusion of beautiful floral tributes, beneath which, within view of the home where he passed along and the useful life, he will sleep until the last great morn.
