7 Intrductin The Bishp s Annual Appeal is ur pprtunity, as a peple f ne faith, t supprt the wrk f the Cathlic Church in Eastern Nrth Carlina. The services prvided and ministries supprted by the BAA are realized in EVERY parish and missin in ur Dicese. There are many needs beynd ur parishes capacity t serve. The Dicese helps t meet these needs thrugh the ministries f the Bishp s Annual Appeal. The 2018 Bishp s Annual Appeal will be cnducted by 95 parishes/missins and raises funds fr 30 ministries f charity, wrship and evangelizatin in the Dicese f Raleigh. The services that the Dicese prvides reflect ur belief in the sanctity f human life, the dignity f the individual, and the central rle f the family in life and sciety. As a result, the agencies, institutins and prgrams funded by the Bishp s Annual Appeal serve all f Gd s peple, withut regard t religin, race, age, handicap r financial status. 11 Lcal Parish CAMPAIGNS and Guaranteed Gals If a Parish is cnducting an appeal fr which pledges can be paid ver a perid f mnths r years, it must guarantee the Bishp s Annual Appeal gal fr each year f the active slicitatin and the year fllwing the cnclusin f active slicitatin. There are tw ptins fr fulfilling the guaranteed gal: 1. Cnduct the Bishp s Annual Appeal as usual alng with all ther parishes. This is strngly recmmended. The Parish can raise as much as it can tward its BAA gal. There may be numerus parishiners wh may nt supprt a parish capital appeal, but will supprt the BAA. This als maintains annual educatin f the services prvided by the BAA ministries. 2. Prmte and incrprate the Bishp s Annual Appeal gal and message int yur capital appeal. This ptin can nly be chsen fr the first year f the appeal. It is imprtant t cmmunicate t all parishiners that part f the funds frm a lcal appeal will g t supprt the parish s Bishp s Annual Appeal gal. Thus, the parish needs t include the appeal infrmatin in its case material. With this ptin, the parish must submit appeal case materials fr review t the Office f Stewardship and Advancement fr the first year f the lcal appeal. 10

12 Preparing fr a Successful Appeal The key t the success f the Bishp's Annual Appeal is strngly dependent upn the enthusiastic and active leadership f the Pastr r the Pastral Administratr in the parish. N prgram can succeed withut their leadership, invlvement and supprt. Parishiners will nly rise t the level f sacrifice and stewardship as inspired by their Pastral leaders. Rle f Pastral Leaders Pastral leaders are encuraged t cmmunicate that all gifts cme frm the Lrd and the BAA prvides us all with an pprtunity t share ur gifts f time, talent and treasure, t help thse in need, and t strengthen ur Dicese. In additin t prviding spiritual mtivatin and leadership, the Pastral leader shuld: 1. Appint BAA leadership and vlunteers: General Chair, Majr Gift Chair, Hispanic Cmmunity Chair (if applicable) and Administrative vlunteer/staff. 2. Make the first gift t the BAA in the parish t set an example. 3. Review and design a plan fr yur parish based n the Milestne Dates which shws a sample calendar f weekly events (fund n Page 14). 4. Mnitr the parish s prgress during the appeal. 5. Verify all parishiners have been prvided an pprtunity t participate in the appeal. 6. Attend ne f the seven BAA trainings being held thrughut the Dicese in December Attend ne f the eight BAA Kickff Dinners being held thrughut the Dicese in January

13 Rle f BAA Chairs Strng, active and enthusiastic lay leaders will help cnduct a successful appeal. The psitins f General Chair, Hispanic Cmmunity Chair and Majr Gifts Chair require dedicatin and a strng willingness t wrk n behalf f the ministries f the Bishp s Annual Appeal. Chair respnsibilities: 1. Supprt the BAA by making a gift t set an example. 2. Ask all vlunteers t make gifts prir t the slicitatin f gifts frm ther parishiners. 3. Assist the Pastr r Pastral Administratrs in identifying, planning and carrying ut the mst effective methds f requesting supprt frm the parish cmmunity. 4. Understand hw the BAA ministries benefit the parish and cmmunity. 5. Enlist leaders and vlunteers t carry ut the methds f slicitatin. 6. Instruct, assist and mnitr all vlunteers in use f prmtinal materials. 7. Prvide psitive leadership thrughut the appeal, instilling cnfidence and enthusiasm. 8. Visit with r make persnal phne calls t majr gift dnrs (Majr Gift Chair and team). 9. Oversee the prcessing f transmittal frms - all transmittal frms shuld be reviewed befre submissin (General Chair and/r vlunteer). 10. Cmpile weekly updates n pledge ttals (General Chair). 11. Assist in determining apprpriate fllw-up actins t ensure that all have been given the pprtunity t participate in the BAA. 12. 15 Additinal Ideas: Invite a ministry speaker t share the imprtance f the BAA at Mass (i.e. Cathlic Charities). Pastr sits in the pew with parishiners t fill ut the in-pew envelpe/make a pledge. Place envelpes in the basket during the BAA in pew cllectin s they d nt appear empty t start. Place pledge statins in the back f the Church fr parishiners t make pledges n their way ut (Dicese can prvide yu with a set f persnalized pledge cards) Ask vlunteers t make phne calls t nn-dnrs. During Mass, the Pastr reads thrugh a list f ministries supprted by the BAA, asking thse wh have been affected by thse ministries t stand. By the end f the list, mst f the peple in the Church shuld be standing. Print a cpy f the pledge card in the bulletin the week befre Bishp s letter mails and explain hw t make a pledge and cmplete the card. Appeal Materials 1. Psters: Main appeal pster, gal pster, thank yu pster t be displayed at parish and schl facilities (Bilingual) 2. BAA Brchure: The brchure prepared by the Dicese will be mailed t all registered husehlds with a persnalized letter alng with a pledge card and a return envelpe. If we have a recrd f yur parishiners wishing t receive materials in Spanish, we will be sure t send the Spanish versin f the packet. Since many Spanish speaking parishiners are nt registered and wuld nt receive a mailing, additinal Spanish language brchures are delivered directly t the parishes fr distributin at all Spanish masses. Parishes will need t request these brchures n their Materials Reservatin Frms. 3. Pastr Letter: The Dicese will prcess and send these letters ut fr yu if yu wuld like t send them during the recmmended timeline. The mailing will persnalize letters frm Pastrs and Pastral Administratrs t parishiners thanking them fr previus cntributins and reiterate the slicitatin and BAA message included in the January mailing. The Dicese prvides a sample fllw up letter frm the Pastr in this manual. (Appendix A) 4. Additinal Pastr Letter: If a parish wuld like t send a letter at anther time r additinal letters, they are certainly welcme t d s. The Dicesan ffice will assist if they are able t, but the cst fr the mailing wuld fall t the parish. 14

16 5. BAA Vides: There is ne main vide in English and Spanish. We encurage yu t use the vide in yur BAA plan either the week f the first in-pew cllectin r the week prir. 6. Bulletin Ads: Advertisements used t prmte the BAA. (Appendix C) 2018 Bishp s Annual Appeal at Yur Parish The Appeal cnsists f several cmpnents which are cnducted in the fllwing sequence: 1. Majr Dnrs Visits A majr gift is generally defined as a pledge f $1,000 r mre. Hwever, this amunt varies by parish. Each parish shuld define their wn level. The Pastr, Pastral Administratr, BAA Chairs and/r vlunteers are encuraged t have persnal cntact with the majr dnr befre the cmmencement f the In-Pew slicitatins t encurage early participatin. Giving is a persnal act. Appraching a dnr in the mst persnal methd pssible is always encuraged (in persn visit, phne, , then mail as ptins). Preparatin Take time t pray. Remember yu are asking fr help t bring Christ s wrk t ur Dicese. Be ready and mtivated. Knw enugh abut the persn yu are visiting that yu can enjy a cmfrtable cnversatin. Familiarize yurself with the BAA ministries and be prepared t explain hw gifts will help thse in need and supprt Christ s wrk in the Dicese. Bring a BAA brchure and pledge card with yu n the visit. Requesting the Appintment Call t request an appintment with the parishiner at hme t speak abut the Bishp Annual Appeal and the ministries it supprts. Request abut minutes f time. Visiting Intrduce yurself and express appreciatin fr taking time t meet. Begin with casual cnversatin. Ask what they knw abut the Bishp s Annual Appeal. Thank them fr their previus supprt. Explain the parish s rle in the appeal and hw the gals are set. Share with them sme f the wrk dne with Bishp s Annual Appeal funds (yu might cnsider using the brchure). Share a few f yur persnal reasns fr supprting the BAA. Ask if they have any questins. 15

17 Requesting a gift Mentin that all parishiners are asked fr a sacrificial gift t the measure f which we are blessed. It may be helpful fr their cnsideratin t knw that they can make a pledge and pay it ver several mnths. Invite the persn t make a gift t the BAA. Fr example: Nw that yu are familiar with the imprtant wrk the Bishp s Annual Appeal supprts, I wuld like t invite yu t make a gift. Will yu supprt this imprtant wrk? Remember t be respectful f their decisin and their time. Allw the persn time t cnsider yur request. Be patient, answer any questins and wait fr a respnse. Pssible answers and respnses: Yes, I will make a gift. Thank them fr their genersity and ask the dnr t cmplete the pledge card (r cmplete the card fr them) and have them sign it. Yes, I am interested in supprting the BAA, but I need mre time t think abut it. Thank them fr cnsidering a gift, prvide them with a BAA brchure, and ffer t fllw up within seven days. Thank them fr their time and ffer t answer any mre questins befre yu leave. I am srry, but I cannt supprt the appeal nw. Thank them fr their time; tell them yu wuld like t leave a brchure; ask fr their supprt fr the BAA thrugh prayer. Fllwing up If the dnr is thinking abut their gift, set a specific date and time t fllw up n yur visit within seven days. If the dnr made a gift r pledge, reprt the gift infrmatin t yur BAA General Chair. 2. Majr Gift Dnr Events Yu culd cnsider hsting a dinner r receptin in February fr Majr Gift Dnrs and Prspects. Persnalized Letter and Brchure Mailing in January T reach ut t prspective dnrs in a mre persnal manner, the brchure mailing will include a persnalized letter that asks fr a gift, alng with a custmized pledge card (with specific gift amunts) and return envelpe. The gift amunt is persnalized based n each parishiner giving histry/capability. A duplicate cpy f this pledge card and a list f each registered parishiner can be sent t each parish. There is an ptin t rder a set f duplicate pledge cards n the materials rder frm. 5. Pastr Letter A letter signed by the Pastr r Pastral Administratr can be mailed by the Dicese. The parish asks the dnrs t submit mnthly payments t the parish until the entire amunt is paid. The parish then submits the gifts in the nrmal prcedure. 3. Cmmunity gift: Parish makes a pledge fr the Hispanic Cmmunity and takes up cllectins thrughut the year and submits payments tward the amunt pledged.
