1 Volume 1 Issue 1 March 2016 President s Message We at the society hope all had a good winter. For sure, we can t complain about the weather. No super snow storm, compared to Hear ye! Hear ye! Great News! Newsletter We are now connected to the internet. Thank goodness! We have free WIFI for use for paid researchers and our members on your devices. I would like to thank the Board of Directors for their support in making this happen. Second Annual Craft Fair We are currently in the process of setting things in motion for this event. We are looking at a new location: It is handicapped accessible and no flights of stairs to climb. There is plenty of parking in front of the building and it is located on a main highway. There will be more floor space available to vendors which will allow for more vendors than last year. We will hold this event sometime in early November. Stay tuned. Other News We would like to work with other local historical societies to generate more interest in local history. This newsletter offers you a look at Brooklyn Historical. We have added a page to the newsletter for a renewal form and an extra form that you may share with a friend or family member who would like to become a member of our society. 2 Brooklyn Historical Society News We hope that you will join us on Thursday, May 19th at 7:30 p.m. at Brooklyn s Trinity Episcopal Church Parish Hall, located at 7 Providence Road (Route 6), as we meet the 26th President of the United States. The very talented actor, author, and historian Ted Zalewski will present Teddy Roosevelt: Mind, Body and Spirit. Ted has performed for museums, historic sites, colleges and historical societies across the country. The program is free and concludes with a social hour when you will have an opportunity to talk to Mr. Zalewski. On May 25th and May 29th, the Brooklyn Historical Society Museum, as well as the Daniel Putnam Tyler Law Office will open for the 2016 season. Our Special Exhibit Gallery will feature the exhibit More Vintage Views of Brooklyn which uses copies of photographs and postcards from 19th and early 20th century Brooklyn to illuminate the town s past. We are excited to announce that the permanent General Putnam Gallery will display for the first time the original wolf heads designed by Karl Gerhardt for the General Israel Putnam Statue. The Gerhardt wolf heads were stolen in 1984 and 1985, but they have been found and returned to us. Plan to visit us and learn more about this story of thievery and restitution. Open Wednesday and Sundays 1pm to 5pm until October 9th. Or by appointment Admission is free Calling All Civil War Buffs On Saturday May 7th at 1:30 we will be hosting a Civil War program. Buck Zaidel will present a power point program relating to a book he co-authored with Dione Longley, Heroes For All Time / Connecticut Civil War Soldiers Tell Their Stories. The book presents the war straight from the minds and pens of its participants: soldiers letters, diaries and written accounts by nurses, doctors, soldiers families, and volunteers on the home front to vividly portray the war through their moving stories. After the program there will be time to ask questions and refreshments will be served. Please plan on joining us for an exciting Civil War program. Election of Officers Election of officers and board members will be at our annual meeting on Saturday, May 7th 2016 at 1PM. 3 PRESERVATION TIPS FOR MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS Avoid putting high pressure on stringed instruments including pianos. Do not make sudden changes to string tension. Pianos should be moved by professionals. Brass instruments should not be handled with bare hands or polished. All instruments should be stored in 50% relative humidity. If you play woodbore wind instruments, warm them up and always clear the moisture from them immediately after playing. Do not polish or oil a wooden instrument.
