09 Book of Mormon Podcast by Mike Stroud 1 Nephi (Transcribed by Carol Crisp) Chapter 15 starts out with a discussion between Nephi and his brethren, as usual. They're complaining and disputing one with another, concerning 'the things my father had saw'. The brothers asked Nephi... Vs. 3: For he truly spake many great things unto them, which were hard to be understood, save a man should inquire of the Lord; and they being hard in their hearts, therefore they did not look unto the Lord as they ought. All through these next verses we see the use of these words: hardness of their hearts. That's an interesting thing because in our day, after the shedding of blood and sacrifice of animals has been done away, the sacrifice the Lord requires for us is a broken heart and a contrite spirit. I think that 'hard heart' up there is because they refused to ask God for anything. They just won't do it. When Nephi ask them, down in vs. 8, 'have you inquired of the Lord concerning these things?', they simply say in vs. 9, we haven't, because 'he doesn't tell us those things. He doesn't speak to us'. I read this week in the Bible Dictionary under prayer where it says that there are many blessings that the Lord is willing and already to give us, but they are conditioned on asking. If you don't ask, you just can't have those blessings. They're just not available to you. Yesterday Sis. Stroud and I were talking about an interesting little thing. It was about how your own mind is always asking you questions. It's a questioning thing. We had a thought that it's meant to be that way. Your mind is designed to ask questions, because the Holy Spirit doesn't give directions, unless there are questions asked. So, if you are being guided continually by the Holy Spirit, which we are, every person, then what a neat design it is to have part of your makeup that your mind is continually asking questions to fulfill the condition of giving answers. If there are no questions asked, there can be no answers. Since your mind is continually asking questions, and since the Holy Spirit is with us all the time, giving direction, those two fit together. It's almost like if your mind wasn't always asking questions, could the Holy Spirit function at all, or at least to the degree that it does, if it wasn't a part of your makeup to have a mind that's continually inquiring? That was an interesting little thought that we hit on yesterday and thought what a neat plan to design you, with a part of your mind, in the telestial world, that is always asking questions. If that's a law that you have to ask questions in order to receive instructions, and that's what the Bible Dictionary says, those blessings and directions and revelations are there, but they're conditioned on you asking questions, then look how those two fit together. The mind of man always enquiring, and the Holy Spirit always directing and waiting. We thought that was a neat thing on how that fits. Here's Nephi's brothers asking these questions and Nephi, in vs. 4, is grieved because the hardness of their hearts. And now I, Nephi, was grieved because of the hardness of their hearts, and also, because of the things which I had seen, and knew they must unavoidably come to pass because of the great wickedness of the children of men. One of the definitions of 'hard hearted' is that you just don't enquire. You don't feel a need to ask God for anything. You don't feel a need to express gratitude. You really don't need Him, until the chips are down, until something drastic happens in your life. Verse 10: Behold, I said unto them: How is it that ye do not keep the commandments of the Lord? How is it that ye will perish, because of the hardness of your hearts? That's the ultimate question. Let's cross reference that. Let's go to Jacob 6:6, and you can see the ultimate question of the BOM. When I have something underlined in my scriptures, I call it 'the ultimate question'. 6 Yea, today, if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts; for why will ye die? All you have to do is listen to that spirit. If you don't listen to that spirit, he asks the question 'why will ye die?' It's the same question he's asking over here. 'How is it that ye will perish, because of the hardness of your hearts? Because, if your heart remains hard, and you keep God out of your life, and you don't enquire, you don't seek direction, you will die. You'll die spiritually, and when you die physically, they'll be no hope. Let's look at other cross references on that. Let's go to Alma 10:25. These are all different ways of asking that question, "why will you die?" When life is in front of you, why will a person choose death when life, otherwise, is there. Amulek is speaking here. 25 But Amulek stretched forth his hand, and cried the mightier unto them, saying: O ye wicked and perverse generation, why hath Satan got such great hold upon your hearts? (There's the question.) Why will ye yield yourselves unto him that he may have power over you, to blind your eyes, that ye will not understand the words which are spoken, according to their truth? You can really get a feel for hard-heartedness is you go to Alma 12: which is my #1 scripture on what it means to be hard-hearted. These give us a pretty good idea of what it means to have a hard-heart. Vs : And therefore, he that will harden his heart, the same receiveth the lesser portion of the word; and he that will not harden his heart, to him is given the greater portion of the word, until it is given unto him to know the mysteries of God until he know them in full. (So, if you choose to reject these things because of the hardness of our heart, look where it ultimately leads.) 11 And they that will harden their hearts, to them is given the lesser portion of the word until they know nothing concerning his mysteries; and then they are taken captive by the devil, and led by his will down to destruction. Now this is what is meant by the chains of hell. So, all this leads into this "chains of hell". What is that? The chains of

hell is when you reject God's counsel, you won't listen to his voice, and because you choose to go that way, Satan then has power to captivate. When you reject God, you give Satan power to take you captive. Let's see if that's a true principle. Let's go on over to 2 Nephi 2:29. This is talking about our ability to choose. You can choose either to make wrong decisions and end up with a hard heart, or make correct decisions and end up with a softened heart. This verse talks about what happens if we choose to go the opposite way. 29 And not choose eternal death, according to the will of the flesh and the evil which is therein, which giveth the spirit of the devil power to captivate, to bring you down to hell, that he may reign over you in his own kingdom. So, his power to captivate comes when you make your wrong choices. When you make the wrong choice, you submit yourself to him and his power, and that can get stronger and stronger. I'm impressed that Satan can have no power over you, only as you allow it through improper choices that you make knowingly. Let's go to 1 Nephi 15:21 where Nephi is talking still about the tree of life and the brothers are questioning him, and he's saying, 'why don't you ask, yourself, and get these answers? Why are you asking me?' 21 And it came to pass that they did speak unto me again, saying: What meaneth this thing which our father saw in a dream? What meaneth the tree which he saw? 22 And I said unto them: It was a representation of the tree of life. 23 And they said unto me: What meaneth the rod of iron which our father saw, that led to the tree? 24 And I said unto them that it was the word of God; and whoso would hearken unto the word of God, and would hold fast unto it, they would never perish; neither could the temptations and the fiery darts of the adversary overpower them unto blindness, to lead them away to destruction. I think vs. 24 is one of the most powerful scriptures in the BOM, with the promise that it has there. There are two promises if we will do something with this thing called the 'word of God'. And we've seen Bro. Pontius' diagram that the word of God is made up of three different elements: scriptures, living prophets and personal on-going revelation. If we will take those 3 things, and harken unto them, and hold fast to those three things, then look at the promise: you'll never perish. In a world where 80% of the membership of the church in the Philippines have perished because they didn't hang on to that word of God, and they probably didn't know about it, then that's a pretty bold promise. I remember when we taught that in Mongolia, that was probably one of the main teachings with the Mongolian Saints right there, that we'd make them those 2 promises. If you'll hold fast to the word of God, you'll never fall away from the church. I still don't know anyone, personally, and let's just take the Book of Mormon, which is a part of that word of God, I don't know anyone who reads the Book of Mormon daily and says their prayers, that ever falls away. Then, the second promise is that the temptations of the devil will never have any power over you. So, if we will, every day, read the scriptures, and especially the Book of Mormon, because it's pure doctrine, it's not been changed or adulterated, and it has a special spirit in it, if we will read that book every day throughout our lives, if we will live close to the Lord and qualify to have his guidance through the Holy Spirit, and if we will follow the living prophets, you're never going to, two things: you're never going to fall away, and you'll make it through this life successfully. You'll inherit eternal life, and the temptations of the devil will have little, if any, power over you. That's the promise of that scripture. Sis. Stroud: I was just reading John Pontius' book saying how he taught in his Institute class, if you will just have your Book of Mormon open on your bed, and every night read just one verse. After a week or two, read two verses, and keep adding every so often more verses each night. Just keep your scriptures open, say your prayers, and have a picture of the Savior on your wall, so, it's the first thing you see in the morning and the last thing you see at night. He tells them they will never fall, if they do this. His book from 2010 is just one experience after another. Mike: Look at 1 Nephi 15: He talks about an awful gulf which separates the wicked from the tree of life, and also from the saints of God. So there is a great gulf there, a river of filthiness that runs down this gulf. Vs. 26 is mentioning the river of water which our father saw. 27 And I said unto them that the water which my father saw was filthiness; and so much was his mind swallowed up in other things that he beheld not the filthiness of the water. 28 And I said unto them that it was an awful gulf, which separated the wicked from the tree of life, and also from the saints of God. When Lehi sees that dream, one of the things that he doesn't see, that Nephi does, and they both see the river, but Nephi, in vs. 27, sees the filthiness of the water. Nephi says, 'so much was his mind swallowed up in other things that he beheld not the filthiness of the water'. So, here he is talking about those who are separated from the saints who are at the tree of life. Notice that he says here, 'separated from the saints of God.' You can ask yourself the question: "What does it mean to be a saint?" Saint comes from the word sanctified. Sanctified means holy and without spot. So, these are members of the church who have made covenants, progressed through their covenant keeping until they're sanctified, and are holy and without spot. They are separated from the rest. Let's go on to vs. 33, talking about the wicked. Wherefore, if they should die in their wickedness they must be cast off also, as to the things which are spiritual, which are pertaining to righteousness; wherefore, they must be brought to stand before God, to be judged of their works; and if their works have been filthiness they must needs be filthy; and if they be filthy it must needs be that they cannot (Here's your keyword.) dwell in the kingdom of God; if so, the kingdom of God must be filthy also. It doesn't mean that the wicked are not brought back into God's presence, because everyone will be brought back into the presence of God to be judged. The keyword is, if they are not holy, and clean without spot through the atonement, they cannot stay there, and we're not talking about sons of perdition here. We're talking about people who

have had the opportunity to hear the gospel, reject it, and then die in that unrepentant hard-hearted state. That's what he is talking about here. People who are hard-hearted. This isn't talking about people who have never heard about it, never had the opportunity to be exposed to the restoration. They can't have hard hearts, because in order to have a hard heart, you have to reject the gospel, when it is offered to you. We're talking about a specific group of people who come into contact with the truth, and then reject it, and then remain and die in that unrepentant state. They down for the telestial world. He's talking about where the Father and Son dwell: Mount Zion, highest degree of the Celestial Kingdom. Let's look at 1 Nephi 15:34: But behold, I say unto you, the kingdom of God is not filthy, and there cannot any unclean thing enter into the kingdom of God; wherefore there must needs be a place of filthiness prepared for that which is filthy. 35 And there is a place prepared, yea, even that awful hell of which I have spoken, and the devil is the preparator of it; wherefore the final state of the souls of men is to dwell in the kingdom of God, or to be cast out because of that justice of which I have spoken. 36 Wherefore, the wicked are rejected from the righteous, and also from that tree of life, whose fruit is most precious and most desirable above all other fruits; yea, and it is the greatest of all the gifts of God. And thus I spake unto my brethren. Amen. Questions about that? Student: Well, it says this is the greatest gifts of God, which is eternal life. But, John Pontius was talking about how the greatest gift of all is charity. It's sort of a different look on that. Mike: I don't think there is any problem, because when it goes back and he says, what was the tree? It, the tree, represents the love of God. That's an interpretation right there, which is charity. So, according to Nephi, he interpreted the tree itself, to be the love of God. Let's go to D&C 14:7: And, if you keep my commandments and endure to the end you shall have eternal life, which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God. Here's another formula that tells how we get to that point, where we can partake of the fruit of the tree, which he says here, "is the greatest of all the gifts of God ". 'If you keep my commandments and endure to the end', there's our part, 'which gift is the greatest of all the gifts of God'. That kind of fits in there. Let's go to 1 Nephi 16. This is one of my favorite scriptures here. They murmur. In vs. 1 the brothers say, "Thou hast declared unto us hard things, more than we are able to bear." What had Nephi said in the previous chapters, that was so hard for them to bear? Student: One, that they had to hold fast to the iron rod, which is the word of God. They have to endure to the end. Mike: And he talks to them about their hardness of heart. He tells them that unless they change their ways, they are going to perish, because of the hardness of their hearts. He hammers them a bit asking, 'Did you ask God? How come you're asking me?' etc...so, there's no slack here. Then he comes out in vs. 33 talking about Laman and Lemuel saying that if they should die in their wickedness, this is where you are going to be. They say, 'this is hard things you are saying to us', and I love what Nephi said back to them. 2 And it came to pass that I said unto them that I knew that I had spoken hard things against the wicked, according to the truth; and the righteous have I justified, and testified that they should be lifted up at the last day; wherefore, the guilty taketh the truth to be hard, for it cutteth them to the very center. Isn't that an eternal truth? Those who are not righteous, and hear the truth, are offended by it. They are offended by it because it describes and reveals their wickedness. It takes away all their hiding from the Lord. It reveals them in the bright light of revealed doctrine. It's like a cockroach. They can't stand the light. They hate the light and always seek for the darkness. There's always two groups. The Lord says, 'I've come unto mine own, but mine own receive me not.' The reason they don't receive Him is because they love darkness rather than light. Sis. Stroud: You know, any bug or insect is considered filthy because it carries germs, diseases and stuff like that, like rats and cockroaches or things like that. They all thrive in the darkness. In vs. 3 we have a great doctrinal principle. 3 And now my brethren, if ye were righteous and were willing to hearken to the truth, and give heed unto it, that ye might walk uprightly before God, then ye would not murmur because of the truth, and say: Thou speakest hard things against us. So, if you're murmuring, it's because you are not righteous. You are not willing to harken to the truth, and you are not willing to walk uprightly before God. The brothers get that message. All of these little things build up here over and over, and eventually, they are going to try and kill him, because of all this. Student: For a little bit, they humbled themselves. Mike: Several times, throughout this whole deal, they backed off, but they never seemed to get a hold of this whole deal. Next, we are introduced to this little instrument that we call the Liahona, which is a really interesting little thing. I have some thoughts on this that have come to me since we've been in the Philippines. I was reading this, especially it comes in the light when you look at the difference between the Holy Ghost and the Holy Spirit. Let's take a look, and get a description of what it is. 10 And it came to pass that as my father arose in the morning, and went forth to the tent door, to his great astonishment he beheld upon the ground a round ball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. And within the ball were two spindles; and the one pointed the way whither we should go into the wilderness. What can we learn about this thing? By the way, I read an article last night that David Whitmere, Martin Harris and Oliver Cowdery

saw this ball when Moroni showed them the plates. There was also the spindle, the Urim and Thummin, the sword of Laban, the plates and this little Liahona. They saw all of this, and described them. Sister Stroud had some insight into why this Liahona is round. It could be a symbol of eternity. Why two spindles? Notice it says there were two spindles. One points the way we should go, it's a director. It's like the Holy Spirit. The other one is a 'revealer'. Let's go to vs. 28: And it came to pass that I, Nephi, beheld the pointers which were in the ball, that they did work according to the faith and diligence and heed which we did give unto them. 29 And there was also written upon them a new writing, which was plain to be read, which did give us understanding concerning the ways of the Lord; and it was written and changed from time to time, according to the faith and diligence which we gave unto it. And thus we see that by small means the Lord can bring about great things. I'm wondering if one of the spindles is a directer, like a compass that points the direction, and on the other spindle they received new writings from time to time, which could be symbolic of the Holy Ghost, for instruction, revelation, etc. The one is directing like the Holy Spirit does, and the other is a revelation tool that gives some instruction, and teaching, and revelation. Just a little thought I had. For years I wondered, 'what are these two spindles all about?' So, what I'm putting out here is that the round ball is a symbol of eternity; God's course is one eternal round. (I tie that in with 'round'.) Then, the Holy Spirit is spindle #1 and it guides and directs like a compass. Then, the Holy Ghost is spindle #2, see vs. 29. There's writing, revelation, instruction, teaching and testifying. It's also interesting that they work: "according to the faith and diligence which we gave unto it." That's exactly the way it works. Let's go to vs. 16 and find out a couple things about it: And we did follow the directions of the ball, which led us in the more fertile parts of the wilderness. Now, if the wilderness is mortality in the telestial world, and we're all down here, and that becomes symbolic of the wilderness we're talking about, being out of the presence of God, and let's get a definition of 'wilderness'. D&C 88:66 Behold, that which you hear is as the voice of one crying in the wilderness in the wilderness, because you cannot see him my voice, because my voice is Spirit; my Spirit is truth; truth abideth and hath no end; and if it be in you it shall abound. This is the Lord's definition of what a wilderness is: Whenever you are out of the presence of God and you don't see him. Now, this directer, how about this, 'led us in the more fertile part of the wilderness." (vs. 16) Is there a symbol here? Here they are in a wild place, out of the presence of the Lord, it's possible to lose your life here if you are not smart, if you are not wise, if you are not directed, if you don't have counsel. So, this thing is leading them in the more fertile parts. What would be the more fertile parts in a wilderness? Would it be places of safety? Places of prosperity? Water, fruits, food, the necessities are here. What about spiritual safety? Where do we find spiritual safety in mortality, right now, when we're surrounded by the evils of Sodom and Gomorrah? Where do we find spiritual safety? Temples are the best, then church and a righteous home. The Bible Dictionary says, 'The home is second only to the temple'. Church isn't even mentioned. The home should be second, as far as spiritually and the temple. So, there's a great symbol there. Let's go to the broken bow incident. In vs. 18, Nephi breaks his bow, which is made of fine steel. 18 And it came to pass that as I, Nephi, went forth to slay food, behold, I did break my bow, which was made of fine steel; and after I did break my bow, behold, my brethren were angry with me because of the loss of my bow, for we did obtain no food. Vs. 19: because of that, the people suffer. 19 And it came to pass that we did return without food to our families, and being much fatigued, because of their journeying, they did suffer much for the want of food. In vs. 20, even father Lehi begins to murmur. 20 And it came to pass that Laman and Lemuel and the sons of Ishmael did begin to murmur exceedingly, because of their sufferings and afflictions in the wilderness; and also my father began to murmur against the Lord his God; yea, and they were all exceedingly sorrowful, even that they did murmur against the Lord. What can we learn from that? Any ideas? Student: Did they break the bow because they started taking things for granted or they weren't being reliant? Mike: It seems to me like they are doing everything they should. Laman and Lemuel were the perpetual murmurers, but you don't hear Lehi and Sariah and the other ones murmuring. So, if this incident comes, and they start to suffer, is it necessarily because they've done something wrong? Student: Not necessarily. If they haven't done something wrong, then this is something to give them strength. Adversity can strengthen you. They lost their bows and couldn't hunt for food. They had to repent of their murmuring, even Lehi, because he started murmuring. Sis. Stroud: This is a forced fast! Mike: Now, it's interesting, if we go on down and Nephi is wondering 'I wonder where I should go to get some food?' In answer to that question, in vs. 23, what does he do? 23 And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did make out of wood a bow, and out of a straight stick, an arrow; wherefore, I did arm myself with a bow and an arrow, with a sling and with stones. And I said unto my father: Whither shall I go to obtain food? But that's not all. What can we learn from this whole thing? Everybody's complaining, everybody's ready to sit down. Everybody's feeling sorry for themselves, but Nephi goes out and makes himself a bow and arrow, the bow out of wood. What can we learn here? He's the only one that up and doing something.

Student: The thing I would say is that when you have adversity in life, you can sit around and whine about it, or you can try and do something about it, with the Lord's help. In other words, you shouldn't have your lollipop prayer (Father, gimme gimme gimme!), having your hand out just waiting for other people's help. You have to do something about your own situation. Then, also, pray and rely on the Lord. It's like what Jesus said, 'If a man asks you to walk a mile with him, walk with him two'. You need to do your part also. Mike: Good, and you can see in the bottom of vs. 23, the last thing he does as he arms himself with a bow, arrows, a sling and with stones, is that he asks his father where he should go to obtain food. What's that all about? Sis. Stroud: Nephi is using patriarchial order, and letting his father go to the Lord for direction. (24 And it came to pass that he did inquire of the Lord, for they had humbled themselves because of my words; for I did say many things unto them in the energy of my soul.) Mike: Don't you find it interesting that Nephi is a significantly spiritual giant, and he's had some great experiences, and yet, when it comes down to this, he makes his weapons and then goes to his father to ask where to hunt for food. Sis. Stroud, what does this 'patriarchal order' mean that you referred to? Sis. Stroud: From righteous father to righteous son. It's like we have an order in the church. The prophet receives a revelation for the church, and it goes down through the proper channel. In a family, the head guy, the oldest righteous male/priesthood holder, is the one who has the authority over the welfare of the family. He's the mediator between Christ and the family. Mike: Very good. In vs. 25, he speaks to the Lord and "the voice of the Lord came unto my father". Vs. 26 the Lord says, Look upon the ball, and behold the things which are written. 27 And it came to pass that when my father beheld the things which were written upon the ball, he did fear and tremble exceedingly, and also my brethren and the sons of Ishmael and our wives. Then they found out that the ball worked "according to the faith and diligence and heed which we did give unto them" (in obeying the Lord and keeping His commandments). Vs. 30: And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did go forth up into the top of the mountain, according to the directions which were given upon the ball. Did Lehi tell Nephi where to go? He had asked 'where shall I go to obtain food?' It just occurred to me that he asked his father that, but his father didn't give him the answer to his question. Sis. Stroud: His father enquired of the Lord. Mike: And, what happened? The ball started to work. Student: First, the father was chastened by the Lord for his murmuring when his stomach was a little empty. It shows that prophecy is needed sometimes to prepare people also. It says that the ball started working, and everybody read the ball, though: "and also my brethren and the sons of Ishmael and our wives." They all took a look at the ball, so, Lehi might have been driving the boat, so to speak, but they were all sitting around seeing the ball, so, I don't find anything wrong with that. Mike: Good. The rest of that talks about them continuing their journey. Ishmael dies. Look at vs. 39: And it came to pass that the Lord was with us, yea, even the voice of the Lord came and did speak many words unto them, and did chasten them exceedingly; and after they were chastened by the voice of the Lord they did turn away their anger, and did repent of their sins, insomuch that the Lord did bless us again with food, that we did not perish. Mike: It's that situation again, we ask, "Why are these rebels even able to hear the voice of God?" Can you even find anything that's good about Laman and Lemuel? I guess one is that they do confess and repent periodically, but that's the only thing I can find that's good about them, and yet, they have angelic visitations, here in 1 Nephi 16:39 it says, "the Lord was with us, yea, even the voice of the Lord came and did speak many words unto them, and did chasten them exceedingly; and after they were chastened by the voice of the Lord they did turn away their anger, and did repent of their sins, insomuch that the Lord did bless us again with food, that we did not perish. I don't think that is the Holy Spirit, when the Lord is speaking to them. I don't think that is the 'still small voice'. I get the feeling when I read that, that they actually hear the voice of the Savior speaking to them. And, it says that this voice chastens them exceedingly. They are chastened by the voice of the Lord. The Lord was with them. So, it goes back to this thing that we talked about. These guys have this experience because their father has been 'called, elected and made sure', and because of the righteous covenants of the father, the children have blessings extended to them. That's the only thing I can think of, why these knuckleheads keep having these great experiences. It must be because of some covenant relationships that the mom and dad, especially the dad, had with the Lord. And, the more these boys know, the greater their condemnation when they don't obey. Let's go to 1 Nephi 17. Verse one kind of describes mortality, "we did travel and wade through much affliction in the wilderness; and our women did bear children in the wilderness." Interesting that they live on raw meat, in vs. 2. They don't cook their meat, after hunting and getting fresh game. Why do you think that is? Student: My thought is that they're traveling close to some caravan, and they don't want to be found out. Mike: I think you are right. I think, also, that there must be some warrants out. There must be some people looking for them. Laban is dead. They found his body without a head. The servant is gone. The treasury has been opened. Certain things are missing.

Sis. Stroud: Everybody has to follow those trails. That's where the water is. They have to stay close by the trail, otherwise they won't get water. Mike: And it's interesting that Lehi knows these trails. It's not like he's going off into an unknown area. He's probably traveled a lot of these paths as a caravaneer. We think that he was probably a merchant and was in charge of large caravans. In vs. 3 we have a 'thus we see' statement. So, whenever you see this in the BOM, you want to pay attention because, the person that's putting these 'thus we sees' is Mormon. So, Mormon is now taking what we've seen thus far and what we're learning, and he's now saying, "Now, I Mormon, say": 'thus we see', and he gives us kind of a small capsule synopsis of everything we should learn. Let's look at the principle of 'thus we see'. Verse 3: And thus we see that the commandments of God must be fulfilled. And if it so be that the children of men keep the commandments of God he doth nourish them, and strengthen them, and provide means whereby they can accomplish the thing which he has commanded them; wherefore, he did provide means for us while we did sojourn in the wilderness. That's kind of a tie-in with 1 Nephi 3:7, when Nephi goes back for the plates. 'I said unto my father, I will go and do the things, for the Lord giveth no commandment, save he prepares a way for them the accomplish...'. That's another tie-in. It's one of those BOM scripture principles that you can mine out by using 'if, then': "If we do this, then this is what will be the result." That's the difference between principles and doctrines. They travel in the wilderness for how many years, in vs. 4? Eight years. Is there anything symbolic there? What happens in eight years? The age of accountability, we become baptized, don't we. Sis Stroud: Then that's the time they go to the land of Bountiful, to the land for fruit and honey. Mike: And, I think Bountiful becomes symbolic of church membership, and that the eight years in the wilderness is symbolic of being baptized and entering into 'church wilderness'. As soon as the eight years is completed, they find themselves in a place with much fruit, wild honey, and all things were prepared of the Lord that we might not perish. (5 And we did come to the land which we called Bountiful, because of its much fruit and also wild honey; and all these things were prepared of the Lord that we might not perish. And we beheld the sea, which we called Irreantum, which, being interpreted, is many waters.) You find that in membership in the church. You find that in the covenants and promises of the church. What's on the other side of the sea that they might be looking for? The promised land. So, the seas that separate them from where they are at and the promised land represent what? (Light.) Why? It's possible to lose your life on these seas. So, the boat that they are about to build to carry them across the sea of light and lands them in the promised land is then a symbol of what? The atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the gospel, and all those blessings. Let's go to vs. 7. They hadn't been in Bountiful long when the Lord says what? 7. And it came to pass that after I, Nephi, had been in the land of Bountiful for the space of many days, the voice of the Lord came unto me, saying: Arise, and get thee into the mountain. And it came to pass that I arose and went up into the mountain, and cried unto the Lord. What would the mountain be symbolic of? That's a temple. 'Get up to the temple'. Why? 8 And it came to pass that the Lord spake unto me, saying: Thou shalt construct a ship, after the manner which I shall show thee, that I may carry thy people across these waters. Now, we've already looked at the symbolism of the ship. The ship is the Gospel of Jesus Christ, all of it's covenants. It's the power of the atonement. So, where does Nephi have this information revealed? In the temple. Where can we find out the deep meanings of the atonement and the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the purpose of life? In our high mountain. In our temple. We learn a lot about these things in the church, but if you really want to find the deeper meanings, then we need to go to the temple where the Lord will reveal to us about our own personal ship. So, here he tells Nephi to build a ship, to cross the dangerous waters, in order to come to the promised land, the celestial world. He does the same thing to us. When we go through the temple, we receive revelation necessary for us to cross those waters in our own ship, and land in the promised land. Now, look at vs. 9: And I said: Lord, whither shall I go that I may find ore to molten, that I may make tools to construct the ship after the manner which thou hast shown unto me? By verses 9-12, I have a little statement in my scriptures. "How do I access the power of the atonement?" Here, the Lord says we have to build a ship, but he's leaving some things out. Nephi asks how he is supposed to build that ship, and where do I find the tools in order to do this? The Lord tells him he will need to find ore, to make metal tools. There's a revelation in here somewhere that Nephi will need metal instruments. He's not talking about hewing beams, and not talking about carpentry. First of all, we've got to have some metal tools. And, Nephi's question is 'where will I find metal ore to make metal tools?' Let's look at vs. 10: And it came to pass that the Lord told me whither I should go to find ore, that I might make tools. What do you think these tools were made out of? Did they know how to make steel? They had a steel bow, so steel was used, and they had that. What would be the easiest metal to make, out of rock, or materials that would serve the purpose for what they're doing here? Iron. That would be the easiest one. Let's look at vs. 11: And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did make a bellows wherewith to blow the fire, of the skins of beasts; and after I had made a bellows, that I might have wherewith to blow the fire, I did smite two stones together that I might make fire. Now, I'm a survival instructor. I know all kinds of ways to make fire without matches. I've never found two stones that I could strike together to make a fire. I can get a spark, but I've never been able to see how to grab

that spark hot enough to do that. I'd like to know how he did that. That's one of the questions I'm going to ask Nephi. "How did you make that fire?" Let's go to vs. 13. Think about what the Lord says, and the symbols here. Go back to vs. 7 here where he says, Arise, and get thee into the mountain. 13. And I will also be your light in the wilderness; and I will prepare the way before you, if it so be that ye shall keep my commandments; wherefore, (look at this:) inasmuch as ye shall keep my commandments ye shall be led towards the promised land; and ye shall know that it is by me that ye are led. So, the message here is, They can't do anything, they can't build this ship, they can't get across that ocean, and, if they build this ship, it is a ship built by revelation. These guys are NOT shipbuilders. They are not seamen. These are land dwellers, as far as we know. So, for them to build a ship that can cross this kind of water, and go from one side of the world to the other, is an impossibility for these guys, unless they have direct revelation. When Nephi comes down and says, 'we're going to build a ship', Laman and Lemuel almost die and have a hilarious fit. They mock him to no end. Stop to think that they are standing on the edge of the ocean looking out, and there is nothing on the other side they can see. Then, here's these land dwellers that are going to build a ship that will take their families and provisions all the way across the ocean to an unknown place. It was daunting. No wonder that Laman and Lemuel made fun of Nephi. This whole 17th chapter is Nephi, basically, laying out his case: If God said we can do it, we can do it. Let's go to vs. 14: Yea, and the Lord said also that: After ye have arrived in the promised land, ye shall know that I, the Lord, am God; and that I, the Lord, did deliver you from destruction; yea, that I did bring you out of the land of Jerusalem. Let's see if we can see a pattern here. Go back to vs. 8: "that I may carry thy people across these waters." Now, vs. 13: "that I may carry thy people across these waters" and "I will prepare the way before you" and "t is by me that ye are led". Vs. 14: "I, the Lord, am God" and "I, the Lord, did deliver you from destruction" and "I did bring you out of the land of Jerusalem". So, what's the pattern here? What is he trying to teach here? Sis. Stroud: I am the way. Mike: I want to give you a good cross reference, for what the Lord is trying to teach us here. This is the parable of the branch and the vine. Let's go to the Bible, John 15:1. I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman. (So, the Father plants the vine. Think of a grapevine.) 2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: (Every February I go out to my grapevines and trim back the branches. I leave the trunk.) and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit. 3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. (Here we go) 5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: (Here's the lesson.) for without me ye can do nothing. I think that's the message that Nephi is giving here, that the Lord is giving to Nephi. 'I am the one that's doing this. You keep this record so that future generations will look back on your trip from Jerusalem, and your voyage across the sea, and know that you could have not accomplished any of that, if it weren't for me.' I think that's the message we're supposed to get. Let's go on down here. What he does is that he brings them down to the point that he talks about Moses and the children of Israel. Let's go to 1 Nephi 17:30. In this area, you can read a lot about Moses and the children of Israel in bondage in vs , and how Moses brought them forth. In vs. 28 it talks about the manna in the wilderness. In vs. 29 is the water out of the rock. So, basically, he lays out the whole history of Moses. Where is Nephi getting this information from, that he is now quoting to his brothers? The Brass Plates. 30. And notwithstanding they being led, the Lord their God, their Redeemer, going before them, leading them by day and giving light unto them by night, (Another symbol of the Liahona.) and doing all things for them which were expedient for man to receive, they hardened their hearts and blinded their minds, and reviled against Moses and against the true and living God. Now, as they come into the promised land, in vs. 32, the Lord tells them that they are to destroy every living thing in the land of Caanan: men, women, children, animals, anything that has life. The first city they came to was a little place called Jericho. We know the story of that. I don't know if it was Jericho or Ai, I'd have to look that up. The fact that the Lord told them to destroy all this really bothers a lot of people. We have the same situation here, that Nephi, who reads the brass records and reads the commandment, 'Thou shalt Not Kill', and Nephi is standing looking at Laban, and the Spirit says, 'kill him', it's a big quandary. A lot of people do not like the BOM. I know people who have read it up to that point, closed it, and said, 'It's not true, because your book says God told this man to kill another man, and the Ten Commandments say thou shalt not kill.' I know people who have stopped reading the BOM right there in Nephi 4-5 because of that. They never got further in the book. Student: I used to have that question too. Moses goes up into the mountain, gets the Ten Commandments, comes on down, and then sees the wickedness of the people and destroys a portion of them. Mike: That's right, but Joshua, who is the new prophet, and a whole book named after him--the whole Book of Joshua, is the story of Joshua going through and wiping these people out. As a matter of fact, the children of Israel lose some of their blessings because they're disobedient to God's command to kill them all. They let some of them live. They take some women slaves, and they let some others live, and because of that, their whole history of losing God's blessings come

because of that disobedience. Now, Nephi gives us some inside information here in vs. 33: And now, do ye suppose that the children of this land, (The Caananites that we are talking about.) who were in the land of promise, who were driven out by our fathers,(joshua) do ye suppose that they were righteous? Behold, I say unto you, Nay. 34 Do ye suppose that our fathers would have been more choice than they if they had been righteous? (There's an interesting question. Do you think that our Israelite fathers, the covenant people, were better than these people? If the people were righteous, would the children of Israel have been better than they are?) I say unto you, Nay. So, it's not a matter of the covenant. It's a matter of individual righteousness. Now, look at vs. 35, and here's a great principle: 35. Behold, the Lord esteemeth all flesh in one; he that is righteous is favored of God. (An Israelite, who is part of the covenant people, that breaks a commandment, is no better off in the eyes of God, than a Caananite, who is slaughtering his kids. What's really important is not who you are, it's how obedient you are to the laws and commandments, and the covenants you've kept up to that point.) But behold, this people (the Caananites) had rejected every word of God, and they were (Here's your key.) ripe in iniquity; and the fulness of the wrath of God was upon them; and the Lord did curse the land against them, and bless it unto our fathers; yea, he did curse it against them unto their destruction, and he did bless it unto our fathers unto their obtaining power over it. Any time a people get to that point of 'ripe in iniquity', the Lord tells us that he does something. Let's go to Ether 8:22 for a minute, so we can tie this in. There's a reason why when the children of Israel came into this nation of people, God didn't command them to be killed so he could 'make room' for his covenant people, because, if these people had been righteous, he would have sent the Israelites in there, give them the message of the gospel, and treated them as equals. But, the fact is, at this time when they come in, these people were already ripe in iniquity, so the timing was right. Student: That's sort of like Sodom and Gomorrah, right? Mike: Sodom and Gomorrah were the same type thing. Student: What nationality were they, in Sodom and Gomorrah? Were they Israelites: Mike: They weren't. 22 And whatsoever nation shall uphold such secret combinations, to get power and gain, until they shall spread over the nation, behold, they shall be destroyed; for the Lord will not suffer that the blood of his saints, which shall be shed by them, shall always cry unto him from the ground for vengeance upon them and yet he avenge them not. So, there we have that little thing. Let's go to Ether 2:7. Now, anciently, the land of promise for the Israelites was what we call now 'the State of Israel.' It's where the little nation of Israel is. The land of promise for the Nephites is going to be North and South America, wherever they land. In vs. 7, let's see what the word of the Lord is concerning the promised lands and the inhabitants of those lands. 7 And the Lord would not suffer that they should stop beyond the sea in the wilderness, but he would that they should come forth even unto the land of promise, which was choice above all other lands, which the Lord God had preserved for a righteous people. (There's the key. These lands were reserved for a righteous people.) 8 And he had sworn in his wrath unto the brother of Jared, that whoso should possess this land of promise, from that time henceforth and forever, should serve him, the true and only God, or they should be swept off when the fulness of his wrath should come upon them. So, now we have this word 'fulness of his wrath'. Go to vs. 15, the middle of it: "for ye shall remember that my Spirit will not always strive with man; wherefore, if ye will sin until ye are fully ripe ye shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord. And these are my thoughts upon the land which I shall give you for your inheritance; for it shall be a land choice above all other lands." So, vs. 8 says, "fulness of his wrath" and here it says "fully ripe". And in 1 Nephi 17:35, it says, "and they were ripe in iniquity; and the fulness of the wrath of God was upon them". Here we see how this works. Without reading all these verses back in Ether 2:7-10, the words 'swept off' are used five times, referring to people who are in a promised land, but refuse to keep the commandments of the Lord. Then, they are swept off. That's what happened to these Caananites. Let's look at 1 Nephi 17 and finish this chapter up. Verse 40: "And he loveth those who will have him to be their God. Behold, he loved our fathers, and he covenanted with them, yea, even Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob;" The Lord loves those who serve him and have him as their God, no matter who they are. If he is no respecter of persons, and all are alike, and everybody's invited, then, if the 'fullness of the wrath' is poured out upon somebody, it's because they've become 'ripened in iniquity' and they have to be taken off the earth. Why are they taken off the earth? For their own good. Did you know that removing these people is an act of love? Did you know that when Joshua comes in, and he is commanded to take them all out, put them under the sword, that that is an act of love? Why? Student: Because it would stop them from sinning and hurting themselves further. Going to the Spirit World, they then can hear the gospel and move on. Mike: What about the little children? Student: The little children were kind of doomed from the beginning. Mike: Yea, they don't stand a chance in that society. So, little children are alive in Christ anyway. Let's take them out of here, because they won't have a chance in this society. They are saved in the celestial world. Let's take them out and put them in the Spirit World in Paradise. Middle of vs. 40: "and he remembered the covenants which he had made; wherefore, he did bring them out of the land of Egypt." Now, the whole rest of chapter 17 is a history of the house of Israel, coming up out of Egypt and claiming their promised land.

Let's look at one last thing. You'll remember that when they came up there, the Lord caused poisonous serpents to come in among the children of Israel and bite them. I guess there was just a plague of snakes, and it says, "fiery, flying serpents". That was interpreted anciently as not a flying serpent, but a poisonous snake. For some reason, that's the way the interpretation comes out. These snakes bite the people, and I guess there must be thousands of people who are dying. Then the Lord reveals to Moses to take a pole and fashion a brass snake and wrap it up that pole, so the snake wraps around the pole. Then, hold that pole up, and tell the people that if they will look at that pole, then their snake bites will be instantly healed, and those that are in the middle of dying, will be made alive and will be healed completely. That symbol of that pole with the snake around it, to this very day, is the symbol of the American Medical Association. Every doctor and every nurse has that, either on a card, or on their uniform. It comes from right here, with the children of Israel. So, what does that symbol represent? It represents Christ, being lifted up on a cross. It's interesting that anciently, one of the symbols of Christ, was a serpent. In ancient America, that feathered serpent symbol is found in Ketsoquadle and other places like that. So, we have the snake symbol as an evil symbol because of the Garden of Eden. But, for some reason, and I'm not sure why, a snake or a serpent is a symbol of the Son of God. But, it is, and I haven't been able to find out why. Look at vs. 41 "...and after they were bitten he prepared a way that they might be healed; and the labor which they had to perform was to look; (Here they are, dying of the snake bite, and all they had to do was lift their eyes up, elevate, see this, and the minute they look at that, immediately they were healed.) and because of the simpleness of the way, or the easiness of it, there were many who perished. What's the symbol there? The way is so easy, but people would rather not look, and die. Sis. Stroud: They probably didn't have much faith and thought it was just too easy, and it wouldn't work. Mike: Do we have anything like today? Sis. Stroud: It's like the sick guy who was told to go bathe in the river seven times. The man says, 'That's stupid, why don't you come and talk to me? Why would he tell me to do this? Really!' Mike: So, then is it another example of obedience, even if he doesn't understand it? In this case, it was just so simple, that they just couldn't understand how something like that could work.
