1 VOLUME 14, ISSUE 28 JUNE 2017 The Messenger A Publication of St. Martha s Episcopal Church Bethany Beach, DE Dear Ones, It is hard to believe, especially with the weather today, but the Summer season has arrived! I noted all the international students on bikes as I was coming in to the church, and the summer residents are also beginning to arrive. Our schedule of activities is also increasing. We just had our first Used Book & Bake Sale and it was wildly successful!! Good job to all involved. This month of June we have a Jumble Sale (See flyer)...a British term for a Rummage or Garage Sale. We also will be showing a new documentary film on June 13 th before it goes into wide release - From the Ashes - comes to us from National Geographic and is sponsored by Interfaith Power & Light. There is another Documentary we will be showing in July also from Interfaith Power & Light. - Before the Flood - will be shown on July 11 th. Our next Used Book & Bake Sale will be July 1 st - the Saturday of the July 4 th holiday weekend, and we will have the Rosenfeld s Jewish Deli Truck here as well1 What could be better than good books and good food and desserts as well! Well, it could be a 4 th of July Picnic here at the church! Again, good food, good company and a great place to watch the fireworks. The class about the Episcopal Church is also continuing during the month of June, and probably July. It will be interrupted on one date in June by the other big event in our life together - the election of a new Bishop for the Diocese of Delaware!!! One June 3 rd, the delegates, alternates and I will be attending a special training to prepare us for the electing Convention in July. One June 29 th ALL are invited to attend the Walkabout with the candidates at St. Peter s, Lewes from 6 to 9 pm. This will be our opportunity to meet and hear in person the five candidates so you can share your opinions with our delegates: Beth Maurer & Phyllis Mikolaites as well as our alternates: Tina Edgar and Bud Palmer...oh, and me! Our other interruption of the Episcopal Class in June is a favorite event of mine - the International Student Picnic on June 22nd! This is a fun evening of food & sharing with this group of young adults who have come here to Bethany to work for the summer. It is an opportunity of sheer grace for us. A time for us to share the hospitality of our country, our community, our abundance! There is a sign up for providing food for this picnic at the church. And feel free to come and help (and eat) as well. By the way...have you noticed most of events involve food???? It is reflective of our Christian faith as from the earliest days of the church we have share the food of the Eucharist in addition to the common potluck meal! So come and be fed... Blessings, Rev. Mary Louise+ 1
2 VESTRY MEETING MINUTES FOR April 24, 2017 Attendees: Mary Louise Allen (Rector), Don Boebel (Senior Warden, 2017), Lanny Moore (Junior Warden, 2018), Bill Freund (2019), Pat Long (2017), Barbara Reardon (2017), Nancy Rojewski (2019), Tempe Steen (2019), Al Thomas (2018), Todd Stevenson (Treasurer) and Ron Kerchner (Assistant Treasurer). Absent: Beth Maurer (2018),The meeting was called to order by Don Boebel at 7:00 PM.The opening prayer was said by Nancy Rojewski. Minutes: The Vestry accepted the 3/20/2017 Vestry and Executive session minutes as approved electronically via on 3/27/2017 and 4/18/2017 respectively. Financial Report: A motion made by Don Boebel and seconded by Nancy Rojewski to accept the Finance Committee s March report was approved.a motion made by Tempe Steen and seconded by Bill Freund to place the $18,750 donated by Lighthipe, LLC into the Long Range Capital Improvement account was approved. This was the Finance Committee s recommendation to the Vestry. In a related matter, Don Boebel and others reminded the Vestry that some years ago, several local churches contributed $22, to St. Martha s for construction of a school on the Lighthipe property. Since a school will not be constructed, the contributors will be reimbursed when the Lighthipe sale is consummated. After discussion, the Vestry decided that the only monthly financial reports needed were the St Martha s Operating Budget, Budget vs. Actuals; St. Martha s Account Balances (per Books); and St. Marta s Restricted Fund, I & E by Sub Account (provided quarterly). New Business Website: A proposal to redevelop the St. Martha s website was distributed and contained various pricing options. After discussion, three things were decided e.g. the new site s primary focus would be for visitors; the current site s existing documents need to be reviewed prior to placing them into the new site; and vestry members need to be educated about websites and site development issues. Vestry members will review other sites for development ideas that can be shared with each other. Therefore, consideration of the proposal is being delayed. Church Content Inventory: A Diocesan Advanced Funds Development Committee has requested information from all parishes on a variety of issues concerning facilities. While responding to this request, Don Boebel will try to gather information and videos for the contents inventory required for insurance purposes. The information will also be useful as input to capital improvement plans.welcome brochures/postcards for CC: Postponed until next month. International students: There will be three orientation sessions for international students during the late spring at Sea Colony. Topics will include bicycle safety, visas, rules, etc. St. Martha s will have one of the seven tables at the events. Housing for the students continues to be a perennial problem. Worship training, BCP: Discussion focused on a proposal to revert to using the Book of Common Prayer in lieu of folders. The consensus was to keep using folders. Junior Warden Report: Lanny Moore reported some facts about Camp Arrowhead, including a) that St. Martha s contributes $5,000 in scholarship funds; b) camp capacity is 1,100 children and there are some openings remaining for 2017; and c) that the price for families is up to $600 per week per child. She also mentioned the trip to see the facilities on May 4 th that is scheduled to leave at 9AM from St. Martha s. Senior Warden s report: The Senior Warden reported a donation of an additional dishwasher and stove for the kitchen. New electrical outlets are needed at an estimated cost of roughly $700. Several bids will be solicited and the Vestry unanimously approved using the restricted kitchen account. Don Boebel then brought up the need to determine how the parish should preserve and use funds from the Lighthipe property sale. A number of names were suggested for a committee to look into this matter. Rector s report: The Rector will be out May 8 th through May 20 th and will arrange for supply clergy. In addition, she is preparing a funding proposal for a partial sabbatical in October. The meeting adjourned at 9:00 PM. Respectively submitted, William H. Freund Secretary to the Vestry 2
