So do t coclude that RBO s (Rights Based Ordiaces) are some leftist liberal ut job idea that wats to give huma rights to rocks ad trees. It took me a full day to get through all the data to see that light, ad part of which icluded igorig upo my arrival the cadre of Priuses I ecoutered i the parkig lot i Newmarket, where I traveled to gai this kowledge o behalf of my costituets. But, as part of my commitmet to represet your iterests, I devoted the time eeded to come to that coclusio. Yeah, iitially there are mostly liberals ope to the idea i attedace at these evets who likely wat to save the whales, the spotted owl ad every tree ever plated. But allies sometime come together with commo goals i mid. Older folks will remember whe Russia ad the USA were oce allies, ot just the subject of fake ews o CNN, MSNBC, etcetera; yes, you uder 30 year olds, that was oce true! Now that we kow all thigs are possible (with special thaks to the Patriots & Super Bowl 51 for remidig us, recetly), we eed to assess where we are ad together, as allies, plot our pla of actio for what is our path to victory i what has ow become the 4th quarter. To that ed, were I callig the shots, I say the play we eed to ru right ow is goig forward with a RBO. Pass such a ordiace with the free guidace of CELDF (The Commuity Evirometal Legal Defese Fud) i each tow affected by Norther Pass, ad it must be doe at our upcomig March 2018 Tow Meetigs. That is my recommedatio to the goverig boards of the remaiig three tows i my district who have ot yet doe so: Bristol, Bridgewater ad Ashlad (Alexadria & Grafto have already doe so, ad effectively blocked wid projects as a result; so I rest my case o its efficacy). This recommedatio is also made to ay active citize i ay tow who cares eough to go ahead with a worthwhile effort via a petitioed warrat article that could truly stop Norther Pass if they were really committed to do so; ot just cotiue with stupid platitudes or sigs that will achieve exactly othig toward that goal. This recommedatio is exteded to other colleagues i the state legislature who wat to get o-board with me i co-sposorig House Legislatio CACR19 i support of the costitutioal chage ecessary to codify the effort made by various commuities to date with their RBO s. More to come from me persoally o this broad topic. Select Boards i subject tows should look forward to a more detailed writte recommedatio from me shortly. I the iterim, detailed efforts ca be started more quickly by those who care to do so by cotactig Michelle Sabor at: or New Hampshire Commuity Rights Network (NHCRN) michelle@celdf.org to get started by ivestig (it s free) i a work sessio of your select board or commuity group. 5 Opiio A5 Strategies For Livig The dawig of a ew day BY LARRY SCOTT Dr. William Lae Craig, i his book, O Guard, tells his persoal story, oe that seems to summarize much of what I have bee attemptig to highlight i this colum. Raised i a fie although o-christia home, while still a teeager, he bega questioig his place ad purpose i life. To fid a aswer he bega attedig a large church but soo discovered that that fellowship was little more tha a social club. Although claimig to be Christias, he foud they were livig by stadards far lower tha his ow, pretedig to be somethig they were ot. O oe really bad hair day, he walked ito Germa class ad sat behid a girl that always seemed to be so happy. O impulse, he tapped her o the shoulder ad growled, Sady, what are you always so happy about ayway? I will let him tell the rest of the story. Well, Bill, she said, it s because I m saved! I was stued. I had ever heard laguage like this before. You re what? I demaded. I kow Jesus Christ as my persoal Savior, she explaied. I go to church, I said lamely. But that s ot eough, Bill, she said, You ve got to have Him really livig i your heart. That was the limit! What would He wat to do a thig like that for: I demaded. Because He loves you, Bill. That hit me like a to of bricks. Here I A too-log iterruptio i the life of a fie old road Route 145, the socalled back way betwee Pittsburg ad Colebrook, is oe of the few old, graceful, quirky, upredictable, ad yes, to some of today s impatiet drivers, dowright usafe roads that have bee spared the moder rebuild process. It has remaied uchaged durig decades of highway improvemet elsewhere, ad is still the same old, same old. What we kow as Route 145 bega as a foot path ad grew ito a rough, stump-dotted, boulder-roudig oetrack cart path. This i tur morphed ito a pretty good haulig road, good eough for farm wagos ad eve stage coaches, except durig mud seaso. Evetually crews wideed it to two arrow laes, but ecoomics, commo sese ad the lay of the lad forced the retetio of Route 145 s character, as road-lovers say with such paache. Stage coaches did ideed ply Route 145, NORTH COUNTRY NOTEBOOK By JOHN HARRIGAN just as they did eve rougher ad tougher highways ad byways right up to the advet of the iteral combustio egie. Travelers goig from Colebrook to Pittsburg wet just orth of Colebrook o the Daiel Webster Highway (Route 3) to Hughes Road, just orth of La- Perle s IGA, the up to South Hill Road-- -right past my frot law---to North Hill Road, ad the up ad over to the juctio at Creampoke, the over Old Couty Road to its juctio with Clarksville Pod Road, ad o over Be Youg Hill ad oto the Baco covered bridge across the Coecticut River to Pittsburg. There was a stagecoach stop---a i ad taver---at the juctio of South Hill, Chet Noyes ad North Hill roads. A stad of balm of Gilead trees marks was, so filled with ager ad hate, ad she said there was someoe who really loved me. That bega for me the most agoizig period of soul-searchig that I ve ever bee through. I got a New Testamet ad read it from cover to cover. Ad as I did, I was absolutely captivated by the perso of Jesus of Nazareth. Meawhile, Sady itroduced me to other Christia studets. They were livig life o a plae of reality that I did t eve dream existed, ad it imparted a deep meaig ad joy to their lives, which I craved. My spiritual search wet o for the ext six moths. Fially, I just came to the ed of my rope ad cried out to God. Stockig Stuffers I cried out all the ager ad bitteress that had built up iside me, ad at the same time I felt this tremedous ifusio of joy. That momet chaged my whole life ( O Guard, Chapter 2). It was for Dr. Craig the dawig of a ew day. So dramatic was the chage that came to his life he has sice become oe of the great defeders of the Christia faith. There is, ideed, somethig real to Biblical Christiaity. Those fudametal issues of life our origi, our purpose, our morality ad our destiy all fid their fulfillmet i the fact of God s existece ad i a surreder to His authority. Far from beig a isurace policy agaist the possibility of hell, we have discovered a quality of life, peace of mid, ew stregth to face our bad days, ad a reaso for keepig o that we would have bee uable to fid i ay other way. Ad, as if that were ot eough, there is a heave i our future ad we ca hardly wait! F.Y.I.: O a persoal ote, I will be preachig o Suday morig, Nov. 26, at the Loudo Church of the Nazaree, 33 Staiels Rd., Loudo (across from what used to be kow as the Red Roof I o Route 106). The service begis at 9:30 a.m. If you have bee followig my by-lie, it would be a pleasure to meet you! Gift Sets Give the gift of Olive Oils & Balsamics this holiday seaso! I ca imagie the scee---stable boys feedig ad beddig the horses, while iside came cries for supper ad thumps of mugs o the table for more ale. These days, while some locals coted with the road s everyday bothers ad grumble, people come Poured just for you A Uique Tastig Experiece Ope Wed-Sat 11:00am-5:00pm Suday 11:00am-3:00pm Closed Mo-Tues 25 North Mai St., Uit 11 Wolfeboro, NH (603) Happy Thaksgivig Gift Certificates from all over the coutry to drive Route 145 just for the sheer fu of it---largely because of those very dips, sudde corers, blid hills uevely baked corers, ad the occasioal brief, straightaway jewel with the ievitable wake-up call aroud the corer. But visitors ad locals have had their sceic drives ad everyday lives iterrupted for most of the past year by the iescapable replacemet of the aciet bridge carryig Route 145 across the mai brach of Bishop Brook, just below what is ow kow as the Poore Farm Museum. Now, at log last, the job is fiished for all but the cosmetics. Whe I dropped out of my first year of college ad came home i disgrace, ad was lucky eough to get a job at Beecher Falls Factory divisio of Etha Alle, I of course bought the most implausible ad impractical car possible, a MGB roadster covertible. It was all but useless i sow, ad the heater was a joke, but as we said i those times, i good weather, mister ma would she go, ad did she ever like those tight corers o good old Route 145. No leaig or tippig there, just racig-car flatess. There are t may roads like Route 145 left, most of them havig bee straighteed ad flatteed ad wideed ito everyday oblivio. But here ad there a stadout remais. I m thikig here about Route 113, aroud the top ed of Wiipesaukee, more or less coectig Route 16 i the east to Route 3 i the west. It is a joy to drive, humped here ad there by the remiders of buried boulders ad stumps. I oe sectio, someoe oce told me, a road crew diggig dow to fix oe mysterious hump or sag or aother foud some old corduroy road, which was the old way of carryig a road across a swampy area-- -cedar logs (which take a very log time to rot), laid side by side crossways, just like corduroy pats. Now, it s obody s secret that I ve sometimes bee at odds over the years with New Hampshire s Departmet of Trasportatio, mostly i the category of over-desigig ad overbuildig, meaig proposig a ew road or bridge too big ad totally out of character with the origial road ad its surroudigs. Ad I ve lost more of these battles tha I ve wo, for sure. But guess what? It appears, to me, a guy who kows every foot of Route 145, from boyhood o up, that D.O.T. has built a damed ice bridge, i a very tight ad difficult spot, ad as close to the character of the place as possible. So here s a tip of the hat to the pe-pushers ad builders at D.O.T., ad to old ad I ll be test-drivig the ew bridge tomorrow. MARK ON THE MARKETS Black swas makes BY MARK PATTERSON I suppose we have all heard the phrase black swa evet, which is a metaphor to describe a evet that comes as a surprise ad has a major effect. Black Swa is derived from the Lati expressio coied i the 16th Cetury whe the thikig was that there were o black swas, oly white. But i 1697 Dutch explorers first saw a black swa i wester Australia. The sightig opeed the door to the theories of statistical outliers happeig whe it was thought they could ot. We ted to remember black Swa evets as surprises that are typically egative such as the attacks o the World Trade Ceter s twi towers i While this is certaily a black swa evet, so is the discovery of the Iteret which I thik, most people would perceive as very positive. So, how does all this relate to the maagemet of your assets ad ivestmets? You caot maage or should ot maage for black Swa evets, but your portfolio of ivestmets should be maaged per moder portfolio theory. Harry Markowitz wrote a essay i 1952 o moder portfolio theory. Markowitz, a ecoomist, wrote about mea-variace aalysis. These phrases are straight out of the statistics textbook ad I m sure may of you are familiar with. But it is how they are applied regardig your ivestmet portfolio what Got Stuff?\ Sell it. For Free! them sigificat ad extremely relevat. I the evet of a black swa evet you will likely see world debt ad equity markets react i a extreme maer. I 1987, black Moday saw the Dow Joes idustrials lose sigificat amouts of value. Those who were usig margi or sold ear the bottom did ot recover. But if you remember the bell curve, as thigs move away from the statistical mea or average they will i fact revert to the average. Markowitz believed havig a variety of o-correlated assets you would ehace the yield of your portfolio ad reduce the risk. This is very true today if you ca obtai real asset diversificatio. Ufortuately, what I see all too ofte, are mutual fuds with differet ames which would you lead you to believe that they are diversified but ofte have very similar holdigs i very similar asset classes. I persoally have ot see a occasio where oe family of mutual fuds ca provide true asset diversificatio. I a truly diversified asset mix, ot all your ivestmets will be doig great at the same time ad coversely, they will ot all do poorly at the same. Bull markets i equities ofte give us a false sese of security ad ted to make us chase the wiers ad shu the laggards. Thigs chage ad go through their various cycles. Rebalacig a diverse portfolio is ecessary otherwise you o loger have properly diversified asset mix. Risk ad your portfolios objective will also determie the asset mix. Is growth your objective? Icome? Capital preservatio? All these objectives ca be maaged i a properly diversified mix of low fee, high value ivestmets. With just a 7-0 lead at the halftime break, there was plety of cocer i the Bobcat locker room about the secod half. The first drive of the secod half was key, said Plymouth coach Chris Sabor. We talked (at the half) about adversity, we told them, you wated a game ad they brought it. We re up 7-0, let s see who wats it more, Sabor said of his halftime rallyig speech. The first drive of the secod half lasted just four plays ad less tha two miutes but it resulted i a Garrett Macomber touchdow ru of 21 yards to put Plymouth up That was the drive of the game, Sabor said. That set the toe. Puttig oe i ad doig it i a hurry, that was huge. Out of the gate, the two teams struggled to get the offese movig. The Saits were dealt three pealties o the first drive ad ever got a first dow. Plymouth s first drive saw Macomber pick up a first dow but the Sait defese held tight after that.
