1 The Emmaus Road Conversation Mark 16:12, 13, Luke 24:13-32
2 The Emmaus Road Conversation Texts: Mark 16:12, 13, 12. After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country. 13. And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them. Luke 24:13-32, 13. And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. 14. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. 15. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. 16. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. 17. And he said unto them, What manner of communication are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk and are sad? 18. And then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? 19. And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: 20. And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. 21. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, today is the third day since these things were done. 22. Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulcher;
3 23. And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. 24. And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulcher, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not. 25. Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: 26. Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? 27. And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. 28. And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. 29. But they constrained him, saying, abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. 30. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave to them. 31. And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. 32. And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? Commentary: Luke 24:13, And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. I. Two men, one of whom was Cleopas to whom there is no other reference in the New Testament, on the resurrection day were going to a village called Emmaus. The other man is not identified. A. Emmaus was located sixty stadia, furlongs; that is, six and three-fourths miles from Jerusalem.
4 B. The two men, to get to Emmaus, were walking in the country. C. Emmaus is now known as Kolonieh because it was made a Roman colony by Emperor Titus. D. It is amazing that Christ chose to appear to these two obscure disciples on that resurrection day. Jesus is concerned for the least of us. Mark 16:12, After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country. Luke 24:14, 15, And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. I. As these two men walked along they talked with each other about all the things which had happened; viz., the arrest, trial, crucifixion and burial of Jesus Christ. II. As they went along Jesus drew near and went with them. A. Jesus was not recognized by these two men because Jesus appeared to them in a different form. B. These men were deeply interested in the events related to Jesus passion. We too must be intently interested in everything pertaining to Jesus. C. Jesus resurrected body or his powers over the minds of those to whom he appeared made it easy for Jesus to go unrecognized until he wished to be recognized.
5 Luke 24:16, 17, But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said unto them, What manner of communication are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk and are sad? I. The eyes of these two men were holden that they should not know, recognize Jesus. The NIV reads,... they were kept from recognizing him. II. Jesus asked what the men were talking about. The NIV reads, What are you discussing together as you walk along? A. In this way Jesus entered the conversation. III. The men stood still, looking sad, their faces downcast. Luke 24:18, And then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? I. Cleopas asked Jesus, Are you the only one in Jerusalem that does not know what has just happened there? A. It seemed incredible to these two men that anyone could be in the environs of Jerusalem without knowing what had happened. B. Of course, Jesus knew all about what had happened. That is for sure! C. Acts 26:26, For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner. Luke 24:19, 20, And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet
6 mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. I. Jesus asked, What things? II. The two men, Cleopas and his friend, replied, A. The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people; and... B. how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him. C. The two disciples led into the subject as Jesus had intended. Luke 24:21, But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, today is the third day since these things were done. I. They further said, We had hoped it was he who should redeem Israel. A. The past perfect tense had hoped indicated they had given up all hope that Jesus could, would now redeem Israel. B. How could a dead prophet redeem Israel? II. Besides all this, it is now the third day since these things came to pass. Luke 24:22-24, Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulcher; And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive. And certain of them
7 which were with us went to the sepulcher, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not. I. In addition to all this, certain women from among the followers of Jesus had been to the tomb early that first day of the week and found that Jesus body was not there. II. They reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said Jesus was alive. III. Certain others who were among the disciples went to the tomb and found things as the women had said. IV. The disciples did not find Jesus. Note: By the time Jesus appeared to Cleopas and his friend, the resurrected Christ had appeared only to Mary Magdalene. Luke 24:25, Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken: I. Jesus said to Cleopas and his friend, A. O foolish men They had failed to accept the plain teachings of the Old Testament. 2. In this way they had acted foolishly. B. O slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken. 1. Many people today are slow to believe anything the prophets have said.
8 2. Jesus plainly teaches here we are not to hesitate to believe all the Old Testament prophets have said. Luke 24:26, Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? I. Jesus asked, Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory? (NIV) A. The road to glory for Jesus and for us is by the cross: the way of the cross leads home! B. John 13:31, Therefore, when he was gone out, Jesus said, Now is the Son of man glorified, and God is glorified in him. C. Hebrews 5:8, 9, Though he were a Son, yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered; And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; D. Isaiah 53:5, But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. Luke 24:27, And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. I. Jesus began from Moses and all the prophets and interpreted to these two men in all (hyperbole) the scriptures what they had to say regarding Christ, himself. A. There are over 300 prophesies in the Old Testament relating to the Christ, Messiah.
9 B. In a walk of six or seven miles more than enough of these could have been covered to more than make his point. Luke 24:28, 29, And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. But they constrained him, saying, abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. I. When they approached, drew near to Emmaus, the village to which they were going, Jesus acted as if he were going further on down the road. A. Jesus never went where he was not welcome. B. Jesus would have kept going if they had not invited him to stay with them. C. Mark 6:48, And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. D. The Lord s presence and blessings must be asked for. II. The two men strongly urged him to stay with them because it was nearly evening, the first Lord s Day was almost over. A. These disciples were truly hospitable. III. Jesus went into the house as if he were going to stay the night with them. Luke 24:30, 31, And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave to them. And their
10 eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight. I. When Jesus sat down with Cleopas and his friend to eat dinner, II. Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it and gave it to Cleopas and his friend. A. Jesus was made known to them in the breaking of bread. B. In regard to the saved, Jesus still makes himself known in the breaking of the bread of the Lord s Supper. III. Cleopas and his friend s eyes were opened enabling them to recognize Jesus. A. Evidently Jesus willed their recognition of him at that point. Luke 24:32, And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures? I. The two men said to one another, no doubt, in amazement: A. Was not our heart burning within us, while he spake to us in the way, while he opened unto us the scriptures? B. Our job is to speak the scriptures. If we do this the hearts of the people will burn within them! Mark 16:13, And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them. I. This refers to Luke 24:33-35, And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them
11 that were with them, Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon. And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.
