UNIT 3: EXPLORERS, MOUNTAIN MEN, & PIONEERS Chapters 4, 5, 6

The Spanish Come to Utah After the explorations of Christopher Columbus, the Spanish sent other explorers to claim land in North and South America Juan Rivera entered Utah looking for the Colorado River and silver in about 1765 Father Dominguez and Escalante entered the Great Basin in 1776 After the Spanish explorers, fur trappers came, followed by government explorers and later Mormon pioneers.

The Spanish Come to Utah The Spanish set up large colonies in Mexico and later started Catholic missions in California, Arizona, and New Mexico. The Spanish opened mines and used Indian people to work in them often as slaves. The Spanish also introduced horses to native people.

Francisco Dominguez & Silvestre Escalante Francisco Dominguez and Silvestre Escalante were two young Catholic priests sent by the Spanish government to find a better route from Santa Fe to Monterey. The group meet a large Indian camp near Utah Lake

The Old Spanish Trail People needed a way to send goods between Santa Fe and the shipping port in Los Angeles that would avoid the dangerous Indian country of Arizona and the Grand Canyon The Spanish Trail cut a roundabout path through Utah.

Contributions of the First Explorers Established missions and presidios Introduced Indians to Christianity Developed mostly positive relations with the Indians Introduced European ways of life and learned from the Indians where and how to get food Created maps of the area and served as guides

Mountain Men In the early 1800s, mountain men came into Utah. They were employees of American, British, and Mexican fur companies.

Mountain Men The company traders took the pelts to St. Louis to sell, most eventually ended up in Europe About 3000 men, along with some women and children went west to trap. They often dressed like Indians wearing shirts and trousers made of leather. A possible sack included a mold to make bullets, a knife, flint, a tin cup, and other useful items.

Rendezvous Through the fall, winter, and spring, the trappers tended to their traps When they had too many furs to carry with them, they would dig a hole and bury their furs in the ground to store and hide them. This was called a cache. In the summer time trappers came out of the wilderness and brought their furs to sell at a large gathering usually managed by fur trading companies called rendezvous.

Rendezvous The rendezvous was a wild event Men usually got a good price for their furs. Beaver pelts often sold for about $10 each, which would be equivalent to about $100 today.

Indian-Trapper Conflict Many times the Indian people were friendly to the trappers, and even served as guides along the rivers and trails. Often, however Indian people did not want the trappers on their land, disturbing their way of life. To drive the trappers off their land, Indians often attacked them and took their horses and fur.

Contributions of the Mountain Men Mapped most of today s Utah which opened up the West to settlers Sometimes caused conflict with the Indians over the use of the land Introduced guns and other metal tools to the Indians Brought horses to some Indian groups

Contributions from Eastern Pioneer Groups They developed trails from the east to the west They developed trails with a more direct route to California and the Pacific Ocean They developed better maps They continued to learn more about the land

Mormon Pioneers Come to Utah In Early 1830s in New York Joseph Smith organized a church called the Church of Christ now named the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

Mormon Pioneers Come to Utah Smith wanted the followers of his church to join together in a gathering place or Zion Because of their religious, political, and economic beliefs, the Mormons were feared and persecuted

Mormon Pioneers Come to Utah Because of persecution, they moved their gathering place from New York to Ohio to Missouri to Illinois. Forced to move again, they traveled across the great plains and through the Rocky Mountains to the Valley of the Great Salt Lake

Mormon Pioneers Come to Utah Their trail along the northern side of the Platte River came to be known as the Mormon Trail. The Oregon Trail ran along the southern side of the same river.

Mormon Battalion In 1846 The United States went to war with Mexico. The Mormons sent a group of soldiers to help fight in the war The soldier s pay helped buy needed supplies for their trip west.

Brigham Young Led the Mormons after Joseph Smith was killed. Referred to as the Great Colonizer

Early Spring of 1847 Brigham Young led a company from Winter Quarters The group prepared the way for thousands of other pioneers that would soon follow.

Official Diary Thomas Bullock s diary was the official record of the advance pioneer company Some things he listed 1 cannon, a boat, 71 wagons, 93 horses, 66 oxen, 52 mules, 19 cows, 17 dogs

Crossing Rivers It could take as many as two days to get all the wagons and animals across a river They made log rafts to get their wagons over rivers

Buffalo Fresh meat was always a welcome change from the bacon, bread and beans pioneers ate on the trail Some people traveling on the Oregon Trail killed the buffalo for sport, but Brigham Young did not allow the Mormons to do that.

The Rocky Mountains The pioneers crossed the Sweetwater River and then began to travel through the Rocky Mountains The final 116 miles after Fort Bridger were the most difficult.

Into the Valley Orson Pratt and Erastus Snow, who had been sent ahead as scouts, emerged from the mouth of a narrow canyon on July 22, 1847, becoming the first Latter-day Saints to set foot in their new home.

Traveling By Sea In New York, Samuel Brannan advertised for passengers for a five month sea voyage to San Francisco Bay

A Day on the Trail Each morning pioneers gathered firewood or buffalo chips Breakfast was usually soda biscuits or cornmeal johnnycakes The pioneers rarely drank plain water since it was usually muddy or polluted.

A Day on the Trail The wagons were pulled by oxen, mules or horses and had few passengers The people that could walk did so. Children played games such as marbles, checkers, and tag.

Trouble on the Trail The heat, cold, dust, bad water, unusual food, accidents, insects, snake bites, and poor sanitation sometimes caused health problems. The Pioneers usually stayed away from Indian villages, but offered gifts if they did meet each other. Sometimes horses were stolen or the Indians would burn the prairie grass.

Contributions of Mormon Pioneers Wrote hundreds of diary accounts that described life on a pioneer trail Brought thousands of Mormon pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley
