ZÜxxà Çzá YÜÉÅ cüxá w Çz U á{éñ XwãtÜw få à{ I greet you in the precious name of our Lord Jesus Christ, of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named. On behalf of the ministerial body and the national officers, welcome to Columbia, South Carolina where we are convening our 62nd Annual Holy Convocation. I am grateful that it is another year that the Lord has kept us. Our theme for this year, Bridging the Gap for the Next Generation, embodies the burden that the Lord has placed upon my heart for our church at this important time in our history. Sixty-two years ago, the late Bishop J. D. Williams founded the Progressive Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Though he has been gone for more than 40 years, the uncompromised Word of God continues to be preached by men who captured his vision of putting true holiness in the forefront. As a product of his ministry, I am proud to stand on his shoulders as I lead God s people during times when there is little evidence of a moral and spiritual compass in the world. The has maintained its standards and Biblical foundation because of those men and women who were committed to doing things God s way. In the early history of this church, our founder taught us about the importance of preaching the gospel message, the importance of repentance, the importance of water baptism, the importance of the Holy Ghost, and the importance of continuing steadfastly in the Apostles doctrine. We were also taught about the importance of unity in the church. Today, we live in a world where people no longer wish to live their lives by the standards and the principles of God s Word. Many churches have abandoned the fundamental principles of God s Word to build large memberships that lack spirituality. I often view our church as having three distinct generations: the older generation, the middle generation, and the younger generation. The older generation, of which I am a part, has largely been the backbone that has worked hard to build and to strengthen the Progressive Church. As time progresses, many of the older generation are falling asleep in the Lord. The middle generation is comprised of the young adults in our church. This generation is charged with carrying the torch and sustaining that for which the older generation has worked so hard. The younger generation is largely made up of those under the age of 18, who know little about our history and who have a limited understanding of why we stand so firm on the Word of God. There is an obvious spiritual gap between those in my generation and our youth. The generation of our youth faces challenges today that are of an enormous magnitude. Satan has determined that he can destroy the future of the church if he can win the souls and minds of our youth. It is my prayer that the middle generation will capture the vision and become actively involved in saving the generation of our youth from the snares of Satan and sin. The middle generation must carry the torch and bridge the gap for the next generation.

Some may ask, what is it that we wish for the next generation to perpetuate? The answer is quite simple the foundational principles of the Word of God and God s plan of salvation. During this week we will focus our attention on the foundational principles upon which our doctrines is based. The preaching of the gospel is the foundation of all that we do. The Apostle Paul declared in Romans 1:16, I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth. The gospel of our salvation, as described by Paul in I Corinthians 15:1 11, is the message of God s redemptive plan for our salvation. It is the message of the life, death, burial and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. Even today, the gospel still has power to save souls. It also reminds us of the glorious future that awaits the children of God. As it was in the time of Paul, there are some today who teach erroneous doctrines which state that there is no resurrection of the dead, no rapture of the church, and no eternal judgment. Despite these philosophical teachings of men, the Progressive Church must continue to believe and proclaim the gospel message. For without it, mankind cannot be saved. Understanding and believing the Gospel message should produce genuine repentance in the hearts of sinners. Repentance can best be described as the point when a person comes to himself, as did the prodigal son in Luke 15:17. When a sinner genuinely understands the extent to which Christ suffered and died for our redemption, his heart, mind, and attitude should readily turn away from Satan and sin, and embrace God and righteousness. Repentance is a change of attitude and direction. Even those of us who are saved sometimes fall victim to our sinful nature, and have need to repent. When a man of God preaches the gospel message to provoke thought and to bring conviction, the stage is set for God to grant repentance to those who hear and believe (II Timothy 2:25). Without genuine repentance, mankind cannot be saved. After a man believes the gospel message and repents of his sins, he must take on Christ by water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ. Water baptism is not an optional public and ritualistic display. It is a spiritual burial of the old man and a resurrection of a new creation in Christ Jesus (I Peter 3:21). On the day of Pentecost, after the gospel message was preached, the people asked the Apostle Peter, what shall we do? Peter s response is indicative of what every true minister of the gospel should tell those who seek salvation, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. Peter s words on the day of Pentecost are the fulfillment of the words of Jesus in Matthew 28:19; for the name of the Father is Jesus (John 5:43), the name of the son is Jesus (Matthew 1:21), and the name of the Holy Ghost is Jesus (John 14:26). God s Word clearly indicates that water baptism in the name of Jesus Christ is essential to our salvation. God has promised the gift of the Holy Ghost to all believers, evidenced by speaking in other tongues. It is God s seal of approval and acceptance of us as His children (Ephesians 1:13 14; Romans 8:9). The Holy Ghost has also come to give us power (Acts 1:8). As children of God, we are engaged in the age-old battle between good and evil. Satan has targeted all believers who identify themselves with Jesus Christ. Knowing that we cannot fight Satan on our own, God has given us the indwelling power of the Holy Ghost to fight Satan and our sinful nature. The Holy Ghost also enables us to resist the temptation to sin. Galatians 5:16 tell us, This I say then, walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. What a wonderful feeling it is to have God living in you! When the battle is raging, it is the Holy Ghost that gives us the strength and the courage to remain in this spiritual fight. After believing the gospel message, repenting of their sins, being baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost speaking in other tongues, the early saints, continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine (Acts 2:42). The apostles doctrine is our roadmap for holy living. It embodies the principles by which we live our lives to fulfill God s divine purpose. It is important to believe the teachings of the apostles because Jesus prayed in John 17:20, neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word. However, many people have no desire

to adhere to the apostles doctrine. The words recorded in Isaiah 30:9 11 seem to fit today s generation, this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the LORD: Which say to the seers, see not; and to the prophets, prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits: Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us. The New Testament parallel to that scripture is found in II Timothy 4:2-4, Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables. In a time when many churches have bowed to the pressures of society and lowered the standards of holiness, the Progressive Church is continuing to earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints (Jude 3). Finally, Acts 2:42,44 states that the early saints continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship... and all that believed were together, and had all things common. A spirit of unity and fellowship was widespread throughout the early church. The people of God understood the importance of unity. The Apostle Paul wrote in I Corinthians 1:10, Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you; but that ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. Satan has used the ageold tactic of divide and conquer in his fight against the church. Sadly, on many occasions, he has succeeded in robbing the church of the strength and the power that is derived through unity. The apostles and the first saints recognized that they needed each other. When we fully realize that we must work together to fulfill God s purpose, we will be an unstoppable force in the world (I Corinthians 12:12-26). God told the children of Israel in Deuteronomy 6:6-7, And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart: And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. I have a burden on my heart that we leave a solid and firm spiritual heritage with our children today and with generations to come. I expect great things as we come together during this week. I trust that you will be blessed by the fellowship of the saints, and by the daily workshops and worship services that have been planned for God s glory and for your edification. The workshops and the ministry of the Word of God will address important areas, which are foundational principles of our doctrine. It is my prayer that God will send the anointing that makes preaching effective, and that the Word of God will find good and honest hearts in those who hear it. You should leave this convocation realizing the role you must personally play to bridge the gap for the next generation. As Paul wrote in Galatians 6:11, Ye see how large a letter I have written unto you. However, as Jude wrote in Jude 1:3, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. I leave you with the words of Paul in Romans 13:11-14, And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light. Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof.

I love to tell the story because I know tis true. It satisfies my longings as nothing else can do. Chorus: I love to tell the story. Twill be my theme in glory, to tell the old, old story of Jesus and His Love. Verse 2: I love to tell the story, for those who know it best seem hungering and thirsting to hear it like the rest. And when in scenes of glory, I ll sing the new, new song. Twill be the old, old story that I have loved so long. Only Believe Only believe, only believe, all things are possible if you only believe. Only believe, only believe, all things are possible if you only believe. NATIONAL BROTHERHOOD DEPARTMENT SONGS: The Fight Is On Verse: The fight is on, the trumpet sound is ringing out. The cry to arms! is heard afar and near. The Lord of hosts is marching on to victory. The triumph of the Christ will soon appear. Chorus: The fight is on, O Christian soldiers and face to face in stern array. With armor gleaming and colors streaming the right and wrong engage today. The fight is on, but be not weary. Be strong and in His might hold fast. If God be for us, His banner o er us, we ll sing the victor s song at last. Tis the Blessed Hour of Prayer Tis the blessed hour of prayer, when our hearts lowly bend, and we gather to Jesus, our Savior and Friend; If we come to Him in faith, His protection to share. What a balm for the weary, O how sweet to be there! Blessed hour of prayer, blessed hour of prayer. What a balm for the weary, O how sweet to be there. NATIONAL WOMEN S DEPARTMENT SONGS: Kneel At the Cross Verse 1: Kneel at the cross, Christ will meet you there, come while He waits for you. List to His voice, leave with Him your care, and begin life anew. Chorus: Kneel at the cross, kneel at the cross. Leave every care, leave every care. Kneel at the cross, kneel at the cross. Jesus will meet you there. Verse 2: Kneel at the cross, there is room for all, who would His glory share? Bliss there awaits, harm can ne er befall those who are anchored there. I Must Tell Jesus I must tell Jesus all of my trials. I cannot bear these burdens alone. In my distress, He kindly will help me. He ever loves and cares for His own. I must tell Jesus, I must tell Jesus. I cannot bear these burdens alone. I must tell Jesus, I must tell Jesus. Jesus can help me, Jesus alone.

bäxüä xã Éy Wt Äç jéü~á{éñá TUESDAY, JULY 4TH WORKSHOP TOPICS God s Word on Today s Issues The Bible - Truth or Fiction? : Modern culture increasingly question s the validity of the Bible. Books like the DaVinci Code and other literary writings paint a very different picture than the historical account found in the Gospels. Some writings reduce Jesus to a mere man, who did not perform the supernatural miracles recorded in the Bible. Whose report will you believe? As the people of God, we must have faith in the infallibility of the Word of God. This workshop will address important areas where today s culture seeks to destroy the truth of God s Word. Presenter: Elder Thomas J. Smith Columbia, SC Successful and Saved (workshop repeated on Thursday): Some people believe that one can be successful or saved, but rarely both. Satan has used modern culture, sports figures, the entertainment industry, and even the guise of career advancement to glorify lifestyles which do not honor God. This age-old trick has lured many away from God and the fellowship of the church, as they seek success and prosperity. However, God will bless those who will remain faithful to Him. Come hear how you can have the best of both worlds. Presenter: Elder Timothy Beard Mobile, AL Parents Bridging the Gap for Their Children (workshop repeated on Thursday): A child s spiritual instruction begins in the home. Parents are the guardians of their children s lives. Parents instill values, teach by precept and example, and help to establish the path for their children s lives. As the people of God, we must take an active role in helping to save our children. This involves dedicating time, love, open communication, discipline, and setting goals and standards. The future of the church depends upon our children remaining faithful to the principles of God s Word. This workshop will focus on practical areas where parents can bridge the gap for their children. Presenter: Pastor Jimmie C. Deas Florence, SC WEDNESDAY, JULY 5TH WORKSHOP TOPICS God s Word on Today s Issues Marriage, Divorce and Remarriage : In today s society, marriage is no longer viewed as the sacred union God established. Divorce rates are at an all-time high. Many saved young adults see no benefit in marrying other believers and leave the fellowship of the church to marry persons who do not espouse the same religious beliefs. The law of the land allows for a man or woman to divorce his or her spouse and legally remarry. However, what does God s Word say about marriage, divorce and remarriage? In a time when there are so many different doctrines and beliefs about this subject, it is important that the Apostolic Church remain faithful to what the Bible says about marriage, divorce and remarriage. Presenter: Pastor Lang Priester Charlotte, NC What is the Apostolic Doctrine? (workshop repeated on Friday) : What makes the Apostolic Church different from a Baptist Church, Methodist Church, Catholic Church, and many other denominations in the world today? What does the Apostolic Church believe and teach as the tenants of the Faith? Is the Apostolic Church just another Christian denomination? This workshop will focus on what distinguishes the true Apostolic Church from the many other churches in the world. You will leave with a better understanding of who you are and with a sense of pride that you are part of a church that is striving to remain true to God s Word. Presenter: Presiding Bishop Edward Smith Why Have Standards? (workshop repeated on Friday): Every organization in the world has standards. The church is no different. Standards are designed to protect the integrity of an organization and to distinguish it from others. The Apostolic Church is often shunned and criticized for refusing to lower its standards to accommodate the sinful lifestyles of today s society. Despite this fact, the church represents Jesus Christ in the world and it must maintain its holy standards. This workshop will help you to better understand why the Progressive Church holds so firmly to its standards. Presenter: Pastor Paul C. Johnson Hinesville, GA

THURSDAY, JULY 6TH WORKSHOP TOPICS God s Word on Today s Issues Women in the Ministry : Some people ask, why shouldn t a woman be a preacher or minister of the gospel? Many churches in today s society have ordained women to be elders and bishops. Is this a Biblical role women are called to fulfill in the church? We must consider what the Word of God teaches on this important topic. Come and learn about the role women are called to fulfill in the church. You will leave with a better understanding of what the Bible says on this often controversial topic, and how the Apostolic Church should respond to modern day trends related to women in the ministry. Presenter: Elder Thomas J. Smith Columbia, SC Successful and Saved: Some people believe that one can be successful or saved, but rarely both. Presenter: Elder Timothy Beard Mobile, AL Parents Bridging the Gap for Their Children: A child s spiritual instruction begins in the home. Deas Florence, SC FRIDAY, JULY 7TH WORKSHOP TOPICS God s Word on Today s Issues Homosexuality and Same-Sex Marriage : Today, homosexuality and same-sex marriage are issues that churches throughout the world are facing. Some churches have changed their doctrinal beliefs and tenants to allow professed homosexuals to be active members of the church. Some churches have even allowed homosexuals to be ordained into the ministry. How should the Apostolic Church respond to homosexuality? Has the Word of God changed to accommodate this lifestyle? This will be an important workshop, which will focus on what the Bible says about homosexuality and same-sex marriage. The workshop will also address how the Apostolic Church should respond to these age-old issues. Presenter: Pastor Earnest Deas Atlanta, GA What is the Apostolic Doctrine?: What makes the Apostolic Church different from a Baptist Church, Methodist Church, Catholic Church, and many other denominations in the world today? What does the Apostolic Church believe and teach as the tenants of the Faith? Is the Apostolic Church just another Christian denomination? This workshop will focus on what distinguishes the true Apostolic Church from the many other churches in the world. You will leave with a better understanding of who you are and with a sense of pride that you are part of a church that is striving to remain true to God s Word. Presenter: Presiding Bishop Edward Smith Why Have Standards?: Every organization in the world has standards. Johnson Hinesville, GA Gang Awareness: Gangs are a growing problem in cities and communities throughout the United States. Once thought to be problems only experienced in large urban areas, gangs are now active in small towns and suburban areas. Every day, children throughout the country die in gang-related violence. How would you know if your child was involved in a gang? What signs should you look for? This important workshop will share important information on the growing problem of gangs. Come learn how you can help to protect our children. Presenter: Richland County Sheriff's Department
